If this is the same truck at the June Eat the Street, they offered a sampler of thai dishes for $5. All of the dishes looked good, but I decided to eat healthy last night: Thai beef salad sampler - 4 stars - It was a very healthy meal with thin strips of meat with fresh watercress, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, etc. Their thai dressing was very sweet and flavorful. I'd order this again because of the variety and freshness of their vegetables. The only gripe I have is that as you can see in my photo, their board says all dishes are $5. When I gave him a $10, he gave me $4 back. This time I was aware of trucks ripping you off, so then I questioned him about all his items were $5, he then said "oh, yeah" and gave me another dollar. read more

Why do I love Michi's fresh food you ask? Well it's not like greasy fast that just fills you up, it's actually really fresh food every time. It won't leave you with the guilt and sluggish feel that most fast food places tend to do. For the food quality and quantity this is a great deal! Not to mention it's located in Honolulu. For now the company is contracted within Honolulu Community College campus in the newly renovated cafeteria. There's always a line around lunch hour but the name of the game is fast and friendly service. My favorite plate is the pan seared basil steak with miso dressing on a tossed salad. (You can opt for mac salad instead). The steak is tender, juicy, delicious and typically cooked medium to medium well. There is also the option to get brown or white rice. The brown rice is good here, not hard and dry like some places. When I'm in a hurry I'll stop by at the cashier and buy the spam musubi which always satisfies. I highly recommend the chocolate chip mochi cake. It's not exactly mochi, not cake, yet not a chocolate chip cookie it's the perfect combination concept that will satisfy and delight the chocoholic in you. :) PS If you see the new Thai mochi cake, GET IT! Michi's is a great option if you need a "take-out" option to feed your family or a group. The food varies and the menu is available on-line so you can see what's coming up. Each one usually serves 4-6 people and is priced accordingly (mains are around $45 I think) and there's an option to add on a salad or other sides. Overall my opinion is that it's a mixed bag that some dishes are better than others. There's nothing that I think is absolutely horrible and everything is supposed to be cooked fresh and fairly healthy. The ones I liked less were the shortrib because it could have used some sauce (ok maybe that's why it was healthier because it didn't come oozing in oily sauce) and the stuffed pork was a little sweeter than I like. The mexican soup was really good, the stuffed chicken was probably my favorite, and the others like the pulled pork are good but just sort of good but not out of this world. Overall, if her food really is healthy then it's totally amazing because it's flavorful and enjoyable. Serving a variety of great dishes I love the Buddha Bowl which sells out fast once it arrives. Great salads with awesome dressing Michi knows how to create. Tasty Sanwhiches wonderful sauces. I really wish she had a full restaurant with consistency in supply. I think during this COVID environment it should remain the way it is but once it's hopefully over michi should go big alowing consistency of product and availability. Is ther other outlets? I was surprised to find this lunch wagon sitting in the normal spot that the Golden River Catering lunch wagon has parked in for years at UH Manoa. Out of curiosity and hunger, I decided to give it a try. I paid about $9.50 for a combo plate of the "Teriyaki Chicken w/pineapple salsa ~ boneless, skinless chicken" and the "Seared Sirloin Steak ~ w/basil butter or thai sauce". I'm sorry to say, but I was really, really disappointed with the plate I got. The teriyaki chicken was okay, but I just expected more flavor considering that the "pineapple salsa" sounds so exotic. It really fell short for me. It just tasted so---blah. As for the "seared sirloin steak w/basil butter or thai sauce".... When I think of sear, I think of more of a flash fry in the pain where they get the outside of the steak cooked quickly, while the inside remains at least a medium-rare. What I got was steak that was dry and completely overdone. Definitely NOT a sear. Also, I didn't get a a choice of basil butter or thai sauce. Maybe that would have made the steak a little better. For the price of $9.50, I wanted more. I ended up throwing out half of my plate. If I do return, I'll definitely try something else and not the chicken or the steak. The service was also extremely slow. I was only 2rd in line to order and I ended up waiting about 20 minutes for my plate in the hot sun. It just wasn't worth the wait. I really love the concept of this wagon and I'm all about eating healthy, but I think there's definitely room for improvement considering the price. read more

