I've been passing this post for sometimes. Finally decided to go in. Note, it's by Deep Ellum and the prices reflected that. We ordered three tacos, some soda, fajitas plate and a flan. Order came out fast. Polite staff. Napkins can be requested from the counter. Menu can be found on their screens on the wall. Telemundo played on their Tv. They take tap pay. Fajita meat was chewy. My taco breading was a little overcooked but worked. The taco proteins, onions and cilantro were tasty. Flan was legit! Red and green sauces also available at the counter. I love authentic Mexican & looking at the menu... that it was. Torta was a 1/2 French Bread's worth of sandwich! I got a beef & chicken with cheese onions & cilantro! Where do I start?... It's been such a long time since I've eaten at El Atoron. It used to be my go to for all of my favorite authentic Mexican street foods. That is until they were forced to relocate from Henderson Street due to gentrification. Luckily, I was in the area after leaving a local farmer's market when I looked up "tacos near me" and El Atoron showed on my list. I immediately got excited and knew we had to go there. After placing our order, our food was ready w/in 10 minutes. Their food & sauces are absolutely delicious and full of so much flavor. So much that we ended up ordering food to-go to have for dinner. Also, the people & service was just as amazing as I remember it being. They are so welcoming, almost making you feel like family. And I'm not sure if the woman who took the order is the owner, but I remembered her from the old location and she remembered me. When you have customers that visit you at your not so new location, that tells you something. The decor, photos, and artwork also gives you a peek into what it's like to step foot in Mexico City. I love it. Just know this is a very small location so expect to get lucky if you're able to dine in. I'd say it holds 16 people comfortably, but it's what is expected when you go to a taqueria. I truly should've left a review on this place a long time ago but I forgot. I'm from California and have been in Texas for less than a year now. In MY opinion, California has more Mexican influence. Texans always tell me that they have the best Mexican food because they're so close to the border but after having food from both places I HIGHLY disagree. Texas is more "Tex-mex", California has more authentic Mexican food. THIS PLACE reminded me of home. I had a huarache and I wish I had taken a picture to show you! I returned to El Atoron tonight for the first time in about a year, and the experience was a mixed bag: Pastor taco was outstanding, stuffed full of fresh, flavorful meat, expertly seasoned. Lengua taco was disappointing, with just 3-4 little scraps of meat in it, so most bites were just tortilla. Huitlacoche quesadilla also suffered from a skimpy hand on the filling, making most bites mostly bready disappointments. I love that El Atoron is one of the few Mexican restaurants in the zip code with lengua and huitlacoche, but if they are now skimping on filling for these ingredients, I will lose my only reason for driving 10 minutes instead of five for taking care of my regular taco fix. read more

I have been a little hesitant in coming here a lot of my family members have had mixed experiences. My brother took a bite from his beef huarache and pulled out a long hair from his mouth, after the employees examined the plate for 20 minutes they decided that they would not charge him and that's it. No "im sorry for the inconvenience" My father visited here and usually they call out names for you to go get your plate. Two Caucasian males walked in ordered after my father and the lady at the counter grabbed their plates and set them nicely on their table with their drinks which you are supposed to get your self from the cooler. Then they screamed out my father's name for him to pick up his plate well let's just say he did not feel like going up there,he felt it was same race discrimination . . . In the summer my mom went she said the AC did not work and it was just terrible customer service. So I have been hesitant on going there but after getting off of work late I decided to give it a try I ordered the Al Pastor Quesadilla and it was delicious. I did not expect any service I ordered, paid, picked up my plate and ate and then left. My review is based solely on the food. I'll start it out by saying the parking lot is horrible where Al Atoron is located! The inside reminds me of a travel agency with a giant photo of Mexico City on the wall. They have tacos, Tortas, quesadillas, sopas, gorditas, and a few other items. We ordered the torta, which was HUGE! It was the size of the plate and loaded with meat! We also ordered a quesadilla (which isn't your normal cheese and tortilla) and a Gordita. The quesadilla reminded me of a giant taco, and was pretty filling. i wouldn't recommend coming here the food wasn't too bad at all, i can admit, but the service there was horrible. i ordered chicharrón (pork) gorditas but instead got chicken. kindly went up to ask them if i could get the pork instead. they took the chicken gorditas back but then the two girls up front just gossiped about my friend & i. about how they thought we were wrong, we didn't like the food & the cook even went out to look at us. they just made the situation so much more than it had to be & made us so uncomfortable.. all in all you can get the same tasting food at any other taqueria place. in the end the gorditas were still not what i asked for but it was better tasting than the plain chicken until i realized they probably just put the meat that stays behind with all the grease bc it was mostly grease with a few meat shreds .. hope that's just a wrong assumption but i wouldn't put it past them they way they were talking read more

