We need a quick little outing on a Saturday afternoon recently. I saw that The Broken Spoke had…read morebingo at 3:30pm today along with some burger specials, so that fit the bill. They're located at 1529 University Blvd North, so not all that far from us, which is great. This review originally appeared in the Jacksonville Fun, Eats & Drinks Facebook group. We stopped in here once before, many years ago. The reason for only stopping in once was because they allowed smoking, which I can deal with to an extent but it was like walking into a wall of smoke back then. I saw on their IG account that they've made a bunch of improvements both to the bar itself and the menu. So I figured we'd give try again. I'll get this part out of the way early: they're still a smoking bar BUT our experience today was FAR different than it was a few years ago. I'd read about how they installed a bunch of new filters and so on. So I thought "if nothing else, we'll walk in with good intentions. If a wall of smoke hits us, we'll make a u-turn and go elsewhere". I was happy when we got there and there was no smoke wall. There was faint smell of smoke but it wasn't bad at all. So whatever they did / are doing is working IMO. I don't know if they had food back when we stopped by years ago but I can tell you they have great burgers now. They had a deal going today where all the burgers were buy one, get one half off. We started with Jalapeño Poppers, then I picked the Bagger (mushroom & swiss) burger with tots and my wife chose the Dyna (the standard cheeseburger) with waffle fries. The poppers were standard but good. The bartender suggested the Sweet Chili sauce to go with it. Sweet Chili sauce isn't my thing but it's definitely my wife's thing. She said "I would eat this with a spoon" lol. So for her, the sauce elevated the poppers to above standard. The burgers were pretty great, in both of our opinions! I'm a pretty slow eater for one reason or another and my wife pointed out that she's never seen my eat a burger as fast as I ate that one. So I'd say that's my taste buds telling me I thought it was great. I judge my wife's thoughts on burgers by how many times she tells me she likes it with her mouth full while eating it. That happened about 4 times today lol. We (she) had fun with bingo while we were there even though she didn't hit a bingo. She came close a few times and had fun, which was the distraction we were looking for. The bartender and cook are both worth a mention in this post. Jen was the bartender but she was really all over the place, taking care of the people at the bar along with us and others at tables. She was really nice while doing that, too. Tammy was the cook. We met her because she came out to ask how the burgers were and really seemed to care about the feedback and the fact that people enjoy what she's making. I'm glad we stopped by again. As I said, I totally understand how/why a place that allows smoking isn't for many folks. That's why I'm dropping 4 stars instead of 5. However, my wife went from saying "well I guess we'll never go in there again" several years ago to saying things like "the next time we come here" during today's visit. So if you can tolerate a low amount like her, you may want to try stopping in to see what you think.

When we walked in, we saw a huge table of senior citizens, maybe about 20-30! We decided to stay. There was only one Bartender and one Waitress. The place was packed. We sat by the window seats-that was all that was left to sit at. The Waitress was very attentive(even though she was slammed). Today's special was shrimp baskets. Shrimp could be cooked three ways. I chose fried w/onion rings(fresh-not frozen rings) & and a 50/50 tea. My meal was delicious. Laura had blackened shrimp w/broccoli. We both enjoyed our meals and had a great conversation. I had $40.00 cash on me and Laura had a card to treat me, but the internet and card machine had just gone down. So I paid for the meal and tip. Laura Cash App'd me $40.00. Pros:big place with a very friendly atmosphere. Great service and food. Cons:it was out of their control that the machine went down. Recommend:Yes

This place is in a busy area of town center. It has a cool semi-upscale ranch style vibe. I was…read moresuper excited to try this place based on reviews but was disappointed. The staff were friendly but super busy due to inside volume of people. The food looks good and the steak was cooked fine, but the chimichurri had too much oil & fries were super salty. Like it was fried in it and topped off with it... I had let the person who brought the food out know (who works with the chef), and they never offered to bring me different fries. They just said they would tell the kitchen but didn't offer anything and so I didn't eat the fries at all. This plate being $38 before tax, I mean you want good fries....For the drink I got one of their mocktails which honestly was not up to par at all tasting like water and cucumber and nothing else, and I ended up ordering a soda... Again staff are friendly, but if management could pay attention a little more even when they're busy, it would help a lot, especially if someone is not happy with their food. I will not try this place again for a while as there are other places better than this that have similar dishes. Again when people are eating alone or in a group, make them happy with the food please...

That said, I still really enjoy stopping in. The popovers are my favorite and honestly one of the main reasons I keep coming back. BB's usually has rotating meal options and entrées, which keeps things interesting, and I enjoy seeing what they have available. I'd recommend BB's if you're looking for a cozy local spot with great baked goods, good food, and especially if you want to try the popovers. Simply put, the three person team running the place are instantly people you have know for years. The lead-off hitter behind the counter runs the show like a coach on the field. The clean up hitter is there with your food and anything else you need to stay in the game. I showed up with a team of Wise cracking fools and the Home team just ran with it. This was a very pleasant lunch with great food and great camaraderie. I will be back many times.

They also have a full service bar where you can order. Brisket sandwich is legit good. But the King Sandwich has cheese sauce, two jalapeño poppers, and smoked sausage for only $2 more. Multiple sauce bottles are available at your table and I was surprised that I enjoyed the western Carolina style the most. Banana pudding was good. I would definitely come back when in JAX.

But after many failed attempts, we ended up here because it was the one of the only places where the kitchen was still open at 9:30 at night to our surprise, this place is an actual nightclub! I will say that the place was extremely clean and open, perfect for groups and gatherings. At the time we arrived, the place was fairly empty. Because they are a club/lounge, they are known for their all you can drink option. Unfortunately, I do not consume liquor, only wine, so this created limited options in regards to drinks. The manager was so accommodating that he acquired a bottle of wine for our table so that I could enjoy an alcoholic beverage. Our food was very tasteful, and very fresh tasting. We were extremely shocked, given that this was indeed a nightclub. If you're ever in the area and you want to enjoy some Latin vibes, but you also want to secure some good food to have while you drink, definitely count this place in!
