Husband and I passing through on vacation. We were craving Mexican food. Looked at reviews and decided on El Charro. Walked in and greeted by what seemed like unhappy folks. Decided to give it a try. Husband ordered chicken quesadillas, they were just OK. I ordered tacos, thinking surely they can't mess them up. Well they did. Food was cold when arrived and when I mentioned it she took the food away. When we received the check, the Tacos $16 charge still on the ticket. No im sorry it was not satisfactory or may I get you something else. We paid the ticket in full and left. If you have any other choice, go there! Would never return. read more

I do not care for when an employee is disciplined in front of me. I worked in a kitchen for many years and I know accidents can happen. The waitress dropped a glass, and the manager (assumedly) yelled at her, "that's 2 today and 1 yesterday. Those are very expensive. I am going to have to start taking it out if your pay" Do your business outside the ear of the customer!!! We had 2 tostados, one with chicken and one without. No change in price. I am 87% sure the chicken was canned. The waitress wasn't great, but I'm chalking that up to the manager. For the record, this place was 100% better than the other Mexican place in town. We are here right now and I have to say it's pretty bad all around. Food is terrible, margaritas are terrible. No flavor, everything was previous frozen or canned, the corn tortillas tasted store bought tortillas and thrown in the microwave. Yuck! I try to say at least one nice thing with every review. I ordered the burrito from their menu and despite the long wait to be seated, I found the food hot and tasty. However, we never received the salsa and chips before the meal because they were short on serving and cook staff which impacted our service. I found the burrito dry and it did not come with anything on the side such as beans, rice or salsa. Don't do it! First time I have never taken my leftovers home. I should have realized as soon as I tasted the salsa that it was not going to be a good meal. It tasted like cold tomato paste with some spices in it. The menu is extremely overpriced. Even if the food was good, it's overpriced but it's NOT GOOD, at all. This definitely seems like the type of restaurant that would get shut down by the board of health. Looking around you can see that it's not very clean. There was a guy that was asleep at the bar and a few others that were completely hammered. Our food was terrible. The refried beans tasted like fish or something they were absolutely disgusting. I was starving and I love Mexican food and I ate most of one of my tacos just because I was so hungry. My drink was terrible, it was supposed to come with fruit came It came with fruit flavoring which tasted very artificial and like a very cheap brand of alcohol. My husband kept commenting everything tasted spice powder, like the stuff you get from the supermarket when you want to make tacos from a kit and you don't mix it properly. I just want to warn people that don't know any better not to come here and basically take $100 bill and light it on fire. Because that's basically what we did. I left there hungry and disgusted with what I ate. Oh and the bill was wrong. If I didn't correct it with the bartender we would have been overcharged. What a waste of money. My boyfriend and I decided to grab a margarita on a whim after a long trip up north this past weekend. We walked into the restaurant and quickly spotted two seats at the bar, however both still had the previous customers leftover plates still occupying the area. We sat down anticipating these would be cleaned up promptly, but after waiting at least 20 minutes to put in a drink order they were still in front of us. When we were finally able to order we were told by the bartender that she would get to the dirty plates "eventually" and pushed them aside. The remainder of our time spent here was very awkward, the staff obviously does not work well together nor do they even like each other with the snarky exchanges made back and forth as if no one could hear them. After finishing our drinks we promptly paid and left, hoping this was just an off night for them. The next night we had family in town who mentioned they could go for Mexican, we decided to give El Charro another chance. I called in the afternoon to make a reservation for four at 6 o'clock and was told they could do that. We arrived at 6:05 and the hostess was nowhere to be found. We waited at least 10 minutes to get the hostess to notice us and were told we would have a 25 minute wait. After asking why we had to wait that long after making a reservation we were given a shrug and told "too many people" and she walked away without any sort of apology. After that, we took our business elsewhere and will not be returning in the future. read more

