Yay I found a place that I can trust my trusses with. I got an adorable cut that is growing out even cuter...so that's where the real talent is. I'm the kinda girl that doesn't like my hair styled too much at the end. So, when someone reaches for some product and a big roller brush I start thinking " cool!, my hair is never going to look like this again", but the ladies here are really attentive and laid back. They will listen to your every whim about what you want, without judgement, which is more than I can say for some bitchy stylists. I just got a really great cut from Margaret at Dvir. As we all know, even a trim can be traumatic, but she livened up my style, added great, healthy looking layers, and didn't skimp on the bangs (usually stylists refuse to cut bangs as short as I want 'em, for fear that they'll get in trouble). She was really nice and friendly, and the salon is clean and stylish. The wash-girls do a great job including a divine scalp massage, and they have a nice selection of teas and biscuits while you're waiting! ps-It's totally affordable! Had a haircut here by Naho on Halloween. Wow it was so much fun! All the employees had some sort of costume on, but I think Naho's wins the prize. She was the cutest red devil! Oh and she does great cuts. She was very nice, and friendly, and the atmosphere was very laid back and relaxed. The salon itself has a very spacious and airy feel to it. I'm super sad about this place. I came here to get my hair styled in an updo the other day and although the people and ambiance was nice, the style wasn't. I have super curly hair so dropped by in person to make make sure they could style it. I spoke to a women who said she had experience working with curly hair and could give me an updo. So, I made my appointment for the following week for a trial. Great, right? Wrong. It's not that style was terrible, it's just that I could have done it my self. After she gave me a low side bun I explained that it looked very casual and like something I could do my self and made some suggestions. She agreed and took out the bobby pins and proceeded to do the exact same thing again... The more she touched my hair the frizzy it became and she never so much and sprayed a drop of product or even water in my hair. When I got home my boyfriend asked me why I took my hair out. He thought I went to a salon, didn't like it, and then pulled my own hair back. I had to explain to him that that WAS the style. I basically spent $10 per bobby pin. Went back to DVIR over the weekend and got paired up with Jamie. I wanted to cut my hair back to health and grow out my face framing long bangs. To be honest, I think he knew what I wanted before I sat down (maybe it was the fact that I dress like every other 27 year old white blonde in New York) He listened, bartered with me about length based on the overall health of my hair, and generally kicked ass. Bonus - got a killer blow out at the end of it. Some stylists just "get it". I might add that just like the last visit, I spent almost no time with my face in a magazine, and it was not the kind of chatter that makes you wish they would shut up and leave you alone to enjoy the pleasure of having your hair played with. The staff is genuinely friendly and I was almost sad it was over. The only downside of the haircut was that I had nowhere fabulous to go afterward and show off my money well spent. LESLIE! I have been in Brooklyn now for 2 years, and she has been so great. Even when she left Salon Bohemia, i followed her here, because well she can deal with my neurosis. I have thick dark brown hair. I like having thick hair, when any hairdresser suggests thinning it, i know its time to find a new stylist. It used to be curlier but now it's more of a wave, pretty manageable, the only tough portion of my haircut is the drying which is a long process due to the amount of hair i have. i like my hair length anywhere between below the chin and slightly below my shoulders. she listens everytime. knows what i want. and is also nice, even if she is bored by my banter, she listens. ah the glory of the hair dressers chair, never a need to go to the shrink. so yea, too short my face looks fat, too long, i looklike a horse, and she gets it. the salon itself is cute. love the dog. everyone is very nice, and of course they all have great hair, which is a good sign. but really it's about having a good stylist, and leslie knows whats up. read more

If you need a good last minute cut in the neighborhood this is the salon for you. You'll get a quality cut no matter who does it. They're convenient, quick and friendly. You can enjoy a cappuccino while waiting for your stylist. Though the prices here are considered fair for the area, I will never get used to paying $70 for a cut and blow-dry. Dvir and his staff are awesome. Each visit here is like a trip to a magical village, and comes complete with your choice of coffee/tea, an interesting music selection, an adorable dog with silky soft fur, and lots of jokes and banter among the staff and clientele. The place is so small and comfortable that conversations often end up involving everyone. Dvir does a great job with my hair and he's saved me more than once by squeezing me in at the last moment. Sad. A month ago my sister and I made an appointment to get our hair done for a wedding. When we arrived at the salon the vibe was already off. The receptionist had some weird annoyed attitude and my sister and I felt really unwelcome from the start. Then, our hair. The girl who did mine was fine. Just ok. She didn't do exactly what I wanted (it would've probably taken her an extra 5 minutes) but my hair looked fine. Nothing I couldn't have done by myself, but it was fine. Not amazing, still frizzy, but whatever. She was in a rush. My sister's hair, though, looked worse than what my sister could've done by herself at home with a blow dryer. It was as if the girl didn't even look at my sister or the dress she was wearing when she did her hair. It looked flat, and mousy, and weird! My sister was really upset so she asked the girl to redo it. She took a curling iron and fixed it but everyone - the girl, my sister, and the receptionist, were all put out by the whole thing. It was as if everyone in the salon was annoyed with us for coming in to get our hair done and couldn't be bothered. It was really off-putting. On top of getting our hair literally just blow dried to look like we did it ourselves it cost almost $100 for both of us. Way way too expensive. I liked this place the first time, but I did not appreciate the service my sister and I received this last time so I will not be going back. read more

