We stopped into Edelweiss for breakfast on our way from Reno to LA. We wanted a change from our usual stop at Barnburner in Rocklin. The reviews were good so we thought we'd try it. The reviews are right: it looks like a little hole in the wall, easily missed. Wood paneling on the walls, carpeted floor, very much a homey 70s feel, which I like. The good: our waitress was a doll. Very efficient and she checked on us often throughout our stay. They had Earl Gray tea, another plus, most places don't have it so I carry my own just in case. Another thing they got right was my bacon. I prefer it extra crispy (a couple of steps before burning, I want it to crunch when I bite) and it's rare a restaurant will get it right. Those that do get extra points from me. ;) The orange juice seemed fresh and it's cute getting juice in Mason jars. The bad: hubby had biscuits and gravy and he said you could tell the gravy was pre-made, like you get out of a jar. That was all that was on his plate: 2 biscuits and gravy with bacon bits in it. No potatoes, fruit, nothing extra. No frills for sure. Son and I had bacon, eggs and potatoes and it wasn't bad. The ugly: what in the heck do they butter the toast with? Look at my picture. It seemed poured on, just in the center too. I thought maybe it was margarine (yuck), but margarine spreads. This was almost a puddle? I usually eat half the toast with my meal and the other half after with jelly as my "dessert," and by the time I got to the last slice, the spread had separated and was grainy, like crystallized. What is that junk? Service is slow. And I mean sloooow. We waited at least 20 minute for our food, another 5 minutes and we would've left. Not good when hubby is a a diabetic and needs to eat. They were busy but not slammed so I'm not sure what the wait was for? But that's reason enough for us to not return. If the food was stellar, sure. But it was just okay. I'd rate Edelweiss as a place you could return to if you had to, like if a friend chose it, you could get an okay meal there. But would we go out of our way to visit? Doubtful. We'll stick with Barnburner. read more

Friendly, Flavorful, Fantastic! We chose this restaurant because of all the great reviews. Those great reviews are true! Yes, the food here really is that good. We happened to arrive just before closing but they still fit us in anyway. They have a monstrous menu of breakfast and lunch items. My wife chose one of their huge omelettes, and I got the super turkey and bacon sandwich. Recite I got chicken gumbo soup. It's very tasty but keep in mind it's pretty spicy if you are sensitive to spicy things. If you like waffles or pancakes, they have a ton to choose from. I was tempted by the pineapple waffle. This tiny breakfast and lunch eatery is located in Auburn on High Street. A family member suggested this place for weekday lunch, she and her late husband loved to eat at local small business owned breakfast joints. They enjoyed eating here from time to time. The restaurant is totally not much to look at and some folks would call it a hole in the wall. The decor looks like its stuck in time, the time being the late 1970s/early 1980s complete with carpeted floors. Onto the food, I ordered a small plate breakfast with scrambled egg, bacon, hash browns, and a slice of sourdough toast. $8. It was ok. Basic good ole solid no thrills American breakfast. No fresh farm to fork here, it is very "dineresque" dining. Hubs ordered turkey club sandwich $10.75 and a coke. The fountain soda is served in a huge glass canning jar. The sandwich was basic and simple. Our relative ordered one of their many omelette choices. The omelette was big, fat, fluffy, and juicy as eggy cheese omelettes go. Plus it came with 2 slices of toast. Huge serving size for ~$11. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The showstopper was the homemade jams. Yummers! Flavorful without being overly sweet. It comes in little canning jars with tiny jam spoons. Cute. Plus they sell the jams. Look for the stand near the cash register; tons of varieties. I tried the raspberry and mixed berry. The waitress was a hoot. Fun spirited personality. She was on top of our orders and all the others. Great waitress. I didn't try their homemade desserts. The table near us did, the cinnamon roll and bread pudding looked delicious. I would be interested in coming back for a cup of Joe, dessert, toast and jam. So you may ask, if the food was basic and the decor dated... why the 4 stars. Well, as I was eating my food... I looked around the joint. It was hopping. The food came out hot and quick. Drinks were refilled. All different generations of folks were dining here; some with friends, family, or solo. All were enjoying the food and more so the interactions with the waitress and even the cook came out for a bit. This place is more than a place that serves food, it's a local welcoming gathering spot. How awesome is that!? Very awesome. What's not to like about Edelweiss? I had a great mid-week lunch after a long drive and discovered this unique restaurant. I got there before the rush of lunch hour and got a great seating location to view the out side activity of Auburn. (Note: I was able to see my 1st Tesla-Semi truck maneuver and park in the gas station across the street to deliver Pepsi. Quite entertaining as it had to maneuver around another standard 18 wheeler to park; driver did a perfect job). read more

