Apteka is one of my favorite restaurants, period. One of my biggest gripes about eating out is…read morethat everything is always so unhealthy and expensive. This isn't the case at Apteka, where everything is homemade and plant based. Despite the love and care that is put into each dish, the prices remain low (your entire meal will be less than the cost of a single steak at a traditional restaurant). The ambiance is a bit chaotic, so I recommend outdoor seating if possible. They don't take reservations, so you will have to wait unless you show up well in advance of opening. All of this is worth it! Everything is good here, but the ice cream we had on our last visit was exceptional. I was so full, but I would have eaten a second scoop. If ice cream is on the menu, get it. They use a dense cashew cream, which is imo the best base for vegan ice cream. I wish they would open up in DC, but this is the type of place that can only exist somewhere like Pittsburgh. If you are in the area, run there!

Excellent Polish food on the limited menuand an excellent matching wine list, thoroughly modern. It feels sleek and casual, with a professional and knowledgeable crew. Seating is chaotic since there aren't any reservations and you sit wherever there is space. I had fried pierogis and a cold beet soup. Packed with flavor and excellent on a warm summer night. The wine went so well with the food; I think it was all Eastern European wines, since what grows together goes together.

Most bowls are rice, greens, and/or beans based with various vegetables for toppings. Heartier than a salad but healthier than Chipotle. I've gotten lunch there a few times and have always been satisfied. My favorite bowl is El Jefe, which comes with rice, kale, black beans, corn, red onion, avocado, and a protein topping (I like the miso tofu but you can also get chicken). The bowl also comes with cilantro/lime sauce, which I do not get because it's very salty. That's my one complaint about Roots - despite their healthy ingredients, their bowls can get quite saucy and salty if you go with the default options. This particular location is well-staffed, so service is usually quick, but it can get a rush of students around 12pm.

My friend and I are both people of color and we personally felt mistreated by this restaurant. I am…read morewary of labeling things as prejudice but I truly cannot think of any other reason our waiter treated us like this especially seeing how differently she interacted with other tables. We were served by a waiter named Cass. She was pretty rude while taking our orders but I thought I was just overthinking. We then waited for over 50 minutes for 2 burgers while some tables that were seated after us got their food first/at the same time as us. Our waiter was also checking up and chatting with other tables and never ONCE came to our table to check on us. By the time our burgers and fries got to us, they were COMPLETELY COLD. But at this point I was so hungry and tired of waiting I didn't even care to ask for a new one. I understand how hard service jobs are which is why I tried giving her the benefit of doubt but the situation just got progressively worse. As the check came, I saw that my waiter charged me separately for fries despite me getting the $12 short stack meal deal that comes with them included. She also charged me 50 cents for onions despite it being included in the 4 toppings. I politely pointed this out the fact I was still charged for fries, to which she says it's because I asked for "extra pickles." ???????? I was like why would that disqualify me from the deal......To which she said "Um did you not ask for extra pickles? I said that you can't have any modifications." She then proceeded to stare at me blankly for 7 seconds, which was extremely creepy and unsettling. I then asked for the manager who was nice and did help me remove the extra charge but overall this was a horrible experience. If you are a person of color I would not recommend coming here as there is a chance you will not feel welcomed. This is the first time I haven't left a tip in years.

The pickled items are all done in house, and menu/kitchen are very thoughtful on how they execute. They do the pickling well, and they incorporate their ingredients into the dishes without making them feel unbalanced. Some specifics: Chicken fried pickles: Great ratio of batter to pickle. Generally, I think execution of pickled spears versus chips is fraught with peril. ButterJoint does these perfectly. These remain excellent and an unequivocal "get again" dish. Crispy chicken sandwich: chicken thighs done in one of the House brines, then battered and fried. This is a generous sandwich with two thighs. The batter is light and perfect and perfectly adherent. Kitchen cooked these pieces perfectly; no overdone portions. The tallow fries served as a side remain excellent, and the serving is very generous. "You can't eat just one." Pork belly sandwich: what a completely fun bite! Generous serving of pork belly, crispy on the outside and melting internally on a perfectly toasted roll. The condiments on this sandwich are perfect. The brunch burger is excellent. The egg is hard cooked so it doesn't come apart on the sandwich. M got the corned beef hash; the brisket on it is absolutely amazing, and there is a very nice grill on the potatoes. The poached egg on top is a complete delight. This is one of the better hashes that I have had. The falafel is fantastic. Well seasoned, perfectly cooked. The goat cheese crust with hot pepper jelly is an unexpected treat. Pickle shrimp are fun. The Mississippi comeback sauce is basically a remolade or maybe big Mac sauce. Would totally have again looking for a little cold shrimpy bite. We have never walked away disappointed by the menu or the kitchen. Good bar program, good draught list. Consistently gracious front of house team. Great for lunch or dinner, couples or families. Highly recommended.

Got to try their chicken sandwich and vinegar pie. The chicken sandwich came with a garlic sauce (toum) and fresh vegetables on their signature milk bread. Needless to say, the bun was amazing. The vinegar pie sounded super unique and intriguing so I gave that a shot. So glad I did! This is delicious. I can't even really describe it; there's a tiny note of acidity to it, but it's also super sweet. A nice little brown topping as well. It's just really good and you should try it. It just doesn't have quite a similar flavor and it's not as satisfying, with most of the food having some artificial flavor to it. I got to try their breakfast sandwich ("no egg" bagel), ranch, and peaches n cream egg roll. The egg just tasted strange. It was somewhat greasy and very artificial. The bagel itself was fine but just very standard. An okay price for the portion. The ranch it was served with was also watery and just didn't hit the spot. I will say though, I added a hashbrown and the hashbrown was very good. The egg roll was a bit better, but still had some artificial flavor to it. Portion was fine and the peaches tasted reasonably fresh for something like this. Not bad. All in all, it's an okay spot. The food looked better on the photos.
