Ok the main point is that the food here is great, and thats really why you'd be there. You definitely need to prepare to wait for a while to get your order in and for at least half an hour for food to come out... so its not family friendly, expecially with hungry toddlers in tow. But I had the eggs benedict and cleared my plate, so good! My husband had the ham, eggs, hashbrowns and toast and enjoyed it as well. The waffles were ok nothing special. We had brunch here and it is quite small and had a long wait. The wagon wheel breakfast was huge. Our 17 year old only finished about half of it. My burrito again was huge. Just needed some sauce and some more flavor. My husbands corned beef hash was flavorful but the meat was strips where we prefer the typical chopped up with chopped potatoes. Second time here as not from the area and was just as impressed as the first time. The portions on the Gravy Train are very, very large. I don't say this often, but I could not eat all of my food. I wanted to update my review for this location because I've been here about 10 times now and it's still by far one of my favorite restaurants in town. I've had multiple things on their menu and this last time I had their hamburger and it was seriously one of the best hamburgers I've had in awhile. Who would've thought a breakfast pub place would have an amazing hamburger?! Also I wanted to mention the hospitality at this establishment. The servers are all so amazing, attentive, and friendly. I've come here plenty of times with groups of 2 to 15 with my nursing buddies and they've accommodated to our endless amount of needs! I still and will always recommend this establishment! I used to love this place when it first opened years ago. My wife and I frequented it. We moved away for work and recently moved back, and excitedly returned here for brunch - this time with our child. I'll likely never return. Why? I'm sure the food is still good; I didn't have any when I went last, though. We were there for a Sunday brunch; sat to wait for seating, and left because of the ambiance. The whole time we waited they were playing unedited hip hop music from my youth. Without kids I'd probably think this was fun. With my toddler, though... well, I just don't need Snoop Dog, Eminem and Dr Dre teaching my kid how to drop F-bombs and the "N" word on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The music was loud, and I'm not sure how anyone could have a conversation in the place, and the choice of music was tasteless unless you only want to attract a young hip crowd. I'm not young and hip anymore, and I have a child to teach morality to, so I won't be frequenting a restaurant that will teach him to say words that will get him into trouble. Before arriving I had the plans of ordering the chicken in waffles but after getting there and looking through the menu, I decided on the egg benedict, and I have to say, I was not disappointed! The staff is SUPER friendly and helpful. The mimosas are killer. The food is EXCELLENT. absolutely nothing to complain about here! I will say, when we visited it was a Saturday around 11 and the wait was rather long, but what do you expect on a weekend at a brunch place? This is our first visit. Might be our last. The wait was 35 min. The food was ok. Wife had chicknwaffles with sweet potatoe nuggets. She really liked the nuggets. The chicken was over cooked and had breading on it that was top much and fell off. I had the biscuits and gravy with eggs hard over and hash browns, with sausage patties. The eggs were under cooked/raw, the gravy was from powder and still tasted floury or under cooked. The hash browns were crispy but had black char under sides. The tasted like the oil or grease was old that they were cooked in. The staff was friendly and helpful. They refilled waters and attended to our needs in a timely manner. read more

I ran into a girlfriend at the Farmers Market and we decided to have breakfast here. We only had to wait about 20 minutes at 8:45 on a busy Saturday morning; we appreciated having chairs while we waited outside. The tables inside are social- distanced which explained part of the wait. Between the two of us, we had the Gus Gus omelet (cooked perfectly with generous fillings); sweet potato "nugs", waffle, and raisin toast. Everything was delicious and definitely worth waiting for. Bre was our server, and she brought the items we requested (extra butter and jellies) quickly. She kept our drinks full and knew how often to check and see if we needed anything. This is a nice new addition to Springfield. The decor is nice and the service was great. I really love the retro menus on the old school clipboards! I ordered The Fighter plate and my son had the chipped beef on toast with gravy. Everything tasted great. My only complaint was that I ordered over easy eggs and they were crispy fried. I didn't say anything because I don't like to waste food. But next time I'll just be specific and say