Yikes. I decided to come in again to Dvir after several years of spending a lot more money on cuts that I suspected were a little overpriced. I had several stylists at Dvir and all were great, so I was hopeful upon returning to them. Alla was my stylist this time and I immediately had some concerns. First, she barely spoke to me at all, just sat me in the chair and asked what I had in mind. This isn't necessarily a red flag but I like stylists who are a little more inquisitive and engaging, even offering some suggestions. I told her I wanted a cut close to my shoulders that was NOT bob and described how I typically style my hair. She basically said nothing and walked me back to wash my hair. Some of this is my fault because towards the end of the haircut I realized I was getting a bob anyways, and I didn't say anything - at that point it felt like a done deal, plus Alla's sullen demeanor didn't make it feel like she'd be helpful. But still I probably should have said something! Then she was blow drying my hair with an enormous round brush and I stopped her by saying I didn't want huge hair, normally I tried to give it some wave instead. Her response was "well this is just a haircut." Cool, thanks! She didn't seem interested in further input, either. At other places the stylists will twist strands of my hair during the blow dry process to give it some wave, and some have been kind enough to spend an extra 5 minutes with a barrel curler. It's not expected but it's a nice touch. I like that Dvir is a low-key neighborhood fixture in Boerum Hill and I hope my bad experience with Alla was a fluke. But this was the first haircut I've had where I cancelled my plans and went straight home to style my hair myself in hopes it's not THAT bad. read more

Jill gave me the best haircut ever! After cutting off 6-7 inches, I went from long layered hair to a long bob. This was my first time at Dvir, so of course I was nervous, but I showed Jill the picture of the cut once and then she got a move on. I felt so incredibly comfortable with her and confident in her skills. And to make things even better, I go to pay and its only $60! This place is a gem- really laid back but nice and clean and orderly. Plus the complementary cappuchino was pretty tasty. Oh and to be clear, I've had the cut for 5-6 days and I can style it just as nicely as she did the first night, meaning she really nailed the cut since it lies perfectly despite my lack of hairstyling skill. read more

Dvir Salon has solidified its spot as my go-to salon. The space is beautiful and the service is friendly. There is always some plate of goodies out to snack on, and they provide drinks like water and coffee while you wait. I've never had trouble getting an appointment with my preferred stylist, Carina, and I am often offered a same-day appointment. I've gone to Carina three times with three totally different needs and I've walked away more than pleased. I have color-treated, platinum blonde hair that at the time of my first visit, was really starting to strain under my decision to grow it out from a pixie on top of the harsh bleaching needed to achieve my color. My first visit, I simply had Carina clean up and reshape my over-grown, shoulder-length hair. When asked, she suggested a less harsh coloring process that she thought would still be able to achieve that pale blonde color that I was looking for. During my second visit, Carina was very frank and honest in saying that she recommended either considering a different color that didn't involve bleach or getting a shorter cut to get rid of the very dry, brittle ends that had been plaguing me for months. Fortunately, I'd already been planning to cut my hair short again, and I appreciated both her honesty and her professional advice. My third visit, I took Carina's advice and came prepared with the cut I wanted, something short on the sides and long on-top. Think a less drastic Miley Cyrus. I think short, funky cuts are where Carina really shines. She was very enthusiastic about my choice of cuts. I think she was excited to work with someone who wasn't afraid of lopping off lots of hair at once for a funky cut. Speaking as someone who has had a vast range of hair-styles, from elbow-length to bob to inch-long pixie, Carina gave me, hands down, the best hair cut I've ever had. I've never been more in love with my short hair. I would recommend Carina to anyone, but ESPECIALLY if you're looking for a snazzy, short style. read more

