I recently moved here and I've been looking for somewhere to get a hair cut for a couple months and I was looking at places that were close to where I live and good price. I came across Plum Salon and decided to make an appointment. I got there and my first thought was cute salon! Kai was my hair stylist and I was the last person for the day. There were still a couple people there, which was ok. The vibe I got from those few people there were friendly and nice. It didn't feel too crazy or stressful. The last place I went to there were like 15 different people getting their hair cut and it felt super busy and chaotic in there. I liked that Plum Salon didn't have that feeling. Anyways, I got a haircut and highlights the day I went. She started to ask me questions as to what I'm looking for with hair cut. I liked that she asked me more questions that I haven't been asked before so she can get it right. The previous person I went to in San Mateo asked me what I wanted but didn't listen to me. I'm glad she asked and talked a lot more about it my hair cut and highlights. During the whole session, she was so easy to talk to. It was a good time. I'm there for awhile and want to make sure I get along with the stylist and they understand me instead of pretending. That's what I felt yesterday, it was so easy to talk and be comfortable. At the end of the session, she asked how I want my hair to be styled and I told her I wasn't going anywhere afterwards, only home so she said ok, let's do a simple curl and that's what she did and my hair still look great! Nothing too extravagant or crazy. I mentioned how the other person in San Mateo asked me the same question and I said he didn't need to shampoo, condition and style because I was going to the gym right after and what did the stylist do.... Shampoo, condition and style my hair... I'm glad she asked me more than once about how I wanted to style my hair. Actually, she asked me more than once about highlights and hair cut which I like! Just do not use Susan. She is very inexperienced and provided a horrible client experience. I did not even let her do my hair after our consultation. She criticized me several times and told me she didn't know how to do what I wanted. Her colleagues explained how but she still wouldn't do it. She said she only knew how to bleach. My own long time, very professional hair dresser in NYC set me up with another very qualified salon nearby to finish what needed to be done when Susan simply doesn't know how. Very disappointing. Before my appointment, a colleague of mine told me she had to stop using Susan because she kept over bleaching her hair. Cute salon. Terrible experience. I'm new to the area and I made an appointment at this salon based on the reviews and the fact that it is an Aveda salon. Also, the price was right. I came in for a trim and mentioned to the stylist that I did NOT want any major changes because my wedding is in a month. I wanted the split ends trimmed off only. The stylist apparently does not understand curly hair and proceeded to cut in layers that make my hair appear 2-3 inches shorter than what it is. It's challenging to manage now because of all the volume that I didn't need. The salon is beautiful and has a serene and unique back patio/waiting area. The stylist was quite friendly and she performed a relaxing scalp massage that was awesome. I wish that I could chance it and give the salon another try, but the cut was too disappointing. read more

My mom and I have been getting our hair cut here for a while and they've always done a great job. A couple days ago, I received a terrible and very pricey highlight job from another local salon. The salon offered a "color correction" but said "color correction" ultimately made my roots a weird brassy-orange/rose gold- not the blonde I had initially requested. I was distraught and, as I live a few minutes away and had already called practically every salon in Marin to see if they could do a color correction that day to no avail, decided to walk into Plum and ask if there was any chance they could get me in. I walked in (visibly distraught, embarrassingly enough) where I met Kasey, who was dealing with her last client of the day. Even though she wasn't working the next day, she said she would be able to see me at 10 AM for a color correction. Thanks to her kindness, my week was saved and my hair fiasco was resolved- and now my hair looks even better than before! Thank you so much to Kasey and Plum! They are truly life savers. read more

My Plum experience was yummy in every way. From the first call I made to make my appointment to the zillion compliments I have gotten since I walked out their door. Emily, new to Plum, gave me a cut and color so rich and sassy my friends were awe struck. People couldn't resist touching my deep and luscious locks. And because Plum is an Aveda salon, my hair smelled amazing too. Actually the whole place relaxes you in all those, well, yummy scents of Aveda. Emily is sweet, easy-going, down-to-earth and very, very talented. Though she is new to Plum she is not new to the craft so make no mistake, she's a master in the making. After researching vigorously on Yelp for an outstanding hairdresser, I'm so glad and relieved that I found Laura at Plum. I recently decided to chop my hair off and was disappointingly done by someone else. I completely disliked my haircut, considering I asked for a bob cut and ended up with something else. I thought I would grow to like it but just hated it every time I see it. Hence, to Laura I went and she fixed it completely! I now love my short hair and will definitely return to her for future cuts. The salon is well maintained with a modern look. Head massages before a haircut is such a plus! I just saw Laura at Plum Salon for a totally new 'do. I was so afraid to get a short haircut, but the Plum experience was relaxing and the result is beautiful. Laura is more than I could hope for in a stylist. Not only does my hair look downright GORGEOUS after she has worked her magic, I also have a great time while in Laura's chair. I am at the salon every four weeks and these cut and color appointments span several hours. In that time, you can really get a feel for the atmosphere of a salon and the stylists. I have been going to Plum for about a year now but I think it takes time to really feel out a salon. I had been looking a place for about 8 months after my previous stylist - well, let's just say it was too much trouble. I had tried a few different places with varied results until I really got my hair screwed up by another salon in El Cerrito. Lynsie helped my baby fine hair get back to normal (it took a few appointments so my hair could grow out) with a beautiful color. I am growing it out after years of really short hair and she is able to make it look really great every time with the changes in length. I have to thumbs up my girl Laura now that she's at Plum. I followed her as soon as I found out that she moved