What a captivating evening of food art and fun. From the minute you walk in, you can see that it will be an intimate experience. Everything is placed in this petite space, so you are right next to all the other guest who are here to share in this creative experiment. The host for the evening was very hospitable, but we had to inaudibly laugh at times because it was a tight squeeze for him to get between tables and we got some booty action on our food sometimes. Now some might find that infuriating and I can see that, but we found it slightly comical and had to contain our giggles at times. It brought a bit of light heartedness to this, what could be considered pretentious meal. The food was fascinating for sure. We did the 20 course menu and certainly got a belly full of entertainment. Trying to savor and dissect each bite was fun for sure. Now not every course was delightful, but there were enough remarkably interesting ones to make the strange ones disappear into your mind somewhere. The ones that really stood out to me were: Walking Down the Isle: hydroponic greens, pistachio butter, edible flowers; What a Potato Dreams Of: confit purple potato, house made kimchi, coconut chili foam; 66.5 Degrees: sous vide egg, croissant foam, prosciutto chip (which was like the best breakfast you could eat!); Out of the Forest: edible moss, escargot, truffle foam, enoki mushrooms; and What's in the Tin: cauliflower cream, fried cauliflower, Parmesan crumble. These were just a few that stood out to me. But many more were fun and enjoyable. I also recommend the wine pairing. It was really an entertaining and memorable evening. This was a special birthday dinner for our daughter. She is a "foodie" and has watched programs about this type of food exploration and has wanted to experience it. It was a surprise when she saw "farm to table" and you could tell she was a little concerned but when she realized "modern farm to table" meant a molecular gastronomy type experience she was beyond excited. She almost knocked her dad down while hugging him in excitement. I was pleased that they did not give us concerned looks bringing a 16-year-old and 13-year-old there. That was a worry for me with a restaurant with such an intimate setting. I think there were only 14 of us for the Saturday dinner. The dinner was a 16 course experience running a little over 3 hours. While it was a little longer than I would have preferred - time really did fly by and we were constantly engaged. It's hard to describe, it's something you need to experience. It's about savoring the favors and not just eliminating hunger. On the whole - I think I would have preferred about 12 courses. But when talking about the experience, each of us had different favorites and items we could do without. So how would I choose which items to eliminate? So this is a restaurant that you visit to have an "Experience". So if you are a man who is 6'5, just worked 12hrs, and hungry...then you may want to go elsewhere...lol. I just wanted to mention that because I know many people may come here expecting a "traditional" dining experience but it is anything but that. Now lets get on with the review. Needless to say this place is expensive. For 2 people you will pay $500 and if you partake in the wine tasting you are looking at $600. There is a $50 deposit required when you make a reservation that you get back. It takes several months to get in, and you will be placed on a waiting list more than likely. The whole dining experience is 3hrs. The price is one reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5. Honestly, I feel it should be about $200 cheaper, at the end of the day...its a great "experience" but the actual function of the food is for art and eccentricity not substance. You will be escorted through 27 dishes, each with a theme. My personal favorite was "The forest". The worst of the dishes was the Seafood Ceriviche. My boyfriend wouldn't touch it. I took one bite and wanted to spit. Oddly enough, all of the other patrons ate every last bite of it. For me, I just didn't like it and just the look of it wasn't appetizing. But for the exotic people who like to live on the edge...that dish is perfect for you. Overall, the concept was great and I enjoy the idea of only dining with 8 other people at most. This is something I would do once, just to say I did it, or if you have some money and want to switch things up for a day. I must warn you...if you are a "meat and potatoes" kind of person, this restaurant may not appeal to you. Man, where do I start with this review? My husband and I are pretty serious foodies. We enjoy eating really good food, and really appreciate the thought and effort put into a dish that may take someone hours, days or even weeks to prepare. We arrived at Eculent on time and ready to go. Our welcome began with a self prepared cocktail that we chose the flavors for. After our cocktail we chose the wine pairing to go with our dinner. The chef began with our salad course by showing us the lab. A freeze dried Caesar salad was the beginning of what we knew would be an amazing experience. I cannot even describe how amazing a leaf and toppings can be. It was followed by what looked like a white chocolate truffle but turned out to be French onion soup. We were shown all the unusual ingredients that are stored in the lab, a 3D printer and different tools for preparing the food and then we headed back to the dining area. I won't begin to go through all 20-25 courses we enjoyed but some of my favorites included the BLT, freeze dried prosciutto and melon, cotton candy pork belly, sirloin and Brussels sprouts. There were just 6 of us at the table so it was a intimate and very personal experience. Questions and comments were welcomed the entire time and the chef was very generous with his wine pouring. This place is amazing. I am so delighted