They make almost everything from scratch including their own ranch dressing which is amazing. You can actually taste the sour cream and buttermilk unlike store bought version with soybean oil. 2nd time at Chow Down, this time I patronized the building. Although the food is good for an in between a professional restaurant taste and presentation and home-made. I was not liking the inside. There isn't any care or consideration to operation or decor. The condiment station is messy. It's a bit hot from the cooking and just loud. The seating is more "get one if you can". Great place like an old fashioned luncheonette with fresh food. You order at the counter from the menu board. Breakfast served 7-10 then they switch the grill over to lunch. I've been here several xs before always good. This time I had a salad with grilled chicken & their yummy house made Southwest dressing. My Dining partner had a tomato basil wrap of buffalo chicken. He said it was excellent. It comes with fries ( they make great fries) but he was watching what he was eating today so no fries. A hidden gem--I just love it when I find one! This deli-style café has very fresh ingredients and a wide-ranging menu. One of my sons had read some online reviews of it and wanted to try the food--yes, a small adventure to get mom out and about. Very friendly atmosphere even though we arrived about fifty minutes before the 3 o'clock p.m. closing. Wonderful attitude towards dealing with my allergy to onions and I had no reaction to what I ate so I know the chef was careful! I had the classic Italian sub (sans onion) and my son had the beef Philly. I asked that half of my sub be wrapped for to-go and it was nicely done and placed in a clamshell. I devoured the other half! My son loved his Philly. There's plenty of inside seating. Forget Denny's, forget IHOP for me it's all about the mom and pop business around me. It's safe to say for me I choose Chow Down Alley every time. Once you walk through the front door someone always greets you and makes you feel welcomed. Once you walk up to the ordering counter you get greeted again by the Beautiful ladies that I believe run the whole place other than the mail owner who's always at register. Now on to my meal which was saliva-tingly good. I order the chicken tender wrap with honey mustard on a tomato basil wrap with lettuce and onions. I'm not really a fan of tomatoes on my food so I decided to leave it out. As you can see from my pictures that the food was put together with love and kindness. That's what I always say when my food looks very presentable. I like to toot my own horn in my photography portrait skills from time to time and with each Yelp review I'm only getting better I believe. This may seem far fetched but I will go on record and say Chow Down Alley has the best seasoned crinkle fries in Jacksonville. Their exact temperature to hot and ready is like no other. I love my fries in between mushy and completely crispy and I'm saying they have that down to a science there. This place is fantastic and the staff is super friendly, which makes the whole experience. I went in, while my wife was in the hospital up the road, getting ready to give birth. I ordered a peanut butter brownie because it is her favorite, and was chatting with the staff, and they gave me another brownie to bring her! The peanut butter brownies are absolutely the e best. Very affordable too, their ranch is also good but their fries are seasoned pretty well so i dont usually need a sauce. Their chicken sandwich is great, it looks like what you see on fast food ads but you actually get the same thing like the sandwich was big, i lovee that they put more than 1 slice of tomato and lettuce, it balance out the sandwich really well. I got full and didnt pay much compare to my almost $20 meal at Chipotle with a drink that barely had any meat. I didn't think I would like it but I was very impressed. The staff greet you walking in the door, their always smiling and it looks like they know ever person who comes in by name. Impressive. Now the salad was plentiful and fresh, the chicken was juicy and seasoned well. Now for the homemade Ranch Dressing, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you try it. That dressing is soooooo good. First and foremost, I have to say the people here are amazingly friendly. Although you go to the counter to order and then they bring your order to you...the service is fantastic. They will continue to check on you as well. The entire place is very clean and well kept. I believe you can nearly eat off those floors they are so clean. So why the 3? Well, the service is only a portion...it's the food, cost, quality and taste. Quite frankly I am surprised this place has a 4+ star rating. But this is why we do reviews right?...To share our experience and opinion for others to make informed choices. Today we went in for breakfast. My son got a pancake & bacon, my husband got the Hungry man breakfast and I got a Western Omelet with their home fries (potatoes). Our food was made to order, which is awesome. It was also cooked perfectly and evenly. We tasted each other's food and there simply wasn't anything special about anything, and overall there was no flavor really. The pancake seemed tough in an odd way. As for the Hungry man and the Western Omelet...slightly bland. I totally get not using spices when you serve the masses, but this is not the masses, this is a little place with a name all its own. Honestly, this is what "anybody" could make at home or get anywhere...nothing special. It's fills you up, it's ok and edible, but average. There just isn't that "thing" that makes them stand out, etc. They use Nature's Own and another plastic sleeve type of bread (see pic). Nothing is wrong with that, but if you expect for them to use bakery fresh or homemade, it's not. If you have any allergies, please note. It's really a shame because I could tell the eggs & veggies were fresh, yet they use store bought packaged bread. There are only condiments of ketchup, mustard and A1 over at a self-serve bar. The ketchup and mustard are in large containers with pumps. So if you want to use them you must take your entire plate to the bar since cups are not provided. The breakfast seemed to be ok priced. But in looking at the lunch menu I personally thought the prices were slightly elevated. If I/we go back for lunch...then stay tuned...I'll update my review. Came in today at a great time to pick up lunch 10:45. This is my 2nd time. Tuna salad is a plus! Wanted to get in before the big lunch crowd especially with the Phillips Hwy traffic on lane closures as of lately.
