My mother embarrassingly cut my hair through middle school. However, the summer before high school, she finally agreed to let me get a salon cut! At the time, Dvir was working at another salon in Brooklyn. I left the salon feeling beautiful and emboldened. Since then, I have followed Dvir from one salon to the next, finally seeing him transform his craft into this impeccably clean and elegant storefront of his own! I return every few months to let him transform my straight and stringy hair into this beautiful bouncy blonde mane. It's been almost 11 years and Dvir is still the only person I will let near my hair. His cuts are incredible and he can be counted on for his superb advice as well! That reminds me... I ADORE DVIR. First of all, he's a true artist who has honed impressive skills around the world, from Egypt and South Africa to England...It was so fun to visit with him about adventures in other cities and travels abroad. And: this seasoned artist GETS IT. I have very thick and unruly hair that has been botched and butchered a bazillion times--so I have to give my "spiel" to any new stylist about the fact that layers can make me look like a broom-head if done even a little bit wrong and that I cannot, in any way, shape or form, get some kind of bangs. Dvir won my heart when he said the words, "I wouldn't LET you do that to your hair!" I immediately grinned and knew I was in expert hands. Not only did Dvir use the exact tools and techniques to smooth my mangy-mane (so few stylists understand just how to shape really thick strands so that a cut has fluidity and flow, not just a simple trim--) but he is also quite intuitive...Dvir has a gentle soul and really cares about his clients. I felt as if I had not only walked out with a sleek style, but--through his genuine interest and inquisitive concern--my soul had been uplifted too. This salon is a Brooklyn gem. I had a haircut with Jamie. I told him that I really liked the way my hair was growing out, but that I needed to clean it up a little bit. I have extremely thick hair, and Jamie went in and thinned out a lot of it for me. He managed to trim the ends just enough so that it wasn't dead at the bottom, but there was no noticeable change in length. No one noticed that I got a haircut, except for me. A few weeks ago I saw a girl with the coolest haircut. I asked her where she got her haircut and she told me to go to Dvir Salon and to make sure to ask for Leslie. And so I did. Leslie gave me THE CUTEST short bob haircut ever!!! I felt so chique and was incredibly happy with the way Leslie cut my hair! The overall experience at Dvir was good, Leslie made the experience EXCELLENT and then some. I have gotten many many compliments on my hair, even from total strangers. I found out just now that Leslie is no longer at Dvir Salon :( I called Dvir salon and asked them where I can find Leslie but they did not want to give me any information. I came here in December on a Friday evening, and even though I had an appointment, I had to wait 45 minutes to be seen. The dye used on my roots didn't quite sting, but it certainly tingled, and afterwards I found there were places toward the back of my crown where hair had been singed and fallen out after an inch or two. I'm giving this a two instead of a one because it is a very comfortable and attractive salon, and I clearly caught them on an exceptionally busy day; but personally, I will definitely not be going back. read more

I have had wonderful experiences at Dvir salon at least 4 times before. But when I came in today, my hairdresser, I think her name was Molly, cut off about 6 or 7 inches, when I really only wanted 3 or 4 cut off, and she couldn't even cut my bangs straight. Honestly, the shortness doesn't bother me as much because most hairdressers cut off too much, but the fact that she couldn't even cut my bangs straight was really disappointing. And for a $70 haircut, I expect better than uneven bangs, and 3 inches less hair than I asked to be cut off. Unfortunately, because of this one bad experience, I do not think that I can pay to have my hair cut at Dvir salon ever again. I trusted them, and I have had a wonderful experience every other time I have gone. If you go there, I recommend asking for someone other than Molly. read more

