Best Catering Experience. This year, I had to plan my company's 21st anniversary party. I literally looked up and found and communicated with EVERY caterer on this island. I am so happy I chose EAT HONOLULU The Good * Jocelyn was so EASY and FUN to work with, she was cooperative and creative with what I wanted for the party and even helped me out according to my tight budget * Not to forget to mention she's a certified wine sommelier - so she helped me alot with selecting the wines for the party * Both Jocelyn and Chef David were very knowledgable about their tastes and foods that when they'd tell me about the great options I couldn't help but get excited and pee a little in my pants because I LOVE FOOD! * On the night of the party, they showed up and prepared everything on time. I really didn't have to do anything that night which was surprising because I was expecting to actually WORK instead of enjoying the party. I GOT TO ENJOY THE PARTY! *Their whole staff was attentive, friendly, professional, and enjoyable. * This was an all-pupu party. *Beef tataki was hands-down my favorite *Caprese Crostini was so good too! Do you ever tell yourself not to do something bc you know better but then you find a way to do it anyway? Yep, that's the story of my TWO visits here! Lol So the story goes: I was checking out my Yeep-friends' reviews, check-ins, photos, and tips when I happened upon my fellow Yeep Cin T.'s reviews about this place called, "EAT"! Her amazing review is what pushed me over to go find this place! Thanks so much for your awesome meat-burger-filled review, Cin T.!!! OMGoodness for the aiyaiyai-YUM!!! :D I'm more of a lamb, turkey, fish, and veggie type of eater and it looked like I could make it work here :D The food selections and review descriptions most obviously intrigued me so I took a screen shot of the business page and general Yelp photos for a reminder of what's offered and decided to go in search of EAT next time I'm in town during the week day. First Visit - As good luck happened, they were still open at 1:30 p.m. (for some reason their Yelp page said they close at 2 but there I found out it's actually 3! Yay!) so I ventured a visit. I easily found parking conveniently in the GENTRY BUSINESS CENTER nka NA LIMA KUKUI lot where there are a lot of stalls, and walked right into the complex. EAT was easy to find right at the front as you enter the main open entrance area. I actually wanted to try the SURF N TURF with turkey patty substitute (for their yummy Kulana Beef) but they already had run out of turkey so I allowed myself to be swayed into trying their turkey club and then add a side of their soft shell crab. I placed my order with a side of SHOESTRING FRIES and a REFILLABLE BOTTOMLESS LEMONADE. The wait was pretty long but I guess they make it hot and fresh just like Jack (in-the-Box does) so it was absolutely worth the wait. TURKEY CLUB with SOFT SHELL CRAB SAND ($8.99 + $6.99 = $15.98!? crazy ugh) My concoction (bc I made it up the chef said!) was deeeeelicious! Needed to eat it with two hands to hold it all together! The great thing about it? Once I was done, the other half was ready to go! More Y-U-M! :D The turkey was soft, tasty deli meat. It's got nicely-seasoned good taste but just not my thing unless it's freshly-baked turkey meat. FRIES ($2.90) were ahhh just OK. I'm a major fries person (I'll eat them with chopsticks or fork if no chopsticks!) and there really needed to be more plus they really need to be cooked until crispy. Perhaps next time I'll remember to ask for extra crispy fries! .) LEMONADE ($2.75) Pleasant, fresh, delicious lemony taste! Worth it if it's endless refillable! Lemons are good for ya! :) Second Visit - I called 15 minutes ahead and ordered just the SOFT SHELL CRAB SANDWICH ($9.99) (with POLENTA FRIES, $3.75) bc again ...guess what? They ran out of fresh turkey burger patties! Wimper :( but oh well - There's always another lunch day, right!? :D Besides, this was a very good opportunity to try just the soft shell crab by itself (as Cin T. suggested). When I arrived after 20 minutes, it was just about ready to go and off I went headed to my work meeting! Awesome! Except for one thing! They forgot my polenta fries and I didn't have any time to wait! :/ You would think I'd learn my lesson by now, right?! Nope! Both visits the soft shell crab was so delicious - not oily but soft inside, a bit crunchy on the outside with the taste and feeling of comfort food when you're chewing it going down into the depths of your happy stomach lining...ahhhhh...! Located in Na Lama Kukui, formerly and better known as Gentry Design Center on Nimitz Highway. Park in one of many customer parking spaces in the front of the center, proceed past the guard and entryway and you'll find EAT on your left. The line to place an order moves at a snail's pace, and everything is made to order so you'll have to wait again for your food, so if you're in a rush or short on time, you're better off dining elsewhere. I had to try the soft shell crab sandwich that a lot of Yelpers have yelped about. It did not disappoint. The crab was crispy, sweet, and fried to perfection. I didn't get it with bacon or