it really needs to be over easy because crispy egg whites aren't my thing. My all time favorite breakfast place. My wife and I go every chance we can, and they are always accommodating to us (and we have 2 boys under 2!), kind, courteous, and prompt. Literally the BEST omelet I have ever eaten, my entire life. I don't know what the secret is, but between that and the delicious sweet potato nugs, it's a delight for your palate. We had a variety of menu choices, starting with the scrumptious beignets as an appetizer (WHAT? an appetizer for breakfast?...stay with me here). My husband ordered corned beef hash and after almost a 30 minute wait our server came and was sorry to say they were out of corned beef. My husband changed his order to the gravy train with hash browns and over medium eggs. I ordered the eggs benedict. About 15 minutes later our food arrived. I have to admit I had pretty high expectations and was very disappointed in both of our meals. The gravy train had way over baked biscuits, the eggs were way over cooked and the hash browns were undercooked. The eggs Benedict came with untoasted English muffin, very hard poached eggs and undercooked hash browns. I will say that they were busy and short handed. Our server voluntarily took 50% off our ticket and I appreciated that. I'm hopeful they were having a bad day. I'd rather give this a 3.5. To be fair, Early Bird is still my go to treat yourself breakfast spot or go to place when I have out of town guests. However, over the years it's clear they have begun to cut some corners to save money. The clearest of them is the coffee. You can see from past photos here of their menu that they initially partnered with local Brick and Mortar coffee. It was amazing. It was perfect. Two local businesses making the most amazing breakfast experience. Now, I have no idea what brand of coffee they are using, but it's straight up bad. The first time I noticed it I asked for a fresh cup, then a cup of decaf, all bad. I am not a coffee snob, I'll scoop up Folgers and Aldi's and all sorts of beautiful drip grounds. It's such a shame because the Brick and Mortar coffee was such a complement, and everyone orders coffee without thinking! They could up the price and to make up the difference. It's more disappointing because Springfield has so many wonderful roasters Early Bird could support. When it comes to the food, I recommend The Cardinal, add bacon. And you can swap fruit cup for black beans if you're a glutton who's not a fan of all that melon. The tacos are A+. The pancakes are very large and pretty decent as well. Overall, still my favorite go to breakfast spot. Always a plus you can choose sweet potato tater tots or hash browns, not quite the great choice of sweet browns from Gailey's, but still nice. read more

They're most expensive breakfast meal is called Gravy train on biscuit wheels, costing $13 of your hard earned money. That's not insanely high for a meal but is it worth it? Believe me when I say, it is worth every dollar. I literally have never had a better breakfast plate put on my table in my life and that's including my moms bussin food from when I was little. IF YOU GO HERE, don't cheat yourself. Get the Gravy train on biscuit wheels and when you come back this time next week... you won't think twice about what you want to order. Also their breakfast stout is the best stout I've ever had... and I've dropped at least $100 trying to find a good stout. read more

"What kind of hipster place have you brought me to?" my husband asked. He is going through sort of a Ron Swanson phase, and so the crowd around the restaurant, which skewed younger, had him a bit worried. I mean, what if there was tofu lying in wait? I am happy to report that I didn't notice any tofu on the menu, but there were many other delicious sounding things to choose from, breakfast items as well as sandwiches. We were driving through Springfield, returning from a long weekend in Branson, and I wanted a breakfast unique to the town. Early Bird was easy to get to from the highway, if not immediately adjacent. When we pulled up around noon on a Sunday morning, the parking lot was packed. Good sign. I gave our name the hostess stand, and she quoted a 35-40 minute wait, but it turned out to be about half that before we were seated. We got one of the bar tables with backed stools, but the stools were more comfortable than most of their type. The menu is several typed pages on a generic clipboard. It was the kind of menu that made it difficult to choose. I'd heard good things about the "Bird's Nests", but I was also interested in the sweet potato "nuggs". Finally, I chose the "Eggs Atlantis," an Eggs Benedict with salmon, and a side of the "nuggs". My husband had the "Uncle Cheese," a sandwich with three kinds of cheese, bacon, and ham on a Parmesan crusted bread with hash browns. He also ordered a side of their gravy. We skipped the drinks since we were on the road, but I had coffee and