Love their soup dumplings. I ask for chili sauce and use a generous portion with each bite. I suggest eating the entire dumpling in ONE bite. Soo flavorful. Try to eat it before it gets cold tho and pick it up carefully without breaking the dumpling. I use my hands so I can control the pull from the stickiness of the dumpling to the paper it comes on. The other dishes we ordered were chicken lo mein, crispy chicken, wontons, eggplant with garlic and basil, and spareribs. They were good but, the soup dumplings brought me back the same week! The service was good, friendly. What I didn't like that could easily be fixed was since the ceilings are high, the sounds echo or seem really loud and distracting. Staff is probably used to it and probably does not realize how loud all the sounds are to customers. When they clear the dishes at table side, for me it takes me to a loud cafeteria feel instead of nice dinner or lunch. I would suggest to them being mindful of all unpleasant sounds and stacking the dishes on the cart as quietly and quickly as possible, but cleaning them in the back out of site of current diners. I also think more rice at table side. The portions of rice for me is too small. A more heaping bowl would be nice. However, the meal portions are decent. Here for the second time in a week tho! Food was yummy! I was immediately annoyed with the loud clearing of dishes. I wish I could give it a one star for that alone. The acoustics are not good but that would be unfair to do that and unfair to the workers and chef. Definitely, give this place a try!
Delicious food with good customer service. I tell you these college kids got so many options! I've seen great reviews and I've been meaning to try it. Finally did this week and was happy. I ordered general tso chicken with white rice to go. My food tasted great! The menu is pretty expansive. Definitely a place to dine in for a nice lunch or dinner. Park in the paid parking lot near Looney's!
I decided to stop in one night after seeing great reviews on this place. It's very hard to find good Chinese food anywhere nowadays. First off let me say-the employees were polite and helpful. I place my order over the phone with ease, once I arrived my food was not ready just yet. The employee asked me where I'd parked, I let him know that I was parked around back in the paid parking lot. The guy stated that he'd bring out my order once it was done, so that I wouldn't risk getting a ticket in the lot. I thought that was pretty nice!!! Once I got home, I was ready to tear my Genral Tso's chicken up. Once I opened the container, I notice the color of the chicken was bright red. The sauce didn't have a brownish tint or dark red tint at all. Also, there was no trace of any spice. I'm pretty sure they use Mumbo sauce as their sauce. That definitely was not General Tso's sauce. I know mumbo sauce when I taste it. I was pissed!!!! Mainly because I had my mouth set on that dis, but also because the chicken seemed to be cooked to perfection. It was still bearable enough to eat; however, I would never order that dish from them again.
All food is great. I've been here a couple of times in the evening and the food never disappoints. The ghost pepper chicken is really spicy but sooo damn good. My daughter's go to is Chicken Broccoli. Don't miss out in this gem. Service is always quick. Atmosphere is calm and inviting I've never had to wait for a table, but not because service is slow.
Delicious Delicious Delicious Favorite Thing, Scallion Duck Pancakes! Lean cuts of duck with fresh veggies enough for 2-3 people. The sesame and general tso chicken are very good;they actually seem identical except for the sesame seeds. Beef and broccoli very good. The cuts of beef are tender. The price point is very reasonable and they also deliver. The restaurant stays busy, because the food is excellent. Go & enjoy!
This restaurant exceeded my expectations. Even though it didn't have many reviews online, the food was surprisingly good, almost Chinatown-level good. The soup dumplings were excellent, and they also offer quite a few authentic Sichuan style dishes.
Eastern Gourmet is one of the better Chinese Restaurants in the College Park area. And by better, I mean truly authentic Szechuan style food. In the past few years, Szechuan cuisine has gained popularity with their emphasis on the "ma la" or numbing flavor profile emanating from the the namesake peppercorns, along with the numerous cooking methods such as hot pot and pickling. Was in the area visiting UMD College Park, and my handy Yelp app suggested trying this place since it was within walking distance of campus. And tbh, it's a good thing we decided to walk because the parking...the parking is simply abysmal. There is a small (and I mean, an odd geometrically shaped) parking garage which Eastern Gourmet shares with several other businesses. Upon turning into the parking garage, you will likely be circling around trying to avoid hitting other cars searching for a rare spot. Probably you'll have to park along a neighborhood street or even in one of the UMD lots. The interior is quite modern with high ceilings, neutral color pallette, and Chinese themed art work on the walls. I did like the mix of seating options, which ranged from long communal style tables for larger groups, to booth seating for parties of 1-5 persons. The server arrived at the table promptly and placed our order via a tablet (as is the trend nowadays). We started with an appetizer of the steamed chicken with Szechuan spicy sauce. Note, despite the title, this dish is served cold. But the chicken was prepared properly and retained nice moistness and flavor. The accompanying "spicy" topping had more pronounced notes of Oyster sauce and chili oil. This dish was bettter the next day popped into the microwave for about a minute, once warmed up. The main entree was a classic Szechuan dish, Stir-Fried Pork with Green pepper. Pork was cut into thin strips, and then Wok tossed with bell and strips of spicy chili peppers. The flavor was outstanding. Not too salty and just the right amount of spiciness and heat. Pair this with some rice, and this tasted just as I remembered as a kid. BTW - Eastern Gourmet only provides one small bowl of steamed rice with each entree. At $1.50 for every extra bowl, that's a bit pricey, but on par for what places are charging nowadays. Service was fine; nothing bad and as expected. Food arrived in a timely manner, water glasses were refilled before they were emtpy, and take home boxes for leftovers were provided without needing to be requested. If I'm in the area again, I'll be back to try some of their specialities such as the dry hot pot, and steamed fish. We observed LOTS of large Asian families dining here, as well as hungry students; always a good sign. Of course, any return visits will depend on finding a parking spot...
came back to try their Szechuan beef noodle soup. Ordered my food for pickup and took it home with me. I was surprised everything was still warm by the time I got settled. I loved how my noodle soup was secured for traveling and its components were separated. Overall the soup was really good and perfect for this cold weather. It did have a lot of oil which messed up my stomach the next day but honestly i would totally do it again. So yummy.
Solid place for Szechuan food. We come every time we are in the area. It's definitely the best one local to us. Large serving portions and we always end up with left overs. We love getting their soup dumplings, spicy fish soup, and spicy chicken appetizer. Come see for yourself!
My son always raves about this restaurant. We got carry out from them and it was not really that good honestly. However, that was an hour drive home for the carry out so it could change the taste a lot. Today we ate at the restaurant and got house special fish fillet, dry fried string beans, mapo tofu, and double cooked pork. All the dishes are large portions. There were 3 of us and a good amount to take home. I guess they have to have large portions being in a college town. The string beans were tender and nicely seasoned. The mapo tofu is not overly spicy but numbing enough over the house served white rice. The fish fillets also have a nice coating of seasoning. The only dish that was so-so for me was the double cooked pork. This is a simple seat down restaurant with server coming over to take your order and serve your food afterwards. Like a Chinese "Friday's"! The price is reasonable given the portion you get so bring your appetite and get ready for some delicious food.

