Never been there so this is just about my experience on the phone trying to make an appointment. The person who answered was nice enough, which is the reason for the 2 stars, but they wanted my credit card information over the phone to secure my reservation....what?! I honestly don't know if this is the way salons operate in NYC as I've never experienced this before anywhere when I've gotten a haircut and I've been to salons in Manhattan. I understand their point but the practice is poor customer service; if a potential client cancels, then you just make an internal note to not schedule the person anymore. This practice is poor customer service in an industry that is dying and should be trying to gain customers' loyalty. I didn't give my info, told the person to cancel my appointment, made one elsewhere where they DID NOT ask for my credit card info, and got a fabulous cut and some great customer service. read more

So since my very favorable review I have had several more appointments at Dvir with worse and worse results and have decided to move on. The salon CONSTANTLY schedules clients on top of clients for their stylists which means that at each point of my visit (generally for a cut and half head highlight with a glaze) I am stuck waiting with a wet head in one of their chairs for up to half an hour. The last time I went I was there for no joke 4 HOURS and at the end my stylist "didn't have time" for my cut. I felt like I was being shuffled around like cattle. Never again. read more

Disclaimer: I have not had my hair cut at Dvir (though not for lack of trying)-- this review is based on their customer service. After reading good reviews about this place, I was looking forward to having my hair cut here. I had previously trekked to Manhattan for haircuts and was looking for something a little closer to home. This seemed to fit the bill, and I called and scheduled a Saturday appt at 1pm. The day of the appt, I get a call at 1:05 asking me if I was going to keep my 12:45 appt. I explained to Sabrina (or Sylvia, the receptionist) that I had scheduled my appt for 1, and was already walking the last 2 blocks to the salon. Her response was to suggest rescheduling me for 4 hours later, or the next day. Frankly, I was surprised by this-- no apology, nor at least an attempt to squeeze me in near my 1pm scheduled time. I know I did not ask for a 12:45 time since I had a prior commitment in the morning-- the receptionist's response made me wonder if they had double-booked and were now trying to clear their schedules. For those thinking of trying Dvir, I'd suggest perhaps calling in advance to check that they've got your appt time down correctly-- it might end up saving you time and subway fare. Why this would be necessary in the first place, though, is a bit beyond me. read more

It's always hit or miss, which is not acceptable. I had a good experience with Agatha (who is at s different location now?), a decent one with Naho, but the rest have been really bad. I just got my bangs trimmed and they are horrible - the guy didn't listen to me and chopped them super short and blunt. I look like a 6 year old. I'm done giving this place another try or any more of my money. read more

Coming here was a big mistake. I was trying to save money, so I decided to try Dvir Hair Salon instead of my regular Manhattan place. I asked the woman to give me "just a small trim." Instead, she decided to give me bangs. She made her first cut before I could stop her. My hair looks awful!! The colorist was no better. She did not get anywhere near my roots and I had to come back the next day so Dvir himself could fix it. It was definitely not worth the $40 that I saved by not going to my regular place. The receptionist/bearer of the price list decided to treat me terribly for no reason. She acted as if I was incredibly dumb and not understanding what she was saying. Came here after two other salons cancelled on me at the last minute before a wedding. They got me in and did an amazing job!

If you're an African-American female please I repeat please do not go to this salon. They do not have good skills when it comes to doing our natural hair. I made my reservations the day I decided to get my hair done here because of last minute complications. When I made my reservations I did not specify I wanted a trim because this was the first time I straightened my hair since I've been natural. However when I did notice my hair needed to be trimmed I told the hairstylist and the receptionist to her she can not do, because I did not tell her that when I call! Literally I wanted to snap and walk out! I have the money to money to pay. When it was time to flat iron my hair there were 2 people doing! If you know there wouldn't be time to fix me so I can do everything I wanted to get done with just one person its the best idea to let me up front. Also if you pay by card they charge you extra! The girl wasn't even going to tell me I had to ask. I have so much more to say but I will stop here. Certainly will not be back here. The other location is better. read more

