Pork Soup Dumplings
Michael E.

East Flour in Livingston continues to fill a special niche of Chinese cuisine that is sadly hard to find in the suburbs: a menu of just noodles, dumplings and dim sum. The menu isn't large, and the dim sum is limited, but what they do offer is all freshly made and delicious. Sadly, one of my favorite menu items, the Beef Tendon Noodle Soup is no longer offered. I can only speculate that beef tendon was just a step too far for Livingston palates and it wasn't selling. Maybe one day they'll bring it back. Fortunately, their most popular menu item, the Pork Soup Dumplings ($9.95), are still on the menu and remain excellent. Always prepared fresh, they take a few extra minutes to make, but it's worth it. The dough is just the right thickness, and always perfectly cooked. They arrive still steaming and the soup inside always provides a burst of flavor that, when combined with a little soy sauce, vinegar and chili oil is one of Chinese cuisines' truly perfect bites. My only criticism is they only offer chopsticks and flimsy plastic disposable silverware. Neither is ideal for eating soup dumplings, but it's really a minor complaint. The staff continues to be friendly and efficient. The restaurant is small inside, but I've never been unable to find a table. If you're unfamiliar with soup dumplings, Google them, then visit East Flour. You'll be glad you did.

Randomly saw this place pop up when I typed in "Restaurants" in Livingston. I was looking for a quick bite and when I saw "dim sum, bubble tea" - I looked no further. Let me just warn you, this place looked closed down when you arrive. It's very dark from the outside and the windows are covered up. I had to check Google to make sure it didn't close down. To my surprise, there were people in there. The person who took my order was super nice! Not much room for seating on the inside - maybe like 3 tables. Seems more of a take out. Let me start with the bubble tea. I really enjoyed it because it was not painfully, candy sweet like some bubble teas are. I got the passion fruit black tea and that's what it tasted like- not artificial. The boba was nice and chewy. Next, the scallion pancakes were amazing. Super light and crispy- and the plum sauce was a perfect match. The peaking duck buns were also amazing!!! What a great filling to put in a bun. The texture of the buns were fluffy...but also had a slight shell/hard coating on the outside from being steamed? They were delicious, ok. Just get them. This place is a gem!!!

Special beef noodle soup

I've tried East Flour twice now. Once with outdoor seating and once takeout. Right now they are take out only. The first time I tried the spicy hot pot which was very good as well as a variety of delicious appetizers. This time I started with special beef noodle soup. Fantastic with a rich broth, a lot of beef, bok choy and noodles. Definitely would get that again. My Daughter got the braised beef noodle soup which she liked but it was spicier than she expected. The pork soup dumplings were excellent even as a takeout item. Pan fried veggie dumplings were big and tasty. The pan fried Peking duck bun is outstanding. The chicken noodle soup my wife had was good and she was impressed with the quality of the chicken. The won ton soup was good. This is in the rotation for us. We also coconut sweet potato milk tea which although a bit chunky was good. I tried the Longan honey lychee fruit tea. No boba but delish. It's a small restaurant give ''em a try and help out a local joint. I think you'll be very happy that you did. Free lot to park in and fast with order prep.

The dumplings are absolutely delicious. I don't recommend the wonton soup, but the other choices make up for it.

Dinner here was really good overall and a solid experience from start to finish…read more I went with the sesame chicken and steamed white rice, which was exactly what I wanted. I also tried pork buns for the first time. It was not really my favorite, but it was still flavorful. My friend had the steamed sea bass, which was cooked perfectly and came with a really nice, tasty sauce. Service was excellent. Our waitress was very sweet, patient, and attentive, offering recommendations and explaining the menu without being overbearing. They start you off with Chinese tea and a small plate of peanuts, which is a nice touch--but if you have a peanut allergy, make sure to let them know right away since it's placed on the table automatically. The meal ends with fresh cantaloupe, which was ice cold, sweet, and a refreshing finish. The restaurant itself is a nice size with reasonable prices. We went on a Saturday night and there was no wait. It could use a bit of sprucing up, but it was clean and comfortable. Parking is easy, and the restaurant sits right on Route 46, so it's not hard to find at all. They accept all major credit cards and cash.

So…read morewhen I found Qin Dynasty in North Jersey, I was willing to make the trek - especially since I had a dim sum craving one weekend. We got there at around 11 on a Saturday. It was crowded but not packed yet. We were seated right away (your whole party needs to be there). There are so many options for dim sum - some that you don't even typically see in Brooklyn/Chinatown. For example, I saw some lobster tails, and a giant cheesy oyster that looked really good but I'm sure they were $$$. We stuck to the dim sum basics - ha gao, shumai, beef churng fun, chicken feet, chicken sticky rice, steamed cha siu baos, and tofu pudding. I don't have any complaints about the dim sum. All were good and some were even better than ones in NYC. And let me tell you - they do not skimp on the meat here. The ha gaos and shumais were so plump! Since it's a rarity that we get to have authentic Chinese food, we also ordered the salted fish and diced chicken fried rice, and the pan-fried noodles with beef. Both were good and had lots of meat. Service was surprisingly attentive - unlike in NYC where it takes forever to flag down a waiter. Our waiter was always nearby and seemed happy to help with our requests of water, chili oil, etc. I think we might have found our go-to Cantonese restaurant. It's just a shame it isn't closer to home.

What an unassumingly great establishment for casual dim sum and traditional chinese…read more I love noodle lee/ noodle wong for that reason: that it is absolutely simple, clean and well done. I came here on a sunday for the dim sum abd it was quiet, but if you place an order in it comes out fresh. The shrimp rice rolls are soft and succulent, the shrimp being very large. Served with soy vinegar sauce. My favorite is the shrimp shumai, full of shrimp and no BS filler. The shrimp dumpling is my third favorite and the fried shrimp ball being my least. Ordered chinese broccoli on the side, very well done. And of course, we always have hot tea on standby pairs well to wash down all the salt. But my absolute favorite is their salt pepper shrimp, light fry coating . The servers are very attentive and quick to place your order.
