But even more importantly, I sat and listened to him talk about life, his beautiful family, his time in Germany during the Second World War . His compassion, honesty, & humility left a deep impression. It was only a few hours but I felt like I had known him forever. He made you feel welcomed.

NO way there's a violin shop in this or in any other structure within a hundred miles of this one. You lie, sir. And, further, you choose questionable attire." I accept, in advance, your apology. For this is, in fact the right place. Peter Horn, a man of infinite wisdom, knowledge and ability, works and lives here. People speak of a "life's work" in a way that places it in another time, long ago, as if it were something we modernists might find unattainable, perhaps even unnecessary. Mr. Horn's life work is the stringed instrument. His shop is an old-world throwback, filled high and low, nook and cranny, with all things musically wooden. A phalanx of mahogany-dark double basses aside the entrance. Delicate violins in every state of manufacture and repair hang from the ceiling. Hand-crafted bows designed and built for your hand, only. My double bass had fallen into disrepair at the hands of a neanderthal; it needed just one thing. Everything. Peter Horn took out his ancient, tiny ledger book, on whose pages were written in a steady, thoughtful hand prices for all his services. I was floored. All this, and you're giving away your talents, for pennies on the dollar? I could not have imagined the complete resurrection of this instrument, but HE did. Now, the sound approximates the music of the spheres, nothing less. Please. Support this business. If an ivory-billed woodpecker, say, showed up in your yard, would you do everything you could to save it from extinction? Of course. So do the right thing. The HS and MS band would get their instruments at our local store, and I took guitar lessons there years ago. It was one of the businesses everyone was proud to call our own. After more than 60 or so years, they shut down. I have a daughter in MS who wanted to be in the band so badly; we go to the meeting, and Pellegrino's is there. The presentation was good, the person presenting did a brilliant job, and I felt good about renting from them. The first payment came due, and I had to close the debit card on file because of fraud. They called me, and I kept the new card on file. The second payment came around; they called me again after my card would not process. I completely forgot to call to change the billing date, and after letting her know that I get paid bi-weekly and can make the payment next week when I get born, hearing my request, her voice flipped from helpful and pleasant to concerned, urgent, and defensive. She overemphasized the 6-dollar late charge that I would have to pay, almost like a mom warning her daughter of the consequences of her actions. Six dollars is nothing; I told her that was not a problem. It was strange that she was extra concerned about a small late fee. She kept pushing for me to change the date to the middle of the month as her first solution, and I explained a second time that I couldn't pick a date that worked best because I couldn't be sure I would get paid on the same date each month. I asked her again if it was possible to call in to make the payment each month or an alternative method; she then became unnecessarily irritated and sighed, saying she would ask. When she came back, she stated that one way was a coupon payment. I have worked in retail/sales/customer service for over 20 years and have never heard of this. I asked my SO, and he said it is a bill you send back with your payment, like sending in the bottom half of an electric bill. He said companies would do this when they don't want to use the word BILL because some businesses view the word bill as unfavorable, so they send "coupons." No company does this; Pellegrino may be the last store on the planet with this payment method. She did suggest that I could send checks; while I have no problem ordering them, it is just not something I use. I asked her again if I could call it in; I can set it for the 15th of each month but will call it in early; that way, I am on time. This whole conversation was weird up to this point, but the conversation turned from strange and tolerable to disrespectful, accusatory, and just inappropriate. She said we could do that, but you have to have it in on time, or else you will have a 6-dollar late fee; I had no problem with it. I will have it in on time, so I can change the date and pay early. Instead of answering my question, she said the same thing. The previous scenario went on five more times, and she was more condescending and disrespectful each time. I could not understand why we kept going in circles and what she was implying. I felt like a tiny insect, not an adult mother who works a full-time job, goes to school part-time, and takes care of her daughter and all the other needs of the household, including appts, schedules, meals, etc. The misguided and baseless opinion she was trying to avoid just coming out with is that she doesn't trust that I will be able to pay on time because I already had two issues with my monthly payment. Since they were the first two payments, she trusted my word even less. I knew what she was trying to do. I am not a fool. I was furious at this unspoken backhanded accusation, and I did lend her an earful. Moreover, I did inform them, during the phone conversation a month prior, that I get paid bi-weekly, and I can't guarantee the funds will be there because of the holidays. If they have a recording of that conversation, they can hear the concern in my voice and my attempt to compromise so I can help myself pay on time each month. I believe I spoke with the same woman; she has zero empathy; the company will not negotiate a payment method that is the most efficient for the customer and act like there are no options other than what they have, and have zero intention of considering the needs of the customer. Worst purchase I ever made because of this experience. I will be advising other parents to steer clear if I am asked. It seems like i consistent issue with no intention to take corrective action.