I have long, brown hair. It's a little wavy, but I wear it straight, and, well, that's it. I don't use products. I don't dye it. It's long and brown and frequently up in a ponytail. Period. And while this is a truth I've come accept, every single hair stylist I've gone to in this city can't seem to do the same. "Let's chop it off!" one said, while another took it upon herself to add bangs. (As for me, I invested in a lifetime supply of headbands.) The last stylist I spoke to even suggested I go for a cut reminiscent of Victoria Beckham. Methinks not. All that changed at Dvir Hair Salon. I walked in and consulted with Dina, who couldn't have been lovelier. Instead of scolding me for my horrendous ends (seriously, I hadn't had a hair cut in, oh, six months -- wince!), she actually volunteered I keep it long, and suggested adding in a few long layers too. Game on, Dina. After a hair wash complete with theee world's best scalp massage of all time, she took her time making sure every snip was perfect, and all the while, engaged me in pleasant conversation about everything from Brooklyn to Cincinnati to pets. (Is it weird I was thrilled the first question wasn't, "What do you do for a living?") As she was blowing my hair dry, Dvir came in! He really lit up the room and made everyone smile with stories of his new baby and a box of Ferrero Rocher. Does it get any nicer? I felt like Dina really took her time and everyone in the salon made me feel incredibly welcome. There's no way I'm waiting another six months get my hair cut again -- I can't wait to go back, and suggest you do the same. read more

After reading all the Yelp reviews I was really excited to schedule a coloring at Dvir. The receptionist who greeted me was very friendly and as was my stylist (I can't remember his name) who sat me down right away in his chair to discuss what I wanted to do. I have very short hair and had been getting it highlighted but if you have short hair you know that you have to get it cut twice as often and well I was wasting money on highlights that I kept chopping off. I decided I wanted to simply dye my hair to my natural color, an ash dirty blonde. Together my stylist and I picked a color we thought would be great. It looked just like my natural color, I was excited. He then asked if I also wanted him to trim my hair. I figured if he had the time I would kill two birds at one time. I explained that it had been a while since I had a professional cut my hair ( my boyfriend trims it for me) and that I just wanted it shaped up, I already have hair shorter then most boys and I had been trying to grow it out. This is where things started to go wrong... He started trimming and I guess because I was feeling sick (I had a horrible cold when I went for my appointment) I did not pay much attention to what he was doing. After trimming for what seemed like an eternity he applied the color. At this point I started to realized that I had VERY little hair left, almost buzzed. While trying not to freak out I decided to see what my hair looked like after the color was set and my hair was dry and styled. Not much better at all. Not only did I have hair shorter then I have every had in my entire life but my hair was a dark chocolate brown, nowhere close to my natural color. My hair was so short and my color so dark that my scalp was actually showing through. It was awful. It's only hair but I have never felt so insecure about my appearance. I'm tall, 5'10 and with hair this short I am often being confused for a man. It has been 4 weeks since my appointment and I've been stewing about writing a review. The hair cut I did receive, while it was not what I wanted or expected is growing out well. I do get compliments on my short hair but I feel as though I am back to square one in terms of trying to grow it out. The color I had to fix, it was just too harsh. Most women in my situation would have been mortified. I rolled with it since my hair was short to begin with but family members and friends were all stunned to see my hair that short, and not in a good way. I did have to convince my boyfriend, which took a lot, from heading over to the salon to ask my stylist why he gave me a "man's haircut." This is coming for a boy who likes girls with shorter hair. Maybe this all stemmed from some sort of communication error or because I was not paying enough attention because I was trying to relax. Either way I was very unhappy. This is my first Yelp review -- I was spurred to post after reading the negative review about Laura below. Laura is my girl! I've been going to her for about 9 months and I think she's one of the best stylists I've ever had. She is the ONLY stylist to ever give me a cut that works with the natural thick, wavy texture of my hair. I have never been able to work with my natural wave, but Laura made it happen. She talked me out of cutting my hair super short and suggested a chin-length, 20s style wavy bob. Now, my hair takes me 5 minutes to style and gets me lots of compliments. I'm a happy camper. Laura also has a knack for remembering exactly how she cut your hair the last time and also what you talked about. The salor itself is cozy and welcoming, with free cookies, coffee and tea, and a resident lap-dog. The prices are reasonable ($60 cut, $60 single process) and the staff is friendly and laid-back. All in all, a fabulous salon. read more

