Warm greeting as we entered the restaurant, we were seated immediately and served chips and salsa. Staff was very friendly and accommodating as we had trouble deciding what to eat. Settled on the queso burrito and enchiladas. Order was filled quickly and the food was okay - chips were thick (hard - we prefer light and crispy), salsa had good flavor but was a bit thin), burrito was good (a bit too much rice and glad I opted for no beans or green pepper inside the burrito) and the enchiladas were okay but sprinkled with cheddar cheese vs we were expecting queso. On our way to Sioux City, my sister and I stopped by El Columpio because she wanted to try their birria, which I thought I'd seen on their Yelp review. El Columpio is situated in a free-standing structure that looks as if a previous fast-food establishment might have been there. The dining room simple and clean. We felt welcomed and the staff is very friendly. So we were expecting a place where you walk up to the counter to place your order and get a number to pick-up your order when ready (or some variation of this). We were greeted immediately and invited to sit down. I looked up at the front wall where typically the menu items and prices are listed. This turned out to be only half of what I expected. That is to say, only menu items were listed but there no prices listed, and no birria either! Their tri-fold sleeved menu didn't have birria on it either. All these observations suggest that perhaps El Columpio might have been previously-located elsewhere; and had now semi-modified their service process. So I asked about the birria and the server replied it's not on the usual menu but they have it by request, he checked his computerized menu, and said that we could get three quesa birrias for $19.95 (or just created the menu item). Our three quesa birrias came in a platter with rice and beans and a little bit of shredded iceberg lettuce. When the birria platter arrived I immediately thought it looked really greasy and only ate the interior meat portion. I also that perhaps the meat tasted more like shredded pork rather than the traditional goat meat that is usually in birria. My chef friend informed ne that such substitutions are common but we should been inform of them too. Despite our expections being a bit off, we both thought that $19.95 for this platter was excessive. My sister even said that she would have preferred going to Taco Bell than to El Columpio. read more

Once again Yelp pointed out another great restaurant slightly off the beaten path. El Columpio means the swing and there are swings for seats around the windows. The swings looked like fun, but given my age and the delicious sangria I had, a regular chair was the safest choice. The place was spotless and the service was fast and friendly. And the food was delicious. I'm from Montana so my taste is probably on the mild side. The chili rellano was perfect for me. There were sauces on the table so I am sure you could season any dish to your taste. And you should have the sangria for sure. read more

Dined here again, after many visits on our way through Mitchell, SD, and we are never disappointed! The chips were hot and plentiful and the salsa just the right amount of heat. The containers of salsa are small so if you prefer ask for a little larger bowl. Order the pork Tamale's! They are the BEST we have had - and we have had many across the Southwest and Mexico! What a gem! We were looking for a late lunch while driving a long distance and decided to check out El Columpio. It's a simple place with a drive through. It does have a full bar as well which seems a bit odd, but good. Service was great, table service and our food came out quickly and hot. I had the burrito loco. This little place we found while traveling through Mitchell and staying for a couple of days. Our first night in town, we didn't wanna cook so I looked these guys up and so we ran over there and were not disappointed. The staff here worked their butts off and serve good food really quickly. Their attention to detail and taking care of us was fantastic. They cook behind a plexiglass or glass screen, so it's quite entertaining to watch all the food being prepared. Thirteen hours into our 16 hour drive from Indiana to Rapid City, my boyfriend and I stopped in Mitchell, SD for food and gas. We ended up choosing El Columpio since my boyfriend was craving a torta. The restaurant was very cute and clean, the staff was very friendly and attentive, and the food was great!! After eating one of the best quesadillas I've ever had and an amazing torta, we went to get back on the road when we realized our car battery was dead. Alfredo and Alfredo Jr. were kind enough to not only jump start our car, but when that didn't work, they drove us to AutoZone to buy a new battery. We appreciated their help so much!! :) read more