I stopped in for a casual meal and left satisfied, with leftovers in hand and my tastebuds happily tingling. I started with the soup dumplings and dry cabbage. The dumplings were your typical fare. The cabbage arrived still sizzling, just off the wok. The taste was great and offered just enough spice. I also ordered additional dishes to go which were packed quickly and efficiently (no spills on the ride home). Service was polite but a little passive at first. I had to flag someone down to place my order, and no drink options beyond water were offered (they do offer them I saw them on the way out). That said, once my order was in, the staff became more attentive, checking in and making sure I was taken care of. The dining space is clean, open, and comfortably quiet, which made the experience feel relaxed and unhurried. There was a steady stream of customers but nothing overwhelming--just enough traffic to let you know it's a trusted neighborhood spot. Overall, Eastern Gourmet is a great option if you're craving flavorful, spicy dishes and don't mind a slightly DIY ordering experience. I'll definitely be back to try more.
Came here with a friend. Great food, pretty bad service, typical Chinese restaurant vibe. I ordered the ghost pepper chicken dish and it was super spicy, which is rare to find in American restaurants. Just what I needed! Their dry beans are also amazing. When my friend and I went to pay, we requested to split the check. I told them my dishes, and they put my friend's food on my card instead. Super careless. Make sure you double, triple check they've got it all right when you pay. Came again, ordered their house fried fish. Again, great food, really tasty, though on the oilier side as to be expected with Chinese food. I made sure to double check with the bill splitting and they split it correctly this time. Raising my review to 4/5 from 3/5 for this. It's annoying, but doable.