that there is a fine dining restaurant close to home and we do not have to travel to mid-town or downtown Houston to eat amazing culinary food. My husband and I go to a lot of the top100 restaurants that are listed and this place needs to be on the list. It is actually better than a lot of the ones we have been to. The food, atmosphere, and service is wonderful. I have been here twice already and both times have not been disappointed. A great place for date night or even to propose to someone special. I love that the lights, music, pictures, and even the scent of the restaurant changes with each dish. The food is amazing. I have posted pics and it speaks for itself! No weird gross dishes here even if the chef uses gastronomic in his cooking. The food is all farm to market and spectacular. I would definitely recommend the wine pairing since they make all their wines there too! It's also neat because they give you a tour of gardens and lab. Came here with a Groupon and wow it did not disappoint! It's a small intimate restaurant and requires reservations. They gave us a tour of the food lab which was really cool! We had 20 courses and the presentation was so unique for each one. They were all pretty small but by the end of it we were stuffed! It was basically flavor explosion one after another. Underwhelming flavors and textures. Did not seem high quality at all for the most part. Too many freeze dried dishes. I had higher expectations from something that is supposed to be a fine dining experience. It seems like people are trying to convince themselves they like this because it's "unique" and "Instagramable" but once you get past the gimmicks the food does not live up to the hype. I couldn't have been more pleased!!! From the moment we entered the restaurant we were immersed in an incredible experience that at times seemed mind blowing! It's an experience I would recommend to everyone that can appreciate detailed masterpieces! Just left from this restaurant, wow is the first thing that comes to mind. This was an amazing experience, from seeing the garden and lab, to sampling the small bites paired with wine, was wonderful! I didn't think I'd be full from eating small bites, but I was wrong, I am at a very comfortable full, not overly stuffed-food coma, but a pleasant full. When it comes to doing "out of this world stuff" with food, Eculent is in a league of its own. They are big on using freeze drying, aerating, gastronomy, and some other wild techniques to create some amazing combinations of tastes, appearances, etc. in this sense, my hat is off to them. The setting is small. Four tables of two and one 4-person table. It's interesting with dynamic art on the wall that changes throughout the night. I must have used the word "interesting" 20 times throughout the evening because indeed, many of the servings were just that -interesting! Not the best food I have ever tasted but it was all "interesting" at the least! Blake and crew absolutely deliver the royal butt-kiss when it comes to service. My hat's off there. When I'm dropping major $, it's reasonable to expect in my opinion. Buuuuut when it comes to real value $, things go down in my book. My wife and I used the Groupon coupon for the 15 course meal. It was $169 for the pair - normally $280. (That $280 will be important later.). So I'm thinking that dinner is covered, plus tip. Well, I'm thinking wrong. My wife and I had a bottle of wine at $35. When the check came, the "service fee" of 18% had been charged on the $280 (wtf?) plus wine and then the $280 deducted (back to the coupon) so we had the service fee on $280 and wine, tax on $169 plus wine (I think). Bottom line, we owed another $130 at checkout! So even without wine and only drinking ice water, we would have still owed about $100 at the end of the evening. So the night was $300 for two people WITH a $111 coupon! If I had gotten roped into spending $400 there, you would still here me screaming!!! . I bring this up because I can see how a well intentioned patron could easily be in a financial jam thinking the Groupon coupon covered almost all of the experience. The experience is "interesting" but I can find "interesting" for a helluva lot less $$$. Eculent makes a dinner at Vic & Anthony's or Perry's seem like a STEAL!!! read more

Food is 5 stars. Service varied from uncomfortable to excellent to awkward. We were informed that dinner started at 6:30 and that the kitchen tour was before dinner. Furthermore, that we should arrive early to tour the kitchen, so we arrived at 6:00 but the tour did not start until 6:50. This made for an uncomfortable wait. The kitchen tour was interesting and the service during the meal was excellent. I will point out at this time that the same songs were heard about 3 times throughout the dinner which became annoying. The bill came with an $85 "service fee" which was expected, but also had an option for a "tip". First time I have seen this, and the table next to us was also confused. It was a bit awkward and we decided to leave it as is. Not sure if we were rude or wise to do so. I think it's a great food experience and if you are on the fence, I would get the groupon but be prepared for the service charge. read more

