A culinary OG on College Avenue. Hunan 1 always delivers well seasoned, generously portioned, and bargain priced meals for the entire family. Their General Tso chicken is the stuff of legend for the Fox Valley community and generations of Lawrence University students. Service is always friendly and efficient. Tables always clean and freshly bused. read more

Hunan 1 - General Tso - classic - Chinese Near Me - Appleton, Wisconsin

Terrible food. Chicken tastes old and smells burnt. Sauces are bland, and store owner cares nothing about customer satisfaction with questionable attitude. Avoid. read more

This place has been a fixture throughout my childhood into my adult years. It's no frills cheap Chinese food. You get a hot meal at a great price. If you looking for something mind blowing this isn't your place but if you're looking for something quick and cheap this is it. read more

I looked all over for several years for a good Chinese takeout spot in the Fox Valley. After 6 years I found it. Service is fast, and food is always hot. My favorites are the Hot &Spicy (chicken or shrimp) from the Szechuan style part of menu. The Mei Fun is good and so is the General Tso's chicken. read more

Hunan 1 was a staple when I was in college (it was cheap and right across the street from where I lived), and I continued to frequent there when I'm back in town. It's inexpensive Chinese food, and while it may not be the best Chinese you'll ever get, it's certainly well worth the price in my opinion. They have a special discount menu for Lawrence University students, which is a huge bonus, and they deliver as well (pretty good delivery range too, I used to live up off of Ballard and 441 and they'd deliver all the way up there, lickety-split!). The food, as I mentioned, while not outstanding has always been consistently good and the portions are pretty big (I always get at least two meals out of it, if not three, which makes them even more economical). The atmosphere inside is a little on the dingy/worn side. It's not really dirty, per se, there's just not a lot going on. I've stayed there to eat a couple times, but usually I have it delivered or am taking it elsewhere. Overall, a solid, economical option for Chinese, and one I continue to go back to because I know what to expect. read more

As we live in NYC, we believe we have been exposed to some very good Chinese food. Last week, we only ordered hot & sour soup, but it was some of the best we have ever had. No pork or wood ear fungus, but it had fresh mushrooms. If/ when we return to Appleton we look forward to trying more items. read more

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE Went here one day in search of a new place for some good Chinese and no matter what anyone says the do a great job! Very good bang for your buck too! Myself and wife can spend 20$ and eat almost 3 full meals from leftovers! read more

Hunan 1 offers good tasting food for a quick delivery. We have been ordering from them multiple times a month for years now. I am not giving 5 stars as I have noticed their egg rolls have lost their quality and they recently changed their take out containers to a cheap black plastic. Big fan that they have an online coupon that you can mention for free crab rangoons with qualifying order! read more

Definitely not the best choice for Chinese food in the Fox cities, would highly recommend looking at other places and not wasting time or money on hunan 1. My wife and I both got sick from the sesame chick, which also didn't taste right. Rice was under cooked and partially raw/crunchy. Extremely low quality. read more

this last order was garbage . hunan chicken ? chicken with broccoli and watered down sauce , egg rolls ? now mini egg rolls with zero flavor .. the fortune cookies even tasted stale . general chicken was like frozen food heated up....nothing was at the quality i've seen before. Not sure i will eat hear ever again . read more

After spending 21/2 hours looking for a Chinese restaurant I decided to give Hunan's a try. I'm so happy I did. The food arrived quickly, hot it was delicious and plentiful. We will be eating leftovers. I'm very critical and have food allergies. I did not need my epipen and I give a 5 star review. Excellent cuisine! Thank you read more

Hey this is a Chinese take out restaurant and the value is great for their food. Just don't ask for more. Lunch special is good. Better value than PF Chang. Taste the same but one charge three time more. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is great. There is an overwhelming amount on the menu but everything I've tried is so flavorful and delicious. read more

Chicken was disgusting. General Tsos chicken was unable to chew. You get what you pay for! Rammen is way better.