I had been to Dvir a couple of times before the moved and had great haircuts at a great price ($25 for a men's cut). The stylists would really pay attention to what you wanted and would do a really good job. I have been 3 times since the move and I have decided that I will not go back. The service has deteriorated, I told the stylist that I had been travelling and gotten a bad cut where he had used a razor on the sides and back of my head and that I did not like this. She then proceeded to use a razor on the sides and back of my head. I paid $40 for a $15 haircut. The salon is nice but the stylists have changed and are much worse. It's an Ok salon but it used to be great. read more

I was offered a beer or cold glass of water, I was given a divine scalp massage along with an invigorating shampooing of my hair (the staff even asked if the water was alright. I love that). Agatha gave me a dope ass haircut, and chatted about my weekend plans. I was going to a "Too Much Gin" party, so she insisted that I swipe some fresh mint and rosemary from their backyard, where they had an amazing mural painted by Peelander Yellow. I'm one of those people who tends to go to a hair salon once, have a "meh" experience, and then move on to the next. I'm low-maintenance but I usually know generally what I want, I don't want to pay a lot, and I expect a little bit of a consultation. Not much...but maybe a minute or two of suggestions or gentle coaxing. If you're in the business of hair, you should know what looks good on someone, be able to size them up a little, and suggest something based on their features, style preference, and routine. Most hairstylists are afraid to give their clients something other than exactly what they ask for. I've gone to Laura about four times now (after my last "meh" experience at Boy Luv Girl, which is very overpriced) and even though my hair doesn't always turn out amazing, it's always solid and she's really open to making suggestions and working with my features. She's right 95% of the time. And she works within what I say I want--nothing outlandish. The price is a flat fee (it's either $60 or $65 for women...I forget), I never have to wait too long, and the shampoo/massage is glorious. I'd recommend this place for sure. read more

I went because tit's right down the street from me. I stay because nobody does it better! I have been to countless salons in NYC and this is by far been the best. When I first went to Dvir, it was for an impromptu haircut. A MAJOR haircut. I was going from mid-back length to a bob cut. Super scary, but Jill did more than an amazing job cutting my hair and being sensitive to how big of a step this was for me. We looked at different cuts and she explained why a certain cut would or would not be good for me because of my hair type. This is super important because I've been my own victim of saying "I was this haircut!" and the stylist does it only for it to come out horrible and for them to tell me "its because of your hair type." I've learned from coming here that a good stylist will be realistic about what you can do with your hair WHILE giving you the effect you want. Recently, I went back to get my hair color (a mousey dark brown) lightened. This time, I used Agatha as my colorist. Again, I brought in a lot of pictures of what I wanted and she took the time to explain to me what would actually look good on me and why certain looks would not or were not what I thought they were. She began the process and when I was done, it looked beautiful, although, it was still darker than I thought it might be. I decided the next day to call back and see what I could do and they so nice and understanding about bringing me in again the next day to lighten it even more. Both times were gorgeous but the second time was EXACTLY what I wanted. The girl who shampooed me was super nice, in fact the entire staff was very hands on to all the customers from the minute I walked in the door. They made you feel comfortable and like they appreciated you being there. I think I'll be sticking with these professionals for a very long time! read more

If you are very fussy and peevish about your hair salon, like me, I highly recommend Dvir. Naho cut and colored my hair today. The highlights are very natural looking, I look like I just went on a sunny vacation. The cut is a bit conservative and very precise, but I wasn't feeling overly confident in explaining what I wanted this afternoon and she mostly figured it out for herself. I would have preferred to walk out with a rock star hair cut, but I didn't tell her this and ended up with good trim. Honestly, I had a bit of a bad day before arriving for my appointment. The receptionist gave me a good cappuccino and cookies while I waited. The little shiatsu with pink and purple bangs curled up beside me on the couch and promptly fell asleep making me feel generally loved. This is a comfortable, very clean, well decorated salon with kind, competent, careful stylists. Their prices are the same as many salons with less talented stylists. Go! read more