avocado, because I thought it automatically came with it. There is an extra charge to add those items, and I wasn't about to fork over more $ for those ad-ons since I already paid $10 for the sandwich. Everything is ala carte so you have to order fries separately. The shoestring fries are a good choice but the portion is a little small for $2.95. While I could have eaten one portion by myself, I shared with my dining mate because I was too cheap to spend $6 alone on simple shoestring fries. Once you're pau with your meal, you must take your dishes and trash to the bins and trashcan to the left of the restaurant. Tucked away at the Gentry Design Center on Nimitz this place is a hidden gem. There are no signs from the street to indicate its existence but the foodies go there in droves because the food is very good. The decor is simple with about six tables and a private room that sits about 10-12 people. The menu is a mixture of sandwiches, burgers, salads and pastas. But don't let the simplicity fool you because the Chef definitely knows his craft. The Chili Burger with Paniolo beef ranks right up there with any Burger on island. Thick fresh homemade burger patty with an out of this world chili. Big, juicy and messy just as a great burger should be. For you vegetarians, the Eat Your Vegi sandwich with grilled eggplant, zucchini and bell peppers, melted handmade mozzarella cheese, and house made arugula pesto will roll your eyes back in delicious ecstasy. The sandwich is done panini style then drizzled with balsamic vinegar on top. The Hawaiano Organic Pasta changes daily. On our visit, the Chef served the pasta with an arugula cream pesto sauce. So delicious. Creamy, nutty but not overly rich. Perfect with a side of garlic bread. The Vegetable soup was a bit heavy on the oregano. We sat in a private room in the back. The privacy was great but the room had a musty smell. Next time we would rather sit in the front area. Super friendly staff. Can bring your own alcohol. They have glassware to accommodate. My lunch pal and I were going somewhere else to dine when the new addition to our group pointed out that the chosen place was closed on Mondays. Quickly, I had to go to Plan B, ...and EAT was it! EAT? My friends texted...they had never heard of the place. I found out about it because I had seen other people checking in. Aha - you think that I'm not paying attention to your check-ins? But I really am! I have so many bookmarks...and the list keeps growing!! Anyway, we had difficulty finding EAT because the location was wrong in Google Maps. I hope I've adjusted the pin correctly by now... I had an idea of where it was since I had taken a real estate class in that building. However, the building had changed its name to Na Lama Kukui. It used to be the Gentry Pacific Design Center. It's located between KMart and City Mill on Nimitz Highway, across from the new Liliha Bakery. There's free parking! There's no air conditioning - but no need because there's good ventilation between the businesses. There are ceiling fans and a nice breeze. Just go up to the counter and order. They'll call your name when the food is ready. Two of my friends got the regular burgers. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the patty was! I got the Soft Shell Crab sandwich - it was boring in comparison to the Surf & Turf Burger!! This is THE winner! When I bit into that TALL creation, I had a hard time going back to my plain crab sandwich. OOH WEE! Who would have thought that hamburger and soft shell crab tastes so GREAT together? Add the toasted bun and special Chili Aioli sauce and you can't let go! WOW!!! After my friends left to do errands, I had returned to get the Pineapple Li Hing flavor Ono Pop - (don't tell them)! What an interesting restaurant name.........and where is this place located at? Pretty easy to find, it's just across the street from the Nimitz Zippy's.........and I think it's in the Na Lama Kukui buliding, formally known as the Gentry Design Center. There is lots of free parking in the private parking lot, and as you walk into the center, Eat is located near the entrance of the mall on your left side.........you can't miss it! Basically this restaurant is opened for breakfast & lunch.........they close early, so no dinner service here gang. The food here is top quality............I came here to try their soft shell crab sandwich, and my gf came her to eat her favorite modified Surf & Turf Burger. Instead of the Kulana beef, she likes the turkey burger with soft shell crab. Both sandwiches come a lot of veggies (see pic). On the side, she likes her Polenta Fries - extra crispy (sorry folks, don't know what that is), and a Lemonade to wash all of this down. I'm not very big on fries............so the sandwich was all I had, and I washed down my meal with a refreshing ice tea. What can I say about my sandwich? Delicious! I only wished I had more of it.......as the serving looked rather small. I loved the bun, as well as the soft shell crab, as the crab was so succulent and soft! (see pics) The drinks were all you can drink, as they had their own refillable fountain jugs by the counter. Please note..........this place