I'm visiting the Bay Area and staying in a hotel with zero water pressure. I can't rinse the shampoo from my thick head of hear, so I'm search of a wash and blow dry, I came across Edward's Salon. Initially I called to make an appointment, and of the many salons I called, they were by far the friendliest. After stalking their website, I was able to get an appointment. Sharon was the stylist that helped me/did my shampoo and dry. She is Awesome! Seriously the most genuinely nice person, and extremely talented! The entire experience was exactly what I needed. She was also fun to talk to, and I walked out with a beautiful blow dry. I'll definitely be back. Love the friendly vibe and the stylists have been there for years so that says something. Been here 22 years had counting also must mean something. Open and airy it doesn't feel toxic to sit and get your hair did. A bit pricey but worth it. They have great product too, including the Atomik mini travel blower too cute. This is an update per my last review about the bad-blowout. Edward himself reached out to me to see if we could restart my experience at my salon. I agreed to go in for a cut, as well as schedule a cut for my daughter (with another stylist). Katie was an absolute gem to my daughter. She wanted a big cut and Katie was so kind and supportive in making my girl feel special. We were extremely pleased with the results and now my 12 year old looks so much older (sniff sniff). As for my session, Edward was absolutely lovely. He has obviously been in the business for a really long time, and I loved how gracefully he advised me what to do with my hair. He was able to cut off length while still allowing me to have volume. Overall, Edward's customer service was above and beyond. I can't remember the last time someone wanted to make things right the way Edward did. For that, I applaud you. Bomb blowout and the haircut ( with the help of her master stylist Jaime), let me tell you....the best I've had in a very long time! With how they teach their students and how the master stylist really watched what the students were doing and helped teach them was impressive to see. I am a huge fan of Edward's, specifically Jason, who has given me some very cool cuts and broken me out of my long, straight hair phase that had lasted for ...oh... about 15 years. Poor guy, every time I come back, I've cut my own bangs and he gives me this look like why are you doing this to yourself? I feel great when I leave this salon. My cut usually costs around $85 but it's always a cut that looks good for the next 2 months as it grows out. (or 5 months...which is where I'm at right now) The staff is very nice, not stuffy at all like you find at a lot of salons, and Edward --the owner, duh -- is a great guy. ***UPDATE*** My last cut cost $110. Literally just for a cut. No color, highlights, weave, crazy styling or braids. Just a cut. It took him 20 minutes and I was out a chunk of my rent. See that line? I've had dirty blonde, almond-gold LONG hair since I was 15. I recently decided to go dark red (crazy, I know), and David Bui was the stylist I chose to transform me entirely from what I've known for the majority of my life. Any stylist who can put up with me and deliver results gets major points in my book - because I am admittedly extremely neurotic, picky and I have high expectations when I put my trust in their hands and let them take the reigns. Bui is extremely patient and LISTENS to exactly what you want, in addition to having great skills in color and cut. He transformed me into the Red bombshell that I am now and while I am still getting adjusted to this new shade, I know I'll be a client of his for a long time to come no matter what color I decide to go with next. I have fine long hair and had asked for soft/beachy waves. After sleeping in a messy bun the night of my treatment, the next day my hair still held the waves and smelled great. Seeing that there are only women making posts about Edward's Salon, I was compelled as a MALE to write one and represent! I enjoy going to Edward's Salon for my cut! I enjoy all the stylists on down to the friendly receptionists. I love the atmosphere and the professionalism I get from going to Edward's. Most importantly though, I ENJOY MY CUT. I have a lot of hair for a guy and I trust any of the stylists at Edward's to cut my hair because I know I'll get a great cut and because they are all fully trained because of their extra training program there. But to be specific, I go to David for my cut and I enjoy how he takes his time on my hair. Go to Edward's...period. I live in Novato and it worth the drive. I was skeptical at first and also worried, as every time I go to a new salon, it's a risk. After reading the reviews here, I thought I'd give Edward's a shot. I was a little early, but I snared the last homemade macadamia nut cookie and read a few magazines while I waited. Yum! David was awesome!! He spent a good hour and a half on my hair and it was time well spent. Plus he even waxed my brows in the chair (!!) after my haircut. The brows looked great, although the process of leaning back in the chair is a little hard on the neck. That night, I went to a party and got so many compliments. One friend took pictures of the cut for her stylist to copy... Update 7/23/08: I feel like I need to come clean, folks. After my first fanastic visit, I went back to the salon twice more before not returning. Why? Well, it's a mixed bag. The second time I went to David, he seemed to forget who I was and could not recreate the magic of that first time. Also, he insisted that I grow out my bangs even though I have never really looked good with no bangs. I have a big forehead and honestly believe that I look a little better with a bit of coverage. Trusting his vision, I went with it and suffered through six weeks of hating my hair as it was growing out with hopes that the third visit would be the charm and I could see the vision that he was seeing. I have been following