As soon as we sit, our server brought us some bread and a spicy sauce which I really like that detail, in Peru is very common to eat bread with any signature spicy sauce. The bread was good but the sauce had this strong taste i couldn't tell what it was but it was overpowering the taste of the sauce. We started with a beer and a passion fruit juice that was delicious! Then to start, we ordered a Papa a la Huancaina and it was good and really creamy. For entrees, we ordered the Chicharrón de Pescado which was really fresh and it was really good! Also, we got a Veggie Chaufa Rice and it was good but it throw me off a little because there were green beans in the rice and that's not very common. This place is awesome! My husband and so stopped in after getting a referral. There was no wait to be seated; however, what was available was a small table by the door. We were warmly greeted and ordered a Sangria pitcher and appetizers. After we placed our order, our waitress asked if we'd like to move to a bigger table. Which we did and it worked out great. The portion sizes here are large and it's hard not to order multiple items from the menu. Everything was delicious! Food was not up to part, I read the reviews and nothing to do with what I experienced. 1st we ordered the causa de pulpo and was over salted. I ordered a parihuela mixta and when they brought it back it had a hair inside the soup, when I called i believe it was the manager he took out the hair from the soup and said if i wanted to order another soup it was going to take longer.. did he expect me to eat the soup just because he removed the hair??? This location works on a first come first serve basis so either go at a random time or prepare to wait to be seated. They offer authentic Peruvian dishes and serve generously sized portions. The Lomo Saltado was packed with favor, which made eating the fries so much better as they absorbed a bit of the juice. I haven't had Peruvian food in a while and El Chalan reminded me of why I love it so much! I ordered a little bit of everything because I couldn't decide on just one thing! Everything on the menu looked so good!! Everything came out super quick and fresh and the portions are very generous. Even if I had ordered just one thing I'm pretty sure I would've had leftovers for later that day. The food tasted AHH-MAZINGGGG no complaints there. The service was also on point. Everyone was very friendly and attentive ensuring we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal. Lastly, they are working super hard to ensure they are complying with all CDC guidelines. The tables are spaced out inside the restaurant and they also offer outdoor seating. Discovered a nice little Peruvian restaurant. With incredible ceviche, little salads called "causa", creamy shrimp soup, lomo salteado, pollo salteado, Peruvian style fried rice, fried whole fish and unique desserts. The menu is pretty extensive. Their staff is professional, courteous, quick to assist. Everyone works together to bring the best service to the table. This place was recommended to me by an uber driver. I saw a long line as we were driving by and he said the food was great, and guess what? The food was fantastic! I can't believe how perfect the seasoning was, how quick the service was and how generous the portions were. I ordered the grill seafood platter which included mussels , calamari, octopus , sea bass , shrimp with potato and tomato. To accompany that, I ordered a chicken and steak chaufa rice ! ( perfection - this order was enough for about 2-3 people) and I also got to taste my friends fried red snapper which was really good as well. After a long day of shopping with the family we were all in the mood for some Peruvian style Ceviche and Seafood. After some discussion my cousin recommended we head over to El Chalan. I had not been to El Chalan for quite some time; however, this restaurant has been around for a very long time at their location on SW 40 Street directly across from Tropical Park. This has been a family owned restaurant pretty much forever and last I remember the food was awesome, so we piled in to the SUV and headed over. Really did not take a very long time to sit down once we arrived but the restaurant was packed which is a good sign. The atmosphere was pretty casual and laid back which fit the bill just right. For dinner we all started with a few appetizers including the Potatoes Huancaina Style and Mixed Seafood "Vuelve a LaVida" which sort of translates to "Bringing Back from the Dead". LOL! Man let me tell you the ceviche here is absolutely awesome. I am pretty sure the cure for zombies in the Walking Dead could actually be this dish. Man it was packed with all kinds of goodness including fish, shrimp, octopus, onions, diced scallops, etc. For the main dinner items we ordered Jalea Mixta (Peruvian Fried Seafood Goodness), Parrillada de Marisco's (Grilled Seafood Platter), Pescado al Chalan (Fish in Creole Sauce with Shrimp) and the Seafood Soup. Does not sound like a lot of food for five people but believe me the portions are big. We all ended up taking food home. Prices are also very affordable and their menu is quite