Thank god I have finally found my salon! I've been living in New York for about 6 years now, Brooklyn for 4 of them and had yet to find a salon that A) was affordable B) was comfortable and C) had stylists who actually listed to what you wanted and could give you a great cut. So after being butchered at Supercuts one too many times I finally bit the bullet and called Dvir salon after reading all the other reviews on here. Good lord am I glad I did!!! I first went in October '09 and saw Naho and gave her just one instruction. "I have long hair...I don't want it anymore!". And away she went. I walked out with an absolutely amazing short hair cut, felt fantastic about myself and best of all, it was only $60 (so, SO reasonable considering most places in NYC). I went back to Naho in December and was not disappointed. She cleaned up my cut, it was still super cute and I had a great Christmas back home showing off my, what people presumed to be, my very expensive New York City haircut (no one needed to know!) And here it is March and I'm on my way back. My cut was so well done that it even grew out well...I don't have the dreaded "short hair mullet". If you are in Brooklyn and need a good salon, go to Dvir. You won't be disappointed. read more

I am very serious about my hair. Dvir is my salon. I go every 4 weeks for a single process then alternate cut and highlights. It's reasonably priced and is always a great experience. I don't know what made me look them up on Yelp but after looking at the reviews I thought I'd give one myself. I find it funny that most are five stars but there are a few with one or two. After patronizing this establishment I have to think any bad experiences are isolated. Caring for your hair is a partnership with your stylist. You have to bring your ideas and understand your hair so that you can direct them into what you want. You can't expect them to figure it all out for you in such a short period of time. read more

When I went, I got a fairly drastic (for me) but basic cut from Carina, who was nice but seemed like she was not paying attention to what she was doing. I tried to convince myself otherwise for a while, but after a few days and an honest friend's confirmation, I accepted that it was totally uneven. Noticeably so, so I called to go in to get it fixed. It had been about 6 days and they gave me kind of a hard time about waiting for that long. She originally said I could have another stylist fix it but then she called back to retract that, had to be the same woman. When I went, it was less awkward than I thought it would be, and she fixed it...mostly, but it was still funky. A coworker got a really drastic cut, from about 20" of hair to super short, and was saying she thought it was uneven. I made a joke that it must have been the same place and the same stylist and lo and behold, it was Carina. Then tonight I went to a different place on the LES for a cut and she told me she once had a client try this place out when she moved to Boerum Hill who then called her crying because it was so messed up. read more

I walked into Dvir for the first time a few months back for a quick (no charge!) bang trim with Jamie -- who gave me a great trim and a quick consult on what NOT to do with my long, wavy, unruly locks. Today, Naho gave me a perfect trim and the Jane Birkin bangs of my dreams -- possibly the best bangs I've had in 8 years. And she was sweet to boot! And the receptionist gets extra points for calling ahead to ask if it was okay to move my appointment back by 15 minutes. I can name several salons that would've just made me wait. 10/10! I visited the Bond St location after I found them on Yelp - Everyone at Dvir is super friendly, it's cozy and nicely decorated, they offer complimentary drinks, and you can't beat the value. Ozzie gave me amazing blonde highlights and Bevany(??) gave the best shampoo of my life! I didn't need to tell him what I wanted, he knew the exact color. They took their time and gave outstanding service. I wish I'd found this salon four years ago when I moved here. Dvir and I are star-crossed lovers: I really WANTED to like it, but destiny is keeping us apart. It has a friendly staff and a laid-back vibe, but it's too laid-back: I spent both appointments waiting 30 minutes for my stylist to finish up her back-log. And while the stylists are young and hip, one "experimented" with a new Japanese thinning technique--on my thick mexifro--that left me looking like an anime character who put his finger in an electrical socket. Leslie, she is my fair maiden. THis review btw is like 2 months late. I moved to NY then a month later, I knew I had to chop all my hair off. Just had to. So, I called, went in the next day (what a week before xmas? 3 days before?) I told Leslie, please, help me chop it all off. I got my haircut done at Dvir for the first time yesterday because the reviews were very good. The moment I walked in the stylist was rude. He argued with me for about five minutes about the haircut I wanted. We compromised on a starting point and then when he was done I stated that I still wanted the look I had spoken about at the beginning. He told me, okay, I'll wash your hair and then do it. Once he washed my hair he rushed me back over to the chair and told me that I would have to pay before he finished my hair because it was the end of the night...? My appointment was at 6:45 and there were several other people there still being worked on and one person waiting. He made modifications to the cut but still did not complete the layers that I asked for because he repeatedly reminded me that my hair was too thin. I had already stated that I knew that but wanted to do it anyways for more volume and have previously had the same haircut done, well. Once he was done cutting he half heartedly blew out my hair... after it was completely dry because he already used a square hard backed brush to blow dry it. Said he's done and walked away without saying another word. I guess he was done with me? I've never had such an aggressive haircut in my life read more

