Tucked away on a side street, this place is truly a hidden gem! Quaint, authentic, and welcoming from the moment we walked in. The service was fantastic! our server was happy to explain menu items and offer suggestions, which was so helpful. The restaurant was also extremely clean, with a fun Mexican-style atmosphere and authentic music playing in the background. We started with the complimentary warm chips and delicious salsa--always a great way to kick things off! The huarache was delicious, loaded with chorizo, chicken, and beef. But the real star for me was the quesabirria! Homemade tortillas, tender shredded beef, and Oaxacan cheese, served with mouthwatering consommé for dipping. SO good! And mark your calendars: they're celebrating their anniversary on September 13th with a mariachi band and other fun festivities outside. We'll definitely be back! read more

I love food! All cultural/ethnic cuisines, but above all I favor Mexican and Oaxaquen is the very best! La Oaxaquena is absolutely tops, they seem to get the best fresh ingredients daily. Haven't tried everything on the menu yet but I'm working on it! Very clean and charming. Enjoy!! read more

A best kept secret that I'm hoping gets out to the world! Stopped in for lunch today and from the time I walked in the door into the time I left, everything was absolutely top tier. The restaurant is decorated perfectly for the aesthetic of authentic Mexican food and, even more importantly, is unbelievably clean. But the food.... Wow, the food. I ordered three different kinds of tacos and the meats on each tasted expertly cooked and the house hot sauce was delicious. I ordered a side of guac, which also tasted like it was made seconds before being brought to the table. Lastly, the employees were all super accommodating and genuinely all seemed to be happy to be there, which is a huge plus. Good, but I'm interested in how the restaurant progresses over time. We ordered takeout, and the online ordering page was unavailable. Not a big deal: we just called the restaurant and placed an order. One issue that we encountered was that some number of items on the online ordering page were not actually available for ordering around lunchtime. That might just be a result of the restaurant being relatively new. In terms of the food, there was some good and some bad. The various salsas (roja and verde) were good. The roja was extremely mild, and the verde had a bit of a kick. The pico de gallo was about as expected, but it benefitted from a squeeze of lime. The chips were phenomenal. A perfect pairing for the various dips. The tacos were fine, but not exceptional. We ordered one shrimp taco and one fish taco. The fillings were reasonable, but not exceptional. Some additional toppings and extra sauces were helpful, but the experience still seemed flat. The chilaquiles were very good, but the online menu we had been referencing didn't mention the fact that they included a steak topping. Some of the menu photos on Yelp do seem to call that out. That says to me that they need to publish an official menu somewhere: the currently available information is less than clear. All told, this was a nice destination. The location was a little hard to get to, but there was reasonable parking available. The staff were friendly, and the space was nicely presented. Well worth checking out, but not exactly optimized for a vegetable forward experience. read more

The definition of La Oaxaqueña means an inhabitant or native woman from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. I've never been to Oaxaca before, so I cannot say I am an expert on authentic Oaxacan cuisine, but I will say I did enjoy my meal here. This restaurant is located in what seems to be a former house in Bethel Park, hidden off of the main road. It's easy to miss if you aren't specifically looking for it. We had a party of five, and were celebrating a birthday. The server was very nice and she was very accommodating. Most of our party enjoyed the food although one dish came out incorrect, but a replacement was made right away. The birthday boy enjoyed a dessert of Tres Leches cake with a candle on top ... very nice!! I would come back again ... Cheers! read more

My wife and I got takeout from here recently, and it turned out to be a great find. I ordered the Enchiladas Oaxaqueñas, and they were excellent--rich, well-prepared, and packed with flavor. My wife went with a selection of tacos and a tamale, and everything we had was delicious. ​Having lived in Mexico, my wife has a very high standard for what authentic food should taste like. After her first bite, her verdict was that it tasted just like Mexico. It is a solid, genuine spot, and we will definitely be back. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. The bulilding has been several restaurants over the years and the walls had some fresh bright paint but not much else has changed. We were quickly seated. Some warm chips and a very good salsa was served. My Enchiladas Oaxaquenas was tasty with a nice earthy mole sauce. Definitely the best Mexican food in town. Exceptionally fresh and delicious. Some interesting dishes you won't see elsewhere. A bit pricey compared to others but justified by portion size and quality. Try the guacamole. read more

We had the tamales chicken rajas, huarache with chicken, and quesabirria, and all were absolutely delicious. Probably the runniest salsa I've ever seen. (i.e, no chunks), and it was amazing. The only table available was outside. We were ok with it despite the 95 degree weather being it was in the shade with a slight breeze. After we received our food and drinks no one checked on us for 45 minutes! Both my two kids and I were out of drinks and hot as anything! Couldn't even eat all of our food but the waitress never came back after delivering our food. I would've taken the leftovers home however no one to ask for a to go box! Our party accidentally stumbled onto La Oaxaquena on Cinco de Mayo at the busy dinner hour. They informed us of a wait for seating and ordering, but we were patient and it was definitely worth the wait. First off, the staff was exceptional. Despite the long, busy day, they were still smiling and extremely responsive to all of our requests. The food was even more exceptional! One member of our party who was most familiar with Mexican cuisine rated it the best he's ever had. I would highly recommend this new restaurant. We found out you CAN make a reservation. read more

We have eaten here twice now and both experiences have been DELICIOUS. I immediately texted everyone that lives nearby telling them how passionately I feel about supporting this place. We have tried Enchiladas Oaxaquenas, Sopes, Guarache, Quesabirria, Lengua con Nopales tacos, and Chicken Green Sauce Tamales. Every single item was excellent- Mexican food like this in Pittsburgh is rare and you should take advantage. They're also lovely people who are friendly and happy to help. The food here is delicious, I have been here 3 times now and every time it has been great. The tacos (Al pastor, steak, chicken, birria) and the tamales (mole and green sauce) are all awesome, packed with flavor and you can tell it's authentically made. They're new so definitely experiencing some growing pains. Service was a little slow and you only get your main - all sides are separate.