My wife and I just ate breakfast here on the way home from Lake Tahoe. Looked up breakfast spots on Yelp as we drove down the highway. So glad we picked this amazing little gem! The food is as good as breakfast gets. Pancakes are fluffy and amazing. Hash browns cooked perfectly to perfection. And my bacon and cheddar omelet was the best omelet I've had in twenty years. Again, like the pancakes, cooked to perfection. And the staff.. now a days service is most always lacking. Not here at Edelweiss. The young lady busing tables was so sweet and polite. And very attentive, as were the waitresses. 10 outta 10 on service too. I'm telling you, they are doing breakfast right here! What a fun discovery. We were excited to try Edelweiss given the reputation they had, but sorry to say, we never got to try the food. After waiting for 30 minutes to be seated when we were 4th on the wait list, we were left sitting without so much as a hello from the server. After 10 minutes someone came by to ask for drinks, but refused to take our order. We waited another 10 minutes and finally received a couple glasses of water. We watched as 3 parties seated after us had their orders taken, despite being promised the server would come take our order soon. After having waited for almost 60 minutes from arrival to this point we decided to leave and take our business somewhere else. There were open tables, so it wasn't an issue of too many customers. I originally wanted to go to Edelweiss in Old Town but being that I'm not from the area, I went to this location instead by accident via GPS. The thought of so many choices of omelettes intrigued me. We came early so was told to sit anywhere. The place is small and clean. I will say if you are not in a real hurry then this place will suit you just fine. The waitress was very sweet and friendly and seemed to know the usuals that came in. The coffee was pretty good and would get it again. I ordered a sausage, cheese, avocado and Ortega chili omelette. I would say it was perfect. Very cheesy and the ratios of fillings were perfect for me. The sourdough toast was buttery and actually tasted like sourdough. My daughter is on a specific diet and they were very kind with substitutions. She enjoyed he omelette and oatmeal as well. The bowl was very generous with oatmeal and fixings on the side. Lovely old school breakfast place in downtown Auburn. They've been there since 1981, so they've mastered what they're doing, delicious down home breakfasts. Their omelette menu is overwhelming, probably about 30+ different types. Since I couldn't make an omelette decision, I had the eggs Benedict with country potatoes. Hubby had the pancake, egg, and sausage meal. Both were very good, neither of us could finish our big meals. Must go back and take an omelette plunge! Disappointed that the 3 omelets we ordered were hard like it lacked butter during the cooking. Sadly Denny's in Newcastle make better omelets and cheaper. It is also expensive perhaps due to inflation. We're not going back. Edelweiss has fallen in quality below others in the area, Sweetpeas, Awful Annie's, Nancy's Cafe and Katrina's Cafe. Great food that will burn a hole in your pocket. It was high quality and came in a good amount of time (not suspiciously quick nor terribly long). The quality of waffle is not one that you could typically find anywhere else, which I appreciate when dining out to breakfast! Eggs were cooked as desired, hash browns did not have any kind of strange aftertaste, and there was certainly enough to share. Perfect sleepy morning breakfast to stop at on our way to Tahoe. Service was wonderful, food was delicious with very generous portions, and the ambiance is such a nostalgic slice of Americana - a classic diner. After visiting two other Yelp-recommended brunch spots (Four Sisters, our fave, and Katrina's) that each had 1.5-2 hour waits, we got lucky on our 3rd try! After barely any wait at all, we were shown to our table. Service at that point was a little slow, but courteous. I ordered the last of the homemade corned beef hash while hubby got the country scramble. Mine was delicious! Poached eggs were cooked perfectly, too. Golden, creamy yolkiness over tender and juicy corned beef with fluffy potatoes. Yum! Hubby enjoyed his scramble and cleaned his plate quick. Or daughter loved that her pancake came in the shape of Mickey Mouse. Unless you're a big guy, you're going to leave half the food behind. Bacon is acceptable, but not spectacular. (10 years ago they had spectacular bacon. Now it's ordinary bacon. The Place: The restaurant is located in downtown Auburn with plenty of street parking outside. This is a small restaurant with big windows facing the sidewalk. They have table and booth seating. During our visit, we sat in a booth. The Food: The menu offers breakfast and lunch. They also have daily specials listed on a board. Since the place is known for their omelets, I decided to get one! I had the "Hawaiian omelet," and my husband got "Clam Chowder" -The soup of the day and "Turkey sandwich." I had a spoon of the soup, and it was delicious. We first got our drinks and "homemade jelly" to spread on our toasts. The food came out promptly. My omelet was just amazing! Everything inside was cooked to perfection; the cheese had a wonderful texture, the Canadian bacon and pineapple just cooked perfectly. For the side, I got country potatoes. They were yummy and seasoned just right! When I thought food could not get any better, I put some of their jelly in my toast and it was amazing! Husband enjoyed his sandwich and potato salad. One of the best omelet if ever had! If this is your first time here, get one! The Service: Service was wonderful! Our drinks and coffee got refilled often. I had it served with fresh fruit instead of potatoes. My friend had the scrambled eggs breakfast with hashbrowns and toast. His was very good as well. The food is done well, though nothing cutting edge on the breakfast menu, so no pork belly or tater tots fried in truffle oil ... thank god. So, if you want really good normal American breakfast in a real old school restaurant, Edelweiss is the place to come. This place was so old school, that I saw NOBODY on their smart phone poking and swishing away, instead they were carrying on actual conversation by talking!
