Let me preface this by saying I really wanted to like this place. Because I love all types of Asian cuisine, especially egg rolls. I went in for lunch on a weekday afternoon and the A-frame out front advertised a lunch special that was 2 egg rolls, a side of rice, and a drink for $6.95. A total steal, I thought. Then when you get inside the advertisement changes to $7.95....okay still reasonable but seems like we 'took the bait'? My mom and I both ordered two egg rolls and each got a side of rice. I got a chicken spring roll and a pho roll and she got a shrimp spring roll and a pho roll. Neither of us was a fan of the pho roll - it's 80% the "roll" part, and 20% "filling." The texture of the roll is extremely gummy. I get that that is the consistency of a pho roll but it was almost inedible because it was SO CHEWY like a piece of steak that you just can't break down. My spring roll was pretty good - no complaints. However, my moms shrimp spring roll had TWO pieces of TINY shrimp in it...the rest was just veggies. But here's where the real kicker came in for me: we realized that we didn't get our drink with the lunch special (remember: 2 rolls, side of rice, and a drink is the combo that is advertised) so I went back up to the counter and very politely asked the cashier if it was fine if I just grabbed our drinks from the fridge because we'd forgotten to grab them earlier when we paid. Mind you, they only have bottled drinks for sale so if you only want water, you have to buy a bottle as they have no sort of water dispenser or water cups. I digress - She then tried to tell me that we didn't order the lunch combo...I said "we both got 2 rolls and a side of rice...." which is literally the lunch combo. She explained that the lunch special is only for two of THE SAME rolls, i.e., if I had ordered both of our spring rolls and my mom had ordered both of our pho rolls, we would have "qualified" for the lunch special. I explained to her that either way, we PAID TOGETHER ON THE SAME TICKET, so why does it matter if I ordered 1 of each and my mom ordered 1 of each - no matter which way you spin it we both got TWO ROLLS AND A SIDE OF RICE. She went to the back and 'asked her manager' (not sure if she really did) for his opinion on the matter and came back with the same answer - no. If she did actually go in the back and explain it to her manager, I want to know what kind of manager doesn't come out from hiding to speak to the customer themselves....? You may be reading this and thinking 'ok get over it, it's just a drink.' And you are exactly right. But it's not about the drink at this point, it's about the principle. Neither of us threw a fit about it in the store because it's not worth it - her answer was no, we weren't entitled to a drink because we "didn't order the lunch special" and that was that. Had she, or her manager, seen the logic behind what I was saying and realized that we did in fact ORDER THE LUNCH SPECIAL, they would have agreed that our meal came with a drink. However, they chose to stand their ground and lose customers. Like I said, my spring roll was not bad at all and had this whole drink situation not happened, I would have definitely given this place another shot at redemption and just ordered different things on the menu to find what I like. BUT I can't support a place that does shady business - from the false advertising out front that says the lunch special is $6.95 and then you walk inside and it magically goes up in price...to the teeny tiny non-existent fine print that explains the rule that 'you must order two of THE SAME rolls to qualify for the lunch special even if you are paying together.' Would not recommend and won't be back. read more
