Old school since 1949. We arrived around 3pm and we were the only customers in the parking lot, which had me worried. No customers is a sign that the food must not be that good. Finally people were showing up for pick up orders. The dining room was closed due to moderate renovations, so it was take out only. The service was excellent as the employees kept coming out and checking on us and taking our order. The food we ordered was really delicious and the $4 margaritas were a perfect extra. read more

I wasn't thinking of doing a review on El Charro Café but, then I changed my mind. Simply for this reason, our server, Rhonda. We were here on a Sunday just before the lunch hour, and the place was pretty busy with customers, which is a good sign. We were seated immediately, and before we knew it, Rhonda our server, gave us the menu to look over, plus it was our first time here. We were actually passing through Yuma, Arizona, and needed to eat. El Charro Café is located on west 8th Street, two blocks west of 4th Avenue, in Yuma, Arizona. When I finally decided what I wanted to order, and typical me, I order something simple, three beef tacos with a side of rice. During the time we were waiting for our orders, I got into a conversation with Rhonda, our server, about the Gutierrez family. My curiosity got the best of me. There used to be another restaurant with the Gutierrez name, La Casa Gutierrez, which used to operate out of a house, and had incredible Mexican food. It no longer is in operation. In talking to Rhonda, it turns out it was the same family members that ran that restaurant as El Charro Café. Rhonda also worked at the other restaurant. She probably would of given me more history but, who wants to hear my questions after all she is working. My three tacos came, and man oh man, I was in "Mexican Food Heaven". After we were finished eating, I thanked Rhonda for her hospitality. Not only are their dishes tasty but, even the salsa had nice flavor to it. From what I take, their Saddle dishes are very popular with the locals here. Just remember if you ever order one of the Saddle plates, be warned you will be presented with a lot of food. If you are ever passing through Yuma, stop by here, and as always take your time, enjoy every bite of your meal. You won't regret it. The Gutierrez family also operate Chili Pepper. Which explains why La Casa Gutierrez hangs on the wall at that place. We felt at home here at El Charro Café, and if we ever come through Yuma again, this definitely will be the place to stop. Wow, really impressed! A family business on 74 years of service. Our third year in Yuma for the winter and this is by far the BEST Mexican food you will find in Yuma. Driving back to San Diego and we needed to stop for dinner. In the mood for Mexican and ended up here. It was busy, a good sign! We were seated fairly quickly and immediately greeted by a friendly server who was the best throughout our whole meal. Really kind and hospitable. The food portions are generous and oh, so tasty! I ordered a cheese crisp to start because I only first noticed these on the menu when in Sedona, AZ and fell in love even though the concept is so simple. They are addictively good. I had them add jalapenos to ours. We each got combo plates which of course come with rice and beans. I think a good measurement of a Mexican restaurant is the quality of their rice and beans and these did not disappoint. Fluffy, flavorful rice and rich, creamy beans. We loved it all. Spent the week in Yuma on business and had the opportunity to visit El Charro Cafe once for lunch and once for dinner - both with friends. Mexican style tacos - loved them! Authentic Mexican on the north side of the border for lunch. Water as my beverage. Combinacion Numero Uno another night for dinner. A rolled taco, beef tamale, red enchilada, green chile con carne, refried beans, rice and a flour tortilla hit the spot. As for my beverage, I shared a pitcher of Margarita with 1800 Jose Cuervo. Meals were tasty and well prepared. Tortilla chips with mild and hot sauce served for both lunch and dinner. Plenty of food - I ate it all. Busy Mexican restaurant that has been around for over 5 decades. Friendly and polite staff - server came back on several occasions to check on us. I stayed in Yuma for a business trip. My coworker who grew up in Yuma recommended this place. The hostess/manager was super friendly. This place seems to be very popular and I can see why. Everything from the chips and salsa, drinks, food was delicious. I honestly don't think I found one negative thing wrong about this place. The beans were so good. I got the chiles rellenos plate with rice and beans. It's so much food! The chips were served nice and warm, but not