However, the wait time due to being understaffed can be long. --- I ordered radish with pork rib soup for takeaway on a Monday evening. There were long wait times at all steps of my order- 10 minutes for someone to take my order and 30 minutes for my soup. The speed of orders seemed to vary, as 3 people ordered takeaway after me but left first with their food. I would have appreciated a seat to wait at and to have had some heads up from the staff about how long the order would take. The interior was rather cozy and spacious considering the more industrial surroundings outside the restaurant. I was shocked at the heft and the size of the radish with pork rib soup. I ate the soup over 3 days. It was piping hot so I can only assume they made it all completely fresh. Honestly, it was so delicious and it had an awesome amount of pork ribs, radish, and goji berries. It really hit the spot. Overall, Eastern Gourmet earns itself perfect stars for me in terms of the food but really suffers from understaffing. While I was there waiting for my take out, the two servers were fighting for their lives to wait the tables. If you choose to dine at Eastern Gourmet, I'd be prepared to wait for delicious food. read more
Ordered takeaway- the vegetable spicy hot pot with bean curd sheets, lotus root, woodear mushrooms, seaweed, bak choy, and green beans, and the beef shank appetizer. Total came out to approximately $42. What's hot - Menu. Pretty good variety! There's something for everyone, even vegans. There's meat, veggies, tofu, seafood, dumplings, noodles (to include noodle soups), and rice dishes. For example, there's a good variety of the different types of tofu, like bean curd sheet, fried tofu, and regular tofu. There's a good variety of veggies, as well, such as bak chow, egg plant, lotus root, woodear mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, etc... - Quality. Very good, with the exception of the spice level, which is addressed below. Both dishes were well-seasoned and not too salty. There are a good amount of spices involved and more than the standard Chinese spices. The beef in the appetizer was tender, thinly sliced, and also came with a good amount of thinly sliced cucumbers and green scallions. All the veggies, with the exception of the green beans (which were a bit on the raw side) in the hot pot dish were tender, as well. For an ethnic Chinese restaurant, my opinion is this place is legit. - Location. Conveniently located in a plaza with other restaurants and shops. It's pretty easy to find, as well. - Layout. Their layout is pretty good, but their tables do not appear to accommodate groups of more than 4-6. They might be able to push together some tables together, though. - Price. Given the portions and quality for ethnic Chinese food, it's reasonable and good value for money. - Service. I arrived a few minutes after I was originally told my order would be ready. My takeaway order was packed and ready when I arrived. The hot pot dish I ordered comes with rice, which was enough for 2 people. The food was also well packed- no leaking and the takeaway containers did not fall apart. Their staff appear to speak both English and Mandarin, as well. What's not - Spice level. For the hot pot dish, I ordered the normal spice level. However, the hot pot dish in combination with the the beef shank appetizer was a bit too much. I could definitely feel my tongue tingling midway through the dishes. I have a pretty good tolerance for spice, so that I could feel my tongue tingling means something. However, that this was the normal spice level for the hot pot and the appetizer dish was too much. My point is to be prepared. - Parking. There is a small parking lot in the complex, but it can be tight. Street parking is dependent on the day and time you go. This neighborhood is a bit dense, so parking is not the easiest to find. Final Answer Would like to return and am less inclined to order anything spicy. read more

Got a quick dinner here with the MaPo tofu and it was yummy! I'm a vegetarian so was nice to have some options. Good price for the portion size. Service was good. read more

I wish restaurants like this were in VA! So good and has the perfect amount of numbing spice and bold flavors. We ate family style so I'm so happy I got to try a lot of their dishes. Scallion pancake duck roll - 4/5 moist duck with a really nice crispy skin and wrapper! It's similar flavor to a pecking duck roll but I think tastier in the scallion pancake Pork soup dumplings - 3.75/5 the skin on top is too thick but around the rest it is fine. The soup is pretty flavorful and meat is moist and yummy! Egg drop soup - 2.5/5 standard good egg drop soup. Nothing special but nostalgic :) Sichuan beef noodle soup - 3.75/5 super flavorful and has a great amount of mala. The meat was not that memorable though. The soup was complex but felt like it was missing just a little something Mapo tofu - 4.5/5 perfect size tofu so the tofu taste does not overpower the sauce. The sauce was amazing, best mapo tofu I've had Pork and veggie - 2.5/5 made fine but pretty standard read more