Some of these other reviews say that this is your classic mediocre Chinese food and you get what you expect/pay for, etc. However, I was really not at all impressed with this food, even on the "so bad yet so good greasy Chinese food" craving scale. I came here and ate with a couple friends. The service was fine, although we felt sort of awkward for eating in there. There was no one else there and the employees were acting kind of weird around us, almost like they wanted to talk but couldn't because they had customers eating there. They were pretty friendly to us, though. The rice was way too dry and I could only get through a fourth of my fried rice before calling it quits. I hate wasting food, but I decided not to get my remaining food to go. I will definitely not be returning here. I'm more than happy to get Taste of Thai across the street instead! read more

My husband always calls in an order for pick up when he's on his way from work. I decided to give them a call and place and order for delivery and I now order my Chinese from from here. We both ordered an order of kung pao chicken and a side of crab meat cream cheese ragoons. I had 4 coupons and decided to use one. Here are my pros and cons. Pro's: *Coupons are sent in the mail *They answer the phone fast *Delicious food *Good customer service *The food arrives within 30 minutes *Delivery charge is included with your order Con's: *Must be a 15$ order or more for delivery *Two numbers on the coupon. One doesn't work All in all, I was satisfied with the food and customer service. read more

This place is disgusting... Doesn't even smell edible. I ordered delivery and the delivery was fast, but that's the only good thing I can say about this place. The hot and sour soup was spoiled and tasted like nothing I've ever had in a very bad way lol. You've been warned. read more

I eat quite a bit of Chinese food and it took awhile before I went to Hunan. The restaurant is not the cleanest, so I was always a little worried about trying it out. Some friends of mine wanted to meet there for lunch. Lunch for 3 people totalled $14.00, that pretty much sold me! I live downtown near Lawrence University and I eat Hunan at least once a week. We usually order take out and get about 4 dishes, soup, and an appetizer for under $30. The food is now my favorite compared to Dong Po and Confucious. You also end up getting more food (since its cheaper) which is a nice bonus! read more

Been ordering here for awhile and each order have always tasted great. It takes going to another Chinese restaurant to appreciate this place. More side options available than other places. Delivery drivers are nice and polite. Love their general tso's chicken versus dong po, lo-mien is a hit or miss, crab Rangoon could be done better but for the price its great. Love using their website to order my food, bring it back up! read more

This is my favorite place to order from. The lo mein has a "smoky" flavor that I haven't had anywhere else. I like that you can order online and set a specific time to be delivered. Great amount of food for the price. Now, let's remember that this is your typical low-cost hole-in-the-wall Chinese place. Nothing fancy, you get what you pay for. But I'd order from here 100 times before even trying a new place. I've found what I like and I'm sticking to it! You can eat there; there's a few tables. It's a little awkward, but what do I care? :) read more

Truly terrible customer service. I could not tell you if the food is good or not because I did not ever get the chance to order. And I tried more than once. I waited at the counter to place an order for several minutes and was ignored by the cashier while she called out orders being picked up. She did not acknowledge my presence directly in front of her even once. Then, another employee came up behind her and began taking orders from people standing in line behind me. I went home and tried to place an order on the phone, but there is a $15 minimum. The employee (assuming it was the same woman who ignored me) was exceedingly short with me over the phone and when I tried to explain my disappointment earlier and asked for help, she hung up on me. The only thing positive I could say is that it's cheap, because I couldn't find enough appetizer type items to bring my bill above $15 and make it worth it. I have not been treated so poorly in a long while. This is clearly a place that does not value your business. NYC Chinese takeout employees are more polite than this! read more

We love this place. We order a few times a month. Customer service is great, food is consistently good, delivery is super-fast, and the prices are great. My husband always has garlic chicken and I order off the special diet menu. My two year old likes the chicken and broccoli and that's saying a lot. Definitely recommend. read more

For standard Chinese delivery, Hunan is our go-to. The food is reliably good, the delivery (or take-out, for that matter) is lightening fast and the prices are unbeatable. Be prepared with your order if you call- or better yet, order it online! read more

It's greasy crappy American Chinese food but perfect if you're craving exactly that kind of fare. What your typical mediocre Chinese food is, that's Hunan 1. On the other hand it's predictable, filling and delicious. It could be worse. I recommmend the General Tso's chicken. read more

Decent American-Chinese. Did not see a Chinese menu. Not sure if there is a place in Appleton that has a Chinese menu available.