I've waited quite awhile to write this review - first because I was so disappointed, then because I second-guessed my disappointment, and then because I forgot. But here's my story: I hadn't had my long straight hair cut in an embarrassing amount of time, but it was generally healthy and I just wanted it colored and trimmed a bit with added layers to make it look like more of a style, as opposed to post-college plain long hair. I called and asked who I should see, and after explaining all this the nice woman on the other end of the phone said I should definitely see Nico. I booked the appointment and couldn't wait during the two weeks, imagining how awesome I would feel with my new hairdo. I rush over there after work on a weeknight, in the rain, and get there just in time for my appointment. I'm then told that they only have time to give me either a cut or color, and it will be with Jackie. I reminded them that I booked for both specifically with Nico, but no go. Someone messed up and they half-apologized. Now I read yelp reviews before I chose Dvir, and the only stylist I knew I didn't want was Jackie. So now I'm torn because I REALLY needed/wanted my hair done, it's a Friday night, I've waited forever for an appointment, and she's whisking me into her chair. I'm so hesitant, I even get up at one point and go to the front to re-schedule. But she somehow convinces me to stay. She was nice and she said she would squeeze in a cut and color (oh thanks, since that's what I booked...). And I felt really uncomfortable saying hey lady, everyone on yelp says you suck. So I stayed. We talked for a long time about the color I wanted, she seemed to get it, and then dyed it 7 shades darker than we agreed. My medium brown hair was now almost-black. I asked for long layers, she insisted on cutting some side bangs to frame my face. I thought that sounded nice. Instead, she cut two chunks on either side of my face that hit right around my cheekbone. They did not look purposeful - they looked like growing out bangs. I told her I never can blow it out the way they do in the salon, so I wanted her to do it the way I would. Nope. She spent forever blowing it into big soft round curls - which immediately deflated in my painfully straight hair within 5 minutes of leaving the salon - in the rain. Needless to say, I was super disappointed. I shelled out over $250 for a crappy hairdo. I got home and my fiance smiled and asked if I meant to dye it black :( But, a few days later, I managed to make it look the way I wanted, and I've done it like that every day since and gotten plenty of compliments. So I don't know. Would I go back? Absolutely not. But in the end, it wasn't as TERRIBLE as I thought that night. As another reviewer said, Jackie is a really sweet girl. She's working full time and going to school full time, and I enjoyed talking to her for the most part - ok I guess not all that much, but I'm trying here. She just not so great at hair. I feel bad leaving poor reviews, but I was extremely disappointed with my experience. It's been 6 months since I've been there and I still can't believe the haircut I was given. I can't remember the guy's name who cut my hair but he had only been in NYC for two years and I told him exactly what I didn't want (I've got straight, heavy hair, which does not cut well with crappy layers) and he gave me crappy layers, but they were worse b/c they were uneven and just horrible. He basically did exactly what I told him not to do. Had to have an old friend chop 6 inches off my hair two weeks later to get it corrected. It sucks b/c I really wanted to love this salon and have it be my new spot. I think the owner needs to vet his employees better before hiring. The wife finally gave the go-ahead to allow someone to cut her hair short, and Leslie gave her a sassy cut so wifey's beautiful face is visible again. The cash was about u$125 for the transformation, and the cut is so much more stylin' than we got at one of the salons locally. Stay far away. Stylist brutalized my hair - chopping off way (way) more than I asked. She kept yelling at me that the reason she had to keep cutting more off was I was moving too much. I am a 37 year old woman who has been getting her hair cut for oh, 35 years. Know how to sit still and have never had an issue with a stylist not being able to cut my hair. I am very picky with my hair and no matter where i get it cut, I'll come back and be less than thrilled when my wife asks me what i think of it. That wasn't the case after Jill cut my hair. I don't know what she did, but she did it right. It's never grown in so perfectly - which says a lot since it is unruly, thick and wavy. Usually there are stray curls but it is perfectly contained. Somehow she managed the beast that is my locks! Not only that, but the price was beyond reasonable and it took her less than 30 minutes! What more can you ask for? read more