does not have table service. How this place works is, you go to the counter to place your order of food, then you look for an open table to sit down. When the food is ready, they will call you, and you pick up your grub. They have a condiment bar, and you will have to pick up your own plastic eating utensils, as well as your own napkins..........a very simple set up. Finally got to try this place I had bookmarked for awhile. Stay on Nimitz Hwy and stay in your right hand lane. After you pass KMart, Look for a Sign saying "Na Lama Kukui" (old Gentry Pacific Design center) turn right into the parking lot. There's lots of parking here, just walk in the main entrance and its right there you cant miss it. There's a few tables to eat at. I wasn't in the mood for the soft shell crab sandwich that everyone raving about but I definitely wanted a Turkey Club Sandwich. Very Good and Tasty Sandwich what made it stand out is that their bacon is Amazing its glazed in something and isn't your typical skimpy type you buy in stores, its high end bacon. I was invited to a dinner at their EATnPrivate concept where a party of up to 14 guests can enjoy a private meal created by Executive Chef David Passanisi and Team Eat. EatnPrivate features Hawaiian Regional Cuisine and supports local Island ranchers, farmers and fishermen. The dinner was amazing and I enjoyed each gourmet creation. I especially liked how the sauces complemented the main ingredient of each course resulting in a beautiful meshing of flavors. The private room is casual and makes for a super fun time. I was so anxious to write this review because I wanted everyone to know how much I enjoyed my BLT! We bought sandwiches for a lunch meeting, and decided to treat ourselves to EAT Honolulu, there was 6 of us, and we all opted to get the BLT. Some ordered with pickles or avocado or both, I got mine without either. So were suppose to talk and eat as we usually do with during our Thursday lunch meetings. But today, nobody was talking, just eating because we were all enjoying our sandwich, it was so good, our conference room was so quiet. The bread was perfectly toasted, with the right amount of mayo, not overly dressed. The lettuce was crunchy, tomato was fresh, and the BACON! Thick cut with lots of it, sweet and meaty, so easy to bite into and cooked just the way I like it. I never tasted bacon like this before, and didn't want to waste a crumb of it. After I ate my sandwich, my co-workers caught me nibbling on the small bacon pieces that crumbled off my sandwich and asked if I was still hungry?, actually the sandwich is a good size, and no I wasn't hungry, thank you. Saw this place on a recent Yelp email featuring BURGERS. It was the only one that I had not tried and boy do I like BURGERS. Tucked away in what I remember as being a Gentry home improvement center. The center is now called "Na Lama Kukui" just off of Nimitz Hwy between Kmart and City Mill with lots of free parking in front. I ordered the Classic Burger combo (comes with drink, Polenta Fries and Pickled Vegetables) I added avocado (because I always do) and Provolone Cheese. It also comes with homemade sesame seed bun and homemade ketchup. Grass fed local beef is always good too. The order took a while (10mins) but, I don't mind waiting because I know its being made to order. The burger was delicious. Id go back and order it again but, next time with a side order of Potato Salad (because I usually do). I do wish the burger was a little bigger but all in all it was a great EATing experience. Eat Honolulu is a hidden gem in Na Lama Kukui off of Nimitz. The cafe is a relaxed, open air space in the main corridor serving breakfast and lunch, plus they do catering. They've got sugar-spiced bacon, forbidden rice, organic pasta, fish sandwiches, salads and burgers made with grass-fed beef. I tried the Soft-Shell Crab Sandwich with Avocado and Polenta Fries. The sandwich was served on a hearty sweet roll with lettuce and tomato. The crab was hot, lightly crispy and juicy; it was a multiple napkin sandwich in a really good way! The Polenta Fries were thick cut sticks of polenta, fried and served with Aioli. When they were hot they had a nice crispy outside texture and were mild in flavor. Whoever had the idea to top a burger with avocado and a fried (WHOLE!) soft shell crab is a GENIUS. It's like they're soul mates and you should never eat them apart ever again. Every time I go (which is each time I visit Honolulu), there is plenty of seating. Which brings me to my next point. They are only open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm so I'm guessing the bulk of their clientele are just people who are lucky enough to work in that vicinity. That's fine by me! Keeps the hoards of tourists away (even though I am one myself!) Surprisingly, none of the other diners around me seem to be ordering the Surf & Turf burger. (And yes, I'm nosy and I like to see what other people are eating.) I've tried the polenta fries before and they are a tad too mealy for my taste. I haven't tried any of their other menu items aside from that, but I'm sure they are good. But for me, the Surf & Turf is just too good to pass up. And