from Shylocks to Plum. Plum is way more inviting and relaxing than Shylocks any day. The ladies are all great and they even let me bring in my crazy dog. Even as I was waiting for my color to process, I hung out on the patio out back in their little comfy lounge. Great place! Now let's talk about Laura. She's been my go-to hair stylist for almost 4 years now (I think). She's fantastic with the short pixie cut (though she can give you any style, don't get me wrong) and like a good stylist should, she gave me crap (good crap) about bleaching my hair myself when I shouldn't have. They have wine and food (because I'm always hungry and love to drink!) They have recycled framed mirrors (super green & Marin!) I have been wanting to write this review since Lynsie opened up Plum Salon but just haven't had a chance. I have been going to Lynsie for three years now and have followed her from other salons here. She is AMAZING! After getting my hair highlighted in London and NYC, I didn't know that the best colorist for my blonde hair would be here in Marin. Lynsie is supremely talented whether you want to go more natural or even a more drastic change in color. She will listen to what you want and make you look fabulous every time. When I first started going to Lynsie, my hair was so damaged after a stylist in NY did a keratin treatment on it and fried my ends. With Lynsie's help and guidance, my hair is now healthy looking again. She knew which products would help restore my hair's strength and shine and gave me great advice. Not only is Lynsie gifted in the art of hair color, she is also the sweetest person and just a joy to spend time with. She is very professional as well and manages her salon extremely well. The salon is very light, airy and relaxing. It's a great place to unwind with some pampering and a cup of Aveda tea. I get compliments on my hair all the time and people always think my color is natural, which is the biggest praise someone could give. I highly recommend Plum Salon. Horrible experience. I will never recommend anyone to go there. What horrible energy. The lady who runs the place was rude and basically a liar. After calling to make an appointment and sending over images of what I wanted and a photo of my current hair, I discussed pricing and then they made an appointment. When I got there the girl who was supposed to do mg hair was obviously a novice. The senior lady came over and immediately attempted to double the price and said that was the minimum and that my hair would be a color correction. They totally tried to jack up the price snd the lady was just flat out rude. I would never want anyone like that to touch my crown chakra or touch my hair. The place was empty, I obviously know why, with that kind of crappy energy who would want to go there. Save your self the trip. I wasted my gas on this nonsense and my peace of mind. BAD BAD PEOPLE!! Not sure what chemicals have seemed into this last reviewers scalp but ive been getting my hair done by susan for years..so i know she has at least 8 years because shes been doing mine that long. I also know shes very skilled because I'm not one to find something that works and maintains the same look for decades, long past its fashion expiration date. I change it up. Last month i went with a baliage- something ive heard is quite complicated. No bleach was involved, my ends are the exact color of blonde i wanted, and im still getting compliments. Had my first color experience at Plum Salon with McKenzie and am very pleased with the results. The salon itself is very inviting, clean and even has a small outdoor area perfect for relaxing while processing on a nice day. McKenzie asked lots of questions before coloring my hair, making me feel very comfortable with her approach and technique. After having a couple of not so great salon experiences in the area, I was a little nervous but she put me right at ease. She's super approachable, friendly and accommodating with her hours. So happy to have found Mackenzie. After moving just over a year ago and trying four different new hairdressers I am finally happy with my hair. I have very thick hair that is difficult and time consuming to get right. No one else has wanted to put the time it takes in even though I explain that I need a long appointment. I went to Plum Salon for the first time and had my hair done Susan Oller. The Salon is super cute, clean and has a great relaxing atmosphere. All the staff are friendly and inviting. I got a partial highlight and cut and I am IN LOVE with my hair! My color is spot on the perfect sun kissed caramel and my cut is just the right length and I love how my layers fall. I've gotten more compliments on my hair in the last couple of days than I can count! Susan really took the time to listen and gave me exactly what I what I wanted, expectations beyond exceeded. her prices are totally reasonable and her timing was efficient, right in line with what I was quoted. So, it wasn't bad, but having read the other Yelp reviews before I went I was left feeling somewhat disappointed, as though I wasn't 'in the club' because clearly others have had a far better experience than I did. On the positive side, I had no problem getting a last minute appointment with Emily, and no trouble parking outside. Emily greeted me and was friendly from the start, but we said very little to each other throughout my appointment. The products she used on my hair smelt lovely and the basin where she washed my hair was more comfortable than most, and yes, the decor is nice (my glass of water was served in a 'trendy' jam jar!). But the entire experience lasted 20mins and there was no love or passion, no advice to wow me with, and certainly no food or wine (as others said there were!) on this particular Saturday afternoon. Reading the other reviews I see words/phrases like "fabulous", "amazing", "wonderful" and "great experience" in many of them, but none of those describe what I had, so I left feeling rather disappointed and $70 out of pocket. Lynsie is a fantastic stylist. She gives the most precision cut that I have ever encountered. Her attention to detail is exceptional. She is great with continuing a color or cut that you love, as well as suggesting things that would look great. She is also a wiz at color correction; I went to her many years ago with a horrendous color mishap and she fixed me right up (yes it took hours but she was in it until it was right!). My daughter is also lucky enough to have Lynsie do her hair; she gives her great cuts and makes her feel very comfortable. We even had a few semi permanent lavender and teal sections put in for the start of school this year and my daughter was on cloud 9 (yes I've created a monster, but as long as we have Lyns, I'm willing to keep my kid happy and creating a sense of her own style!) I didn't have high hopes of ever finding anyone I liked as much but walked out of my first appointment with Mackenzie loving my hair more than I had in years!