I have been coming here consistently for the last few years and I can say that they are one of the best in Dallas. The Tortas are huge, tacos are fantastic, and the chilaquiles are always what the doctor ordered when I'm hungover. It's small, reasonably priced, and quick to serve. They have signature tortas but you can request single meats all the same. My only complaint would be the napkins are too flimsy but it's not enough of a reason to give it less than 5 stars. read more

I'm making El Atoron one of my "real Mexican" food spots to go to. This is truly authentic Mexican food. Their food items are known to be from Mexico City like their famous "quesadillas". I love that they are made from scratch when you order them which it is also why order can take a little long but once you get the food it's all worth it. I tried the sopes and quesadillas chicharrón and fajita, everything has been so yummy and gets you full. Restaurant is small, they are tables inside for you to eat and they even have a drive thru! A little on the expensive side for the neighborhood...there is better food with more offered for less further down Columbia Ave, but it's good food nonetheless. Each time I've been in, they haven't had some of the things listed on the menu. (First time: chicharrones, second time: lengua.) Both times were after 5 though so it could have ran out. Likes: Good size huaraches, good meat (except chicken), nice portions of meat on the tacos...The green salsa is AMAZING, nice amount of heat!! Dislikes: For the price of the gorditas and sopes, they could put tomatoes on them. (They already have them in house for the tortas.) The chicken was extremely dry. All in all, it's a good place. Nice change up from La Popular but they should definitely try to match up with the prices of the neighborhood. read more

Hole in the wall taqueria. They actually have a drive thru for pickup. They serve tacos, tortas, quesadillas among other typical dishes u find in a taqueria. I decided to try the pastor, tripas and suadero tacos. They were very delicious and everything you could expect from an authentic taqueria. They claim their tacos are "estilo df" (from mexico city) but i couldn't really taste an difference from any other tacos. Ordered carry out on a Sunday, the wait wasn't too long and the staff was pleasant. The fajita, tripa and al pastor tacos are good, nothing mind blowing. The red salsa is super spicy! Also, tried the huaraches (fajita) those were pretty good, same fajita as in the tacos, the toppings were fresh. The tortas are huge and are ok, you gotta eat'em quick or they get soggy. Last item and the one I was most excited to try was a pambazo...was kinda disappointing, the chorizo and potato filling was mushy and paste like and the red chile hadn't been properly grinded, so you ended up chewing on big pieces of the chile :( I'd go again, but just stick to the tacos. read more

Fans of El Atoron at it's old location beware. For what ever reason, the food at this new location isn't as good. It is still good, mind you, it just didn't knock my socks off like the old place near Barcadia did. The tacos I tried were good, and the torta was as big as my head. My boyfriend and I split the Mexicana torta, which contains chorizo. One big difference between the old and new locations is that the new location does not have salsa on the table. If you would like salsa, you have to ask for it. I only discovered this after we finished eating, so don't make the same mistake I did. The food is still good, but the tacos weren't as fat, the salsa wasn't as zippy... Tacos cost $1.50 and tortas are $7.50. The new interior is clean and very shiny with all it's new paint and easy to read signage. El Atoron is housed in La Popular's old location. read more