at $11.99, it's a steal. Or you can head up to the Burger King on the second floor and get yourself a whopper (kidding). When ordering the burger, I would order it one or two steps up from how you actually like it. We asked for a medium but it tasted well done. I normally loathe well done beef but the crab made the burger passable this time. The great thing about this burger is that it's big enough to share, but small enough to finish on your own. (does that even make sense?) I usually get my own since I'm a fatass. This was my first experience at EAT! I have never been here before. I honestly never thought there was a place to dine in the "Na Lama Kukui" (formerly known as the Gentry Business Design Center). It is a charming place, located in the courtyard of the center! EAT is a nice getaway for a quiet lunch, or just to meet someone for some quiet, peaceful alone time. The people here are very friendly and down to earth! My first experience here was the surf n turf with fresh turkey patty (instead of beef), with the Polenta fries extra crispy! Another great place close to my office to pick up breakfast or lunch. Located inside the Gentry Pacific Design Center with lots of free parking, it's a convenient location with good food. There is also a side room that we've used for team lunches and meetings. Food: I normally get the vege burger which is pretty good for those that are meat free. Some folks are big fans of their polenta fries, I usually get them with my burger but to me they don't have a whole lot of flavor on their own. This past visit they were out of the vege burgers so I ordered the sirloin salad. Nice pieces of tender steak cooked medium rare over a bed of greens and sprinkled with a generous portion of bleu cheese crumbles. Other popular items with coworkers have been the Surf and Turf Burger, Turkey Cream Cheese (this sandwich is excellent), and Tacos. Every item I've ordered in the past have always been delish. Service: They tend to take a little longer so some times the line can back up and take awhile. You can call ahead to place an order if you're short on time or ordering it to go. Atmosphere: Order at the counter and find a seat, nothing special but nice enough. They have a fair number of tables and seats so we've never had an issue finding a place to sit. My friends and I decided to try something different, so we decided to drive to Eat Honolulu, which is in the Gentry Pacific Design Center, right across from Sam Choy's Restaurant on Nimitz. I would have not known about this place since it's a hole in the wall that's not visible, but the food is definitely different, and somewhere to go if you feel like eating healthy, especially since they serve grass fed and free range beef, and organic burgers. Eat Honolulu is only open from 9:30am - 3pm. Veggie Burger - 4 stars - I didn't want to have a heavy meal and eat meat, so since they make their own veggie burgers with Organic Oahu Portobello, I decided to give it a try for $6.99, and it's not one of those processed veggie burgers. The burger was very soft, and combined with their red wine ketchup and sweet home made sesame bun, it was a delightful, and not too heavy or oily lunch for me. They also serve red onions and their sweet EAT pickles on the side, which I realized after I ate my burger that if I added it in the burger, it would have made it much tastier than it already was. I really liked this burger because it was light, flavorful and left a nice non-greasy taste in my mouth and stomach. Polenta Fries - 4 stars - for $3.69 as a side, something really different to try. Didn't have much flavor except for a light cornmeal taste and a spicy kick, but I didn't care for the sauce that came with it, which reminded me of thousand island dressing. If it was made of potato, I'd surely use ketchup, but not sure what other type of other sauce to dip it in since it is cornmeal. It was something authentic compared to other burger places. Service - 3 stars - the cashier (though, after I left, she looked like someone I knew, but she didn't acknowledge me, so I don't think I knew her) was pleasant and nice, but a little dizzy and acted a bit nervous, but paid much attention to me and got my order right. After done eating, they have bins on top of the trash can with a sign to direct customers to put their plates in the bin, basket on the side, and paper trash in the trash can. A convenient place to eat for lunch that's not heart-clogging and different with lots of parking, but when I asked about the burger combo (side and a drink for $11.99), if you usually don't order drinks, they have a water dispenser with lemon, and another deal (which I didn't notice until I read the menu again after lunch) to make it a plate for $4.99 more for two sides with your sandwich or burger (so Iost out on that deal since I ordered the fries itself for $3.69). The place is quaint and not too crowded with lots of tables since it's hidden in the building. Whenever I EAT there, I am reminded of what I think EAT stands for: E = Excellent A = And T = Tasty Yep, EAT has excellent and tasty food. I have frequented EAT as early as 2009 and their food has been typically good and