I am extremely upset with what just occurred after my meal at El Comalito's. My wife and I had went there to eat after I just got off of work. I have eaten there several times. I like the food, and the wait staff is normally fantastic, but today is another story. When my wife and I ordered our food, we prepaid at the register. After finishing our meal my wife and I got up and proceeded to the door. Upon our exiting, one of the wait staff said in Spanish, "They're leaving without paying". How dare you accuse me of not paying for my meal. Theft, especially dining and dashing, is for the weak. It is one of the most lowlife activities I can think of. I took that as a personal insult. And your saying this in Spanish? Do you think I don't understand Spanish? I understand Spanish very well. Here's a wild idea: Why don't you guys get better organized? If you dine in, have your patrons pay after their meal, or if they want to prepay for their food, have a better system in place to confirm they paid and forgo accusing them of stealing from you. my first time eating El Comalito food, i was out visiting friends...we ordered take out of Pupusa, Fish Tacos, Salad and a side order of plantains...oh my!! my first Pupusa experience and it was super tasty!! The Fish tacos were cooked perfectly and the spicy and slightly creamy pink sauce that accompanied the fish tacos was perfect!! The plantains were delicous. Honestly, the best Mexican food I've had in western Mass so far! And as a Texan, I take Mexican food somewhat seriously. I had the fried yuca and spinach enchiladas. So flavorful and delicious! Took forever to make my order, finally gave it to the wrong guy. The guy came back and returned it 10 minutes later saying "I didn't order a pork burrito". The funny thing is that I didn't either, so my order would have been wrong anyway. They got me my burrito after being in there for a half hour, and forgot to make the empanada I asked for. Tried it because they had 4.5 stars and was looking for somewhere new. We ordered the Pupusas (revuleta, jalapeño and cheese, beans and cheese) and chicken enchiladas for take-out. The pupusas was not what I expected at all, especially with all the other recommendations and raves by other yelpers. It was VERY bland, the pork was more of a puree, and the dough was thick. I did not enjoy eating it at all. The chicken enchilada was decent, nothing special. I would not return again. The food was cheap but the quality was not there. read more

Wish i could give this place 6 stars. The food is fabulous. It really truly is. The selection is wonderful and varied and they cook everything extremely well. The bar next door allows you to bring their food into it, but they will also be opening their own bar as soon as they get the liquour license. Aside from knowing that i will always eat delicious perfect food every time. Also know that this restaurant is run by a salvadoran matriarch family. They opened the restaurant about 4 years ago after taking over the infrastructure from a puerto rican brother who just couldn't get the support from the community for latino-caribbean cuisine. These women have been working their asses off and have built the place up slowly with tons of sacrifice. The worst. The "carne asada" was literally leather and tasted like the cheapest cut of steak one could have. The service was lacking AKA nobody even noticed we existed for almost 15 mins. The only redeeming quality about this place is it's slow so you can get right in. Won't be back. read more

Really, really like this place. I have tried all the Mexican food in the Amherst area, and I have found that El Comalito to have the best food. I have been a fan and anytime I am in there area, I always bring home food for dinner, which is at least once per month since they opened. I absolutely love the Shrimp burrito, and the amount of shrimp that is in far exceeds any others that I've had. Between my husband and I we've had the steak, pork, shrimp, chicken burritos- all have been wonderful and the quality of the food consistent. We've also had many of the various enchiladas and I can't leave without an order of fried plantains. The restaurant is basic, with a high counter and stools, and in the summer, picnic tables are available outside. When I get food it's always to bring home. The staff/owners are friendly and service is quick. The last number of times that I've been there, large orders were heading out to local colleges, or staff were coming in to pay for their catered events, and I can understand why- they're food is great! If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. I continue to spread the word to people I know in the area. read more

My wife and I recently dined here for my birthday, and we had a great experience. From some of the other reviews I read, I thought this was just going to be a little take-out dive, but it was very cozy, clean, and well furnished. It is, however, a very small restaurant so there must be times when there's a long wait for a table. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive, and took our meal and drink orders in a timely manner. I ordered a strawberry margarita and chicken enchiladas with Ranchero sauce, and my wife got a pineapple margarita and chicken enchiladas with mole. Our meals came quickly and were very tasty and fresh. The plates are quite large and we both ended up with leftovers to bring home. My only criticism would be that my strawberry margarita was a little overly sweet and didn't have much of a kick. I'm a bit of a lightweight when it comes to alcohol, and I didn't even get a little of that "warm and fuzzy" feeling. It did have a very nice flavor overall, but I would prefer a little less sugar and a little more tequila, especially considering the cost. That's the only reason why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. Wow. Well done. Amazing food, service, and FRESH margaritas.