I'm growing out a pixie, so went in for a trim. Agatha was very friendly. She advised me to wait another couple of weeks before trimming to let it grow out as quickly as possible, and I appreciated her honest advice. I ended up just doing a bleach root touch up with lavender toner. The color was extremely patchy when we washed it out the first time. I ended up having to wait almost an extra hour doing a second round of toner while Agatha was with another customer. The woman at the front desk helped apply half the first round of toner and wash my hair so she wasn't able to focus 100%, and I was left at the not very comfortable hair wash chair for several minutes while she took payment from another guest. The gendered pricing is a huge turnoff for me - men start at $40 and women at $70 even if you have super short hair. A friend recommended it, but I probably won't be back. read more

I've been here 3 times now, gotten great cuts 2 of the 3 times and a good cut the 3rd time. I've had Jackie do my hair each time, and I really like her. She is a good listener, and takes her time with the cut. The cost is $60, which is good for the area. And, there's no nickel-and-diming BS with the cut not including a blowout. When you enter and check in, the receptionist immediately offers refreshments, including water and cappucino. They may have wine later in the day (if memory serves). There's usually a plate of goodies set out in the comfy waiting area, which is very welcoming. The interior decorating is nicely done and slightly upscale - something other salons in the area cannot always say. The shampoo includes a scalp massage, which is extremely relaxing. On this aspect, too, they take their time. It is nice, and unusual in NYC, not to feel rushed. Dvir sells Moroccan Oil products, which I wanted to try but was hoping to buy a trial size version first - instead, they had some samples available for free, to try before buying. I appreciate that! I will be back and if you're in the neighborhood and needing a salon recommendation, I suggest you give Dvir a try. read more

Friendly, affordable & fabulous! What more can you ask from a neighborhood hair salon? The stylists & support staff are all super sweet & competent, and there's just a wonderful welcoming vibe from the coffee/tea offered, to the super chill doggie greeting each arrival. I have long, thick hair, but even though it took extra long to wash, cut, color & blow out I didn't feel rushed at all. They do accept walk-ins, but you'd do well to make an appointment. All in all, just an amazing experience with wonderful staff. This is it for me... I'm hooked. I'm set on my hair salon for a long time... UPDATE / ADDITION (11/30/2013): I have been coming to DVIR Salon and having Naho cut and dye my hair for about five years, so naturally I wanted her to do my wedding hair. And I was so happy I did - she did an amazing job on my hair! I had done a trial run a few months prior to my wedding day where I brought in pictures from Pinterest and magazines of what I was thinking and she did up two styles for me, one of which ended up being my wedding day style. Naho is so personable and lovely to talk with and so very talented. My hair looked beautiful and stayed in place the whole day (even after taking photos outside when it was a little windy). Two of my bridesmaids also came with me to DVIR to also get their hair done. They had other stylists, but also had a lovely experience and were happy with their styles. Ozzie knows how to cut my hair and does a great job EVERY time- especially with the blow outs afterwards! I'm always happy with the results, and I am paranoid about getting haircuts. The salon itself regularly stays on scheduled appointment times, offer you a beverage when you come in, and always have some kind of small snack in the waiting area (like small cookies, or bread and butter, etc). Products in the salon are mostly Moroccan Oil but they also have many other brands. I love having this salon just a couple of blocks from me. read more

I went to Dvir last weekend to get years of box dyes stripped from my hair. Though my stylist, Agatha, was finishing up with another client, I was offered something to drink several times. I knew removing the color wouldn't be a simple, easy process, and my stylist, Agatha, wasn't sure how much color she would be able to pull out. However, she decided to go ahead with the process, though she warned me that it would still be somewhat dark! She explained what she would do, and then my three-hour session began. I had chemicals applied and then shampooed out three times. The girl who shampooed my hair was really nice and I appreciated her asking if the water temperature was okay. After all was said and done, Agatha managed to pull more color out than she thought, and we both agreed that it looked good but needed future work. She also recommended a better shampoo and conditioner for my hair type. One more thing - this was way less expensive than I thought it would be. My price was $125 for color correction. I walked out with not quite my natural color, but a much better color, and a plan to get my natural color back. I will be visiting Dvir Salon again. read more

