I decided to get my haircut at Salon Mizuno after a co-worker recommended this spot. Maho did an excellent job cutting my hair. Not only did she correct some damage caused by my last bad haircut, but gave me the actual haircut I wanted based on a photo I shared. Maho was very friendly, welcoming and attentive during the appointment. Got a Japanese straight perm and a cut done by the owner Yuko. I was going to be in NYC and this place popped up on yelp with great reviews so I decided to give it a try! I am from Hawai'i and I only trust Japanese stylists to do my hapa (half Japanese, half Caucasian) hair. I usually get it done in Japan and they do an excellent job so I was scared to get it done in the USA, but Yuko did a FANTASTIC job!!! My hair went from very wavy and frizzy to smooth and sleek... what every girl wants :) Also, how quickly she finished my hair. The entire process only took about 4 hours for both cut and color. Highly recommend this cozy salon where they really take time for you. Yuko's personality is AMAZING and hilarious, she's very genuine and caring and she is definitely somebody I would love to see again the next time I'm in NYC! Friendly, professional and skilled are just some of the words that describe this quaint salon. I had my hair straightened - they treated my hair to a conditioning masque before and after the straightening treatment, which gave me silky smooth hair. The straightening treatment was effective. The entire process took 3 hours exactly. They offered me coffee and tea. They were gentle throughout the process. They even gave my hair a trim, taking off the exact amount I requested (not much!). I plan on returning in three months for another trim. read more

I was born and raised in NYC and it took 36 years for me to finally find the perfect place to get my hair cut. Salon Mizuno is perfect. Yuko is amazing. She's smart, sweet and perfect at doing either small or big changes. She's supportive in what choices you make for a cut but will give her advice when you ask. Yuko owns the shop. She'll remember you next time you come in. It is such a great neighborhood place. And the prices are so reasonable! About $75 for a hair cut for women. And that was a real cut with bangs. While Yuko was on vacation I saw June and he was also fabulous. He trimmed my bangs and put so much thought and care into it! I felt like I had a whole new look! Bang trims for about $11. I've also seen a bunch of kids getting their hair cut there. Moms getting their cuts and then their kids. Highly, highly recommended. read more

The people here and the salon itself are gems! Maho is F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. and I thank her so much for her excellent care and creating a fun atmosphere each time that I've visited. I stumbled upon Salon Mizuno by accident about a year ago, and it's the only place I'll go as long as I'm in NYC. The hair cuts are superb and when they grow out, they still look great. I've had long and mid-length hair cuts, plus a coloring. Not only that, the salon is a beautifully decorated and intimate space featuring lovely wood finishings and local art. The feel: I love that this place looks and feels nothing like a salon with antiques, artwork and photographs throughout it makes the feel very cozy and very friendly. The minute you walk in you're greeted with a smile an offered a treat and/or a beverage. Yuko (the owner) treats her clients like friends rather then just a customer. She remembers names and stories right away, like any good hair stylist should but she's more genuine than any others I've ever gone to. Yuko also uses her salon to promote local artists by showcasing their artwork on her walls and having small gatherings when the shop is closed like a gallery would, not to collect money but to help the artists. Every month or so you'll see a different charity she is advocating for, this month, I believe it is the Humane Society. She doesn't push people to donate either, she just has an area where you can give with information about the charity and maybe some artwork that is being auctioned off for it. She has a huge heart. The Hair: I have very thick, curly and very hard to manage hair and it's extremely difficult to find a salon that can tame it and look and feel good without making me sit there for 2+ hours. I'm usually put under a dryer for 45 minutes after my hair has been rolled and then sent to have it blow dried by a very hot blow dryer. Needless to say, my hair is quite damage after that and only sometimes does my hair look and feel good therefore I tend to stick with the natural look. I never wait here, I first go to Jennifer or to Yuki who washes my hair and doesn't use conditioner but instead this wonderful treatment along with the best scalp massages. I then sit down to have Yuko start my hair, never rollers or under a dryer (really?), she just uses a blow dryer that doesn't even seem to be that hot and then lightly goes over my hair with a ceramic flat iron ( if I want it very straight). I'm always amazed at how nicely my hair comes out and how it seems to last for days. And I'm never in there for more than an hour and rarely even that. How does she do it?! I've only had my hair done by Yuki once but he is amazing as well and Jennifer, the receptionist and hair washer just as amazing. Everyone here is very friendly and very efficient and although I'd like to keep this place my little secret (so that I can always get an appointment when I want it) it would truly be a shame not to share this others. read more

Maho is now my go-to hair stylist. She's patient and careful with each scissor stroke. No clippers/buzzers used at all. The place is also great at giving children haircuts. We brought our 10-month old boy, who can't sit still, to Mizuno and Yuko was very patient and careful cutting his hair. read more

Choosing the right hair style & make-up for one's wedding is super important. Yuki was amazing! My hair is typically pin straight and and I don't usually wear make-up. I wanted to look like a better version of myself but still look like me. Yuki aka "the miracle worker" in my eyes, managed to do that. My hair was still wavy at the end of the night. People to this day ask me where I got my hair done for my wedding. Because he does such a great job, I go to him for my regular cuts and color. My hair looks the best it has ever looked. I live in queens, but the work, professionalism and level of service is worth the trip to Brooklyn! It doesn't hurt that you end up looking like a million bucks without costing a million bucks. read more

I moved to Hong Kong recently and was just back in NY for a visit. Popped by to say hi to Yuko, not for a haircut since I didn't have time. Immediately, Yuko looked at my hair and took out her scissors to cut the "uneven" bits. (I had gone to another hairdresser in HK since I was away without a haircut for over 6 months already.) That's how much she and the staff at Salon Mizuno care about the quality of their service. Will definitely book a proper appointment next time I'm in town. My entire family came to the Mizuno salon for makeup and hair for my sister wedding which we had a wonderful experience for one of the most important days of our family. I can say that everybody and specially Yuki made my sister and all of us look beautiful and elegant for such a special day. I just wanted to say thank you to this salon for working with me in a creative and caring way. I really love my assymetrical hair cut that I needed quite badly (as my curls had grown out quite a bit). Everyone there was very kind and great to talk to. And I felt like I would happy to go back there in the future. Wonderful service. It was good to make an appointment beforehand, dropping in was not such a good idea in the heat of the summer. I was a bit nervous about trying a new salon in my neighborhood because primarily what was being promoted on facebook were fancy updo's and wedding styling for girls.