consistent. They place more emphasis on gourmet, healthy food with the use of organic and local ingredients (as much as they can). It is cool they've a nice set up for patrons: an indoor patio with al fresco dining-style tables. It comes in real handy, especially on a rainy day. It is also a useful spot for lunch if you're looking for place with easy parking. Many luncheons I have enjoyed here throughout the years and EAT doesn't disappoints whenever I feel there's a need for me to EAT healthy meals. EAT is one of the few places I like ordering the fish burgers since they're mindful of not overcooking it. The fish filet is also not overdressed but simple and tenderly grilled. Tartar sauce add that nice zing to the tender fish meat. Salads are fresh and delicious here. Couscous and quinoa salads are quite flavorful and I usually order the salads if I end up eating a later lunch at EAT. Their most famous item on the menu has to be the soft shell crab sandwich. At first bite, it is great and I couldn't keep EATing it fast enough and then realized I ate the entire sandwich in less than a few minutes! Let's just say the servings are not too large. After several sandwich episodes later, I'm starting to find the soft shell crab a little too oily so now I reserve this sandwich for when I want to pig out once in a blue moon. The burgers are equally popular here too! They are tasty and juicy but messy to eat. The use of local grass-fed beef makes this a healthier option for those of us who wants to consume fresh meat not laden with antibiotics or hormones. It's cool the burgers are made to order and it costs extra if you want cheese. Kind of weird huh? A good burger has to stand up to the tenderness test, so medium rare is the way I like to order mine. EAT's pickled vegetables come with your burgers but I find them weird since I don't think these sides go well with burgers. However, I do enjoy the traditional pickles with my "free range walking" beef burgers. Or you can have the best of both worlds and order the Surf & Turf combo: soft shell crab on top of the beef patty! Yikes! Life is really good. Since this part of the Nimitz area tends to be more congested, parking can be trying at times but its location in the Pacific Gentry Center (now renamed Na Lama Kukui) offers a reprieve: a big parking lot. When I first found EAT, I immediately thought it reminded me of many of the small cafe eateries I used to visit in Napa Valley when I used to live there. The owners started out as one private chef to a Hawaii Loa Ridge household and one Sommelier from Boston. Together, they opened up EAT as a unique restaurant with a focus on Fresh, Seasonal Ingredients with Local, Sustainable Sourcing. As such, their menu changes every season. They're constantly on the lookout for the best local farms and producers to source from, so they have the best of the season to serve, and it shows. Not only in the quality of the food, but in the quality of the whole operation -- when you have a philosophy of not just being "good enough", but doing it RIGHT, every time, it shows. EAT's operation is only partially the cafe you see when you visit and eat there. A lot of their business is in private events, catering and special dinners. This is one of the things I love the most about EAT -- they have a small, private dining room that seats 14, and they will hold dinners that you can RSVP for prix fixe, Omakase style. Coming soon (as of this review on 3 April 2012) are a dinner based on Snout-to-Tail cooking, as they bring in an $1800 top-quality local hog to prepare for their dinner guests, another based around garlic, and seasonal deconstrucitons with 24 courses to taste. You can also make reservations to have private dinners there, with a minimum of $500+ food; and you can work with the chef and sommelier directly to come up with a perfect menu. Best yet, Jocelyn, who is one of the owners and the Sommelier, can help you pair and select wines for your meal, which you can buy yourself outside to save money and bring BYOB to EAT to drink with no corkage fee. These guys love food, love to share the love for it, and it shows. Now, here's what you need to know about EAT: Parking: Lots of it and free. EAT is located in the Gentry Pacific Design Center near/ across the street from Sam Choy's BLC. Bottom floor, you'll see it. Food: EAT's food is light, healthy, delicious, full of flavor and fresh -- just like cafes in Napa Valley who source their ingredients from farms and producers just down the street who share the same attention to quality. Even more interesting, EAT does vegetarian versions of every dish on the menu. This visit, I had the Surf & Turf Burger. To start, the bun is made in-house. It's buttered and grilled then topped with a housemade chili aioli or red wine ketchup. The beef is sourced from a farm on Kauai, ground fresh in-house, cooked medium. This is topped with avocado, red onion, tomato, and then finally with a perfectly crisp and juicy deep-fried soft-shell crab. I had the "make it a plate" option with the Polenta Fries (polenta cakes cut into fries and then fried) and Couscous Salad, both of which are delicious and among my regular favorites. The