Recently I came across Yi's new salon that recently opened up on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. I decided to wander in and ended up speaking with Yi awhile about hair, and felt that this is a hair stylist who truly loves his job, has passion to make his clients leave his salon feeling and looking fabulous and listens to what his clients like. I decided to book a blow dry for the very next day. From arrival to the end of the appointment - everything was wonderful. From the start with a wash and a relaxing head massage to the blow dry itself where Yi took extra care to be gentle with my double processed hair and to be detail oriented on each wave and curl that was placed. I certainly did leave Yi and his salon feeling fabulous and like I can take on the world, or we'll at least take on Friday night. It's now Sunday and my waves are still looking full and beautiful. Yi and I met somewhat "accidentally" as I was passing by his hair salon. It was striking how beautifully decorated his salon's window was. The first thing I know is Yi welcoming me into his space. He was attentive and kind throughout our chat, which landed in a way that made me want to come back. Once I was ready to change my look, Yi consulted me on some options I have to color my hair. He encouraged me not to rush in making decisions. This way of relating to prospective clients is unique in the sense that Yi saw me first as a person, and then as a client - that doesn't happen too often in a busy NYC... I wasn't going to post a picture but i noticed yi was dishonest in his reply to me. i've never been so dissatisfied and disgusted with how this was handled. Where do I even begin?! Too many good things so I'll go for bullets: -Precise: When I first went to Yi in 2019, I booked a balayage session and showed him a picture of an ashy blonde I wanted. Balayage wouldn't get me to ashy blonde, he told me. He patiently explained how my hair had warm midtones so I'd be better off bleaching light and toning down, potentially with a shadow root to blend the roots. I was skeptical but needless to say, he was right. Yi carefully cuts through the latest hair buzzwords to make sure he's giving you the look you want. -Thoughtful & strategic: Yi makes sure he understands your long term goals. This past winter I wanted to take a break from frequent coloring given COVID precautions and my wallet post-move. He perfectly melted my highlights towards my natural hair color so I ended up with a soft ombré **4 months** after!! (Pictured) For my latest color (also pictured), he lightened it up beautifully while also keeping in mind that I part it in the middle, to the side, and wear it back--it looks blended from any angle. (None of those ridiculous "money pieces" that look chunky and disconnected from the root mere weeks later.) Safety-minded: Yi provided private service with meticulous mask wearing throughout the pandemic. I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. Excellent vibe: Yi always welcomes you warmly to his beautifully decorated home and studio and offers you complimentary coffee, water, or tea.