The green beans were really the only thing we really liked. They were cooked and seasoned well. We ordered pork soup dumplings, scallions pancakes, orange chicken and dry pot green beans. The soup dumplings had a weird look to the filling, we didn't finish them. The orange chicken was flavored and cooked well The scallion pancake was bland The green beans were lovely. Just passing through town so not coming back anyway. read more

This is a full sit-down restaurant next to a rather tasty boba tea spot. It used to be Bobby's burgers for the longest, but they're gone now! My parents and I came because I wanted to give them a taste of Chinese food beyond their usual carryout. We were the only ones in there, so we got seated right away. It was a delight to see hand sanitizer at the table. After looking through the menus, we used that and placed our orders. Mom & Dad were shocked at the prices (quite higher than their carryout), but I knew we were in for a treat. We got a few orders of spring rolls, Dad and I got dumplings, and Mom got mapo tofu. I feel like my dumplings have come with sauces at other restaurants, but maybe those are the fried ones. Besides, these dumplings didn't necessarily need any with the soup inside. Mom got mapo tofu that I couldn't help but taste... and it was a lot too. It was delightfully spicy, and fantastic. All in all, we enjoyed our meals and we'd return... though I see myself getting the dumplings more than anything else. read more

Went here for dinner tonight and had a very pleasant experience. I would say the eggplants, soup dumplings and short ribs are a must (please do not pass on these!) Service is really nice. Our waiter checked on us several times, helped us decide what to order and refilled our waters. It's a nice casual restaurant in college park so a good spot to grub after hanging out. read more

I have been searching for some tasty Chinese food and I got delivery from Eastern Gourmet so I can not speak to the ambiance however if the food is a reflection I must go there. My order was hot, fresh and delicious. I will most definitely have to order from them again and try some of their other dishes. In addition they are very generous with the portion size. So great quality and quantity which is not always the case at some restaurants. read more

Interior was modern looking and clean. Menu is very extensive. While they have some American/Chinese fare, most of it authentic Sichuan style. They also have frog and pig ear on their menu (not seen at every Chinese restaurant). Dry hot pot is another offering, as well as many spicy dishes. Fear not, there are many non-spicy choices like dumplings, buns, different types of Chinese vegetables and soups. Ws had the mapo tofu (by default had no meat) as well as the boiled fish filets in spicy sauce. The mapo tofu was very good. While it was spicy, it was not numbing or overwhelming. The spicy boiled fish was also very good. Plenty of peppercorn, chili oil and cumin to go around. The entree also included cucumber chunks and bean sprouts. I also saw slices of pink preserved meat (ham or spam) thrown in (very different). Not quite sure what it was (haven't eaten spam in many years). Went for early lunch and it was empty. The place was big and clean. We ordered duck scallion pancake, sliced beef in chili sauce, spicy beef noodle soup, baby bok choy, braised pork belly and beef lo mein. All dishes were delicious and I have zero complaint. Having been here twice in one week I still want to come back for more, this will become my go to lunch spot when I want to eat at a sit down restaurant. The food is excellent for the most part and even the not excellent food is good. Service is pretty good especially for only two people taking orders and bringing food out, there is a little difficulty with English, but our large group orders have always been correct. The really good food: Beef dumplings Won ton dumplings Special fried rice The duck scallion pancake things (amazing) Beef soup Chicken and broccoli Beef and broccoli The pretty decent food: Orange chicken Other dumplings Spring rolls Low mein Ask for ice as they serve the water at room temperature. My friend got a recommendation from someone to try this place so we hopped in the car and rode out to College Park. Parking is annoying FYI. The lot behind the restaurant was packed, but maybe it was student move in weekend or something. We got there around lunch time and it wasn't very busy inside so it wasn't too loud. We were starving so we immediately ordered the chili wontons (amazing!) and the shrimp, pork and chive dumplings. The dumplings were pretty good but not my favorite ever. My friend got the combo lo mein which she liked once she had them bring her the chili sauce. I ordered the Dandan noodles which were different from ones I had gotten from another restaurant. This one was in a broth and I think I prefer the version that's not as soupy. The flavor was really good though. Very spicy. I was sweating lol! Pretty solid option for Chinese food and I would go back and try more dishes. read more

