3/18/26 Visit: El Guacamole is a great little Mexican restaurant. It's located in a strip mall on 4290 Albany Post Rd. New Hyde Pk. between the Vanderbilt Estate and FDR Home. A great place to stop in for lunch after a day of sightseeing. Of course, I checked Yelp for reviews. Yelper Jose P. enjoyed it, so I thought this place would be a winner. Thanks Jose! We ordered 3 Shrimp Tacos, Mandarin Jarritos and a Diet Coke. The drinks along with delicious complimentary chips & sauces were brought out immediately to the table. The tacos came out a short time later. The shrimp tacos were absolutely delicious. All the flavors complemented each another perfectly. Customer service was very efficient and friendly. Place is colorfully decorated. El Guacamole is a little restaurant with a lot of WOW!!!! Definitely would return! Parking is available on the street or in the back lot. read more

Fresh and delicious food! I had the rice bowl with guac instead of meat, and fresh jalapeños. Brian had the 3 tacos, he was happy too. Food tastes and looks like it's made with love and pride. Service was great too. Only complaint is no beer, wine or margaritas. read more

This is our second time visiting El Guacamole and we enjoyed it just as much. Our server, Ney, was amazing and kept checking on us at the perfect intervals. My Raspberry Margarita was well crafted and had the right amount of strength. Each and every item that we ordered was made to perfection, had the right amount of seasoning, and came in large portions. The dipping sauce, for the sweet plantains, was exquisite. The portions were so large, that we required a few to-go boxes. I cannot recommend El Guacamole enough. I was in the mood to try something new. I've placed a couple of orders and the tacos are delicious. Unfortunately, on more than one occasion I've asked for no onions and received plenty of them throughout everything. Kind of annoying being that I really don't like onions. But still, the food is good, I must say. This time around I ordered the empanadas. The plates come with 3 empanadas topped with beans, lettuce and other classic ingredients. It also comes with a side of rice. The beef empanadas have really good flavor and really are huge. I couldn't even finish my food. The only thing I was disappointed in was the lack of crispness on the empanadas. I think of a crispier experience when I bite into an empanada. This wasn't the case and I'm thinking it may have been the black beans spread all over them. Another thing I found weird was that one empanada had cheese and a pepper inside and the others didn't? Was that a mistake? No idea. It tasted good though. Anyways, so far I've only ever ordered take out. I may dine in one of these days. read more

The food is absolutely delicious and the Colombian girl was super nice and polite, great service.We had the fajita bowl, pastor tacos, and the house tortilla soup which were so great but the star of the night was the tres leches cake with their blueberry sauce. It was so delicious. Make sure you order the house spicy salsa instead of the bottled hot sauce, don't be afraid of a little extra heat . I went here for lunch with my boyfriend and his parents. This establishment had a funny smell to it - reminded me of an old hotel smell. For that reason we opted to sit outside. Their patio is shaded and just lovely with flowers, herbs, and pepper plants all around. We ordered the fajitas and birria tacos. Everything was just okay. The chips and salsa were nothing special either - the chips and dips both needed salt added for more flavor. Maybe we just didn't order the right things? I needed something different after days of eating mostly New England fare, and we were surprised to find Mexican food in the Hudson Valley. Coming from California, we are used to great Mexican food, and I was happy to find a restaurant with good food! The service was friendly and helpful. We ordered takeout. Had a very fun and tasty time here with a group of friends! One of the friends I went with is International from Mexico city and she recommended El Guacamole, specifically for the birria tacos. I am crazy for good birria, and finding a place in upstate NY can be challenging. I highly recommend getting the tacos here they were delicious and came with a very tasty consommé and side of rice. For dessert we ordered the curios and those were a great way to end a good night. Drinks we got Jarritos and flavored waters (passion fruit and pineapple). Can't wait to go back :) read more

The decor is typical tex-mex restaurant and appropriate. The service was an issue as there was only one staff member working for early lunch--I don't know when more staff would arrive. Other reviewers have panned the salsa and I concur. My wet burrito entre was ok but not great. There are better Mexican restaurants within a 15 mile radius. read more