burger also comes with some of the highest-quality housemade pickles, pickled daikon and pickled onion I've had in my life. (see attached photos) EAT has the cooking philosophy of slow-cooking and doing it right. You can tell when you get your food. Instead of getting something that looks nothing like what you see in magazine photos, you get exactly what you saw for the magazine photo shoot, every time. Great care is put into preparing everything that is served to you. As such, they are not fast. But that's a good thing sometimes. And this is one of those times. Also, they serve Otto Cheesecake. And are BYOB. Win. Ordering: To keep their prices down for the quality of food they serve, EAT is counter service. It takes a while (see above), around 20 mins or so. Seating: Seating space for about 50, including tables of 2, 4, 6, and a bar. Free Wi-Fi. Service: There really isn't service beyond ordering and talking to the staff. They are friendly and knowledgeable. Decor: Like a cafe in Napa Valley. Cost: Starts at about $7 for a burger or sandwich, with other toppings additional, entrees at about $10. Sometimes when you eat somewhere, you just know they understand what Food Love is. Its similar to when you've been truly, deeply and intimately in love with a woman for years and when you talk about her, you just can't keep your enthusiasm from bubbling over, as if your love is renewed fresh and sustained every season. EAT Honolulu has it all going on, except good value. The food is really really good. I love the vibe of the place. Parking is never an issue. The folks at the counter are friendly and efficient enough. However... Today for lunch I ordered the Soft Shell Crab Sandwich w/ Chili Aioli and an iced tea. The bill came to $11. As I waited for them to call my name and number, I wondered what sides came with my sandwich. I hadn't noticed. So I picked up the menu to see: None. No less than five times on their new menu, they offer to "Make it a plate @just $4.99 more: Just pick two sides." If I had chosen to take them up on that offer, my "plate" lunch would have cost me $16. That's too much. As it was, I really enjoyed the sandwich, but it wasn't enough, and I left still a little hungry. I realize it might seem like a contradiction to rant about the value while giving Eat Honolulu 4-stars. In spite of the perceived poor value, I really enjoy my infrequent lunches there. On the most recent visit to EAT HONOLULU, I tried the fish special of the day, which was Elepe (swordfish) on a bed of Gemelli pasta with a "Red" Sauce. That sauce actually being a combination of a ragu and pesto. The pasta was also tossed with brocolli and topped with melted fresh grated parmesan. And? EXCELLENT! The swordfish was seasoned and grilled to perfection, retaining as much moisture as a lean cut of fish such as that could pull off. While the seared grill markings gave it that desirable charred and smokey flavor accent. They also put the perfect amount of kosher salt and fresh cracked black on it and that's it, letting the flavor of the Elepe shine through most. Just simply, a perfectly executed cut of grilled fish. The sauce was also STELLAR. Not too complex, yet retaining enough depth to know lots of heart went into it. The broccoli was a little undercooked, yet still, it was a welcome earthy contrast to the starchiness of the pasta; the latter of which was cooked to al dente perfection. This grilled fish 'n pasta dish ran $15, and was worth every penny! I'd order it again and again! I also got to try a bite of my table mate's "Surf 'n Turf", which is their Kulana Farms (Big Island) all-beef burger combined with a WHOLE crispy battered soft shell crab, and WOW, man is that Kulana Farms beef AWESOME! You can really taste the freshness, along with the juiciness and BEEFINESS! That burger just screams, "I'm the best dang burger you will ever wrap your lips and tongue around!". While I thought the Soft Shell Crab was a bit overkill, with too much going on, still, the combination of the unmistakable crab flavor along the beefy-beefy beef patty worked very nicely together. It was certainly as "Surf 'n Turf" as the proverbial name gets. I think what really glued this one together was teh Avocado. "Money" right there! When I can "afford it" (health-wise), I'll certainly return to EAT HONOLULU just for a burger, opting to top it with my favorite swiss 'n 'shrooms (the king of all burger toppings, IMO). My other table mate ordered the 808 Reuben, another special of the month, and really enjoyed it, only complaining there wasn't enough pastrami in it. I mean, he was expecting it stacked like a New York Deli, however it turned out looking like a plain 'ole roast beef sandwich. Still, with what it was, it rocked his world. Also rocking his world was Eat's Chicken Mushroom Paella Soup to accompany the sandwich, which he described as tasting like a "Haole Jook". Hey, that works! Not from this visit, but from a previous one, and related to the Reuben, the Polenta Fries are certainly "interesting", texturally speaking, as expected. Think steak-cut fries, albeit with a more mealy, corn-like or rice-like flavor and texture profile, vs. potato, is the best