With this being located in a medical facility with sick people around you would think they would be more friendly and understanding. I wasn't all there today when ordering a coffee and some food and misunderstood what the guy was asking. When I corrected him and asked to also get a coffee he made rude comments like "so when I told you what size you wanted...". And later making comments like "wow...". I asked for the coffee in a nice way knowing that misunderstood what he was asking. I used to be a fan of Michi's (see the pics I've uploaded) but not anymore. In the beginning when they first arrived at UH Manoa, the food they served was good and they would try out different items. However, as time went on and since they have expanded, the quality in their food has gotten worse. This is evident in the presentation. They are also skimpier on the portions as the same plate I used to order does not weigh the same now and the quality has really gone down (the salad looks terrible now and looks like it was haphazardly "tossed"). For the same price now I'd rather go some place else. The Hawaiian BBQ chicken that I've had there recently was utterly disappointing and downright terrible. There was nothing Hawaiian nor BBQ about it and it was akin to the chicken they serve in school cafeterias. That's really what Michi's has come down to... cafeteria food..and in that case I'd rather eat elsewhere on campus such as Simply Ono which is comparable in price and also has huge portions. They take credit card - which is immediate bonus points, especially for a lunch truck. Consistently here everyday - when school is in session - so its dependable. Menu was scattered - vegetarian options available and the plate lunches came with a pineapple and orange slice which was a nice touch. Gumbo - good amount of sausage, shrimp and chicken, was spicy from the sausage, but bland otherwise. Wasn't fulfilling on the taste buds. Turkey meatloaf looked alright. Salads were kind of sad. This review is specifically for the Cooking Fresh for You food truck on the UH Manoa campus, which is, in my opinion, the best food truck on campus! Located by the Kennedy Theater on East-West road, Cooking Fresh offers a lot of different healthy options for lunch at very reasonable prices. The menu varies day by day, but usually they offer a variety of different proteins (steak/beef, chicken, pork or fish) that can either be ordered as a mini or regular, and come with brown rice and a tossed salad. They even offer a tofu option instead (usually in place of chicken), for those who prefer to eat a little healthier or vegetarian. The plate lunches are incredibly reasonable ranging from $6 to $10 a plate, depending on what you order. The portions are also very generous and perfect for lunch, and they also accept credit card too for those who don't carry cash. My "usual" is the Thai Green Curry with chicken which is SO tasty; the workers are so great too that they even cut up the chicken into tiny bite sized pieces to accommodate my current dental situation (teeth extractions & braces). I've also had the steak, lasagna, and turkey meatloaf which are all great. Also two words: volcano sauce. If you love spicy sauce it will change your life! The only downsides to Cooking Fresh is during the school year the wait in line can be pretty long (up to maybe 15-20 minutes in the line alone, not including waiting for food) during the busy lunch hour and they also usually run out of food about a half hour before closing.. So I would recommend going early (they're open from 10am-2pm) if you want a short line and options. With that said, Cooking Fresh is great: great food, great workers and great service! A total bang for your buck. If you're on the Manoa campus for lunch I would definitely stop by.. And don't forget the volcano sauce. :) read more

Consistent menu offerings have been the sliders and quinoa salad. In addition to her truck, she cooks out of Star of the Sea School and offers healthy catering options as well. I've tried sirloin steak with pesto sauce, chili..All tasty without leaving that feeling of thirst after (which occurs with too much seasoning or salt) Makes you feel like you're getting a well-rounded, satisfying meal without too much of the guilt. I had the Thai Beef Salad ($6): this salad included Romaine lettuce, cabbage, tomato, and thinly sliced steak, with a side of cilantro-lime dressing. In all, there were "11 ingredients of love!" I enjoyed the refreshing vegetables and succulent, juicy beef. Tons of color here livened the dish up! The cilantro-lime dressing had a bit of sweetness and some tang, electrifying the palate. The beef was cooked around medium-rare to medium. My mom, who generally prefers her meat well-done, raved about this dish without complaint, so you know this has to be an amazing dish. Other dishes include the Tex Mex Quinoa Salad with Tomato-Basil Dressing, "Asian Persuasion" nachos, and a sirloin steak plate. Michi's is one of those lunch trucks that may not be among the most popular on the block, but it definitely offers a unique lunch option that is genuinely refreshing and something different than the other trucks that are out there. The menu features healthier plate lunch options as well as salads which is a nice guilt-free option that is a pleasant change. Plate lunches feature brown rice and toss salad versus the conventional white rice and macaroni salad. The sirloin with basil butter sauce was nice and refreshing with a decently cooked sirloin that while on the leaner side was still pretty tender and the basil butter sauce a very refreshing flavor. The Thai beef salad has quickly become one of my favorite items on their menu. Its incredibly refreshing on a hot day with watercress and salad topped with vegetables and a very flavorful, but not spicy, beef slices. The dressing was on the sweeter side, but offered a bold flavor so be careful with how much you place on you salad as you mix it. Prices are pretty reasonable with items being under $10 and easy to get a lunch for under that. Might seem high to some, but when plate lunches are in that range and you consider that Michi's items are generally made from scratch or are fresh items, its a pretty good deal. Service is quick and efficient, with wait times being fairly minimal. I'd say about a 5 minute wait generally and the time doesn't seem to excessive. Definitely a great lunchwagon/food truck to check out if you happen to see it in your neighborhood! read more

This lunch truck parks near my work every Wednesday and Friday. They are known for their healthy, but tasty food. I've had their Puerto Rican pork and their Stir Fry. The Puerto Rican pork was very tender and the sauce that accompanies it is very yummy! Their Stir Fry is a default dish for me, if I can't find anything else I want I usually get the Stir Fry. You can get the stir fry with chicken, pork, or vegetarian style. They also serve pasta dishes as well as salads. My co-workers really enjoy the kin-wa (not sure if I spelled that correctly) salad. All in all, I like this lunch truck.. Healthy, big portions, and always something different. read more

