Before seeing a concert at the Salt Shed in Chicago, we stopped at the food trucks lined up just inside the fence. They had a small variety of foods and I settled on DonerMen. Their food truck doesn't offer everything on the restaurant's menu; there were about 9 items. I decided to order the Currywurst Mit Pommes, something I never tries before. It consists a bed of of "crisp" fries, what I think was a boiled and sliced bratwurst, and a sweet curry sauce. I also had a can of Coke. You can't do anything to mess up a Coca-Cola so we'll skip that. The people working the food truck know their stuff. They offer gluten-free and vegan items for those of us who need the options. They were also friendly and patient. The Currywurst was just okay. The crisp fries were soggy from the sauce. And I wish the brat was grilled instead of boiled. It would have made for a better meal. The concept is good. I've heard many good reviews but I think they were mainly the restaurant and not the food truck. Stumbled in here before a kickball game nearby, and it was an instant hit that we came back to all season! The bartender (who might also be the owner?) is super cool and has a great knowledge of their beers on tap. The food is GREAT as well. The vibes in the bar are perfect - the front room has a great mural and always a movie playing, plus endless board games. The back room has old gaming systems like an N64 which is a blast. I've never had German food before, and this was phenomenal! I sat down on a Monday at 11:00, one hour before the kitchen closed. My friends and I ordered a lot: pretzel, poutine (fries), chicken kebab, buffalo wings, curry wurst and veggie wurst. All of it was absolutely delicious and had generous portions. So I've heard about this place for a while but never ordered from them. Then I was searching the delivery apps and found their food. I swore they were a German place but their food is more Mediterranean. I ordered the Doner Guys Bowl over rice which was chicken over rice with tzatziki, spicy harissa, lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, a wild pickle, and onions. It was a solid bowl. Delicious flavors and very filling. The chicken was spiced so good. I would've wanted more tzatziki but it was overall solid. I also ordered a pretzel which I guess is the German part? It was still fairly warm by the time it got to me which was awesome - warm pretzels cool quick by nature of the food so I was pleasantly surprised when I didn't have to warm it up. Delivery though GrubHub was super fast. They said an hour but it was more like 40 minutes. The one thing that prevents me from doing 5 stars is their menu isn't really that balanced - they don't really have many starters that complement their menu. And the hummus starter is $10! The story behind DönerMen is beautifully serendipitous: they haphazardly decided to mix Indian spices with classic German fare to create a street food style mashup dubbed the Cürrywurst. They also serve wraps, bowls, and a delicious-looking poutine; we opted for their signature cürrywurst ($9), which consisted of their pork and veal sausage over fries, topped with their curry spice sauce. The curry flavors don't entirely go hand in hand with the savory sausage and the slightly sweet sauce, so you end up with something in between that's not spicy enough to be entirely curry, but not traditional enough to be familiar. The sausage itself was juicy and satisfying, making a hearty snack. On a logistical note, I did appreciate the composition that was fairly easy to eat with a fork, without an excessive amount of toppings that spew everywhere as is possible with any form of grandiose fries. Altogether, it's an interesting concept but didn't quite pan out to be particularly life-changing--I wouldn't call it the best or wurst (pun intended) fusion ever. I tried DonerMen when I was at Christkindle Market in Chicago. After perusing most of the food shops, I decided on DonerMen because it seemed to offer the DonerBox that no other shop had. It boasted a mix of fries, veggies, and meat - the healthiest meal I could find there. Upon receiving it, I was disappointed that it came in a small container that could barely hold the contents inside. This made it very difficult to carry to my table and I lost some toppings along the way. This is definitely a food you cannot eat while moving and needs two hands to transport. Once I was seated, I was excited to dig in. Again, the container was small and I wasn't able to really mix anything up and had to eat from the top/outside in. Other than the sauce on top, I was not wowed by anything in this dish. The fries were not very well made (it was cold but not sure if it came out that way or my 15 feet walk cooled it down in Chicago winter... Ontop of having difficult eating it out of a small container, I felt that this wasn't a good value. For $11, I could have gotten a better deal with other offerings at Christkindle Market. I want to like them more because the concept sounds good...I may try their kebab if I ever run into them again and don't have any better options... read more

