Roasted Chicken for Set 1
Jack M.

Stopped in for the roasted chicken and it did not disappoint. The rice was fragrant and perfectly cooked, each grain holding its texture without being dry. The chicken was incredibly tender, the fat rendered down until it was silky and flavorful. The sauces were outstanding and true to the classic Hainanese style, each one adding a perfect counterpoint to the rich chicken. The ginger scallion soup was a standout, pulling deep aromatic flavors from its vegetable base. At $14.99 for the portion, it felt like a very fair deal, especially in the East Village. Will absolutely be back. The service was friendly and fast. Warm. The space is clean and cozy, while remaining functional.

Having never been to the Elmhurst location, I didn't know what to expect. This hole in the wall location is right near St Marks. The menu only has three food items, chicken rice served three ways: steamed, crispy, and roasted. I went with steamed and crispy to go. The first thing to catch my eye was that they serve it on paper. It really gave an Asia vibe. I was worried it would leak through or become a mess but surprisingly everything was still packed neatly. The rice is flavorful. The chicken was tender and delicious. And even the radish soup was yummy. I just wished they had ginger scallion sauce. I'll definitely visit again.

Went to try their hainanese chicken and it was good!! Got the roasted chicken !' Definitely will go back try their fried chicken

Ant on ice

they were really nice but the thai tea ordered had an ant in it. And I was very scared to even continue drinking it. Just a sanitary precaution this was my first time here.

Here are my top recommendations on what to order: * Ganjajang: Always get this over regular Jajangmyeon. It's cooked dry to order without added water or starch slurry, making it super fresh and packed with rich wok flavor. * Garlic Sauce Shrimp: Their signature garlic sauce is ridiculously flavorful! I don't have a picture of it here, but I've ordered it multiple times. While both the pork and shrimp options are great, I definitely recommend the chili shrimp over the fried pork. It's my absolute favorite. * Oyster Soup (Maesaengi Gulguk): A silky, comforting sea algae broth loaded with plump, juicy oysters. Honestly, it tastes even better than Jjamppong and is easily the best soup I've tried here so far! Authentic, high quality every single time, and the restaurant is spacious with virtually no wait time. Highly recommend checking them out!

For this spot, delicious food, fast and efficient service, and reasonable pricing (though on the higher end) for lunch in the area. Flavorful. I've been here 5 times and will continue to come here. I've gotten their poached chicken over rice, roasted chicken over rice, and mixed (poached/roasted) chicken over rice. All delicious and all reasonably sized and made. You cannot compare this place to Chinatown because let's be honest, the rent in Chinatown and here is vastly different. For what you get here, it's great. I ordered the mixed chicken rice with both roast and steamed chicken. As someone born and raised in Malaysia, I take chicken rice VERY seriously. If there is one meal I could eat every day, or choose as my last meal on earth, it will ALWAYS be CHICKEN RICE! So yes, I have high standards when it comes to this dish! The good news is that a lot of the components were spot on. The rice, soup, bean sprouts, chili sauce, and dark sweet sauce were all around an 8/10 for me. The flavors really brought me back to Malaysia and Singapore, and I genuinely enjoyed every bite. The chicken was a bit more mixed for me. On the positive side, both the roast and steamed chicken were moist and boneless, which I loved. However, both were noticeably on the salty side. My guess is that the chicken may have been brined to help retain moisture, but unfortunately, the saltiness came through more strongly than the natural chicken flavor. I ended up pouring more chili sauce and dark sweet sauce over the chicken to balance things out. Overall, it was still a pleasant experience, and the meal definitely satisfied my chicken rice craving. The price is understandably on the higher side at $20+, especially since you're eating in Midtown. Quick tip if it's your first time: after you finish eating, you can dispose of your bowl and utensils in the closest trash bin and return the tray to the shop. Would I come back? Probably, but mainly if I'm already around Midtown and have an absolutely serious chicken rice craving.

The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable for Midtown Manhattan. Over the two visits, I tried both versions of the Hainanese chicken rice, and both were delicious. The food came out incredibly fast, and I especially appreciated that the meals included Chinese broccoli. I also tried the stir-fried noodles from Hainan Jones and that was excellent. The chicken was very tender, well prepared, and so were the veggies. I think it has stiff competition by way of Lou Yau Kee but is definitely up there as top 5 southeast chicken rices in the city! I would def come back here and what's great is that you can feel healthy bc it's steamed/poached chicken, rice and veggies :) It's inside Urban Hawker, so you can get a variety of other things to go with your meal - might I recommend Kopi (malaysian coffee) at the nearby stand? The flavors were bold, authentic, and the chicken skin was silky smooth. The cucumbers had a nice crunch and the veggies as well. They give you two sauces, one of them is spicy and might be hotter than you expect so try it first.

This spot is a 3-table operation focused entirely on perfecting Thai chicken rice--and they nailed it. The move here: The Chicken: Poached to absolute perfection. Tender, juicy, no fluff. The MVP: The chicken heart. It was so good I had to double down and order a second round. If you know, you know. The Rice: Fragrant ginger rice that actually has flavor, paired with a radish broth that hits the spot. The Sauce Science: They let you mix your own. I went with the soybean paste + ginger-scallion combo. It's addictive. Do not skip the ginger-scallion. Washed it all down with a solid Thai tea to balance the heat. It's a tiny shop with efficient service and zero ego. A total hidden gem. I'll be back. 81-32 Broadway, Elmhurst #ElmhurstEats #QueensFood #KhaoMunKai

Unlike restaurant versions which are often poached and include bones, the Hainanese Chicken Rice sold in these shops exclude the bones, and adds sides of rice and chicken soup. Eim only sells one version of its Chicken Rice -- poached dark meat, while some competitors offer different cuts and fried versions. Ticket times are generally quick as a result. We often just pick up a Set A for 1 (currently for $12.99; $14.14 with tax and by cash), and complement that with dishes from other nearby restaurants -- there are a wealth of excellent options, some even on the same block. The spicy ginger sauce -- the "secret sauce" that distinguishes Eim from its competitors, might be an acquired taste, but it is quite an addicting kick. The spicy ginger sauce also helps mask some overcooking issues. Fans take note that Eim recently began to offer its spicy ginger sauce for sale separately, for $10.89 plus tax for a 12-ounce bottle. Eim keeps to a street food motif with a preparation area that looks like a street cart, and by wrapping take-out orders in butcher's paper. This small shop has seating for about 13 people -- two tables of three, two tables of two, and three counter-height seats. There are no customer accessible restrooms.