AMAZING!! I am so glad and excited to have such a wonderful place so close to home. Usually we have to travel into the city (Houston) to eat more creative cuisine. Oh how surprised I was to find this place 10 minutes from my house. Not only was the food incredibly creative but it also taste incredible. Sometimes with fine dining taste is comprised for creativity, oh but not here!!! Every dish was delicious despite the fact that it may have looked like a science project. I happen to have a gluten intolerance and they were VERY accommodating. I never felt like I was missing anything because of the substitutions. The ambiance is very nice and intimate. The photos on the wall and lighting change with the courses. This is the perfect place to bring a date. The manager was SUPER friendly and very passionate about what he does. He so kindly gave us two free passes for a winery tour. The owner was also very present and served us a few of the dishes personally, which I really enjoyed. No it's not cheap but it is well worth the money because you are paying for an EXPERIENCE and not just a meal. My favorite course was the handheld salad (It must have been pretty epic if a SALAD was my favorite). I can't stop thinking about that pistachio butter!!!!! Many of the dishes that I had were pretty boring. The dehydrated Forrest Mushroom Salad is one of its highlights but it was tasteless. The smoke needed more time to penetrate and it was just for theater. I didn't find the intros to each course captivating either. Very flat. The three courses of desserts seems to rush to end service. The version I had was chocolate. All three courses played on chocolate. Just too much. The changing of lights during each course was also very amateur. All around disappointing. The amount of thought, creativity, research and pure perfectionism that must have gone into creating eculent, its' atmosphere, menu, sourcing food vendors, curating the music and even the olfactory scents that are gently changed throughout the experience to perfume the room with complimentary scents to the amazing food is just mind-boggling. Chef Skinner even takes you on a tour of his "Willy Wonka" lab where all these mind-blowing dishes are developed. There's even a 3D food printer the Chef / Inventor / Distiller / Winemaker has in there for printing edibles that look like other worldly objects. If you are a super-foodie like me (and I live in Vegas where there is no shortage of amazing,) you MUST put this on your bucket list. I've read some of the other reviews here and I am at a complete loss as to how anyone would think that "a different wine with each course" could legally mean that any restaurant could serve you 25 glasses of wine and let you drive home! Granted, those unaware of this gastro-spot's portions ahead of time (although there are enough pictures online to research that,) might think of a "course" as a huge plate of "meat & 3", but who could eat 25 huge courses anyway? This is a bucket-list experience, and when we dined there recently, the Chef was more than happy to sell us a bottle of excellent red wine which we just added to our check. This hardworking crew (of JUST 3 people) deserves every accolade and might I say huge tips! It's very hard to explain the experience here. I was very impressed overall and left with that feeling you would have after the "dinner with a show" type of after effects. I felt as though I was thoroughly entertained whilst being served a fantastic and diverse meal. Everything was delicious and some items were even fun. The idea that I can be included in a small group and not really have a choice in what I will be eating added some excitement and the delivery of every course was great. DINERS BR WARE!!! I'm pretty sure many of the reviews here are fake. I wish I didn't have to write this, but I can't keep from warning people about this terrible experience. To begin, the ambiance was HORRIBLE. Loud elevator music for three hours with sporadic color changing lights. The silverware and glassware were cheap and had stains on them. The food was really really bad. The guy basically bought a freeze dryer and a cotton candy machine and made pretty much every dish with them. There was one salad dish with freeze dried lettuce that no joke tasted like cigarettes. We had to spit it out. Out of the 26 "dishes" one was ok, and that was a bite sized piece of fried fish. The main course was a sad, over cooked piece of meat that tasted like Salisbury steak from a school lunchroom. The chef was very unprofessional and was continuously asking us what our favorite dish had been so far. We politely made something up. Moral of the story: go to Chick-fil-A because this place sucks. What an amazing experience with Chef Skinner. The attention to detail really puts the experience above and beyond. All your senses will be tested. The food is nothing short of amazing!! Getting a personal one on one (only 6 person dining setting) dining experience with the lab tour and getting to ask a lot of questions and get to know Chef Skinner and his thought process with the dishes is was memorable. I definitely want to go back and try out his new menu. I had a couple of allergies and was thankful that Chef Skinner personalized some dishes for me. I had really high hopes for this place after learning about their concept and the history of the chef and after having amazing experiences at similarly themed restaurants in Europe. Unfortunately it falls short in many aspects. It touts itself as a dining experience for the senses and it is in many ways, just not always in the best way. Outside of smell, all the other senses were either confused, underwhelmed, or just plain bored. Keeping the price in mind, the ingredients, flavor, and presentation were all sub par. Seating was uncomfortable, we couldn't even get new silverware, and their choice of music was bizarre. And to final straw was it was a birthday dinner...and nothing...no special treat or acknowledgement. The only bright spot was the friendless of the staff. This is not just a fancy beautiful small quaint restaurant, although it is, but it's more of a complete sensory eating experience. You will walk out being blown away in a 3 hour journey that starts by a view of the ingredients and processes in the lab/pantry that makes you in no way ever question the price tag. The chef has created the most amazing small bite sized dishes and others that are slightly larger and randomly extravagant. However everything is unique and some highlights we tested were the quail egg sized French onion soup, the mini BLT that looked nothing like a BLT and at the same time was the best BLT I've ever had. So many other highlights but no way can you describe all the flavors and experience. You must do this yourself. (A continuation from the review in Part 1 above) 10th course: Rock, Paper, Scissors Another fun one to play with - inside the "rock" was a beautiful mushroom pate, and we used the paper to set the pate on to help make "rolls" out of herb leaves we snipped off with the provided scissors. Fun and good flavors. 