El Charro is, by far, the WORST Mexican food I have ever had the displeasure of eating! It was so bland, tasteless and mushy, I can't believe they have the nerve to charge $16- and up per plate of this swill. The guacamole was clearly from a package, as anyone who has ever eaten real guacamole knows the difference. (And anyone with taste buds!) My "burrito" was supposed to have guacamole, sour cream, ect but was so stuffed full of bland, mushy rice & bland, flavorless charred chicken, I thought they forgot to add those ingredients, till I ripped that nasty log apart with my fork, to see the light green smudges that I can only assume was guacamole. AND the service and atmosphere of the place is just horrid. One half of the place is like a regular bar/restaurant- and the other half, which we had the "joy" of sitting in, had another bar, loud music, pool tables and arcade games in the corner. The base on the Rap/Hip hop was so loud you could feel it rumbling through the floor. Then country music was blared, followed up by Leonard Skynards Free Bird. CLEARLY the owner has no clue as to if he/she wants a restaurant, a pool parlor or dance floor. This place really should reach out to one of thiose "save my bar/restaurant from impending doom" restaurant shows! And pronto! Will NEVER go back. Service was bad too, and the staff clearly has issues with each other...Not a good time, A real waste of money! AND SO GROSS! read more

Not sure why the other bad reviews. So they are slow on service because they don't have enough staff....welcome to Covid times people! And that wasn't even a factor for us at all it was less than 30 min between entering the door and getting our food. The bartender was manning both the bar and the tables and did a great job. Food was normal Mexican....very good. And the reviewer who said there was powdered sugar on the chimichangas...lol. It is Mexican cheese like cojita or something. This is a great Mexican restaurant. Definitely deserves more clientele. My girlfriend and I happened to be driving by when I noticed it and said let's give it a shot. When I walked in there was literally no other guests in the restaurant and I'll admit I was a little skeptical to see a Mexican restaurant completely empty. Maybe they had just opened, I don't know. But our waitress was outstanding, helpful and very nice, plus the food was great! They make guacamole fresh to order right at the table. The ambience in this restaurant is really nice. The decorations and paintings all over the walls were a really nice touch. We got chimichangas and they were delicious. The rice and beans on the side of the chimichangas are seriously good. I wouldn't doubt it if the owner is really Mexican. This restaurant is really doing it right. We got the churros for dessert and they were good however my only recommendation would be to add another scoop of ice cream to the churro dessert. Just saying it's a lot of churro. My water glass was always full and the bathroom was really clean. Fantastic service and if I'm ever back in Lincoln, I will for sure return to this restaurant. I hope they don't close down. We popped in here for some dinner before visiting the Ice village across the road. This place was listed as number 3 on the top restaurants in the area. We ordered table guacamole to start. It was not good plain and simple. I think the avocados were not ripe. Not being the complaining type we just ate a bit of it and stuck to the chips with salsa. Their salsa is very good! I ordered a Chicken burrito and my girlfriend ordered the veggie quesadilla. Both plates were below par. Mine was more of a wrap and was dry inside. Huge portion but lacked any real taste unfortunately. I did eat it however as I was pretty hungry. Passable at best. Hers was full of not fully cooked carrots and potatoes with cheese. Unusual but this may be an authentic style. Not sure but it's was not good. That could have been our fault. Easily the worst Mexican place I have been to and I travel a lot and so eat at a lot of places. Normally it doesn't take much to impress me but this place just wasn't good. It was also priced high. After a few good meals in Lincoln we decided to try mexican for dinner. I'll start with the best par t- the churros dessert platter was very good. The dinner entrees were poor. The beans and rice were blah. The tacos were soggy. The salsa was nothing special. The waitress, bless her heart, told us odd stories and was just confusing to deal with. Sorry El Charro, you're visitors for all over the northeast have way better mexican in their hometowns. I suggest you visit some other mexican restaurants to see what your food is missing. We were seated quickly as the place was slower because there was a snow storm that day. The chips and salsa was tolerable. Defiantly not the best but honestly not too bad. We were upset however that they did not have Queso! For dinner we had the trio of chicken, steak, and veggie fajitas which honestly were really damn good! I was pleasantly surprised and way to full to eat anything else. Wish they had come with lettuce and tomato but they did give you lots of other toppings. Came here last weekend with my boyfriend and we had an amazing time! We sat at the bar that was closest to the arcade and pool tables. The food was amazing, delicious and fresh. We were surprised at how fast the food came out too, as it seemed to be during the