What a great experience. My hair was in pretty sad shape from about a year of cutting it myself or letting friends cut it. Dvir fixed it wonderfully, and was lots of fun. I like my hair again! I also got an awesome scalp massage. The wash, cut, and blow dry was $60. Only thing I'd mention is that there's not a ton of waiting room, so if you don't feel like getting cozy with the stylists and whoever else is in there, don't arrive early. A cute, very hipster Brooklyn salon filled with people seeking fashionable bobs and all that jazz. A good haircut is definitely pricey these days (I'm terrified about trying to go to Supercuts) but $60 bucks for a haircut is certainly decent since I had long hair when I went in and left with short hair & bangs. The people are all really nice and friendly in the trendy-but-not-OVERLY-trendy atmosphere and they serve you really good coffee while you wait. Though I'm usually pretty lax about whatever kind of cut I get (I'm not uptight about lengths or anything), the hairstylist Naho was attentive to what I wanted and trying to be clear to serve a happy medium plus the hair washing was good and thorough without getting water in my eyes or hurting my scalp. It's a very likable salon that has fair prices and balances between being comfortable like you would a place around the corner, but fashionable as well. read more

This is place is great. Jill has never given me a bad haircut, and frequently I leave with great hair. This is by no means a small feat - my head is oddly shaped (a huuuge ridge running down the middle), my hair is unruly and dense, and I'm not a particularly fashionable guy. Even dealing with all of that Jill still makes it work. Plus she's fun to talk to - an important detail when you're in close proximity to someone for 45 min or so. Likewise, the rest of the staff is phenomenal. The head massage while shampooing/rinsing is worth the price alone. The front desk staff always offer a cup of pretty tasty green tea and sometimes cookies! And in the odd chance that I can book Jill, another very talented stylist still manages to corral my hair into something not terrible. Why go anywhere else? read more

Laura cut my hair tonight, and it looks really great. This is the first time I've ever splurged and got a cut somewhere besides Supercuts, except for the few times I've ventured out to the Puerto Rican salons near my apartment. I realized quickly that a language barrier is not necessarily a good idea when getting a new do. :/ Anyway, the place was really cute with an adorable lil pooch that greets you as you walk in. Everyone is super friendly, and every single person that works there offered me something to drink (I just downed an entire bottle of water so I didn't need anything). Jill washed my hair, but she didn't scrape off my scalp like a lot of people try to do, but instead gave me a nice head massage. On to the cut... Laura was great and listened to what I wanted, which granted, wasn't really a lot. I didn't want much more than bangs and a trim. She was really honest about what she thought my hair needed which I appreciate after seeing so many hairdressers who will do whatever you ask even if it's a totally bad idea. I'm only giving four stars for now because I didn't get anything too extreme, and I had a pretty long wait time (my appointment was at 7:15, and she got started cutting around 7:40). Where do I begin? I moved to NY over 8 years ago, and for nearly all of those 8 years, I traveled back home to CT, because I was so attached to my longtime stylist. Over Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, out of utter desperation for a cut, I yelp'd to see what was in Brooklyn, close to my new apartment. I saw some rave reviews, sucked it up, and made an appointment with a then new to Dvir stylist, Leslie. Leslie is amazing, and let me say, she is stuck with me forever! I have a horrible time with getting my hair cut. Basically, I'm happiest when I've let it grow out for a couple of months so that the curls start taking over and I'm a big, shaggy mop of curl. Of course, there's a fine line between cute curly mop and unruly when-are-you-going-to-get-your-hair-cut shag. My problem is that I don't so much want a hair cut as a *time machine* to run my hair backward about a month so it's not quite so long. Where are the time machines? It's 2010 for god's sake! Anyway, until we figure out the damn time machine thing, I need to find a hair place that can handle my hair. Enter Dvir Hair Salon -- I called them up on a whim because they're around the corner from my place and my fellow Yelpers had given it a pretty good rap. In short, it was a pretty great experience. The person that took my appointment request on the telephone was clear and efficient, when I showed up they offered me a drink, and the place itself is easy on the eyes and nice to hang out in. My hair stylist, Deena, was super-understanding about my stupid hair and understood pretty immediately what I needed. Then I got a beautiful shampooing and scalp massage (drool) by another woman (sorry, didn't get your name) before Deena attacked the mane with clarity and precision. We ended up talking about all our favorite things in Brooklyn until, lo and behold, I was done and my hair was short and stylish again. Yay! The day later, things are shaping up very well on top of my head, and I think I can safely say that this is my best hair cut to date. Jill at Dvir is in charge of my hair from now on! I never know what I want when I go to the salon, so I told her that I wanted something between professional and cool that wouldn't take forever to style in the morning. she gave me a super cute modern bob. My layers curl instead of getting frizzy like they used to and I can just throw some product in and head out the door.