extensive to boot. One thing I found surprising is they charge you for more bread once the initial bread basket runs out. I highly suspect this may be related to customers wanting to dunk lots of bread in their tasty soups and sauces. So if you love bread just know you will need to pay a little extra. Not a big deal as again this place is very affordable for seafood. Service was excellent and fast so no issues there from what I could tell. The owner actually came to our table to wish us a Happy New Year and thank us for coming in. Very nice guy! Parking is pretty available as they are located in a strip mall but it can get packed as there are a few other good restaurants located there as well. Overall, I highly recommend El Chalan. I always order take out from here. I ordered some Ceviche online and went to the window to pick it up 15 minutes after the due time. I stood at the window for 15 minutes and was not acknowledged while they answered phones and talked amongst themselves. I had been coming to this place for many years always satisfactory, in the last few months it changed for the worse. Prices skyrocketed ($24 for a ceviche) and they fill the ceviche with onions instead of fish or seafood. A ceviche order is 1/3 of fish and 2/3 of onions. I will not go back and told several friends and they all agree. Now we go to another Peruvian ceviche place where the prices are 30% lower and the ceviche is fish and NOT onion. Good bye Chalan. Great Peruvian food at a reasonable price. Restaurant is a 4.5 stars. This is a great place to enjoy some ceviche or other seafood dish without having to spend an arm and a leg. The location is setup in the busy shopping center across from Tropical Park where McDonald's is located, even though is constantly busy there is always parking. I love their menu because they have soooooooo many choices although I am guilty of usually getting the same plates. This last time I went I had the pescado al Chalan which is grilled fish with sautéed shrimps in a seafood béchamel sauce with mushrooms and white rice. My mother ordered the pescado al ajillo which is grilled fish with sautéed shrimps in seafood garlic sauce and white rice. My mother and I shared an order of tostones. Both entrees where very tasty and you can tell the fish and shrimps were cleaned very well. That's a must!! Now some of my other go to plates are the following: lomo saltado (angus beef sautéed with onions, tomatoes & mixed with French fries & white rice), jalea mixta (fried seafood mountain), jalea de pescado (fried fish mountain), potatoes a la huancaina, ceviche mixto (fish, calamari, shrimp, & octopus), and pescado a lo macho (fish filet served in home made white wine béchamel sauce with shrimp, calamari, & octopus). This place was a complete mess- first there was nobody at the door to at least let you know you to grab a table- our waitress took forever to come over to the table- and I order the " pollo asado w fries and rice" we get our plates and everything was good so far- in till I notice everybody got what they wanted, but my order, I ask the waitress that I had order fries instead of a salad and she literally came over and grab the salad out of my plate and put the salad on a plate and took it back and brought French fries, weird I know- than I started eating the rise and oh surprise!!!!!!!!! 4.5 stars, and this place almost gets a 5th from me. In summary, El Chalan Restaurant has great, authentic Peruvian food, attentive service and very reasonable prices. Two of us came here for dinner and got a large ceviche to share as an appetizer, we each got an entree so large that we were unable to finish it, a bottle of wine to share and a coffee to finish the meal, and the total price for everything we both had was just a bit more than $70. In Miami, that's nearly unheard of! El Chalan is located in a strip mall that seems to be occupied by a bunch of smaller restaurants and businesses, all local and no chains that I saw. There are a few different entrances to this restaurant, one that takes you into the dining room and the other that takes you to an area with a lunch counter where they make the coffees and have the pastries and have a walk up/carry out window. We arrived, had a seat at the lunch counter and were given menus, glasses of ice water and a basket of bread with butter and a cilantro based hot sauce right away. We ordered the ceviche de pescado to share as a starter. It was really good, piled high with fish along with onions, sweet potato and cuzco & cancha corn. We also ordered a bottle of cabernet sauvignon to share. For my main course, I had the pescado a la chorillana, which was a perfectly cooked piece of fish buried under cooked sweet onions and peppers, with potatoes and rice. It was incredibly good! As mentioned, service was spot on all night, the only minor hiccup is that they didn't have a few of the wines on their list in stock when we were here (but when they returned to tell us they were out, they brought a few alternative bottles to offer). Otherwise I'll definitely return back here for authentic Peruvian from a mom and pop looking restaurant at a price that's more than reasonable! read more
