My addiction for the Honey Lavender Latte began at Edmonds Cafe, at this happy hour event. The first sip led to an out-of-body-experience; the lavender was so aromatic, and the syrup infused with the milk created such a harmonious taste I didn't think was possible. I've returned to Edmonds ever since, hoping to relive that experience again, and while it has never disappointed, it just hasn't been the same. ‍ My silly melodrama aside, Edmonds is great if you want a quick bite or dessert to sweeten up your day, as they sell mochi donuts from Third Culture (which are amazing in their own regard, but their shop is a little far from campus), as well as your regular breads and croissants. There is plenty of tables for students to grab a coffee, sit down and study, the area well lit by both artificial and natural sunlight -- but it does get pretty crowded during the day, so plan accordingly. Pricing is also decent, around $5.25 to $5.75 depending on what you get - as pictured, Edmonds often features new and special drinks every month, which are marked down to $3 a cup if you visit on Wednesdays during their designated happy hour! The lattes were perfectly sweetened and service was always good. The place tends to be packed with studying students, but that's expected of most cafes around. Stopped by before my optometry appt today. The food options were minimal, as all the sandwiches but one were sold out. But since pre-made sandwiches tend to be dry, this may have been a win. Instead I ordered an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. It was solid. As was the hibiscus drink, I ordered mine without tea as my caffeine level was already maxed out. The true star here was the service. They were super prompt and friendly. The staff seemed to have compassion for its customers and each other. The service alone is why I would return. read more

I've come here twice, and both times have been honestly not great at all - I only visited on request of friends wanting to grab a drink or side salad here. The items on the menu are all not very cheap (~$8-9) for what they actually are. For instance, I most recently ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of fries included and an extra patty inside by recommendation of the cashier. The cashier told me that it would be a "triple decker grilled cheese sandwich," and didn't mention that the patty was an additional $3.50, or that the side of fries were so small I could have eaten all of them in one bite! This order came down to $12.50, and needless to say, I was not satisfied at all with my food at the price point. The grilled cheese sandwich was lightly burnt on the outside so that I could mostly taste the burntness in every bite, and the wait was quite long (~15 minutes) for an order this small and simple. By the time the order came out, the sandwich was no longer crispy, quite lukewarm, and lacked any sort of flavor, so I dipped the entire thing in ketchup to at least be able to taste something. It was definitely not a "triple decker grilled cheese" like the cashier said, and the quality of the food had me definitely feeling I could make something way better at home. Good Golly! To say Edmond's is the best coffee shop in the world is quite blatantly an understatement. But what sets Edmonds apart from some of the other amazing coffee shops our Earth has to offer? One word: super amazing customer service. After ordering two matcha lemonades, my twin sister and I were astounded and quite pleased to see the coffee brought to us from an amazing barista named Caroline Warren. Delivering our coffee directly, Caroline was quick to engage in conversation with my sister and me, and was clearly quite concerned that we had a satisfiable experience at her café. Edmond's Café, if you see this, please give Caroline a raise. Caroline encompasses everything Edmond's stands for. To conclude this review, I have written a poem that hopefully can convey my attitude towards Edmond's to some extent: Roses are red, Violets are blue, I don't do drugs because drugs are bad, Edmond's is coo. First time here. Got a sandwich. Nothing spectacular. Cost me about $10 for a club sandwich and a side salad. Seems cheap compared to other places. I like that it did come on a ciabatta bread. As for the service- cashier was pretty impatient even though there was no one else in line. Wasn't friendly at all and The food took a while to push out. The menu offers some international flavors. Honestly, this place is terribly slow on a Saturday afternoon. Wait is over 25mins. My chicken sandwich was border line cooked as it was slightly pink and stiff on the inside. After trying Edmonds because of how close it is to campus, it has quickly become my favorite coffee shop. Their coffee is superior to the many I have tried in the close vicinity of the UC Berkeley campus; my personal favorites are either a classic oat milk vanilla latte or an oat milk iced chai latte. Along with yummy coffee, they have cool weekly events like a wine tasting night every Tuesday. Can't speak much on the food--other than the fact that they do sell yummy Boichik bagels). As an optometry school student with a weekend clinic schedule at Cal, I-House has saved me from starving during my 45-min lunch breaks. In terms of location, they're one of the few places open on the east side of campus....if only FIFO cafe @ Haas weren't closed on the weekends! *shakes fist The food here is obviously overpriced - their sandwiches, salads, & burgers range around $9-12, and the burgers don't come with fries, which honestly just seems un-American. The service is also on the slower side. If I didn't have to be on campus or I wasn't on a time crunch, I would make an effort to NOT come here. Yelp 100 Challenge * 87/100 Found on the Northern tip of Bancroft Way, along Piedmont Avenue, IHF is a nice safehaven for Berkeley students (and locals alike) who want a relaxing atmosphere to balance out the stresses of summer classes. I wanted to immerse myself in the campus' competitive atmosphere and wanted to observe how students spent their afternoons. Food was not superbly impressive and although expensive, were served in large portions. I headed straight here as soon as I got to Berkeley and grabbed a latte to sharpen myself up a bit plus a sandwich. The food had a savory fettuccine appetizer on the side and ended up being too much for me to finish so I took it back and munched on the rest for dinner. 90% of the customers were students, absorbed in their work and would occasionally look up to take a bit off what they had. I had the tomato-basil pasta salad, which had no pasta in it. It was cherry tomatoes, basil and little balls of mozzarella cheese. It was good and the small portion is pretty big. The taste was a bit on the bland side. The hot pastrami sandwich was probably the saddest pastrami sandwich I've ever seen. The pastrami was a pretty thin layer, not the amount you would expect. And the sandwich size was a bit small and the focaccia bread was greasy and a bit hard to chew. The mocha bianca was decent, a bit on the sweet side. The I-House's patio is definitely the best though, sunny with a breeze and shady. Too bad there's not enough plugs to go around. read more