Place was decorated very lovely. The Pina Colada was delicious, served in a fresh pineapple with tons of whipped cream, but I did not taste any rum. The steak platter came out sizzling and smoking, unfortunately the steak was far too overcooked. When I asked for butter for the corn I was told they didn't have any??? Huh??? After the food was delivered the waiter never came back to check on us. Not even to see if we wanted another drink. Never saw him again until he brought us our bill. Everything was tasty even the very overcooked (almost burnt) steak. My dining companion had a Wet Burrito that he said was very good. Doubtful we will try this place a second time, as the food was expensive and the service was so so at best. read more

There's so many things I like about El Guacamole. So, so, so many things. Here are eight, for the sake of brevity. 1. The guacamole (how can you not order it when the name of the place is El Guacamole) is served in a mortar and pestle shaped and painted like a donkey. At least I think it's a donkey. Tough to tell, because it looks way more like a mortar and pestle. You look at the photo and tell me. And the guac tastes good, which is generally important too. 2. The giant, tasty quesadilla filled with al pastor. 3. The entire joint is decorated with amazing art, including what looks like a jacked man on top of an Aztec monument holding an attacking dragon by the throat with one hand, about to club it with another. I think I'm going to make it my first tattoo. Probably on my face. 4. The shrimp tacos. 5. The pineapple water. If you don't know what this is...well, I didn't either. But it's a frothy, creamy pineapple drink that is refreshing, and not too sweet. They have mango water too, but pineapple beats mango every day of the week. 6. The Carne Asada Con Camarones, which is exactly what it sounds like: A huge platter of steak and shrimp and onions and peppers, served with an equally huge platter of rice, beans, guacamole and salad. This is not a meal for just one person. 7. The fish tacos. 8. The people. Man, the people here. They are the sweetest. It's clearly a family place, and they don't just put love and care into the food, but into everything. They accidentally dropped some pottery behind us during our meal, and felt so bad that it might've disturbed us that they gave us some flan on the house. And then when they found out we lived in NYC, they recommended a great Colombian food spot. How nice is that? read more

My first visit to El Guacamole was for take-out lunch, but it was enough to make me want to come back for future sit-down meals. The decor is festive without being excessive, and the restaurant is very quaint and clean and comfortable. The staff here are very friendly, and I was checked on several times even while simply waiting for take-out. I liked that I had a choice of wet or dry for my burrito, and I chose dry for take-out (and I'd choose wet for eat-in). The burrito was HUGE and very filling, but that's also because it did include a good amount of rice. It was accompanied by large containers of sour cream and a green sauce, and a serving of what felt like a pico de gallo salad - I would have enjoyed that actually being in the burrito to enhance the flavor of the chicken and rice. I also liked that they have my favorite brand of soda, Jarrito. There's a nice variety to their menu, and I'll definitely be back to try more. read more

Food is probably the best Mexican in the area- at least I haven't had better! I always go for the shrimp tacos. Do yourself a favor and try one of their huge flavored "waters" which are like fresh made juices. Service here IS VERY FRIENDLY AND VERY FAMILY ORIENTED. Went with some friends for Dinner. I've been to Mexican restaurants here and Mexico. So I know Mexican food. There are the de rigor entrees; in most Mexican restaurants in the U.S., enchiladas, synchonizadas, and something in molè, surprisingly there were sopes, and red snapper Veracruz style. The steak tampequena meal was enough for two people and was delicious. The sauce on the red snapper had a little too much cilantro for me but, otherwise very good. The portions are huge and the prices very reasonable. There is outdoor seating available. They don't have a liquor license yet. read more

This place's customer service is THE WORST I've ever dealt with. On TWO separate occasions my family ordered food from this place and it's been wrong every time. The first time they completely forgot my son's entire meal as well as my wife's soup and they were bothered that they had to come bring it to the house. The second time they forgot the cheese and tortillas for one meal and had absolutely zero intention in fixing it saying that they would just bring the missing cheese and tortillas to the house and refused to refund or replace the meal that would be ice cold and disgusting by the time it got there. The "manager" Victoria tried to make us feel bad they they would have to "charge the server for the meal" which is absolutely ridiculous and classless. She is rude and does not care about customers and would rather lose patronage than replace a $15.00 order. Avoid this place like the plague. I would suggest cafe maya as I've always had a good experience with them or any other Mexican restaurant in Dutchess county for that matter. read more

We were in Hyde Park visiting our daughter and this was really close to our hotel so we gave it a try. It was really good! I had the Birria tacos and they were delicious. My husband had the fajitas and ate the whole thing. My margarita was big and had lots of tequila. Service was also very good. If in the area again we would definitely come again. read more

