I've been coming here for breakfast for years, however I get the same thing every time. Egg and cheese on a hard roll. I really should branch out and try a different item (or even come for dinner), but the sandwich is SO GOOD! The roll is crispy since they grill it, but then the egg and cheese is so gooey and delicious. I love it! I can always count on this since I've found it very difficult to find a place in Clinton/Westbrook/Old Saybrook able to duplicate a delicious breakfast. Nice seating outside along the river. Only problem is the service. Best thing to do is call in your order ahead and then sit there and enjoy the view while you eat your to-go. Otherwise you will be waiting at least 40 mins for your meal. Visited Ed's place last weekend looking for lobster rolls and fried fish. That is what they offer. Burgers, fish, shellfish, hot dogs, platters, etc... the menu is pretty big. It used to be a walk up and sit at a picnic table joint. Now they have a wait staff to take your order at a table. I miss the simplicity of ordering at the counter and eating next to the water... Guess we'll have to find another outdoor spot next summer for that experience. read more

Location location location. That is what earned the 3 stars. You sit on picnic tables along the river, there is a small playscape for kids on one end and it is dog-friendly. A nice setup to enjoy a well over an hour wait for your subpar breakfast. The potatoes were the cubed frozen type that are reheated to the point of some being unedible (almost rock-like). The pancakes are massive thick dough blobs that will sit in your stomach for a day or two while they finish rising and/or cooking. My advice for anyone coming here would be to eat before and enjoy the atmosphere and the company of family and friends. That's what we did. read more

Edd's is a very cute little family run place by the river with a lovely view! We chose to sit at one of the several picnic tables with large umbrellas. You place your order inside and it is brought to you by a server. I ordered Eggs Benedict with home fries and it was delicious! Their hollandaise sauce was really tasty and the home fries nice and crispy just how I like them. My only issue was the service and wait time. We were waiting for our breakfast for about 45 minutes before one of the servers mistakenly brought us someone else's food. Another 15 minutes or so minutes later, we finally have the correct order with no acknowledgment about how long it had taken. However, if you don't mind the potentially long wait times, you should definitely go check it out. It helps that there's such a great view to enjoy and if you order a coffee you can go back in and refill your cup. The food was worth the wait this time! read more

My family went canoeing next door at Black Hall and saw this place from the water. Another place, Bill's, 100 feet down the road was packed, so with two small children and good reviews we chose Edd's. Only a few other customers. Relaxed ambiance, right on the water. This is a nice place for lunch, I liked the outside seating area. My dining companion and I ordered a lobster roll and crab cake sandwich. Both were good but I wasn't wowed by either. Cute little shack on the water with a wide selection of seafood and home style meals. The staff are so nice and welcoming its hard to give only 3 stars but i'm only judging the food. We had a lobster roll and the lobster pie. Upon first bites of either dish it is wonderful but then after a few more bites your tongue starts to numb slightly because everything was so over salted. Even the lobster roll was oddly way more salty than most. They also put shreds of lettuce on it which become slimy and wilted under the hot lobster. Definitely not the best on the shoreline! the price is steep too - $24 for 1 regular sized roll with a few french fries. The lobster pie was very rich and did have large chunks of meat mostly from the claw. Overall it is not my fav spot in the area and probably won't be back. read more

I usually enjoy our meals at Edd's, and yesterday's was good, too . . . until . . . I found a hair in my soup. I know it wasn't mine because it was black and I am totally gray. I told the waitress, and she was appalled, saying simply, "Ewww, that's awful." I assumed she would return and offer some recompense--maybe a partial refund, maybe a dessert? I have been eating lobster rolls from Maine to Connecticut for many, many years and I have to say I had the best one ever today at Edd's. Just the right amount of Mayo, with just a little minced celery. Very, very fresh lobster meat and a nicely buttered and toasted hotdog roll in which to nest the lobster meat. I can't wait to go back and get another one. Oh, and by the way, the New England clam chowder is just as good as chowder I had at Cape Cod from the winner of the annual chowder contest. So, I guess we won't be driving to the Cape any time soon....not with Edd's just around the corner. read more