The lunch prices here can't be beat, a little over 5 dollars for a good sized portion. If you are looking for high quality Chinese food you may want to go else where. The service here is always fast and good. read more

Their lemon chicken and crab rangoons are two of my favourites! I typically order for delivery and they are always prompt and polite. Would reccomend to anyone looking for inexpensive but tasty chinese food in Appleton read more

Stopped here tonight for dinner with our son, a Lawrence University student. Had garlic chicken and General Tso's chicken. Both were tasty, hot and fresh. The restaurant itself has ample seating and it is clean and fresh looking compared with other small Chinese places. They were very busy but our food came in a reasonable amount of time. They have a special menu for Lawrence students. read more

I usually hunan 1 when craving for chinese at home and had always had good delivery service. Just the other day, i placed an online order for delivery and it took them over an hour. I called and the lady who picked up put me on hold, note that she was on the phone with another customer who was placing an order over the phone. After that order, she took another customers order so i decided to hang up and call back. Just then she finally talks to me and ells me food should be here in 5-10 min. As i was eating the chicken & broccoli, i happened to come across a little piece of plastic. YUCK!! Probably won't be ordering from them no more. I also ordered the shrimp eggroll... BIG disappointment!! After eating one of them i decided to open one up due to not getting any shrimp and i found out that the cut ONE LITTLE sized shrimp in half and that's what they called "shrimp eggroll" read more

It took me 35min just to place an order cause everytime someone answered the phone after every 3-4 times I had to call to get someone to answer, they should just hang up. Once I got through she was so quick to get me off the phone, she hung up on me before she told me how long it was going to be. Tried calling back 4 times and no answer at all. Very disappointed. Will not order from here again. I should not have to work that hard to order. Only wanted to order from there due to a coupon I had otherwise I should have given up right away. read more

I ordered delivery service for my family tonight. This was the the second time since I moved to Appleton that I ordered from Hunan I. First time it was great delivery of 30 minutes! Tonight it took two and a half hours before food was delivered!!! Yes.. Two and a half hours!!!! I called back twice to inquire and each time they said that they had "stacks" of orders and that my order was out on delivery! This is was a January 1st delivery request! I wished they would have been been honest and let me know how busy they were! I would have gone down to pick the order up instead of delivery! Good that food was finally delivered but crab ran goons were cold and rest of food was Luke warm! I would not recommend delivery on busy night! read more

Food was very fast ,good portions ,I don't speak the same language which I guess is Cantonese.Nevermind that good service and food is decent will definitely try again. read more

Always love the Wonton Soup and Chicken w/ Broccoli. Great on a cold day... nom nom nom :)

This place is great if you don't have much money and want alot of food. The food here is just OK, there is no way I would go out of my way to eat here. The workers here are not very friendly and just want to get you in and out. read more

This is a great restaurant with great food, much of which is extremely inexpensive. I would highly recommend.

Quick, good prices, and pretty tasty. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, and they deliver to what seems to be a wide area. I would recommend Hunan 1 if you want decent Chinese fare quickly. read more

Ordered delivery on Jan 1. Knowing that it may take a little longer because of the busy day I was pleasantly surprised when our food arrived in about 40 minutes. The food was just as a lot of other stated, greasy American Chinese food that everyone craves at one point or another. It was just what we wanted for a easy dinner. The chicken and broccoli could have used a little more flavor but with enough soy sauce it was just fine. The crab rangoons were great as usual. Everything else was good enough, nothing fancy but worth ordering again. read more

So who has gotten food from Hunan1 in College Ave recently? When I worked downtown years ago I got lunch from there all the time. I went there yesterday for take out lunch. Ordered the Cashew chicken and it was so burnt I couldn't eat it. It was already past my lunch break so didn't eat. I called them a little later and told them what happened and instead of giving me a credit or my expected refund, they told me I had to bring the food back in order to prove it. I hadn't eaten any of it, so I said when I had a chance I would. I brought their food back the next day and they didn't even open the container...it looked burnt. I wanted a full refund for two lunches, but they told me since the other was eaten they would only refund for the burnt one. It wasn't about the $5. They inconvenienced me for no lunch AND then to bring the BURNT food back. I wanted a FULL refund. Since the other lunch container was empty...no refund on that one. I finally said "OK" give me $5. They were going to write me a CHECK. I said NO. Finally they gave me $5.25 back. ANY other restaurant would have SENT compensation or a credit to be used later.. I didn't want credit for any more of their food. DON'T EAT AT THIS PLACE...THERE BUSINESS PRACTICES SUCK. WRONG JUST WRONG!!! read more

I recently ordered lunch from Hunan 1. The delivery took a good 50 minutes to arrive. The rice was very dry and the meal was not warm (needed to be heated in the microwave). The cost was very fair, but I don't think I will be eating from there again. read more

I have been eating here for 20 years. I have eaten at 100's of Chinese restaurants, both eat in and delivery, they are by far the best. The Happy Family is the best at a great price. Great family owned business. read more