My fiancé and I stopped here on our way back home from the Catskills back to NYC. One of my favorite restaurants in Hyde Park. Service was quick for sit-down diners. We received free tortilla chips and salsa for appetizers. I ordered the tacos al pastor and tried the carnitas tacos a week later. I highly recommend both! My boyfriend ordered beef empanadas which were also delicious. Portions are large and well-worth the price. We also ordered for work lunch. Only con is take-out line can have a lengthy wait time. We'll definitely be back soon! read more

I stopped in for lunch on the way through town on a weekday afternoon. Nice waitress. Pretty good food. I had fish tacos of tilapia (farmed fish). They were better than Mexican Radio in that the fish was grilled, not fried. Everything tasted fresh, if not off the charts -- hence 4, not 5 stars. Would I go back? Yes. Would I hurry back? No, it's not that great of a food experience. I like that they serve chips, salsa and cream salsa verde comp when you sit down. And they sure are hospitable. Next time I will do as waitress encouraged and order the Al Pastor tacos. I had churros for dessert which I enjoyed more than I thought I would when I first tasted and found them disappointingly crisp on outside. But they were delicious, served with condensed milk for dipping and a dab of whipped cream with jelly. And that *%@* Nescafe instant coffee! Baffles me, but authentic, oddly. A good meal, not a great meal. But they are fair and reasonably priced with better than average food in freshness and flavor. read more

Overrated disappointment that was OK at best. This place has dealt a serious blow to my trust in Yelp reviews. Either something has changed drastically with their quality recently or the standard is being set surprisingly low. Ordered the carnitas quesadilla, chorizo nachos, and a fish taco. The carnitas were dry and completely bland. Sure they gave a generous amount of it but its hard to feel happy about the quantity when is isn't that enjoyable. The nachos were ok simply because the chorizo wasn't dry and the toppings seemed fresh. But the guacamole was watery, and the chips were very soggy. A little bit soggy is expected due to the nature of delivery, but about half the chips were so soggy that I would believe you if you told me they were boiled in a pot of water. Other Mexican restaurants like Cemitas el Tigre use containers that can let steam through to at least mitigate this problem. The fish taco had decent flavor, but the batter was soggy and the fish was dry. Cemitas el tigre makes a much better fish taco in every way. Overall, meh. read more

HUGE PORTIONS! Oh my, once you leave New York City, the prices drop and the portions increase. Honestly, I didn't finish my tacos due to a combination of lack of appetite from waiting too long for our food and the large portions. The tacos were good though, don't get me wrong! We visited around 9 PM on a Friday night on our way up to Rensselaerville from NYC. The restaurant was completely empty, because they were close to closing, but they also had a few people drop in for takeout. Service was quite slow that night, despite us being the only table. I think it took almost half an hour to get our food, and in the meantime, I gorged myself on the complimentary chips and salsa (noob mistake). Anyways, it's a nice pit stop along the way, as long as you're wary of time! read more

WOW...WOW...WOW....who knew. Pretty much located on the strip and looking like a regular eatery, the food is simply the freshest I've ever eaten. And the most authentic. Even my wife who is an amazing cook in her own right, was blown away with the quality and consistency. From the chips to the guacamole to the generous sized entrees you won't be disappointed in this place. Truly an amazing experience with amazing prices to match. And the tres leches cake? In the menu, the guacamole's price is crossed out and my bf thought it wasn't available. It turns out that the guacamole is available but the price varies by the day. The day we went the price was $10. The guacamole was delicious and enough for two people. They bring out chips and salsa for the table. The salsa taste good is not spicy. Once you order your food they bring out 4 sauces I liked the green sauce the best. I ordered the chicken fajitas and the portions were huge. Between the chips and salsa, guacamole and the fajitas, I was full. I ended up taking half of the fajitas home. I also order a passion fruit water. It was so delicious and huge. I didn't finish mine, the waitress was so nice and gave it to me in a to-go cup. My bf ordered the fish tacos and he loved them, it was a good portion and the fish was very fresh. We order the flan for dessert. It was good. I'm not sure if is made at the restaurant. The only thing that I think they can improve on is spoons. Yes, I know it sounds silly but they use plastic spoons. They use regular flatware for everything else but spoons. I think purchasing better spoons would give the place a bit of a better look.