Dvir is a stylish, non-pretentious neighborhood salon with friendly staff and a pleasant ambiance. Unlike some obnoxious hipster salons in boerum hill that blast house music *cough* salon de quartier *cough*, Dvir has a very relaxing atmosphere and genuine customer-oriented service. I had a lovely cut done by Dina and she gave me suggestions for blow drying and maintenance. This is my 2nd time at Dvir (can't rember who i had the first time) but both times, i was pleased and particularly appreciated the prices (60 bucks--very appropriate). These weren't he BEST haircuts i've had in my life. not life changing or shockingly creative. but overall i'd say definitely an above-average experience, and certainly the only neighborhood salon i'd recommend :) read more

I saw Jamie on Saturday, and he was fantastic. He knew exactly what to do with my wavy/curly hair, and gave me a fabulous cut that even outdid the picture I brought in. Add in bonus points for zero wait time and his friendly, professional demeanor; he was totally willing to answer questions and was happy to work with what I wanted. When someone told me how much they liked Dvir Salon I thought to give them a try. I don't remember the name of the stylist who cut my hair but there were some fundamental issues with her that were noticeable. The first was her lack of friendliness. I admit that she's isn't there to make friends with her clients but there was an obvious distance that she kept. The second was her lack of understanding of hair or rather Asian hair. I had told her what I wanted, which wasn't a complicated cut and towards the end of the session I realized that she was giving me a K-Pop type of hair style with a deep side part and curling the ends of my hair. I immediately stopped her and told her this wasn't what I wanted. I had asked for some layers. Her reply was that I didn't have enough hair for layers. Um, what? Every other place I had been to the stylists knew how to cut my hair, noticed that I have natural waves, and have told me that my hair isn't considered thin. I don't have thick volumes of hair like some Southeast Asian women but really? I was denied layers because of a lack of fullness? Third, this big mistake by her convinced me that I was given a stylist with extreme lack of experience. I've had better hair cuts from Aveda's student stylists. And because I made her fix her mistake I noticed that a few other young stylists were exchanging rolling eyes with her. I left her a tip out of normal courtesy. But I will not return. read more

I got my hair cut and Dvir and it was a great cut. My hair was really long, probably cut off 8+ inches and Carrie styled and cut it exactly the way I wanted it. She followed any directions I had on how I usually wear and dry my hair. She did a really good job, on the cut alone I would give 5 stars easily. Only subtracted a star because it is super pricey. Definitely worth it because I got a significant cut but when I wanted to get a trim couple months later it was still going to be around $80 and for me thats a little steep. But if you have the cash to spend, I would definitely go back to Dvir. read more

ATTENTION ALL BROOKLYN BLONDES! This review is so beyond overdue! Naho has been my stylist for years. She is literally the first stylist on the east coast that I have found that gets how to do blonde. I know, it seems like it should be easy, but it's not! Anyone who aspires to prolong the blonde that they once were as a kid knows what I am talking about. I've lived in NYC for 15 years and recently moved to Miami last year. She is the only one who gets the tone of blonde just right. I have had women stop me all over the world to ask me where I get my color done. I have had women at Barney's in New York stop me to ask. So you know that means something! Not only is she an amazing colorist for blondes, she's also a great stylist. And just an all around amazing person. I can't say enough about her. I see that some reviews here complain about Naho's prices going up. I noticed, but she is so worth it. It's still so unbelievably reasonable. But I also want her to stay at Dvir forever so that I can have her. Though truly, she is the quality of colorist who could name her price and be at the top of the industry. read more

I have trouble styling my flimsy, fine Asian hair but after her attentive yet quick 25 minute cut, she suggested a few tips on how to blow dry my hair to make it look more voluminous! Wooooot! I generally hate having my hair cut... it takes me ages to build trust, I don't do barber shops and I'm not good at telling the stylist what I want so it's all a bit of a chore.. Because of this I let my hair grow far too much between visits.. With hair making it's way below my shirt collar the time had come to visit dvir for the 3rd time. Thank goodness for Dvir - it took me 3 years in Brooklyn to find a hair salon I was really happy with. It's all about the C's with this place: clean, consistent, cool vibe, and close to my apartment. I've gone there for the past year, and Jackie always does a great job on my uber thick, straight hair.