One of the best luthiers in this region…read more I have been going to their shop for years and having luthier work done. John, Susan, and staff are so good. I stopped taking my guitars to others shops regionally, that where endorsed by nationally high level players for setup. Yea...they where good but... John's setup was always a step above. John has has been able to give me back semi-playable so-sos, to a silky smooth sweetheart that I have a hard time parting with, even it not top of the line. Now my grandsons and step-son have requested some of my guitars to learn on. I learned on poor quality stock setup. I wanted to quit until I felt instrument setup correctly...and then I was hooked. I want them to know what a good guitar setup feels like versus factory milktoast setup, so that they want to keep on playing and upgrading to their playing style/level. Wadsworth Music facilities that path with both the service and the inventory selection to upgrade when needed. They seem to have heavy support for the local high school band members as well, which I tend to hold dear. (Sry...bias from being HS band member in my days. Would love a high & tight rudimentary snare drum, or 3 valve B-flat marching baritone if I could still blow solo blues. Alas, those days gone. Low-energy guitars will have to suffice.)

I had Wild Dutch work on my guitar years ago and would never go again…read more I told the owner up front on the phone that I wanted my 8 string guitar's intonation adjusted, pickup that I supplied installed, brass nut that I supplied filed and installed, but that I would need it done within 2 weeks as my band was about to record in the studio. I explicitly said that I could wait until later to do all this but that if they had the bandwidth I'd rather do it before recording. I was told they could. It took 2 months. First, they said that everything was so complicated because it was an 8 string, so it was going to take longer. This isn't some kind of fanned fret guitar or some exotic bridge, it's a cheap Ibanez RG8 with a fixed bridge. This is the easiest kind of guitar to intonate, regardless of the addition of two more strings. Second, the owner said that the brass nut wasn't going to be able to be filed because brass was "extremely hard", even though brass is an extremely soft metal. He said he was going to destroy all his files and that I'd need to buy him a new set. He strongarmed me into going with a Graph Tech graphite nut instead. I later took a bass guitar to another tech to get a blank brass nut filed and installed and the tech at that shop laughed at what John from Wild Dutch said to me about brass nuts. Other guitar tech said brass is soft and easy to cut, not much more work at all. Third, the guitar tech who was tasked by the owner with installing my Lace X-Bar pickup was completely baffled on how to physically insert it into the correctly sized neck pickup cavity, despite the fact that I had installed a matching Lace Deathbar in the bridge cavity already. He said it didn't fit and that he needed to buy a router and make a larger hole for the pickup to fit. I was flabbergasted at how he thought this but he was so insistent and wouldn't respond to reason. He supposedly waited weeks for this equipment to come in and then when I called for an update he finally told me that he was trying to fit the pickup in upside down and that's why it didn't fit. If you've seen what a Lace pickup looks like, you know that this doesn't make any sense, especially when one was literally already installed in the guitar. Just complete incompetence. The only good part of my experience was the fact that the intonation was nearly perfect, a service that I've been able to get for other guitars and basses from other techs for 1/3rd the price and within a couple days, not months. Finally, I also didn't get my original neck pickup back after getting my guitar worked on, something I didn't realize for a couple months. It's an 8 string guitar so the pickups are unlikely to get confused with any other one laying around in a shop, so I called to let John know I never actually got my pickup back, and he was incredibly aggressive and accusatory. Imagine treating a customer like that at your own job. He really made sure to leave me with a terrible impression after I had bent over backwards to be understanding about the timeline and inflated service cost for my guitar. I recommend everyone to stay away from Wild Dutch Guitar Hospital.
