Eds is a tiny 1950's American style diner with all the charm of 'Happy Days'. I go there for the novelty of all things rock 'n' roll and a proper hotdog with sweet fried onions. If you sit on a stool at the counter you're within reach of the mini jukeboxes and for a mere 20p you can listen to the likes of Buddy Holly and Smokey Robinson. It's not all novelty though as the food is just as great as the decor. My friends rave about the Malt Shakes in flavours like peanut butter, mint choc and coffee and banana, apparently they taste, "just like a box of malteasers melted into ice cream" which as tempting as it sounds, I haven't tried as they look more like a heart attack in a glass to me. It's a great place to come for a quick snack during the day with a couple of friends (It's not great for groups as it's so small). Like Rachel J, I am quite partial to the peanut butter shakes (although not quite as great as the Reece's shake at FatBurger or the PB&Choc shake at Pot Belly) but on my latest visit I deviated from the plan and ordered their new shake. Against my better judgement I let my friend talk me into eating here. To my defence it was one of those sad, raining, dreary and cold London days and everywhere else nearby was FULL. We grabbed a stool around the bar and I ordered the Smoky Joe's, chilli cheese fries and one of their famous root beer ice cream floats. My friend had the Ed's fried chicken burger with onion rings and a Pepsi max cherry ice cream float. The fries were terrible. The cheese was plastic-like. All ingredients seemed to be of very poor quality which for the price is unacceptable. Ed's Easy Diner is a really cool place to go to if you are in Soho. Just by having a 50's theme, it definitely runs the risk of being tacky and cheap. The good thing is that it is not cheap and tacky, and is more authentic than a lot of similar places I have been to. The best thing about it is that it serves the kind of food that you really crave sometimes, and can often be hard to find. The burgers are really satisfying after having a couple of beers. It is probably not a place to go out for diner, but it is a place that you would be happy to stumble across, or remember when you are in the area. I very much enjoyed my coney with cheese added. Super tasty and giant portion. I got the cheese sauce, which I really liked. Maybe it's just a nod to the cheese sauce I grew up eating; it was delicious and gooey. Ed's does several hilarious American things that I found to be really endearing. Like diner-style coffee. In the US, you won't find mid-grade restaurants or diners with fancy espresso machines. So the bottomless diner coffee was adorable and so fun. Same thing with bottomless sodas, and I liked that Ed's had fountain soda! Overall, the food was good for diner style food. I would give this place 2 or 3 stars if it were located anywhere in the US, but since it is in central London where it is impossible to find decent american diner food, it gets 4 stars. The Burgers here are pretty good if you haven't had a good one in the US in a while. They don't compare to the deliciousness that is an In-N-Out Burger(and shame on that guy for even mentioning godly IN-N-OUT on the same page as this place), but for London, they are good. The shakes are also pretty decent. What I really enjoy about this place is the american style service and atmosphere. I would recommend this place for Americans who haven't been home in a while and other people who want a taste of the American diner experience. Holy Cow! I have been searching for an American diner that reminds me of home for a while now, and I am pleased to say Ed'd Easy Diner has far surpassed my needs. Sweet potato chips? Check! American BBQ sauce? Double check! Chilli dogs? Hell Yeah! Milk shakes and root beer floats?? Thankfully Yes! I cannot begin to explain how rare it is to find a place that is all round American diner food, which in all fairness means it is the little things that matter. Walking around London, saw this, and pointed out to my friend that Ed's is the English's version of Johnny Rockets. He then wanted a milkshake, and I obliged and went in. I learned that if you want an Alco-shake, you have to buy food too. The last time I was here I had ordered food first, so that wasn't an issue. I'm guessing that this requirement has to do with some London law I don't know about. The shakes are good, though standard milkshakes are just that ... standard. Pricing - It's like taking a Johnny Rockets menu here in the US, and changing the dollar sign to a pound sign, thus more expensive than it should be (and JR can be pricey for a complete meal on its own ... no need for exchange rate increases too) Service is mixed, but I give them props for handling a couple of drunkards in the place quite well. It provided some interesting entertaining for a few minutes. I think there are multiple