We are just in Mitchell overnight, traveling from Texas. We probably have 50 Mexican restaurants with 15 miles of our house. But this place had better food than any all of the ones we have been to. Yes, I said they have swings instead of chairs. That alone is a reason to eat here but with good food as well, make the stop. You won't regret it. My husbands Green chili burrito was probably one of the best I've had in a long time The waitress Kiana was very helpful and friendly, the three mango shrimp tacos that she suggested were delicious and flavorful and nice complement of spicy and sweet but not too sweet! Found this restauranton Google, Yelp with good reviews & walking distance. we gave it a try. we had dish taco and its wonderful. its not your traditional Mexican restaurant deco. its very clean & mondern. you can see through the kitchen, how they prepare your food. the chips & salsa they bring to te table as complimentary is great. chips are hot &.fresh. highly recommend this restaurant as your dinner or lunch stop if you are in the area. read more

After reading all these great reviews we had to give this place a try, Unfortunately it did not live up to what we'd read about it. Carne asada and carnitas both tasted like they'd been reheated several times, they were chewy and tasted very old, I was only able to get through maybe 3 bites of my plate before I gave up. Told the waiter when he came to check on us and was told they cook everything fresh for each customer which is hard to believe. Even after having them toss my pretty much full plate they offered no discount or to take the meal off the bill. Left hungry and out the $15 I had to shell out on old food. Will not be back. I was more willing to get a slice of truck stop pizza on the way home than eat another bite off my plate. Only left 2 stars because the chips and salsa were tasty. read more

Excellent food! Excellent staff! Fast as a fast food joint with cuisine 10x better! You have to ask to spice it up beyond typical jalapeno spice. As with most Mexican inspired restaurants the seasoning is mild. Don't get me wrong it is still flavorful. And affordable. Do wish the had a hard liquor license as their parent restaurant Corona Village makes the best margaritas around! Who knew you could find such good Mexican food in Mitchell, South Dakota? This place was great! I am a vegetarian, which adds another layer of difficulty in finding a place to eat on a road trip. Most of the dishes at El Columpio can be made without me, which gave me lots of options. I ended up getting cheese enchiladas, which were delicious. My dining partners also enjoyed their dishes. It's cheap, too - 3 big meals and a sangria came out to just $25, which seemed very reasonable. I'll definitely stop here again the next time I pass through Mitchell. read more

We were road weary from driving for 10 hours from Wisconsin. After a short visit to the Corn Palace, we were hungry. El Columpio showed up as a top pick on Yelp, so that's where we headed. And boy, were we glad. This is a fast food type feeling place, except they have a rooftop deck and outside seating as well as a counter with swings for seats (just like at the beach in parts of Mexico). And the food is great. Not just regular heated up canned beans, it was really good. I had the Chenco Burrito with the carne asada (spiced Mexican beef), lots of grilled veggies and covered in a red sauce made from pasilla peppers (flavorful but not spicy) and topped with corn, sour cream, tomato and cheese. Fantastic. My friends had sopitos, thick masa cake tortilla with raised edges that keep the yummy topping in place - chorizo, lettuce, avocado, tomato, creme fraiche on top- wow. They also have margaritas, but we had to drive another hour so I opted for the horchata. It was good too! This is by far the best Mexican food in South Dakota. This is a slice of heaven from the southwest in the midwest. This is our favorite place to eat in Mitchell. The seasoning is good. Atmosphere is clean and the service is fast and friendly. If you like it a little spicier just ask. They are so friendly and accomodating. The barbacoa is soo good. Brand new Building. We were able to walk to it from Cabelas parking lot. I always go with steak fajitas and these were, hands down, my favorite so far. My husband had the Mexicana Molcajete and it was very good flavor. Servers were very polite and service was quick. We will definitely be back when we pass back through Mitchell. read more

Eaten more than my share of Mexican food and I am Not sure it rises to five stars but probably some of the best Mexican food you can find in the middle of South Dakota. Docked one star as our server missed all of our special requests (i.e. no sour cream, no guac, etc) and seemed to have a bit of an attitude. Portions were generous. Tamales were good and not too dry. Driving through South Dakota last night and found this jewel in Mitchell on Yelp. Excellent food and service for nine of us! Chips and salsa were delish and plentiful. Those in the group had Tacos Barbacoa, enchiladas, Carne Tampico, fajita quesadilla, a chicken dish with vegetables, cream and jalapeños and all were excellent.
