I had forgotten how good their tortas are. The al pastor torta is one of my favorite sandwiches in NYC. Extremely flavorful, great combination of ingredients and their homemade hot sauces are superb. I recommend you order your torta "con todo" and if you like spice, add on their orange/red hot sauce (they have four to choose from, one that is red, the orange red, green (salsa verde) and a light green that is almost creamy). Not the cheapest at $3-$4 ranges but they make it up in being a sizable taco with legit salsas. Had: Carnitas - not bland as usual. Use the red sauce. Fish taco - my favorite out of all. A lot of fish filling. Chivo Goat - unique filling texture is undefeated. Tamale - $2! Good filling to tamale ratio. I ate it with green salsa. Staff is friendly. Menu changes and quality of their tacos have declined substantially over the last six months. I love finding hidden treasures, gems, undiscovered neighborhoods and even divey hole in the wall places with incredible food. A couple years ago I thought of this place as that, an amazing, authentic Mexican spot for great tacos, and had a five star review drafted. The first time there, a customer in line said he came from another borough occasionally just to get their unmatchable tacos including beef tongue and another interesting type of taco I never had. I was feeling brave so tried his recommendations which were so tender, juicy and delicious. When I visited once during COVID, the menu selection was the same but prices went up, which was fine. However, the recent visit, the menu had changed, and the delicious, interesting tacos were no longer on the menu (citing the beef tongue was too expensive). I ordered three tacos including the steak, fish, and pork: the pork taco was good, the fish taco was decent, and the steak taco was overcooked and dry. The chips were both stale and so greasy the grease seeped through the the bag they were in; and the guacamole was saucy and not good. One thing they still have that I like is the light green moderately spicy sauce for the tacos that is incredible. I would recommend keeping the interesting taco and burrito options and charging more for them. And keeping things fresh like they did in the past. I had the al pastor and fish tacos, and some ice cold horchata. Yum! Al pastor was moist with obvious pineapple pieces. Fish was fried tilapia I think. They had a nice selection of sauces. For NYC Mexican, this place is better than most. It's super casual. Kind of like a Mexican diner with a menu that includes breakfast options. It's a step above a dive--a small step. I've had this place saved for ages but never visited because most of the people in my small COVID-safe circle have lived in Cali and don't trust NYC Mexican food. Finally got to try and I am so impressed. While the Al Pastor meat is a bit non-traditional, it's still flavorful and tender. The pineapple could be a little more ripe but at least it's fresh and not canned pineapple. They double up on the corn tortillas for the tacos and don't skimp on toppings. Tacos are $3 and the torta $6.99. The plain cheese quesadilla is only $2! And comes with avocado/salad/tomato on the side. The vegetarian tamales (jalapeños & cheese) are by far my favorite and only $1.50! Such an amazing deal. Note that their hot sauces are HOT. First time we got the red sauce and almost didn't enjoy the meal. The second time we got the green (medium) sauce and still had to be careful. Most of the taco toppings are an additional cost except for onions, cilantro, and lime, but it tastes delicious just with the basic toppings. They also have four different hot sauces that are complimentary. I love the double corn tortillas and the tender, juicy carnitas. Best carnitas ever! (Al pastor and asada is typically my gauge of a taco stand/cart) Extra plus on the excellent fresh masa tortilla! Tamale was freshly steamed to its death and was mushy but the chicken was not dry. FYI: the green sauce version was easily a 7 on the spicy scale. And if you add the habanero salsa (the orange-ish one) you'll probably die. If you are in El Barrio, pay El Aguila a visit. It conjures up memories of being in Mexico City both inside and outside the restaurant space. And, while I am no expert in Mexican food, I would venture to say the food is authentic and tasty! You can order directly with the guy doing the cooking. And pay at the cashier after. I tried their cheese quesadillas and some gaucamole and beans. The food tasted great but my order was not captured correctly, leading to an awkward experience at the cashier. Apparently I had not paid for the larger side of beans that came with my order and I needed to pay extra for jalapenos since they seemingly didn't hear me or just forgot. This in spite of a tip that exceeded the amounts in question. I will be back to give El Aguila another try. This no frills corner to-go spot has an A+ taco game that is consistently good and blows other places out of the water. We know because we keep going back again and again and are yet to be disappointed. To start, the homemade corn tortillas are the perfect texture with a subtle flavor to enhance the tacos without distracting from the meat. Speaking of meat, the carnitas is unreal. The pork melts in your mouth without being too fatty, and the edges are perfectly charred, giving a smoky taste. The runner up is the Al Pastor, which is marinated to perfection, deliciously juicy, and certainly not overcooked. A basic taco rings in at $3 (HOLY FRUGAL!), and adding pico, cilantro, and lime is just an extra $.75. Adding guacamole and cheese is a bit more, and you definitely don't need it. There is a ton of Really good Mexican food in the Neighborhood and this is one of the best spots for flavor and value. I think the carnitas is their best protein option and best eaten as a burrito. I'm partial to their burritos and tortas over tacos but it's all good. You have to get the creamy green salsa, 2 per burrito to complete the order. I've eaten all the things on the menu and would recommend you stay away from the chicken tinga (dry) quesadillas and the tortas de res (tough), cuban (too big to bite) and Hawaiian. These things aren't bad but don't waste your time with them just get the carnitas burrito with black beans and "everything" on it, 2 light green creamy salsa. Finally!!! A quick and delicious taco and burrito spot. The UES is brimming with mediocre taco and burrito spots. The ones that do offer solid flavor tend to break the bank and are more fitting for sit down than grab and go. I knew I was in the right spot when I was inside. All the food looked tasty and the cook was scooping fresh avocado into a to go container. I wanted everything on the menu but decided on the carnitas burrito and steak quesadilla. I have a major gripe with a lot of burrito tortillas -- usually the texture is too thick and gritty. Here, the tortillas are soft, slightly chewy and hug the contents of the burrito so well. Carnitas was flavored well and the size of the burrito makes it so you can get a bit of everything in 1 bite. Steak quesadilla was solid and I love that it came with avocado. My gf loved the fish tacos and shes a picky eater cause she is mostly a vegetarian. Im so happy to have found this place. read more

After a night at the City Museum, we walked towards the 6th train and saw El Aguila at the corner. Slightly hungry, we ventured inside for some authentic Mexican tacos! Some of us ordered 3-4 tacos, others just 1. I ordered the Al Pastor with some Horchata. The Al Pastor came with chopped pieces of pineapples, leaving various flavors of sweet and savory in your moth. The Horchata was really delicious - creamy and cinnamon, just the right amount of sweet. The area is quite spacious with several tables and chairs. Bathrooms are available if needed. I think the horchata here tastes better than the one at los tacos no. 1. The prices are also amazing! We got five tacos, one elote, and a large horchata for only 24 dollars - price is way better than los tacos no 1 as well (which used to be my favorite place).
