I stopped by at 2:00 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon and Ebiko was entirely empty, and the fridge containing all the take-out sushi was fully stocked. If you're a sushi lover, you're going to exercise a lot of self-restraint: everything looks so good, you'll want to buy it all. My wife and I ended up picking up for items: a California roll, an eel roll, unagi nigiri, and aburi (flame seared) salmon nigiri. Between the two of us, this amount of sushi was perfect for lunch. Everything was also very reasonably priced as well. The fish all tasted really fresh, and the sushi rice is well-made. The unagi is on the saucy side, but that's exactly how I enjoy my unagi nigiri. Due to how popular Ebiko is, the rolls do not sit long in the fridge. The result of this is the sushi rice still tastes really fresh. Ebiko took my Friday from good to great! I had this place bookmarked, but it's just so unassuming, I never really had the urge to try it out. It's been left under my bookmark page for a while, but I think I came across Ebiko again while browsing a social platform, and someone mentioned that it was affordable and great quality. So when my partner mentioned wanting sushi takeout to enjoy at home, I thought 'why not give this place a try?'. The reviews looked great, the concept of the place seemed kind of unique, and the place looks cute. It's a little far out for takeout on the regular, and parking around Piedmont can be a hassle, but let me tell you, it was so worth the drive. Ebiko is pretty much sushi takeout with a handful of Asian snacks and goods, so most people who go there is there for the sushi. We pre-ordered the day before to make sure we're guaranteed every item we wanted, but you're free to select any available items with walk-ins. I have seen from reviews that if you go late, you might not have as big of a selection though. Between the two of us, we ordered one each of: Omakase Nigiri, Salmon Aburi, Unagi Nigiri, Hamachi Roll, Kaisen Don, and a Tsukemono. While there, we also picked up one pack of Inari, so in total about $80 worth of sushi. Our top two favorites were the Unagi Nigiri and Salmon Aburi. The Omakase was so delicious as well, but flavor wise, the Unagi Nigiri and Salmon Aburi takes the top for us. The Unagi Nigiri sauce was perfect. The Nigiri weren't drenched with sauce and the sauce isn't overwhelming. When you bite into it, it's just a perfect balance of fish, rice, and sauce (no sauce dripping out the side of your mouth kinda situation). I love Unagi, but never really order it because it just doesn't seem worth it at a sushi place. Afterall, it's not raw, fresh fish. But this one is a 10 out of 10, would recommend! The Salmon Aburi was our other favorite (my personal favorite)! It's charred on the top and has a nice smoky flavor, but the Salmon retains so much of it's moisture and has that melt-in-your-mouth feel to it as well. I like that they topped it off with some Tobiko to give it a subtle additional fresh feeling to the Nigiri. I would definitely order this one again next time I go. I think their Omakase menu may change every so often, and it's nice that they label what's included in the Omakase. For tonight, our Omakase included: Sake (Salmon) x 2, Amaki (Bluefin Tuna Top Loin), Otoro (Bluefin Tuna Belly), Hotate (Hokkaido Scallop), Chutoro (Medium Fatty Tuna), and Ikura (Salmon Roe). I think we got lucky in that they included some of our favorites tonight! The Hotate was one of the best Scallop we had around the Bay! So fresh, no fishiness. That goes for all the other Nigiri in this set, but we just love that one and the Ikura - always fun to eat. The Kaisen Don was also really good. It came with two slices of fresh sashimi (Sake, I believe), and about 1/3 of the box was real crab meat. It comes with some seaweed salad, and some Ikura. A good mix of things in one box. The Hamachi Roll and Inari made for great starters. They're also really good in their own way. I like that the Inari is just lightly sweetened and it's a comforting, small bite. If you're feeling for a really small bite, Hamachi Roll may be the way to go! The Tsukemono is the only thing I'm not sure I would get again. It's pickled veggies, and while I like that they included a small variety, some of these were too salty or too pickled for my taste. The best one is probably the yellow Daikon slices. Something else I'd like to mention here is that the sushi rice was made well! It's not sticky, clumpy or overcooked, and the vinegar is mild. This was sushi rice I actually quite enjoyed. Their ratio of fish to rice was perfect for all items! Not too much rice, and balances with the amount the fish slices. Their menu may be small, but I feel like they really perfected their items. I also like that there's nothing particularly fancy about these items. It's simple, well-made, and great quality. If you're feeling for some good sushi without the additional service cost and fancy setting, Ebiko may be the place to go! Now that I've got a taste of Ebiko, I know I'll definitely be coming back for more soon. read more

Ebiko is amazing! My husband and I really love Japan and are constantly thinking/planning a trip back. We work from home now and often take a stroll on piedmont ave to break up our work day and try and get some exercise in. We were overjoyed to see that Ebiko was right down the street from us and were also very surprised by all the fun snacks and treats from Japan they have available and in stock. There are delicious freshly made rolls, and a wonderful variety of savory and sweet snacks (I like the truffle chips & all the candies). My favorite thing was all the coffee and Japanese sodas they have *UCC coffee with Milk for me & my husband. The owner David is so knowledgable and kind and considerate! Such a cute shop for some delicious sushi! This place is takeout only, but they have so many different choices that resemble a regular sushi restaurant. I was especially drawn by the nigiri omakase option as it was only $17 which is really unheard of anywhere. Everything else also looked super tempting and I had such a hard time choosing! I opted for the nigiri combo and seared salmon aburi, both of which were fantastic. The fish was super fresh, and the rice was perfectly cooked as well. There was even a piece of otoro in the nigiri set which usually runs you at least $8 for one piece. The seared salmon was also super flavorful and the sear added such a nice touch. It's a small and efficient Japanese sushi/snack store. You pick up items that interest you and then head to the register. Pretty easy and fast. The sushi has really fresh fish that are similar to nice Japanese sushi restaurants. Some of the boxes include scallop and toro too. The only knock on the sushi is that the rice is cold since they put it in the fridge section. If you want bang for your buck and don't want to wait at a sushi restaurant, this is a great place for takeout. read more