This is a great little Mexican restaurant in Mitchell, SD! My entree was the shrimp ajillo and it was INCREDIBLE; the perfect balance of flavor and texture and a nice, big portion. If you like shrimp and mushrooms and a little heat, TRY THIS! My husband ordered some tacos (mango shrimp and barbacoa) and my daughter a burrito, and both were very impressed. I would have never guessed that one of the BEST Mexican food restaurants I've ever eaten at would be located in Mitchell, South Dakota, but tonight we stumbled upon El Columpio while driving across I-90 and I'm sure glad we did. We were warmly greeted by our server Julia upon entering the restaurant. Our group of four order a variety of items. My steak fajita tacos were amazing, but the chili relleños and vegatarian tamales were the stars of the show tonight. Julia told us that her father and brother work very hard on the tamales. The verde sauce on the tamale was amazing. The relleños had just the right amount of heat in the poblano and sauce to flavor them to perfection. What a great surprise tonight in Mitchell! My dad and I came here because we saw this place was rated so well here on Yelp. Let me just say the food was AWESOME. I got the Green Chili Burrito and it was delicious and perfectly spiced. My dad got the Carnitas "Jalisco Style" and they made it exactly how he wanted and it was also delicious. We came at an off time so we had immaculate service. Julia and Alfredo were very personable and friendly and happy to help with my dads restrictions. We came when it was quite cold so we couldn't sit on the upstairs patio, but the downstairs area has swings chairs which look like they would be fun to eat on. read more

A great balance for pleasing the masses. 2. Bottle drinks: While they do have soda on fountain (coke products) they have a great selections of Jarritos and Fanta. 3. There is a full menu with lots combinations to satisfy your taste buds. I recommend sharing a larger plate. 4. Service is polite and did a good job keeping our drinks refilled. Mexi-Can in South Dakota- Wifey and I overnighted in Mitchell, South Dakota, while on the return leg of a Wisconsin road-trip. Meeting the grandkids was fun, but we found El Columpio and it was great (for a meal). My carne beefsteak included beef, mushrooms, and onions enveloped in a dark red, spicy sauce that was even better the next day. Wifey had the excellent tacos de barbacoa. I thought I had some great dining experiences on my vacation, but whatever they were, this place made me forget them! The waiter was so helpful and attentive! Then the food ... are you kidding me?! I got the Cueso Burrito with steak, and I tasted heaven! I'm sure it wasn't just the Alfredo Margarita talking, which was excellent as well. One thing I also enjoyed was being able to see the kitchen staff behind the glass wall, working their magic. There was Spanish music playing in the background, which contributed to the pleasant atmosphere. The value of the food was good. My wife and I enjoyed a great meal here on a Monday evening while passing through town. Service was awesome the entire time even though there were signs on the doors indicating they were short staffed and there was only the one open table when we walked in. Located just south of I90, they are close to several hotels including ours. There's quite a few options on the menu but we kept it simple by picking their combination meals. Just pick one or two main items like a burrito or taco and it comes with retried beans and yellow rice. There are numerous types of meat to select for your item(s) including chorizo and barbacoa. I got the mas #1 combo with two tacos filled with the meats I mentioned above. The chorizo was my favorite with a little spice and tons of flavor. The tacos come in soft shells but not the flimsy ones that ultimately rip after a bit making a mess. The refried beans were super delicious and not too thick. The rice also was great. My wife got mas #2 which let her have a burrito with a taco. Her burrito was filled with carne asada but nothing else. No lettuce or tomatoes which was a little disappointing. Her chicken taco was yummy and had all the extras. They sell alcoholic drinks (yay). My wife got a giant margarita while I drank a Modelo Especial. It's a small restaurant with several tables crammed in. Unfortunately due to the acoustics and the tight quarters, it makes for a very loud dining experience. With that said, the food was fabulous! Husband had tamales which were good and I had the tacos de barbacoa which were amazing! Chips and salsa were both very good and my husband is a salsa-snob. Margarita was good and there was a good selection of Mexican beers. Wait staff was friendly and hustled. We stopped in last night as we were staying at the Holiday Inn and this place is located right behind them. We arrived around 6pm and there was plenty of seating and the smells coming from the building was intoxicating. As soon as we were seated the waitress promptly came over and gave us water. She gave us a minute to look over the menu and we ordered the 3 barbacoa taco plate. It came with the 3 tacos, rice and beans and complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and crisp and the salsa was well seasoned. When the tacos arrived they were beautifully displayed and came with a generous helping of beef. The rice and beans were well seasoned and tasty but when I got to the tacos the sauce they were dipped in was very watery. Though the meat was very tender and moist I was looking for more of a punch of flavor. Overall cute place. If you sit at the window you get to sit in a swing which is kinda cool and again good service. They also offer a military discount. read more