Ed's in London, because I recall being in a larger one the last time. This one is tiny. Never one to be impressed by a burger, Ed's Diner has, once again, failed to change my outlook. The overall experience isn't necessarily a bad one but I still remain unconvinced. Paying around/over £10 for a very average burger and some equally average chips leaves an unsatisfying taste. The food isn't really bad but it hardly inspires a return visit. So, why three stars and not two? You need a distraction from the bland food and Ed's provide those through is American roots. The efficient and in-your-face waiting staff make the visit a touch more personal and lively. That coupled with the dukebox playing the best of the 50s and 60s (mostly rock and roll and the genre that would become known as motown) from the States makes the atmosphere an upbeat and largely pleasant one. Most importantly, however, are the milkshakes. Not much to say other than go and have one. You can order these to take away, so no need to hang around. Not to mention free refills on soft fizzy drinks. Ed's Diner was the original American-style diner in London. People used to flock here for their cholestorol-busting burgers and thick, thick, thick malt milkshakes. However, other, better diners have come since it first arrived on old compton street in soho. It now looks tired and depressed. Surprisingly the food and milshakes are still pretty good it's just the décor and the awful staff that let this place down. They are rudeness personified. Ugly as well. I wanted to sit down for a milkshake the other day at 5pm and they wouldn't let me sit down as I hadn't ordered food - even though the place was half-empty. What a shame. It's goes for that authentic American feel, although to be honest these diner's probably never really existed, they're just how we imagine them to be, or maybe how we've seen them in the movies. So as you sit down and expect to be greeted by a character from American Graffiti - you have to admit the place has a bit of character. Ed's is one of those places that no self-respecting Londoner should be seen dead in. But I think it's safe to say that Ed's food and milkshakes deserve to be for us as well as all the tourists. I am a sucker for the milkshakes. I am salivating just thinking about them. I had the butterscotch milkshake here once. Ed's is not the kind of place you would take someone you were trying to impress. A generic burger menu and American diner theme does not scream 'I could be your perfect lover'. Nonetheless, as far as restaurants go, it's harmless. The burgers here are pretty decent and the milkshakes are well worth a visit on their own. Thick and indecently bad for you, they are the perfect accompaniment to a cheeseburger and fries although likely to lead you to an early grave if you indulge too often. However, I agree with the other reviews that the staff here are terrible. When you imagine an American diner you expect that faux friendliness and 'have a nice day' chat. Ed's has none of this. The first time I visited this place I felt like I had to keep interrupting their own conversations to get any service. I like Ed's style, classic American diner with old school music boxes which apparently have been there since they opened....when you look at them its easy to believe. To be frank I found this place less retro and more rusty. The milkshakes vwere pretty good but the food was below average to compete in the London burger market. The deserts are straight out of a box, nothing authentic or endearing about it. Ed's milkshakes bring all the boys to the yard... or, at least, they definitely bring me to the yard! Their chocolate shakes are great - I tend to stick to chocolate/chocolate malts as I am a bit of a purist in this realm, although they have an extensive selection of fancy one's like oreo cookie and peanut butter etc. The milkshakes and kitschy Americana are what I go here for, as I love the whole 1950s (slightly tacky) theme, and good milkshakes are hard to come by in this country. The shakes are also huge - they pour you a glassful and then you also get probably another glassful (or at least half a glassful) in the metal thingy that they mix it in. The food is ok - burgers, fries, you know the deal. I am not a fan of their cheese fries though!!!! It was just too artificial and runny for my liking! The kitkat sundae is delicious too! Traditional American-style diners are difficult to get right. Overdo it and its incredibly cheesy and a little nauseating, underdo it and its still cheesy but quite confusing. Ed's in Soho has hit the nail right on the head and yes its cheesy but in a very good way. If there's one thing everyone should do before they die its try one of these milkshakes. Everyone tastes like it was produced especially with you in mind and leaves your taste buds tingling for more. The food similarly is