I love Michi's food truck! It's a wonderful, healthy option on the UH-Manoa campus. Plus, the food doesn't cost more than many of the on-campus options. For instance, you can buy a "bowl" (essentially, mediocre starch dish topped with a bland main dish) from the Panda counter at the Plastic Palms, and you have easily spent over $7 on pretty bad food. Look across the way and see the black truck and KNOW that you could have spent the same amount (plus or minus $1-2) and be very, very happy. All of the regular plates come with Genji Mai rice, which is healthier than white rice but easier to eat than "regular" brown rice (at least, for me). It also comes with a generous heap of salad greens and 2-3 pieces of fresh fruit (orange slices or pineapple, usually). I believe the mini's come with less rice & salad, w/o fruit? I don't remember, because I usually order the regular plate and overeat. :) The regular offerings include the steak and the chicken, both of which have already been described by others, so maybe you don't need me to tell you how yummy they are. The menu usually includes a naan wrap (I've had it with a messy but delicious turkey sausage filling), as well as at least one type of salad. There's a pretty steady rotation of things that appear to be favorites, as well as new things, so it never gets boring. I have had her green curry, the turkey meatloaf (one of my favorites!), the chicken caesar wrap, and the pork chop. I am a huge fan of the ahi belly, too! I'm not completely certain, but I *think* most items are priced in the range of $5-$9. Michi herself is stationed at the helm. I think she's great - warm, personable, and clearly enjoys her work. When it comes to healthy foods, Michi is a flavor master!!!! The ambiance of your friendly neighborhood food truck with the tastes of a seasoned dine-in restaurant. I obviously enjoy eating healthy for my well being, but normally I feel like I am sacrificing flavor for healthy choices. Not with this food truck!! Such creative and multicultural savory flavor combinations that are all created from healthy ingredients that leave you feeling great. Healthy and delicious plate lunches - with a few exceptions. Discovered this black food truck about a year ago when I was a college student at UH. My friend recommended the Turkey Meatloaf with Asian BBQ glaze. I've never been a fan of meatloaf, but this particular blend of sweet BBQ sauce and light turkey made me a believer. I quickly went through their whole menu for the next few weeks and came to the conclusion that this was where I would buy my lunch for the rest of the year! Their (regular) plate lunches are full meals - salad with a miso-like dressing, pineapples/oranges, ghenji mai brown rice, and an entree. Their minis are smaller and don't have fruit. The food is addicting, filling, and healthy - I never feel bloated after eating a full plate, even their steak plate! Not all of their meals are great tho. I recommend their Turkey meatloaf, steak, and poke. Most of their chicken plates are too dry for me, but that can be remedied with a generous portion of sweet chili sauce, tabasco, and/or their volcanic hot sauce (VERY HOT). The other plates are not to my tastes, but there are many new selections added to the menu daily! I also recommend going around 10 or 11am, since they get very busy at noon, and the quality/quantity of their food seems to drop. For now a 3 until I try more things because their menu sounded really good and if its healthier then thats even more of a plus. I ordered the pork posole for $5, it was a mini and it was described as "a leaner version of this traditional Mexican dish, with pork loin, hominy, sweet onion and mild green chiles over Genji-mai brown rice, served with homemade roasted tomatillo-cilantro salsa, chips and a wedge of lime" there was only a little bit of salsa over a lot of sour cream so I wished there was more salsa. It looked pretty good but at first bite it was kind of bland and no distinct flavors going on so I was a bit disappointed with that as I was hoping i would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed my first pork posole at another restaurant but it just didnt compare. Decided to try one of those little food trucks to find a good cheap eat. Instead I found a fly in my Teriyaki Chicken ! Gross. The chicken itself looked really dry and the salad looked like it was at least a few days old. Finding healthy and delicious meals on campus is difficult. But Michi's Cooking Fresh For You is a great option for lunch ! Located right outside of Kennedy Theatre on University of Hawaii Manoa, Cooking Fresh For You is a food truck, and it is easy to spot. I've tried the cornish hen and one of the curries. Both were delicious and the prices are super reasonable. I've also heard that the pork and the spicy ahi are tasty too. Staff is also super friendly and helpful. What's the best about Cooking Fresh For You is that they use healthy ingredients on every dish. All dishes are served automatically with brown rice. This is definitely my number one choice for lunch on campus. read more

I highly recommend their poke (I've had the ahi and another type of fish too, and it's very fresh) and ahi belly (I believe that was a special item). I'm not a huge fan of their Thai green curry, but the steak with pesto is cooked very well. They are usually pretty quick at serving food too, so don't let the line intimidate you. read more

Today I went to the location at UH Manoa and was very dissatisfied with my plate. I get food from here pretty often for their ahi bowls but they didn't have any on the menu so I got the Greek lemon chicken. I honestly lost my appetite and was too disappointed to even go back for a refund. I had gotten two pieces of chicken, one of which was not fully cooked...gross. Threw it away and gave the other piece a try but it wasn't worth it. There was no flavor and tasted dry. All I could manage to eat was the salad. The entrees are also not cooked to order with the exception of the steak plate and fish, but rather just scooped into the container.
