Fans of El Atoron at it's old location beware. For what ever reason, the food at this new location isn't as good. It is still good, mind you, it just didn't knock my socks off like the old place near Barcadia did. The tacos I tried were good, and the torta was as big as my head. My boyfriend and I split the Mexicana torta, which contains chorizo. One big difference between the old and new locations is that the new location does not have salsa on the table. If you would like salsa, you have to ask for it. I only discovered this after we finished eating, so don't make the same mistake I did. The food is still good, but the tacos weren't as fat, the salsa wasn't as zippy... Tacos cost $1.50 and tortas are $7.50. The new interior is clean and very shiny with all it's new paint and easy to read signage. El Atoron is housed in La Popular's old location. read more

I love this place! Don't go on the weekend. They are packed and the quality goes down. I get the chicken quesadilla and beans, for some reason they don't sell rice, or they just wouldn't sell me any..lol. The only drawback is that they don't serve lettuce and tomatoes and other toppings on their tacos so I just stick to the quesadillas. read more

I'm new to yelp but I believe in giving credit where credit is due. I, unlike other patrons, never tried the other location so I was new to the El Atoron experience. My boyfriend and I are huge fans of (what we like to call) street tacos. We've tried several places around here and we've never been really, truly, impressed. We settled, plain and simple. I was driving home from work one day and saw the Grand Opening sign and decided to stop in. Much to my chagrin, there was a huge language barrier but I didn't let that hinder me from ordering. I referred back to my high school days of Spanish class and I got by. Now on to the food. The first time I went, I ordered lengua, pollo, and bistek tacos. Everything was exceptional. The tacos were loaded with cilantro and onion and we were given a lot of lime and salsa to go with our order. Everything was "melt in your mouth" tender and I loved it. Raved about it to everyone I knew. I went back a second time and the food wasn't as good. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was good but wasn't as good as it was the first go round when I was knocked off of my feet. The third time I went, the order was wrong (first time I ever experienced that). I placed my typical order of lengua, chicken, and steak tacos and was only given chicken and steak. That was a bit disappointing because I was really looking forward to lengua. Overall, I've been really happy with this restaurant and will still rave about it. First of all, let me start stating that something happened to El Atoron when they moved from Henderson to this new location. The food isn't as good as it used to be...don't get me wrong, this Atoron will be one of my spots to hit for a quick Taco, and Quesadilla fix. I would highly recommend that y'all try their Quesadillas of Huitlacoche (Corn Smut, A fungus that grows on ears of corn), Hongos (Mushrooms), and Nopales (Cactus). I usually get the Huitlacoche (my all time favorite), and the Hongos Quesadillas since they happen to be very good. They are made with freshly made Tortillas de Masa (This special flour is dried corn that has been soaked in limewater and finely ground) so you're going to enjoy a Home Style type of Quesadilla. Red hot sauce is good, but the beef and al pastor didn't impress me at all. The beef flavor is me huh and the flavor of al pastor is too sweet and it just did not feel right. This is the best and possibly the only place to get huitlacoche quesadillas in Dallas and if you've never had these then I suggest you come here immediately. It's a fungus that grows only on corn and the flavor is amazing, any lover of mushrooms will be thrilled. I have no idea why any morons would be giving poor reviews for this place, it's amazing and I have extremely high standards for Mexican food. My father recently went to Mexico twice and he was blown away by their huitlacoche and he said this was almost as good so that is high praise. Maybe they have other dishes that are not so good so if you are worried then stick to the quesadillas, hongos (mushrooms) and huitlacoche ('heavenly' corn fungus). This is one of the best small-scale Mexican restaurants in the area. They serve traditional Mexican food. I'm a big fan of the huaraches. My girlfriend loves the lingua tacos. The tortillas are freshly made. It is a small place in a small strip mall so we always order to go. If you order ahead, you can pick your food up in the drive-thru. The service is good. It gets crowded sometimes because the food is that good. I've never had a bad experience and I have been eating here for a while. I live in the area so the taco options are endless but this place is a stand out and it is affordable. read more

My experience at this location was not really good. I went with my family here to eat that were traveling from a great distance. I ordered a huarache with beef. After receiving my plate, on the second bite. I pulled out a long hair attached to my mouth and huarache. It was a nasty feeling so i spit out the food in my mouth onto the plate. I took the plate to show them the hair, after the lady was giving me a look like i put it there. Then she took my plate back too the back of the kitchen and told me to have a seat. After like twenty minutes of examination they took back there. They call me and tell me. They won't be charging me for the plate and that's it. They didn't offer anything else. They ask if i wanted another huarache and i ask if she was gonna charge me they said yes. But with the feeling of disgust in my stomach, i lost my appetite. Since that day. I haven't been back. Wow this place has changed. Not the same staff nor great customer service. It's funny how the I gave the old place on Henderson 5 stars and here...well not so great. Stay away from the Aguas water down lemonade needs to be sweetened. The Cubana Torta was great but the tacos are lacking everything, flavor, presentation, and love. As you guys already know im supeer picky when it comes to Mexican food. This place is super close to my house and i always drive by so I decided to give it a shot. I ordered a mushroom quesadilla and two cubana tortas and two al pastor tacos to go. It was a little pricey but when i got home and i opened the food containers i was very surprised to see what i got: The quesadillas were perfectly coooked, the meat of the torta was tender and with so much flavor and the tacos where pretty good as well. I guess they had to take it down at the old location, maybe the new locale has it hooked up again. Either way, great tacos but one of the only places nearby that does chorizo tacos (most places only do chorizo and egg). This has become my favorite taco place in Dallas. Very delicious tacos *and* they sell breakfast tacos. Their chilaquiles are excellent as well as their al pastor. This is not a great place to dine in at, though. AC often doesn't work, paint on the floor is peeling, and they do this weird thing where they have two tv's blaring at the same time on the same channel, except one plays slightly behind the other all while they have a radio in the kitchen going at highest volume. read more

Tried the el pastor, chicken, and fajita tacos. Neither of them had very much flavor. I prefer the small yellow tortillas--not the preservative tasting white ones that this place has. Read good reviews on the Henderson Ave. location, so was excited when they opened only blocks from my home. That excitement was short-lived. We went a couple of weeks after the new location opened and the inside already looked beat-up. And the service was rude to boot. Drive past this place everyday, will never stop here again. I love all the different options beyond just tacos- huaraches, sopes, Mexico City-style quesadillas, etc. The masa on the guesadillas was was really nice and crisp and just well constructed with the right balance of cheese and lettuce. But the meats didn't really stack up- none were particularly flavorful and all were a little dry. I tried huitlacoche for the first time; since it was my first, I'm no expert but it did have a pleasant mushroomy taste and texture and the corn was a nice sweet balance. But it was moist that the masa gets soaked through so that wasn't ideal! Not terribIe but I wouldn't go out of my way for this place again. read more