it was tasty and strong. I usually only drink coffee with breakfast, but theirs was very good and when I asked for cream, it was served in a tiny mason jar instead of in the little single serve cups. The food took a bit of time since it was Sunday brunch time, but when it arrived it was solid! The poached eggs were perfect, and the Hollandaise sauce was nice and lemony. The dish wasn't drowned in sauce, so the eggs, salmon, and Hollandaise balanced well. The sweet potato nuggs were okay. They needed a bit of salt and were a bit less crispy than I expected, but they did go well with the egg dish. The "Uncle Cheese" sandwich went over well and I got a taste of the sausage gravy, which turned out to be really good with the good, fresh taste of gravy that has been made in house instead of reconstituted from a mix. The hash browns were...hash browns. No harm, no foul. We spent a little over $20 for the two of us without drinks, and the servings were generous. read more

We made a stop here for brunch on our way back to STL from Branson. I'm super glad we did because it was delicious, reasonable food. Bf was pretty cranky about going to a "breakfast pub" because he wanted lunch. It took some convincing, but I finally convinced him they have lunch items as well. He settled on the "only" lunch item (its not) he found appetizing, the Shredded Pig with waffle fries $10. It looked amazing, but he still won't tell me how it is because of said grumpiness. I'll say it was probably quite scrumptious. The fries and (house made?) ketchup were yummy. Ketchup had a little kick, in a good way. I ordered byo scramble of bacon, cheddar, mushroom, red pepper, and tomatoes with hash browns and biscuit with a side of gravy $10. Mine was delightful! It came out wrong first, but they were happy to quickly fix the mistake, which I always appreciate. The ambiance was a mix of families and college student, as well as couples. We sat at the bar and both bartenders were pretty attentive. The hostess was very friendly. I love that they had a patio as well, although we opted not to sit outside. All these reviews complain about the time it takes to receive your food... If I had to guess, I would say that people flood in here on weekend days, and then wonder why the kitchen is slammed. Plus, it's a new restaurant...Springfield opens the floodgates for new restaurants. I had zero problems. Went in, ordered, ate, and was out in 45 minutes. No problemo. They have a gigantic menu--five pages worth of breakfast goodness. Anything you could possibly imagine. I mostly skimmed over the menu after I saw the eggs benedict section. I chose the eggs Florentine, with English muffins, tomatoes, fresh spinach, poached eggs, and hollandaise. I was excited to see a handful of fresh spinach on my plate-it's a nice touch. Eggs were poached well, and the hollandaise was fairly mild but tasty. I also had a side of sweet potato tots...which brings me to one of my few complaints about Early Bird. I cannot in good conscience use the word 'nugg' in reference to sweet potatoes (at least not in public). I waited for our server to offer me hashbrowns or 'nuggs' so she had to say it first. Anyway, they were delicious, and I am super picky about my sweet potatoes. I did not order a drink since I was headed to work, and it took lots of self control. They had a lot of light cocktails that would be perfect with a brunch meal. Reminded me of a fancy country club's menu. There was a full bar and a beer menu as well...that I didn't examine as carefully as I normally do since I was on a tight schedule. Next time I plan on having a drink...or three. The restaurant was clean and decorated tastefully (and you get water in a stemmed glass-makes you feel all fancy). It was a little chilly in there, but I WAS the 2nd person through the door after they opened. Probably takes the heat a little while to kick in. All in all, I would say that Early Bird is working out the kinks from earlier reviews. I had a good time, the staff was friendly, and the food was good. I really enjoyed my breakfast at the Early Bird. I had the bluebird, which was lovely. I'm not really a morning person, and I have a hard time throwing down a big, hearty breakfast, so the bluebird was perfect for me - two light puff pastry shells with cream cheese, blueberries, and a wonderful granola. Add a hardboiled egg and a side of fresh fruit, and it was as close to morning heaven as a night owl like me is ever going to get. If you don't want to eat like me, there are FIVE pages in the menu, so you will certainly find something to fluff your feathers. If you'd rather get your beak buzzed, there are lots of fancy breakfast drinks to choose from as well. The ambiance on the inside is nice. You can nest at a table, a booth, or the large curvy bar. Plenty of room for everyone on a weekday morning, but they're packing the house on the weekends, so get there early (or late) if you're not in the mood to roost for a while.