Hidden gem alert!!! If you like Chinese food and like more of their traditional dishes, you will undoubtedly enjoy Eastern Gourmet. The food arrived very fast; dishes were served as the food became ready, which we liked. We were starving, so we didn't have spare time. Everything was delicious! We requested the heat to be adjusted since my family cannot deal with spicy food, but chili oil can be served on the side. They also have a more American Chinese menu (orange chicken, beef broccoli, etc). I am looking forward to trying those Chinese-American classics. Tip: you will see Bobby's burger sign still outside. Took my 2nd year Terp back to school and decided to stop by this place for lunch. Eastern Gourmet is relatively new, opened about a year ago. It is conveniently located a few steps from my daughter's apartment building. It was quite busy for 2PM Monday. The menu is very extensive. We ordered several appetizers as well as noodle soups. We love the Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup, the Pork Soup Dumplings, and the Stir Fried Bean Sprouts (AKA pea shoots). On the other hand, the Sour Beef Noodle Soup had too much vinegar flavor. The Scallion Duck Roll was cold and had more cucumbers than duck. The Spicy Wonton had a weird spicy sweet flavor. A common theme here is that all the dishes are very well seasoned. read more
Ordered delivery on NYE. Aiight so boom - I'd spent the day (if not the week) planning and cooking for our family's Karamu. Considering the huge feast that a Karamu is I know it sounds CRAZY to order takeout but after being surrounded by the traditional foods all day, I wanted a different flavor for lunch than what I knew would be enjoyed for dinner so Eastern Gourmet to the rescue. We ordered chicken fried rice, pork in garlic sauce, and house fried lo mein. Everything was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and piping hot. The lomein had beef, chicken, and (3) large deveined shrimp matched with thin sliced celery, carrots, etc) - delicious. Smoky, seasoned, well balanced. Pork in garlic sauce was really tasty. The flavor profile is delightful. A savory sauce with a hint of sweetness to balance and a nice spicy kick. Not so much that you hurt lol but a nice slow heat that tickles your spicy senses. Lastly the fried rice. FINALLY a place that knows how to make fried rice. Their fried rice is made like restaurants used to do in the 80s/90s! Yum! It's not this mushy yellow rice with just beansprouts or onions that you see at so many other places. Their FR has eggs, peas, onions, carrots, and seasoning/FLAVOR! Will definitely order again. It's was so yummy and I enjoyed my experience. Gotta be one of the best or THE best Chinese restaurants in college park. The service was very good, timely and the staff was really nice. The ambiance was really nice and felt very high class. Would definitely recommend the pork soup dumplings or the chili oil dumplings !! read more

Grand Opening on March 1st! The menu has different types of items including steamed Shanghai style soup dumplings, authentic Chinese entrees, fried rice/noodles for simple meal, and casual food, such as Chinese grilled fish, and Spicy Stir-fry Pot. The food is the best Chinese food in PG county. It is a brand new restaurant. The environment is really good. Since it is on the ground floor of a mixed-use student apartment building, you can use the retail parking lot at the back of the building. Very easy access. Even though it was really business for the dinner time, the food comes out quicker than my expectation. I have to say the waiters might be overloaded, but they still kept a good practice. All service requests were responded within a timely manner. Overall experience is great. I look forward to visiting it again. read more

Tried Eastern Gourmet recently and it seems like I've found my spot for good Chinese in this area. I had the Szechuan style stir fried fish, a dish which oddly, doesn't appear on the carry out menu I took home, and it was fantastic. Only reason they lose a star is no alcohol, and Chinese food this spicy and delicious absolutely screams out for at least one, but preferably two or three ICE COLD beers. Interior is kind of spare, not much to look at, but no big deal. It's in a big office building and you have to pay to park, but it's cheap -- dollar an hour. Definitely going back to this place. read more
