I was surprised to walk into here on a Saturday evening and the place was empty, no other customers besides myself. The staff that took my order was super friendly and kind. The place looks wonderful and spacious; has a bar area along with regular seating. I had the karaage, hot mama roll, and fancy rainbow roll, and everything tasted great - fresh and prepared to order. The karaage wasn't spectacular, but it was still okay. It lacked a good crispiness aspect on the exterior while the inside was fantastic, very juicy and moist chicken, not dry at all. The sauce it came with paired well with it too. The sushi rolls were delicious on the other hand, they looked very vibrant and the tuna, salmon, and tobiko on the rolls had a really nice flavor profile. This sushi spot is near the circle, where Hinata was formerly (which I adored and miss dearly) and after seeing a photo of the 9 piece box I knew we had to try it. We love sushi. It's probably my son's favorite thing to eat. We've had great sushi in Indy and some less than great. I'm so thrilled to report we loved E Sushi! The quality was high, the fish was fresh. The soup and sides that came with the meal were a great surprise. The 9 piece box was gorgeous and such a good value with outstanding pieces. We had ordered O-Toro separately because I didn't expect it to be included. We were absolutely tickled for some more and loved the caviar and gold flake touch. Salmon belly, scallop, shrimp for my son.. it was a perfect split for us. Lukas loved the uni- it was his first time trying it. That huge oyster was a fun surprise for me. We had to try a roll also and the sweetheart roll was a fun one. We enjoyed that as well. We also ordered a beef udon. Very flavorful broth and the noodles were the perfect texture. Service was also spot on and the experience was enjoyable. My only let down was that the online menu abailable for a to-go order, listed Ankimo, a bucket list food for me to try, but it's not on the menu and was not available at all. I ordered the American Dream Roll and the Tan Tan Ramen to go. The roll was okay- I couldn't taste any lobster and topping had somewhat turned to mush. The ramen had the right elements, but the broth needed more flavor and was not hot enough to break down the noodles enough to separate. For the price point, so had higher expectations. read more

Came to town for the Indiana Fever Game. Wanted to grab a bite afterwards and E Sushi was near our hotel. When we approached the restaurant a worker was outside and encouraged us to come in and to take a look at the menu. We decided to give it a try and what a delight. Rósela was friendly and informative. We ordered the Sake Bomb for 2 and she showed us how it is done! The edamame, dumplings, fried rice and sushi roll were all very good. I found E-Sushi on Yelp while searching for a new place downtown to try. I am SO happy that I found this place! We went on a Thursday night and there were few people seated (which I get, because it's new.) With the quality and flavor of the sushi, this place will be packed nightly soon! I ordered the Lion King, Hot Momma and sweet potatoes rolls. Hot Momma was the best spicy tuna roll I've ever had. It was actually spicy, and left behind in my mouth a nice level of hot! The Lion King roll was also amazing - great texture and flavor. I'd never actually had a sweet potatoes roll before - we were both fighting over the last piece! I've been eating sushi for years, and have had it all around the country. E Sushi easily earned a distinction as some of the best sushi I've ever eaten. Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Ate at eSushi this evening and thought it was wonderful! Unfortunately, Japanese restaurants here in the states are relegated to what's popular or what gringos will eat: teppanyaki, teriyaki, ramen, and some sushi. In Japan, you would go to a tempura place for tempura, a sushi restaurant for sushi, etc. And while eSushi has all of the popular dishes, they make them very well. As a rule of thumb though, there are a few things I look for when trying a new Japanese restaurant in the U.S. How is the quality of the raw fish? Theirs is very fresh with sushi dish serving sizes being very generous. Look for fish-to-rice ratio: if the fish pretty much covers the rice ball and it drapes over onto the plate, they're doing it right. How "authentic" is the menu? If they have (what I call) gringo food and a mix of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, etc., I'm not impressed. eSushi has a good assortment of truly Japanese dishes with only a few exceptions. There were even a few dishes that hadn't seen in a long time. Do they use real tempura batter or is it simply fried shrimp? eSushi uses the actual batter, which should be very light and not greasy. They did not serve it with grated ginger or daikon, but I've found that only Japanese-run places serve that, because the typical gringo doesn't know what to do with them. Is the owner/management actually Japanese? I've learned that non-Japanese-owned places are just a "little off". eSushi hits the nail on the head with, what I call, Mom-approved flavor and preparation, even though NOT Japanese-owned. Someone really did their homework and/or training. Two things that disappointed me: Their white rice was a little dry and not fluffy. I ordered the sanma shioyaki, which is typically a fish that's 8-12 inches long, but the plate of three were about 4 inches. It was definitely not worth the $10. Otherwise, I can't wait to try their other dishes, but from the experience today, I'm sure those will be good, too! Oh, and their service is spot-on, too! read more
