Taco Tuesdays! But the only problem is, I didn't order any tacos at El Grullense. Spoiler alert.
Just felt like Mexican cuisine today, so decided to pop down to this shop for some eats.
It's located in a small shopping strip off of Pacheco Blvd, and right before the freeway entrance if you're coming from Contra Costa. Make sure to keep your eye out for it, or you may miss it altogether, but luckily, there's plenty of u-turn opportunities at least up ahead, but just be wary.
The place isn't much to look at from the outside, and not much to look at on the inside either. Pretty clean, but it is a bit older of a building, and gives off that feel at times of dinginess. It's a fairly larger restaurant, with an ample amount of seating, and a larger table as well for a big group. In general, it's more of a drop in get out, or takeout type place.
It appears their entire menu has been listed above their counter, and all the menu items have pictures to accompany them. There's so many pictures up there, it feels like the whole menu is probably up there, but I could be wrong. Don't quote me on that. It's all photos of the food they have personally taken, so it's good to know what you see is what you'll get.
Since my eating companion tonight wasn't all that hungry either, we just kept it simple, and ordered a couple of dishes. We ordered a special chicken nachos with everything on it, and also a Tostada de Ceviche. The backstory on the special nachos was fairly simple. While we were deciding what to order, someone else ordered it, and we saw it and were like, "We want that too!", since it looked so delicious. The Ceviche was ordered to help balance out the flavor profiles a bit.
The special chickens nachos were well done, and tasted good. The beans were well made, and doesn't have that greasy aftertaste most places have. The multiple sauces on top all worked well together. Lots of different flavors, but meshed well as a whole. Of course the other typical ingredients of a salsa, combined with the chicken, all in all, it was a tasty nacho, and also a pretty huge plate of it, which my friend and I appreciated. The Ceviche was not the tastiest I've ever had, and the portions were just okay, it was refreshing and light, so basically served its purpose. While the food wasn't spectacular, it was a satisfying meal.
El Grullense is a nice place get some tasty Mexican cuisine. They also had some more traditional dishes on their menu that I'd love to try next, especially the Oxtail stew, which looks delicious among other things. The staff are friendly, and will bring you your food if you eat there. The cost of the food wasn't bad at all, and probably on the cheaper side, especially special nachos which had a huge portion size. It's not a particularly nice restaurant, but if you're looking for a more casual experience anyways, this place will fit your needs, but it's also a fairly older building and interior, so keep all of this in mind. Will be back again in the future. read more