packed with lots of juicy calories that make you feel bad but oh so good at the same time. The interior is fun with lots of chequered patterns, mini jukeboxes along the counter and flashing neon signs. A little cramped so try to avoid going there on the stroke of lunch-time. The atmosphere is fun, and although it is a little pricey for mediocre burger and chips it is great for the occaisional treat. I did not plan to go to get a burger on that Sunday afternoon, but somehow ended up at Ed's, after walking around in Soho. This restaurant while restaurant seems to be the wrong term actually is very small. Very. Basically, you simple sit around the grill or kitchen at the centre. I went in, because it looked interesting, and I wanted to try Ed's anyway one time. The staff is funny, or weird. But not in a too bad way. But I can understand, that some people call them rude. Anyway, I cannot complain, they were not rude to me. But they were kind of rude to each other. But perhaps that's just normal for them, so I didn't really bother. The food is not really cheap. While the burgers are reasonably priced, in my opinion, the fries are not. So together it's not really that cheap. the good thing is, you can get a refill for your drink. If you want to. It's not the cleanest place too, but also okay in general. The quality of the food is average. I didn't expect too much, I did not get too much. It was okay. I would not go there, to get a really good burger. this is actually a review for Ed's diner located in the westfield shopping center (was not able to find it online) great place, friendly staff and very clean and fast when it comes to food :) we ordered a 'route 66' burger, chessy fries and pancakes. the burger was not the best on the menu but a good one. the bread could have been grilled for a sec or two and the cheese was missing for the real american burger feeling, but the cheesy fries made up for it! pancakes were very simple but exactly what you would expect in an american diner. you can choose between syrup or chocolate sauce. refills for the fizzy drinks are a good deal! I give it 4 stars for the interior. It really is cool inside. In the states, you still have many diners around. And Eds looks like one of them. Even have the tiny juke boxes. It would be loaded with giant salads, and reubens. Isn't a diner without a reuben sandwich. And the pickles on the burgers weren't dill. Can't put a sweet pickle on a burger. It's a law! Best place for a quick burger in Soho if you want to avoid the fast food. It's a really small, horseshoe shape of a diner, so can get really crowded but is always lively and fun. It can be quite expensive because you have to order burger and fries separately but food doesn't take too long to arrive and always tastes good. Go for the Oreo shake. Oh Ed's. How I love thee. Except I've never eaten here. I've never heard anyone have anything positive to say about the food (there's rumours of it being frozen, which doesn't fill me with confidence). BUT, my goodness the milkshakes are yum. I'm a sucker for a strawberry milkshake, but only the American kind that taste of fake strawberries. I don't want anything real. Synthetic strawberry is best. Let's not think about how bad it is for me, if you're in Eds you're not really thinking you're health. I like the little mini juke boxes on the counter, but I'm not sure hearing Twist & Shout every five minutes makes for a relaxing environment. When it's not busy, I quite like going here- unfortunately it's RAMMED pretty much all of the time- and this is a teeny tiny restaurant. It even has a bouncer in the evenings on the weekend- and there are often queues of people waiting to get inside. It can be expensive, but it's worth signing up for their loyalty card online where you can get a free burger/hot dog when you buy a drink- and being part of Ed's Club gets you a free milkshake in the time around your birthday- however they did kick me out of my seat when I tried to drink mine :( read more

My four stars go to the yumminess of everything I ate yesterday afternoon pre-Euro08 final. I was so hungry and wanted exactly what I got - a fresh cheese burger straight off the griddle, comforting gooey chilli cheese fries, and the opportunity to wash it down with a thick oh-so-sweet oreo shake. Oh lord. Cute 1950's-themed restaurant, but tiny, the service was great, with smiles all round, and super-fast food. I resented the high prices, but then again, I did't want to eat a rubbery cheap McD's burger. A little pricey for lunch but I love this version to the 60's American diner experience (a little more hammed up of course). Chilli dogs are where it's at. I have to order these every time. The milkshakes are sublime and the blue cheese n fries tops off a fun eating experience at Ed's easy diner. A meal comes to about £12-£13 and is worth trying once for the experience.