Jessica J since she was in cosmetology school. She is the only person I let near my hair now! I've been going to Edwards for over 3 years, but sadly realized that I just had reached my saturation point. The appointments are long, far too long IMO. When I asked for a long layered hair style, I was told they don't do that there. I had to have a blunt cut. I wasn't happy about that, but I had heard so much praise about them I decided to go ahead. I figured I could always have layers added later elsewhere if I didn't like it ... which is exactly what I ended up doing. The hair colorist did an exceptional job of color matching and highlight blending, but the cost was very very high, and I mentioned that it's a long appt, right? Yeah, 3+ hours is a long time for just color and highlights by someone who's supposed to be top drawer based on their charges. I read the previous review of the bride updo fiasco and have to say I've no doubt that is an accurate portrayal, as I had the exact same kind of experience when asking for an updo in the salon. $100, 1.5 hours, 1/2 can of spray, 25+ bobby pins yielded me the exact same bun I do all the time with no spray and 4 pins. Seriously. I could have done this myself and saved a lot of time, $$, and frustration. My hair was so HARD that I went home and washed it, put it up wet into my usual bun, and left for my event with a wet head. Geez. The last straw was when I showed up for a trim appt, was in the changing room, and unbeknownst to her, overheard my stylist saying to her previous client who was still unfinished, "I'm just going to trim her bangs and then will come back." I had booked a full trim appt, not a bang trim. I would never have made that kind of appt because I can't take off work for short appts in the middle of the day. I let her know that I was expecting a full trim, but she actually tried to argue with me that no, it was a bang trim. Well, seeing as how we were attempting to grow out my bangs, that makes no sense at all. She offered to reschedule the appt, but I declined. I've never gone back, and never will. read more

Fist off, love that I can book online. I've been going there for 3 years now. 2) Roxanne is super sweet and really gets what looks good on you. She's a great colorist, great at cutting and can do a hell of a blow out. 3) Its a bit pricey yes... but to me its a 6 week investment in my sanity. I have a weird challenge in finding a stylist: I want extensions. To be specific, I want natural hair (not synthetic), brightly colored extensions. And I want them for the color, not for length or thickness. So finding a stylist? I was driving to the City, which meant losing my entire Saturday to driving, parking, walking past hobos (south of Market, yo), spending three hours and then driving back. And it was synthetic hair. Same in the East Bay. Great, funky salons but synthetic + the drive + the parking. In Marin? .. Not so much of anything. The salons "do" extensions but they don't "do" bright colors. Or they don't do extensions at all. Or they do extensions and they're great at it, but they can't think outside that "extension are for length and thickness" box and give me a decent, funky cut! Man, have I called around. A neighbor said she had heard Edwards did extensions so I made a consult appointment and met Emily a few weeks ago. I was there five minutes and I could tell that she already understood what I was asking for. We talked about color and styles and I made an appointment. I got my hair "done did" today. Emily took even more time to ask a number of questions about how I wear my hair, how I style it, etc. but she also asked me about asymmetrical versus even, chunky versus flippy, etc. I could see the gears churning. Two and a half hours later I walked out with a fabulous, cute cut *and* streaks of fire in my hair - red below, orange and then yellow on top. She simply Got it. The price? Yes, it's pricey. Extensions are pricey. I know what to expect for color, a cut and extensions. But for the extra two hours of my life that I saved driving back and forth to the City, Edwards was a deal. I've been seeing Cathy Nguyen for a few years now. Without question, she is the best stylist I have ever had. When I first came to her, I had been dying my hair myself (drug store boxes) out of exasperation with my previous stylist, so needless to say, my hair was really damaged and in need of a lot of HELP! She gradually nursed it to back to health worked me into a more stylish cut. I'm naturally a very dark blonde. The highlights are so natural, I can go 9 weeks between appointments! And she is always very careful to use the same strands each time, so as to not make my hair all washed out after a few months, and to keep the rest of my hair healthier. I know those of you that get highlights know the problem I'm describing. I've had that problem with other stylists- never with Cathy. The products she recommended (mostly Kerastase) really worked to nurture my hair back in to shape. And I like the fact that she does not pressure at all the with products sales AND the salon's return policy is great- basically you can return anything for any reason- which is really nice when you are investing a lot of money in new products and now sure if they will work. I don't think I would have had the guts to try all the products that I bought initially without that return policy. Now that I know they all work, I CAN'T live without them and I want to buy them for all my friends and family members!! But this is perhaps the biggest testament of all. Despite the relatively high cost of treatments (normal these days), even my husband INSISTS I continue to see her. 'Your hair looks a thousand times better than before you started seeing her" he told me. "It's NEVER looked so good, there's no way you could EVER stop seeing her! It doesn't matter what it costs!" Now, for my husband to say that about ANYTHING is a miracle. So, there you have it- if you are looking for a new stylist- see Cathy. read more