El Comalito opened tonight, after a much anticipated wait. The food did not disappoint. It is real Mexican and Salvadorian fare, including pupusas (which by the way, were delicious!). The decor is sparse, but there are 8 counter seats if you choose to eat in. We got take out, and had plenty of food. Several of our meals came with a small side salad, and beans, which was nice. Cheap and great lunch special burrito. The Salvadoran food (not pretending to be any sort of a judge, here) has been great. I'm completely sold on pupusas now. I will definitely be coming here again very soon. Had an amazing vegan burrito with flavorful roasted vegetables, rice, beans, and guacamole. The guac was so fresh and I also loved both the red and green salsas. Our waitress was so kind and helpful, the service was quick, and the menu looked delicious. My experience the first time was pretty good, so I came back today for a takeout order. I had a chicken sopas/Mexican sandwich to go. When I got home I discovered a sandwich with old, hard, moldy-looking bread and chicken that was pounded and fried to the consistency of cardboard. I threw the entire sandwich out. I won't go back. If they serve bread I can instantly see has gone bad, I don't want to imagine what spoiled ingredients they try to get away with using inside burritos and such. A shame, I thought I'd found a real gem... but I'm not forgiving spoiled food. read more

We eat here multiple times every month and have since they opened. Their food is incredibly delicious, and the current interior construction represents years of work on the part of the family running this business - congratulations to them on their well-deserved success! Their burritos, tortas, pupusas, plaintains, enchiladas mole, and tacos dorados are our favorite dishes. Love the horchata! Ok, I'll say it. This isn't really a Mexican restaurant. But that's my common complaint about so-called "Mexican" restaurants in New England. It would be better if places like El Comalito come out and say it like it is--they're a Salvadoran restaurant that uses "Mexican" as a marketing strategy. Yeah, the pupusas are good. El Comalito is a real gem. Behind a gas station, in South Amherst lies the best El Salvadorian food in the area. It's hard to go wrong with any of their burritos, but the Chorizo is excellent and so is the Carne Asada. They have plenty of sodas to accompany your dinner, like Jarritos or even Horchata. The fried plantains are the best around. I'm a fiend and since traveling to central america I can't get enough of the sweet maduros. Comalito's fried plantains are the real deal, a dessert and an appetizer at the same time, and they always use truly ripe plantains. I highly recommend El Comalito, especially when looking for a quick dinner. They deliver and are always very nice. read more

I am salvadorean and trust me this is the worst place you can eat pupusas in the state of Mass. Waited too long for it and to add insult to pupusas they don't make plain curtido. The price of pupusas is way too much. Average price anywhere for pupusas is about $2.00 to $2.50 . I am Salvadorean and I know my pupusas. They need a new pupusera the quality is below average a real pupusa doesn't look rough as the 5 pupusas that I ordered. to be honest I will not recommend this place for pupusas or even call it salvadorean restaurant. I am very disappointed because they are making a quick buck by pretending to be what they are not. This place is more for those people that don't really know how pupusas are suppose to taste like and would try anything just because is a different place to go and try new food. Please don't be fooled by their quality . This restaurant should stick to taquitos,burritos,quesadillas and call themselves a Mexican restaurant only. read more

I had heard of El Comalito from a friend, ordered delivery one time and now have eaten there for 4 straight meals. Burritos, puposas's, tacos dorados, tortas, plantains, and the steak sausage combo were all amazing and perfectly spiced. The best thing I had there though was the chicken enchiladas with the green sauce! They were out of this world. Many dishes come with side salad, rice, and beans. This is a must go if you love authentic food! Great prices, great owner and will be eating there at least TWICE A WEEK!! read more

I will definitely be back. We tried the steak/carne asada tacos, chicken mole dinner, and pork, bean and cheese pupusas. All were fantastic. The tacos were generously filled with great tasting steak and had the perfect amount of onion and cilantro. The tacos also came with a salsa verde and lime. That combination was so delicious and reminded me of actual street tacos in Mexico. Definitely some of the best tacos I have had in Western MA in my three years here. The mole was also really delicious. It wasn't too bitter but had various flavors while maintaining the classic earthy/chocolatey taste. The pupusas were fantastic (we actually ordered these to go). So full of flavor along with the ensalada and salsa on top. Also some of the best pupusas I have had in Western MA. I want to try more from the menu! read more

We stumbled across this place while shopping at the nearby Trading Post. A great find! Pupusas were great, as were the plantains and the Pollo Encebollado (with nicely spiced carmelized onions). Generous portions, good prices. Not too greasy. And they deliver! They are going near the top of the list of places we hit up for delivery in the area. The food and service here is great! Had the pupusas and the tacos dorados and both were well priced and portion size were huge! The only downside is that they don't have many indoor seats (I think they are more of a delivery and take out place.) They are a new-ish business so hopefully they will have more seats once they become more established! read more

On this occasion, there were 2 two tops in the restaurant, and yet it took 45 minutes for 2 burrito bowls to be made.