way to describe it. Never-the-less, really ono! Eat's Polenta Fries for the win! Definitely order that with whatever sandwich or burger you choose, at least to try it. Good stuff! Finally, another one of my table mates tried the Kulana Farms Beef "Steak" plate, which is essentially a gourmet twist on the classic hamburger steak plate. It's described as being in a "Soy & Ginger Glaze", which he described as being "light", yet totally working as substitute for the traditional, much richer brown gravy. He also raved about the accompanying purple-colored "Forbidden Rice", likening it as the haole version of his favorite Sekihan rice. And of course, that Kulana Farms all-beef patty, grilled to juicy perfection. Huge thumbs-up for this dish! I work in the area, so I've seen this place grow up. This review is for the 2011 menu. Smoked ahi spread sandwich-I was addicted for about 6 weeks! It's simple, but a great combination of the ahi spread, radishes, and a tosted multigrain bread. I think it's the toasted bread that does it! The tacos are also delicious, and a good value. Soft corn tortillas, fresh fillings. Cuban - good and greasy. Not as flavorful as some cubans I've had, but not a bad choice. Reuben - classic. Sugar & Spice Bacon burger - it was delicious except the edges of the bacon were burnt. I just picked off the edges and enjoyed the rest. I reccommend getting their soup of the day - they have never disappointed, and I must have had about 10 varieties. The chef seems to enjoy creating new ones. Today I had the Southwest Chili and it had large chunks of steak with fresh corn. Pleasantly spicey! The soft shell crab sandwich is good. It's one large crab with a nice aioli on a soft bun. If you're the type of person that LOVES soft shell crab, you will enjoy this. The service is much improved in terms of speed and prioritizing orders. The cashier knows me by name, which is a nice friendly touch. I also appreciated how hard the chef's wife works explaining the menu and offering suggestions. Since I see that the owners read these reviews - here are some suggestions: 1. Offer at least one "better" breakfast dish, like a quiche or an omelette, or better yet, biscuits and gravy! I would love to eat here for breakfast, but I can get eggs at Zippy's. I bet you would make a KILLER breakfast gravy. 2. Do a beer tasting dinner! There's a pretty loyal following for Andy Baker who does beer tastings at Bar35 on Wednesdays and does dinner pairings at several local restaurants. 3. Caesar Salad was very good followed by a nice Pasta with loads of fresh ingredients, then came the Chicken Taco which is one of the best Taco's you'll have in Honolulu. Next the Pulled Pork Cuban Sandwich which was really good. My other co-worker said he didn't like the texture of the burger - too crumbly and that there was too much ketchup. Another thing I noticed was that his tomato was still unripe. Random lunch call from Tim P., we cruise around town finding a place that neither of us have tried, yet heard about. Out of spontaneous epiphanies, Tim exclaims, 'EAT' and we set fourth... to an unlikely location sandwiched between a questionable K-mart and soon-to-be-Lowes. The concept, although simple, is a collection of pretty interesting flavors assembled in a tasty package. I, on one hand, enjoyed my meal; Tim though... may have struggled to find bliss in his simple dishes. The GOOD: I ordered something that was simple and common. Maybe not common to this island, but something that is simple enough that even anyone can do it from home - so why don't we? Because its flavors are so complex, many people are failures at combining ingredients to form anything more difficult that a PB&J. At Eat I ordered a Cuban (no, not a cigar) a Latin Panini if you will. First they take two kinds of the same animal, Ham and Kahlua Pork then add an uncommon cheese, Swiss, and finally invite Pickles to the party and BAM - grill it and you have a sandwich that's good enough for the Commies, and that's good eats to me without all that government involvement. Tim P. ordered a mixed bag of edible goodness... unfortunately, he wasn't as satisfied as me, I think. The BAD: not much bad for me in the taste factor, it took them long to make it, which I understand they are 'busy' and such, but it's a pretty simple sandwich that gets grilled in a George Foreman. Another downer is it's location. It is tucked in the Gentry Pacific Design Center which is pretty much furniture and interior design accessories. No real reason for anyone normal to be in the area, but a good find when you locate it. With all the good reviews here, I was excited to try this place. I got myself a veggie panini and the polenta fries. The veggie panini was very crispy! I loved it. However, it was very oily, the red bell pepper was too soft and the eggplant was too hard. The pesto flavor didn't give me much excitement either. What I did like was the polenta fries. I LOVE EAT. Had I known this delicious little lunch spot was tucked away inside the Gentry Pacific Design Center earlier... Wow, would I be in trouble. I've been to a couple off-site lunches here, and the food has never disappointed! My co-worker and