I've never had exorbitant electric bills, but the top floor of my two story town-house was always…read moremuch hotter than the rest of the house. I even bought a thermometer to prove to myself that it was that hot and I wasn't crazy. Well, there was a 10 degree difference and it made sleeping difficult. So, I gave Efficient Home Llc (EH) a call and they came to my home for an energy audit. The audit was $350 and basically included a walk-through of the living spaces, attic, exterior and a 'fan test' to see how much air was seeping into the house. The rep. was really nice and seemed very knowledgeable. He made a few suggestions, but the biggest one was to get insulation added into the attic. Also, I have vaulted ceiling in the upstairs rooms and the rep. pointed out that they create a 'knee wall' in the attic and that special attention would be paid to that. Well, we signed some paper work to have the job done and their installers came out about 5 weeks later. The installation guys were very nice and let me closely investigate their work and made all the corrections I asked for. They installed special material for the knee wall and blasted in cellulose. They also sprayed everything with expanding foam. And I mean everything, a couple of times, they plugged some holes that I would have rather stayed open for easy access later if i need to service the wires that ran through them. Oh well. Success! My upstairs now is less than two degrees warmer than the rest of the house and even though it wasn't really my primary concern, my already modest electric bills have been about 25% less than last summer, but last summer was also hotter. Oh, and they even helped me to fill out my government rebate / utility paperwork. So, all in all, the people who came to my house I felt were very competent and paid close attention to detail and got me the results I wanted at a fair price. So, the -1 star is for the office people. They never called me about anything, I always had to call them. I had the work done some months ago, so I don't remember the details, but they never called me to tell me that everything was in place for an installation, and I called them two weeks later, and they were like "oh, we were going to call you... tomorrow... to schedule an appointment." Ya, right. At some point, I had to give them a final payment for the work, and I actually had to call them some time later and be like "Hello? Did you want to get paid?" So, I recall two times that I felt like my paperwork had fallen through the cracks and I had to call them to remind them I was a customer.

Bill (owner) came to our home to estimate installing blown-in insulation under attic floorboards…read more He explained the work, gave a lot of information, and showed a binder of notes he had received from previous customers. Later, he called because he forgot about a small jut-out in our living room (and said since it was his error, he would add it to the quote at no cost). We were happy with the quote so we called to schedule and were given our choice of days in December - we were told that we were the first to schedule for the month. We chose a Tuesday and were guaranteed that the work would take 2 installers in 1 day. A few days later, we called Bill because we realized he had not included a small jut-out in the back of the house - if the front needed insulation, we asked whether the back would need it as well. He told us yes, but instead of adding it to the quote for free (since he had also missed this area), he was going to charge us an additional $200. We weren't thrilled, but didn't think we had an alternative. Our installation day arrived and we received a phone call around 8am that one installer "called out" and the other was sick, so the work would not be done that day. (By this point, we had already moved everything in the house so that the attic and 2 jut-outs were fully accessible. Our house was a mess. We had also both rearranged our work schedules to be sure we could be home to take care of anything that came up). At 9am, we called the office and spoke with Marie. She told us they had scheduled a 3-day job beginning Wednesday (the next day) and did not know when they would be able to reschedule us. We told her that this was not acceptable, that we had been planning on this and could not wait a few more weeks. We politely asked for priority, since we had been the first to schedule and the next people could at least be given 24-hours notice of a schedule change due to the guys being sick (ie that all jobs be pushed a day). She told us that she would have to speak with Bill and would let us know. Around 12:45 (Marie only works until 1), we called Bill directly, as we still had not heard back about our request that our installation be shifted to their next working day. After explaining the situation (which Bill seemed unfamiliar with other than that the guys were sick), he was very rude to us on the phone, insisting that people get sick and he can't control the schedule. After repeatedly trying to tell us that he would call us back the next morning (which we said was unacceptable, as we needed to plan our schedule), he finally said we'll be there tomorrow and abruptly hung up. The next day (Wednesday), an installer did come to our house. However, only 1 person (we had been told 2 installers) worked and then left at 2pm. He gave us no reason why the work could not be finished in 1 day (as quoted), just that he had to leave and return the next day. Two installers came on Thursday to finally finish the job (about 2 additional hours). They drilled 2 holes in our living room ceiling before they realized that no insulation could be added. They proceeded to patch these 3-inch holes with a couple inches of spackle. We asked why they were not using tape or mesh in addition to the spackle, and were told that "they don't do that." To note, the installers themselves were professional and pleasant. To summarize, what was supposed to be a 1-day installation took 3 days, significantly disrupted our lives at home and at work, and caused a great deal of stress. We have 2 unnecessary holes in our living room ceiling and all areas did not require insulation (meaning less product than expected was installed). We understand that people get sick (which is not the cause of our frustration); we do not feel the rest of the situation was handled well. We did express our concerns to the office, but they did nothing to try to make things right (such as a small discount).
