Canal Wigwam - Eggs Benedict

Think black-and-white checkered floors, red/chrome chairs and counter stools, a soundtrack of '50s and '60s classics, and waitresses happily singing along while they work. The atmosphere feels welcoming, lived-in, and full of personality. The food is straightforward, affordable, and exactly what you'd hope for from a classic American breakfast. You don't come here for an açaí bowl or an eggs Benedict flight--you come because you're hungry, you want your eggs cooked right, and you know you'll be taken care of. Places like this become community staples for a reason. The service was warm, the energy in the room was contagious, and the whole experience reminded me why diners like this make me so happy. We'll definitely be back, and next time I'm looking forward to trying the lunch menu.

I first tried…read moreCanal Wigwam about a decade ago (I have lived in Canal for 13 years now) and had such a poor experience that I didn't return until today. I thought that I would give it a shot again, but the food was just as disappointing as my first try. The service is great though! Everyone seems to be friendly and kind! We stopped by around 10 AM today (Saturday). Every table was full (so clearly others do like the food/service). My husband and I started off with a cup of coffee while our daughter got a glass of chocolate milk. The coffee was watery and bland (although they have a sign up front about having the world's best coffee). Be prepared to wait a while for your food. It took almost 45 minutes for us to get ours; however, it was understandable considering every table was full! For food, my daughter got the cinnamon roll. She absolutely loved it! She said that it was super soft and ooey-gooey! My husband ordered the steak and eggs. He ordered the steak medium, but it came out very well-done (super chewy). I tried his home fries with his side of bacon and both of those were good! My daughter enjoyed the bacon too! I had the biscuits and gravy and a side of "cheesy" scrambled eggs. A big no to both! The biscuits were undercooked and the gravy just tasted like a large clump of flour! The "cheesy" scrambled eggs were tough scrambled eggs with some shredded cheese sprinkled on the top! While the food was not "it" for me, there are other things that I do enjoy about Canal Wigwam! It's a cute little diner located in the center of our comforting and cozy town! They promote many other local businesses through their "decor" - the dining tables are designed with local businesses flyers/contact information, their coffee mugs promote another local business, etc. Again, I really want to like the food here, but for some reason - my taste buds do not agree!

First time my wife and daughter stopped before our daughter headed overseas for two years in the Peace Corps. Scotty''s is super close and convenient to the airport. Scotty learned of the imminent departure and came with cookies and treats for the long flight! And now this morning it was another airport drop off. It was my turn, dining alone but nothing about a table for one at Scotty's is lonely. The staff are immediately welcoming and every customer is every employee's charge. Four different people helped me or just checked in. The Gina breakfast combos have lots to offer for breakfast. But I was thrilled this 9:30 am to be assured the whole menu was available. I was looking for something less common and was excited to see potato latkes with sour cream and apple sauce as an option. That would have been great but then the waitress (Salome maybe) said, "Do you like corned beef?" The Schmoozer is 3 enormous latkes with thinly shaved and lightly grilled corn beef on top with an over easy egg atop that. Seriously, I can declare victory for finding something I'd never had before. Never would have found it without the nudge. Had to cut myself off with all the coffee offers. Just a great vibe. You rarely see a 4.9 rating and even more rarely that high based on so many reviews. But I understand why - like in so many things in life, it is about the people. And the joy they bring to every conversation. And I will just add, in this age when some would divide us, this dining room is filled with all manner of folks, reveling together over food in fellowship.

We are in the Eastmoor Area, so this was close. We came for breakfast, and we were greeted and seated immediately. Our server was quick to greet us and ask about drinks. We were treated like we were the only ones in the diner. The menu is impressive, with a wide variety of choices for lunch or breakfast. We loved every bite of the meals we ordered. I had the western omelet, home fries, toast, and coffee. My wife had pancakes and tea. The service was fast, and the food was very good. Scotty's has a large menu; you should give them a try.

By the time we walked to the host stand--literally within seconds--we were told we had already lost our spot. They put us back on the waitlist and told us it would be about 20 minutes. After waiting around 25 minutes, we received another text saying our table was ready. Once again, we went straight to the host stand, only to be told there wasn't actually a table available. We asked if we could at least sit at the bar, but since we were a party of four, that wasn't an option. Instead, they added us to the waitlist for a third time and told us to wait another 20 minutes. The most disappointing part was watching more than 10 couples get seated while we continued to be overlooked. It felt like the waitlist system was completely disorganized, and the staff offered no real explanation or solution. After wasting nearly an hour, we decided to leave and have brunch somewhere else. Fortunately, the other restaurant was excellent. Unfortunately, this place turned what should have been a relaxing brunch into a frustrating and disappointing experience.

However, our waitress informed us that a big party was overwhelming the kitchen and we did indeed wait quite a while to get our food. Bread and our smaller items coming out before the mains helped us get through, and luckily we weren't in a hurry to get anywhere. They gave us free desserts- also very tasty. The place is open and relaxing. Light music playing that turned out to be soft covers of 80s and 90s pop songs. The staff as a whole were friendly and professional. Had breakfast a couple of times (free with a stay) and again, excellent service, great food, and a pleasant atmosphere. They had pancakes and bacon both times, I had oatmeal one day (with pretty much any topping you want) and a muffin that was delicious. Next time I had steak and eggs, and wow. I got scrambled even though those aren't usually my pick, figuring a good restaurant would do them better than a diner or than I do at home, and I was right. Fluffy and flavorful. Piled on top of the steak (thick and cooked to my spec) with horseradish sauce. That was milder than I expected, and I did add hot sauce (they brought a couple to the table.) Also home fries, again very good. We had reservations for each visit, but they didn't seem packed, just mostly full. Prices, outside of the comps, are pretty reasonable for the quantity and quality. Parking is a bit of a walk from the building, not an issue on a perfect early fall day but could be in worse weather. We will definitely be back.