dinner rush. The service at the bar was excellent. The bartender was very busy with a full bar as well as patrons drinking in the game area, but she still made time to chat a little with us and was super friendly. She gave us great recommendations for dinner, and my boyfriend and I both agreed that we had never had a better margarita before! Highly recommend the "Ultimate" margarita. All staff was wearing masks and sanitizing regularly which was reassuring. The place was very clean; I was impressed at how clean the bathrooms were too! The complimentary chips were stale (no attempt to fix this when we brought this to our servers attention), but the salsa seemed fresh and made in house. We ordered the cheese quesadilla which looked to be kraft singles microwaved and barely melted in the flour tortilla. I ordered the Tacos al Carbon for my meal and it was just so so. My friend ordered a burrito. I shared the Pico did Gallo sour cream and other condiments as he didn't receive anything with his rather dry and flavorless burrito. We tried a mojito after our margaritas were gone. They were terrible.Not enough mint, or lime. Meh. Our family eats a lot of Mexican food. This place was mediocre at best. The chips and salsa were nothing special. I actually thought the salsa was from a jar but waitress said they make it. The inlaws shared an order of beef fajitas because who needs their own fajita meal when it is $22. What?! That's right. $22. And no, the portion was not larger or more full of meat than other places. Our 7 year old loves refried beans and ate two sides of them. (The sides of beans aren't listed on the menu but a small bowl runs $1.) My husband and I each had nachos. I would have had enchiladas or something but didn't want to pay almost $20 for just my own meal. Nachos were served on a huge plate. They were covered in melted mozzarella cheese. Huh? Not exactly Mexican, right? Guacamole on the top was tasty and the highlight of the nachos. I tried the Mexican rice which tasted like white rice mixed with their mediocre salsa. Our service was prompt, staff friendly and restrooms clean. Don't expect to hear mariachi or similar music - most of the music was rock music from the 90s. Homemade Mexican food was a very exciting headline to read. Overall the food is good. Table-side guacamole. Margaritas. Fajitas. And many other specialty dishes. Unfortunately the prices are far from reasonable. While El Charro's other restaurants are located in wealthier regions, the menu pricing doesn't not mesh with the customers of the Lincoln Woodstock area. $20+ entrees and $10 margaritas are simply out of range for the area and the setting of this restaurant. The decor is typical of a eatery situated in a strip mall. So again the price is hard to justify. Overall the food is great, but for value, my rating is poor. Unfortunately my family and friends of the area will unlikely be back. I wish for the success of El Charro due to its homemade recipes, but the ownership must review their pricing. We arrived with no one eating at the restaurant, though this was around 4pm. Our waitress was friendly and nice, though after ordering, we waited about 45-60 minutes for our food. After one refill of pop, our waitress didn't return. A second waitress came and apologized for the wait. She said that the restaurant hadn't seen a customer for two hours, and the cooks never saw our order. She said several times that it was "all the cooks' fault". To her credit, she promised to "make things better" and presented several options, including drinks on the house, half off and an extra entree. We were in a hurry and requested half off. I was excited for my enchiladas and mole as I hadn't had mole in a long time. The sauce ended up being sweeter and less spicy than I expect of mole. It also had a skin like gravy which makes me suspect my friend's meal was fresher. He was underwhelmed by his stuffed pepper. Overall, our meal was cheaper, and we had food in our stomachs after a day of bicycling, but this place gets one star for the wait, the poor quality food and the unprofessional way the wait staff played the blame game. I'm sorry for the residents of Lincoln that the other Mexican place in town is only 1.5 stars. read more

I have been to this restaurant twice and the food was great both times. The drinks were great. I love the table side guac....I read people thought it was expensive but that I pretty industry standard for table side. All of the entrees we have had have been delicious....they have both corn and flour tortillas which was awesome. The rice and beans are decent-but those are filler anyway for me. The pork and beef dishes we have had have been excellent. And I am picky about food. The fried ice cream was also flambé at the table which was a nice touch. The service was excellent.....the drinks are made to order so I do find that when I got busy, it was a bit more of a wait....but with it. The decor is improving.....it was a little spartan a first but the owner is making a ton of nice touches. We love this place!!! read more

I often go for lunch here when I'm on my own. There is mainly an empty cafe midday but service and food quality doesn't suffer from the low production. Their chips are fresh made and salsa is also from scratch. I usually have nachos or a chicken dish and both have been excellent. My only complaint is that the music is very loud. read more