had my first experience at Edd's last night. To say the least, it will be part of our rotation when craving a lobster roll in an outdoor setting. Real mellow little joint with outdoor seating that provides an excellent view of the sunset. A little playground (slide, some swings and a couple other odds and ends), which is nice if you have little ones. Ordered a small hot lobster roll (5" for $15.00) - going rate for sure on the CT Shoreline. Heaping pile of lobster and came with a side of fries. Was pleasantly surprised at the size, taste and reshness - so many other places really do skimp on the lobster portion. We also had the crab cakes - which are made at Edds and also left an impression on my girl. There were some daily specials (Striper, Roast Pork, Lobster Pie and some others) that are all made from scratch at Edd's. If you're looking for a quiet and mellow little Shoreline Shack that offers quality food (at reasonable prices - lobster rolls ain't cheap) without any big frills or live music, then really, give Edd's a try. These things are top of the line loaded w fresh warm lobster and served on a buttered roll. My family has vacationed on the shoreline (Madison) from the DC area for 28 years. On Friday night (Aug 2nd) we stopped in at Edd's (BYOB) for the first time. We arrived six minutes before they stopped taking orders at 8 pm. Our waiter graciously took our hurried order of baked salmon with lobster/sauce, green beans, sauteed zucchini, and shrimp tacos. We didn't wait long to have one of the best meals we've ever had on the shoreline; the food was delicious and prepared perfectly. Great water view on an inlet. Always a great place to go for lunch when we take a drive up to the outlets or shop along the shore line. The long dogs are excellent with the buttered and grilled buns and the French fries are always crispy. You eat in a little gazebo overlooking the inlet. My fiance and I went here for a breakfast date. The dining area is small, something like a converted gazebo with plastic windowpanes that look out to the river. The staff was very warm, friendly and accommodating of our requests to substitute side dishes. We had: Hot lobster roll: the best I've ever tasted Cold lobster roll: just as delicious and fresh Caribbean fish tacos: very tasty New England Clam Chowder: one of the best I've ever tasted Toasted apple bread: just the right amount of sweetness. The food did take awhile to come out, but it gave us time to chat and relax, which I enjoyed. Nobody there was rushed, everyone seemed very content. I guess they all knew the food was worth the wait! While the hot dog was good the chowder was awful. It had a strong taste of parmesan cheese and the bisque was not great either. The woman who took our order was rude and short answering questions after I told her it was my first time. I was also disappointed in the seafood selection there. They had a sea dog which is fried cod in a hot dog roll. They were sold out and that was only seafood choice. Prices were also pretty high. $4.50 cents for a hot dog by itself! read more

I have often driven by Edd's Place and wondered about the food. Yesterday a friend and I went there for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised at a fairly large menu filled with sandwiches, lobster rolls, panninis, desserts, fried foods and I believe they also have a breakfast menu. They may have started out as food to go, but during the warmer months you can enjoy eating outdoors under an umbrella at a picnic table or a glass enclosed dining area. Moderately priced and the turkey sandwich I had was served on the kind of hard roll I love - crispy exterior with a soft inner bread. They use only Hellmann's and really good deli meats and some they actually roast themselves. I had their N.E. Clam chowder and liked it. We also had the lobster bisque which was good, but needed a bit more lobster. My friend had the buttered lobster roll and loved it. That came with french fries and coleslaw and was moderately priced at $12.95. The staff were very friendly and efficient and offered a taste of what I would be ordering. I would give a return visit. I am not sure if they remain open all year long, but if you are local, I recommend supporting them. read more

Stumbled upon this really nice place today. Didn't know what to expect, but we were quickly greeted buy several smiling faces from the staff. As you walk thru the front door...a display case is right in your face with Many tempting offerings...many of which are homemade desserts. We ordered the chowda and lobster bisque, hot dogs, pulled pork grinder and Sea dog...a fried catfish filet, lettuce and tarter sauce served on a hot dog bun... very generous portions and quite pleasing on the pallet. Although it is billed a TO GO spot...Edd's does offer outside seating by the water...A nice touch....covered space is also available. Don't even dream about this place for breakfast if you are in a rush. We attempted to go to one of our favorites places for breakfast but were saddened to find it was closed on the day we came to town. We quickly looked for other options. Edd's Place popped up and didn't have a line out the door. The ordering process took a few minutes, but I was optimistic when I was told they had real maple syrup. We ordered a muffin, an egg sandwich, and 6 pancakes and it took 45 minutes, which may not seem that long, but by the time we finished, it was almost lunch time- ordered at 9:45m served at 10:30...but I can live with that. What I can't live with is being lied to about syrup. Among other things, I am something of a syrup snob. I grew up in New England and, if I'm rating a restaurant for breakfast, in particular, the establishment loses one star right off the top if they do not offer REAL maple syrup- the kind that comes from a tree. If they offer it but it costs extra, it is good for half a star. If it is on the table for no charge, they start with 5 and are judged by everything else that you ordinarily judge a restaurant by. If they tell you they have it, but they don't, they lose 3 stars. I asked if they offered real maple syrup when I ordered. Surprised with a "Yes" answer, I decided to try the pancakes instead of the stuffed french toast special. I was likewise charged the minimal fee for the special syrup. When the food FINALLY came out, I started sipping each syrup cup to find which one was the real McCoy. The four little tubs that I sampled tasted like run of the mill, cheapo, junk syrup. When the waitress came back to the table with the last of the pancakes I asked which one was the "real maple syrup." I was floored when she told me that "they all are." If you've ever had it, you know the difference. The fourth star was lost because of the length of time we had to wait. We weren't the only people inconvenienced by the wait. Two separate gentlemen were held up for 25 minutes each for to-go egg sandwich orders. Long story short- don't bother if you are in a rush, and they don't have REAL maple syrup, in case that is a deciding factor for you. read more