11th course: Vineyard Snow A red wine granita to cleanse the palate - definitely refreshing and a nice prep for the "main" course to come. The lovely host and waiter came around a "sprintzed" each person's glass with a "surprise ingredient". It was a liquid made from a South American berry called "buzz bells" that briefly tingled and shocked everyone's mouths into a sort of numb state. Very fun. 12th course: From Farm and Field A beautiful plate with a sous vide grass fed steak and sous vide herb carrots. Filling and well prepared. 13th course: Meal in a Meal By far the coolest course of the night - three bites encapsulated inside test tubes. It's aptly named, as the first tube held a "caprese salad" - dehydrated mozzarella, basil, and tomato. Delicious. The second tube held "mushroom risotto", and the coup de grace was the third tube of "tiramisu". 14th course: Pop, Pop, Pop Another interactive one - we poured a test tube of mulled wine into a small glass with puffed rice, fruit, and nuts and it went crazy popping everywhere. Good flavor, good fun. 15th course: Texas Truffle A pile of dried dirt is presented to you on a plate and you start to think "huh, I wonder what this- holy crap it's dissolving and there's a brownie in there!". Another fun dish, and a good dessert. 16th Course: Cigar Box A great way to cap the evening, with little chocolates, truffles, and macarons to go along with french press coffee should you so choose. All in all, a once-in-a-lifetime meal - and I didn't have to go further than a little ways down to Kemah. Should you do the wine pairing (and you should, as the wines are fantastic), they also have a bed and breakfast on site that was rated the #1 best in the state of Texas and #3 on the entire gulf coast. It is priced way above what is average Texan is used to. However, the experience that comes with a price tag is well justifies the final number. You pay for what you get... 20 course dinner is remarkable - i might have not liked all the flavors, but it is critical to stay open minded. We bought a Groupon for eculent for Valentine's Day and went on Friday, May 1. We had a superb time! eculent is a very unique experience. It's expensive, but for us was well worth it. It's unique in that every course of the 7-course evening was unexpected and wonderful. The staff is very professional. We started out upstairs in the winery, sampling a nice Pinot Noir. The restaurant calls the winery when they are ready to start the dinner, so we went down at 6:30. The evening starts with a nicely done tour of the facility, including the outside herb garden and the spice and condiment room. Blake did the tour and handled it very well - eloquent, funny, entertaining, a great preamble to the multi-course dinner. Maceo was our server and provided an overview of the evening. By pure coincidence, we were seated at the VIP table in front of the plating area. Initially, we thought we were being seated by the 'kitchen', which we always try to avoid. Little did we know what a show was ahead. If you come to eculent and can swing it, request this fascinating table! For us it was a two-top, but they can do four. We both chose the 1845 menu, a good mix of seafood and beef courses. It was a good choice for us. The evening starts out with a fun 'Amuse Box'. My wife pulled the top tie and the box flopped open on the table, the four sides dropping with a loud bang, eliciting a hearty yell. Fun. Inside, appetizers to start off the meal. This was followed by an excellent shrimp/chipotle grits dish with coconut chili, served with a nice Sauvignon Blanc. Before this course was served, we watched all the plates being assembled on the plating table. Next up, a Charred Tomato Soup with beef belly and charred onions, served with a cold barrel aged Chardonnay. Superb! Next, a short break for a palette-cleansing, liquid-nitrogen-frozen fruit puff, hard to explain but fun and very entertaining to watch being made. On to the main course, an excellent petite NY Strip steak, served with a small helping of sunchoke potatoes and sugar snap peas, very artfully plated and, again, fun to watch being assembled on the plating table. Yum! Served with a very good Merlot/Cab Franc/Syrah blend. Initially, you get the impression that the serving sizes are small, but by the end of the evening, we were very satisfied. Smart eating! The main was followed by what were essentially two dessert courses. The first, a merlot poached fruit plate with blue cheese foam and candied pecans, was very good. This was served with a nice sparkling Moscato. The second, a Tejas Bombe citrus cake with mocha ice cream. Wow, wow, wow! This was complemented by a Petite Syrah Port, perfect. Last, coffee and mignardises, basically fancy peanut brittle, all very good. We left after almost three hours, satisfied, entertained, very pleased. 15 course dinner at a small intimate restaurant that is part of Clear Creek Winery. Everyone seats at around 7pm for the 15 course dinner. Restaurant was ready to sit everyone at around 6:50pm though last night. You're taken on an adventure from their local garden and food lab. All the courses were very unique and tasty, and I'm told they change frequently. The wine is from Clear Creek Winery too. Glass of wine as $12 (very generous pour).