greasy or dry. They were perfectly crispy. The manager recommended the secret salsa which I asked for and I loved it! They also sell it by the jar/pint. I definitely recommend you take some home with you. Pleasantly surprised at this gem in Yuma. We ordered beef fajitas. They were very flavorful with handmade tortillas. Salsa was also amazingly delicious. Added on a margarita special to top it off. If I could have given them a zero, I would have. My family and I have eaten there for years. Many of us have moved out of Yuma; however, whenever we get to visit, we always go to El Charro. In fact, whenever we are driving through Yuma, we stop and pick up rolled tacos...they WERE the best. One of our family members was having a gathering this past weekend and when asked where we would like to eat, we all voted for El Charro. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT & WASTE OF MONEY! The service was good, even though they were packed. After a 30-minute wait, we were seated. The only truly edible item on our table was the cheese crisp. The hot sauce had absolutely no spice to it. The chunky salsa wasn't awful but had little to no spice. I believe they no longer have true Yuma Arizona cooks. They have absolutely no idea how much an authentic Yuma AZ rolled taco not to mention the sauces on the food should be in the... We were so sorry we wasted our money! read more

I want to preface this by saying I am a vegetarian since the mid 90s, and that I understand it is traditional to use lard in Mexican dishes, and I don't expect everywhere to offer food without it. However, I have eaten here maybe 10 times in recent years. I have been told each time that the red enchilada sauce and beans are vegetarian. So I really enjoyed eating these items and appreciated that they could accommodate. The burritos, the enchiladas... with modifications like no rice I was told were vegetarian. Fast forward to last night, I hadn't been since 2020 (I live in NY) so I asked the server to confirm which things were vegetarian. She said NONE OF IT, and when I asked if it used to be she said it never has been. Maybe they used to have whole beans and now they don't? I don't even want to know about the tortillas. Obviously the rice is usually chicken stock, I'm used to that. She seemed to feel bad, because there was basically nothing on the menu I could eat. My boyfriend and I got some mediocre sopapillas, ate their delicious chips and salsa, and left for probably the last time... I am really bummed out about this. Not only because I feel my beliefs were disrespected or I was deliberately lied to sooo many times. I recognized the server we usually have, and she has worked there for years. How could she not know? Please, El Charro, educate your staff on ingredients or include this information on your menu like some other places do. Maybe offer whole beans or a couple menu items, besides just veg fajitas, so us meat free folks have something filling to enjoy. At the very least, be transparent about your ingredients so people don't mistakenly betray their beliefs... I am cringing seeing El Charro being listed online as veg friendly. Pretty solid home cooking type Mexican dinner. Got the Chile relleno, taco, beans and rice. Ample portions of beans and rice. Chili relleno above average, taco a little greasy, but not bad. Good chips, watery style salsa. Friendly waitress. Only complaint... Not used to Yuma water. Iced tea was cloudy and tasted like a fish swam in it. Asked for bottled soda, they don't have any. Not this. we were so hungry, was late, 8:00, 10 min wait to be seated, 5 min wait to get a menu, another 12 to be asked if we wanted drinks, another 10 minute wait to take our order, and a long wait to get the food. so, the 4 of us were hungry. this was the worst restaurant in my life. and I'm old. I've been to thousands of Mexican places, this was horrible. chips - terrible. very tough, chewy, stale, they BEND, a chip should not be bendable. the fresh salsa was good, the canned looked so unappealing we didn't touch it. I had a carne asada burrito, was dry, the tortilla was crunchy over toasted in places and raw in places, folded around the insides, not rolled as it was too stiff to roll. I tore it open to look inside. tomatoes were way UNripe, picked those out. the whole inside was DRY. I added some of my refried beans to the inside to make it moist, and ate some that way. the beans had no flavor. My friend had the carne asada tacos, the meat he got was little dried up tiny things looked like cat treats. Another friend had fajitas that he picked at. It was 80% green peppers, which he moved to the side of the pate. Long wait. Long long long wait. And terrible food. The worst. Ick. Never again. read more