I always split two dishes so we can try more things -- a practice I highly recommend. We both loved EAT's BLT ($9.25). The special sugar spice bacon really makes it, as it's thick, crunchy, and very flavorful. If you're a grilled cheese fan like me, you'll also love the Say Cheese ($7.25). We added bacon to this too, but it's just as good without it. If burgers are more your thing, try making it a combo -- that way you can get a drink AND try their famous polenta fries, all for $14. I personally get tired of the taste and texture of the polenta fries, but many of my co-workers swear by them. In my opinion, the side you *can't* leave without trying are their handmade mozzarella sticks ($4.99, 3 pcs per order). It's truly heaven on a plate. One thing I wouldn't recommend is their lemonade, which has been on the watery side both times I ordered it. EATnPrivate: You can book this private (AIR CONDITIONED!) dining space and put in your lunch orders ahead of time so all you have to do is show up! The room seats 14 people, so it's a great, intimate place to treat your department to lunch. This visit was my first eating here and my husbands second visit, previously, I had tried their coffee months ago and thought it was excellent, my husband had their cheeseburger 2 weeks ago and had to come back for more. My husband always gets Medium rare done to perfection, juicy and moist. He said the burger is the best he has had anywhere on Island, although they're a little pricey well worth it! Polenta Fries -- these come with the meal -- First time ever for any of us to have polenta fries, I thought they were good, my husband didn't care for them nor my son, but none of us have ever had polenta to begin with. However, they were crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. PS. We had tried another establishment this last weekend looking for a good cheeseburger and it didn't even compare so, if you're in the neighborhood or just on a venture to find good food, stop on in and give them a try. I went seeking a mouthgasm and walked out with the oral equivalent of blue balls. Blue lips? I tried the Surf n Turf burger and it was a let down. I really really wanted to like it and maybe I shouldn't have had such high hopes. The top part of the bun was hard and cold and rock like. So much bread!!! Maybe they rooked out and didn't heat it up properly, but it was bad. The soft shell crab skeeved me out. It tasted fishy and almost kind of dirty. I had a few bites and pushed it aside. The burger has little seasoning (if any) and the meat was packed so tight it was almost like a hockey puck. The veggies and aioli were good but if that's the best part of a burger there's something wrong. The kicker is the price tag- $14 for just the burger; no fries. If you charge that much, and include those ingredients, it should be a sure bet that it's the bomb but it just wasn't. The woman working the register seemed really irritated and unhappy. Idk what was wrong but the bad vibes were thick. The seating area and tables are nice and clean and they have condiments galore (bonus points from me for that every time). Good music and smells were coming out of the kitchen. The parking area is HUGE and free. Bonus points for that, always. Despite the surf n turf "wipeout" I do want to go back and try something else. I'm not sure where to park because I usually just walk from work, but if anything the Dole Cannery parking lot is right next door. The restaurant itself is very charming. It's set up like it would be at one of those outside seating cafes (minus the umbrellas since it's indoors). All the food seems very quality with unique ingredients and taste. My only disappointment is the selection of dishes. I'm (sometimes) a picky eater so there's not many options I think I would enjoy. And on to the chocolate bacon.... In all honesty, I think this is overrated. I think it's $2-3 per piece of bacon and must be preordered 48 hours in advance. A little inconvenient for my lifestyle, but my coworkers love these! It was really good! We went on a Tuesday around 2pm. There wasn't a crowd, because it was later in the day and they close at 3. The food took about 15 min to cook, but worth the wait. We both ordered classic burgers and my hubby added egg, bacon, and avocado to his. Both meals cost $32, which is a bit much, but they were tasty. The polenta fries were different, I liked them with the sauce they have but hubby wasn't a big fan, they tasted like batter to him. This place isn't too hard to find, if you plug it into your GPS, but you can easily pass it then need to drive around until you get back to it. I had the burger, which was delicious, and the polenta fries. The fries were nice to try, but I don't think I would order that again, I'd settle for traditional fries. read more

What a pleasant surprise! A hidden treasure! We visited Indich Collection off of Nimitz & we're thinking about lunch. When we came out of the store we picked up on some yummy food aromas. We peeked around the corner & found Eat Honolulu and decided to try it out. What a refreshing restaurant! The food was fresh, unique & so ono! A little on the pricey side, but it was really good.