If you're craving a sushi fix and you're on the go, stop in to this great little town go spot! They have a limited but very fresh selection, and they do an omakase every day. I tried the chu toro bowl and the fish was delicious and just the right amount of fattiness, the little dollop of ikura and the little flower on top was such a lovely presentation. I haven't been eating any fish lately, broke out and tried this place though. Wow...it was insanely good. This does not taste like it was in the fridge at all. Better than some of the sushi restaurants I've been to. It's a great little grab and go spot. I was blown away by how fresh everything was, the quality of seaweed, rice, and fish is amazing. The prices were not bad either. We got little mochi for free as a treat, very good. Overall: good for a quick bite, friendly, nostalgic of Japan, but ultimately not much cheaper than a restaurant and the sushi rice across the street at RnR is better in my opinion. I wondered if the sushi was made fresh and while I was browsing someone came out from the back to place new trays in the refrigerator. So that's a plus! Of course, it's also super convenient. My favorite part was the drinks case. It felt like being in Tokyo. Especially the canned suntory coffees and the sweat water! This place could get picked up and dropped in Japan and seem like it's not out of place. And of course, they are friendly. The flip side - as is also common in Tokyo, this place will generate a lot of plastic waste just by its takeout nature. And RnR sushi is just across the street if you have time to sit down. The fish was so tender and there was an excellent variety. I got seared salmon and the omakase and in both cases the quality of the fish was top notch. However, the rice left a little to be desired. Probably by virtue of it being a takeout spot, the rice was cold and has hardened a little bit by the time someone gets around to eating it. Price wise, slightly cheaper than takeout at other similar grade sushi spots. Last, no seating except for a small bench right outside. But just up the block at the corner of Linda and Piedmont ave are a few benches in a sunny spot. I think I would come back here at the very least to get one of those canned coffees! And it's a nice addition to the neighborhood for the many healthcare workers that frequent the area and may not have time to wait around at a restaurant. read more

Finally got a chance to stop here and it has totally lived up to the hype! I can see how ordering ahead would be beneficial--we did not, but I'll probably do that next time. We came in around 11:30 or so and grabbed a few boxes from the case: an omakase set, a tuna and avocado set, a spicy salmon set, and a California roll for my daugther. Everything was getting restocked constantly while we were there, and the fish was all super fresh. I had a craving for hotate and was so happy it was included in the omakase set. We found a bench outside and ate our food quickly. My toddler ate a bunch of her California rolls, so take that for what it's worth. I ate everything else, and I'm curious what else they offer! It smells delicious in there. While we were there, we also picked up some snacks from the little grocery aisle. Everyone was super helpful, the cashier was super nice and explained about the order pickups when I asked. We got the Kaisen party platter, which comes with rice and seaweed, and omakase nigiri, which comes with 7 pieces of nigiri sushi. The quality is actually really good for the price. The entire party platter was only $95 and it comes with amaebi (sweet shrimp), toro, scallop, salmon, ikura, real crab, and negitoro. Fish was fresh and nicely plated. Same thing with omakase nigiri - great for lunch if you don't want to be falling asleep in the afternoon with a food coma. I always get take out through Doordash but since my day was free, I thought I'd go in for a nice little lunch break. Prices are similar to Doordash, but the vibe is so awkward in there. It's a small space with no where to turn or sit and eat so it's a pretty intimate space. . I had a young Asian gentleman help me before and he was sweet, even offering a free sorbet because he got some samples he didn't have space to stock them and they were melting. At the end of the exchange, he recommend I go to an Asian market in San Mateo, which offers the same sushi bentos. Weird. . Today, I had a young YT passing lady help me and she was visibly not into me and was making my exchange as difficult as possible. From making me repeat myself every sentence, to visibly getting mad when I asked for a set of chopsticks and soy sauce. She even blamed me when I said their credit card tap system was not working properly and stared at me for 2 minutes straight without offering to help or adjust the register while I was like "umm... it's not... can you... it's still not... there's no...". I eventually took out my one Airpod because she was so annoyed with me so I thought I'd give her my undivided attention in case it was ME that was doing something? "Why don't you double tap your phone". Yeah, I know how my phone works thanks. She refreshed the transaction to prompt the tap feature, but her attitude made me not want to come back in person. Like I get you're not happy but why are you making that my problem? (8/8/24 12pm) . In fact, Ebiko raised their prices. It's just a small store, I've never physically been inside but have had delivery many many many times and the consistency and quality is just incredible. The salmon aburi (seared salmon) with roe and green onions is the item to get for a range of textures (crunchy, chewy, gooey) and flavors, most notably smoky. It's very satisfying. I've only been here twice, but due to its rarity at other sushi places of the same category (sans Mujiri on San Pablo), it will be difficult for me to get anything else other than this during future visits. read more