The food and coffee are pricey and portions are small, but tasty! Don't get the black coffee, but the Cafe Au Lait is good! The breakfast burrito is cheap and very filling. My favorite item on the menu is the Beet Salad! It is $6.00 which is expensive for the amount, but surprising it fills you up! It comes with plenty of sweet beets, portabello mushrooms, walnuts, mixed greens, feta cheese, and is made with a sweet and tangy sauce. I've also tried their Mayan salad, which comes in a big taco shell. It has black beans, corn, and avocados. They also have pre-made salads and sandwiches which are very pricey and not worth it. Three stars mainly for the food quality. It's good food, in general, and decent for the prices charged. Haven't tried any of their drinks. The rest of the aspects are above three starts. On a clear day there's a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay in the distance from this cafe on a hill. In addition to the nice Berkeley-students-studying-in-a-cafe vibe, there are outdoor patio areas, and the ambiance is nice overall. For over 5 minutes I stared as my food sat on the ledge between the kitchen and the waiter. This place is absolutely horrible. If i could give it a negative star review i would. Unfounded lowest i can give is a 1 star. I really think Yelp should retool the algorithm just for crappy places like this. Everything started great. Line was moving with Michael at cashier. I ordered food, muffin, rockstar, and coffee. He asks me what size coffee, and to make a choice i asked "how much are refills" to which he said something like "no cost" or relative to that. I dont think he had the emotional intelligence to decyhphier a coffee drinker asks those questions because if there is no refills i will buy a large. If there are refills i will but a small because im at the location to eat and will refill my cup once more on the way out. The cashiers change and a black woman starts to take orders. I had asked for a water and she literally looked at me like i had a cup begging for change. After we get through that ordeal i wait inline to ask for mayonnaise packet, and as i waited it literally took her 5 mins for each customer. Mind you i am on a 30 min lunch and have to get back and was hoping i could sit to eat. There was no enthusiasm or customer service skills being applied at this location. I felt like a burden. The environment felt toxic as if no employee there wanted to be there let alone service customers in a customer service industry. I feel bad for anyone who uses this facility. Unless you have time to waste for your basic easy daily needs dont use this place. If you like the feeling of paying people to feel like a burden for common things and get funny looks dont come here. read more

Maybe my most recent Yelp compliments are ironic, because to be honest I'm really not.that.cool. Yet I've known the words to every single from Rihanna, Chris Brown, Akon, Lady Gaga, Usher, and Kanye that has come out in the past year, all thanks to the I-House Cafe. There's something soothing about listening to hip-hop in a loud room where tree-sitters bathed, international students drink beer, the creepy guy gives you dirty looks for taking "his" table, and the smelly chess corner gets animated. Plus, taking a study break to look up and see my friend Greg (photo of Greg's ipod here: http://george.hotelling.net/90percent/pics/npr_podcast.png) awkwardly bouncing his head to rap never gets old. The coffee's terrible and the food mostly comes out of a microwave, but those nachos are pretty hard to resist and the lasagne isn't half bad if they re-heat it all the way through.