Spit-roasted chicken, Greek goat yoghurt tzatziki, spicy red pepper harissa, tomato-cucumber shirazi, wild pickle, sumac sprinkle, fries, and red lettuce salad. Delicious, right? I don't know how it's possible that this meal had next to no flavor. It was so disappointing. The fries were old and mealy, the chicken was dry and flavorless, and the whole thing was completely boring. The harissa had a nice bite but there was hardly any of it on the chicken. The truck itself will certainly catch your eye and the menu (large w/ big pictures and helpful descriptions) helps draw you in. The staff was... fine; not overly friendly but not bad at all. I had the Döner Box and it was very tasty. It had chicken and lettuce and fries, tomatoes and onions and... I don't even know what else was in there but it was pretty tasty. In fact, the sauces help to add flavor but it's the ingredients that really make this thing. The one issue I have, and I have this issue with almost every food truck, is that the prices do not seem to reflect the portion size you receive. The Döner Men truck is no stand out from the others: tasty food but small portion for the price. My lunch appetite is usually very sizable and that tends to keep me away from most food trucks. Every once in a while I give a new one a shot but, like my experience here, the visits are few and far between because the food is usually not insanely outstanding that I'd want to double-down on the order. Yes working near the Sears (Willis) Tower is great because you can get some food truck traffic around here during lunchtime. The colorfully decorated DönerMen truck serves its take on German street food. I tried a Döner Box, loaded with all sorts of ingredients. In fact this böx öf fööd is a microcosm of my "balanced" diet in general, a pile of both "good and healthy" and "good but not that good for you" ingredients. There is the salad portion with lettuce, onion, tomato and cucumber and a generous portion of shredded roasted chicken, and somewhere in the box is a heap of fries, plus tzatziki yogurt sauce. It is a good and filling lunch box for sure. I think next time I will want to try the currywurst, which really is German street food to me. read more

The currywurst is pretty good, but if you're looking for more variety (I.e. veggies, sauces, etc) the dönerguys bowl is a more appealing. The dönerguys bowl is served over rice, but if you prefer you can order a dönerbox which has all the same ingredients (chicken, pickle, harissa, tzatziki, lettuce, cabbage, etc.) over fries. The only downside to this place is that a side order of fries is $6. The curry sauce served with them is delicious but at the end of the day, it's still just fries. read more

One of my favorite food trucks that stops by Columbus and Randolph. I hadn't seen it in a while but it stopped by today! My coworker and I got the currywurst. The sausage that it comes with is always so tender and juicy. The curry has a really great flavor and is not too overpowering. If you eat it immediately, the fries are also crispy and you have a nice contrast in texture as you're going through it. A couple of my coworkers also got the Doner Box and they both loved it. Though the price may seem a little steep for the type of fare you're receiving. you definitely get full after eating it. It is sad to say that what these guys offer is by no stretch even close to the German/Berlin original. While I understand that there is room for international interpretation of the food + americanization of certain foods, you shouldn't advertise to sell "iconic German street food and cuisine" especially the famous Curry Wurst that tasted nothing like the original. Overall both the Döner and the Curry Wurst lacked the bold flavor and texture you will experience from the Original, while the Doner was bland and flavorless. Back I am to the never ending search to find food close or similar to the taste of Berlin Germany as Dönermen did not deliver. So good. Zehr gut is probably more accurate. It's hard to miss the colorful and elaborate Döner Men Truck on Chicago's street. The explosion of flavor in your mouth when you order confirms that the Döner Men isn't just another fly-by-night trendy truck. They've got the goods. I often struggle with what to pick from a food truck but when I saw the döner kebab fries the choice was easy. Finishing this mountain of flavor was not, on the other hand, as easy. Large pieces of flavorful chicken, hand-cut crispy fries, bright fresh salad with a light dressing. The biggest surprise was the goat cheese tzatziki sauce. I am not a goat cheese person but this was awesome and that says a lot. The truck also features curry wurst and a spicy curry sauce as well as the döner kebab in a wrap and salads. The only thing that is different from an authentic late-night German Dönerladen was the fresh vegetables. The decor of the truck caught my eye so I decided to grab this for a quick meal outside my work building. Nice down to earth dudes with super quick service. I got the Döner box just because it seemed like it was a good combination of everything they had to offer. I am still not really sure what I ate, but it was pretty good. The truck seems to be fusion-y with German and Mediterranean like foods. The Döner box had flavorful chicken kebob, fresh crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, delicious crispy fries, and homemade white and red sauce. All on point and blends perfectly together. Also, they lay the food in the box in a picture perfect manner (important for us asian food pic takers) The portions and price are typical of what you would expect from a Chicago food truck. It's about half the portion for the same price as Benjyehuda (reminds me of a box from there but cleaner and with less mushy vegetables). The Döner box portion is actually a perfect size since Benjye bowls can be split into two meals. If they were the same price I would choose Donermen over that any day. read more

Had a kebab just now that was flavorless aside from the taste of the wrap and tomato, with dry chicken that seemed to have several small chunks of bone in it. Used to be that it was a tasty meal, even if it wasn't the most authentic take on Mustafa's in Berlin (which I've eaten at a few times and am pretty sure is the inspiration here), but this was downright bad.