I don't know how salons in this price range normally are (my cuts tend to be in the $14 range), but this place is great. Very chill, very friendly, and you get great treatment. I half expected to feel short changed, given that 40 bucks is way more than I normally pay, but I don't at all - Chelsea shampooed my hair twice, once before and once after cutting,, used only scissors, and basically treated my head like a sculptor working in marble. I feel like I just got the bmw of mens haircuts. read more

One word - NAHO - the best! She's an outstanding hairdresser, whatever your needs. Maintaining a hairstyle, cutting from long to short, best pixie cut, coloring. Highly recommend. The $40 for a men's haircut was out of my price range, but not any more - it was well worth it. Naho fixed the damage from my previous miserable haircut and then some. I waited until I had gone twice before posting. I walked in here 6 weeks ago after a bad cut from another local salon. Also, I had been doing my own color and it was flat. My appointment was with Agatha and I was nervous since I hadn't seen Yelp reviews of her. It turned out that I had absolutely no reason to be nervous - she was fabulous. We talked, she looked at my hair (straight, fine and thinning...), discussed what she thought were options and went to work. I was absolutely thrilled with the outcome - color and corrective cut! So... back yesterday for roots and trim - again, she was great. Didn't rush, focused on what she was doing and I walked out a very happy lady. I would STRONGLY recommend Agatha at Dvir!!! read more

I'm starting to learn that scheduling services after work on weekdays is not a good idea. I scheduled an appointment for a haircut for 7pm on a Wednesday and I could tell that the stylist was ready to get out of there. This was my first time going to Dvir but my husband gets his hair cut there and I like how it looks every time he goes. I went there with the idea of coming out with a new look. I had long hair and made the decision to go with a medium haircut. While the haircut was good, the styling was so old-fashioned that all I wanted to do was go home and fix it myself...which is exactly what I did. The stylist kept telling me that I have to adjust my expectations now that I have shorter hair. Not quite the feeling that one seeks from a hair cut! I wanted to come out of the salon feeling amazing, but instead I came out kind of regretting my decision to cut my hair. Not sure if I will be back. read more

A waste of money. After bringing in a picture, discussing length in detail, I walked out with almost a non cut. None of the layers I wanted and nothing like the picture. I have been popping around to some high rated yelp salons bc I'm new to the area. When I called for the appointment, I asked for their top colorist - they appointed me with a girl there - I stopped in here to go blonder - ugh - turned brassy copper red/orange - no highlights came through. Put on toner, but it was still orange...added more highlights, put another round of toner, still orange.... paid way more money then the previous 3 salons I had gone to... and on top of my color not looking good, now my hair feels like straw - it's dry n' frizzy. I will be steering clear of this place in the future. Unhappy and broke. read more

naho is the best i moved from san francisco to new york five years ago and had been trying to find a hair stylist who knew what to do with my incredibly difficult asian man hair and after two and a half years, many a hair salon, and several flings with stylists, i finally came across dvir when i moved to boerum hill. naho gave me the best haircuts of my life. then i moved to harlem and prioritized trekking to brooklyn for haircuts over trekking to hang out with friends. the shampoos with head massage and hair rinses and nice ambience and cute dog in the shop and good music and conversation make getting haircuts one of my favorite things to do. read more

I've been here twice, the last time was about 6 months ago. I've been thinking about where to get my next hair cut, which reminded me it will not be Dvir. The first time I went to Dvir, the cut was sort of blah. I didn't have much in mind, I just wanted more shape and style to my existing look. I got...fewer split ends? It was fine, just uninspiring. The next time I went, I had a look/cut in mind. My hair was to my mid-back or so and I wanted to go shoulder-length, no bangs, sleek. I had a photo. It was fabulous. Point of clarification: I've gone long-to-short about a thousand times, so my experience was not tied to shock at a new length. So, I chatted with the hairstylist about what I wanted, showed her a photo, and let her work her magic. Next thing I knew, I had bangs. She was going for "shorter pieces in the front to give it more texture," which I was OK with (although it wasn't in the photo), but then seemed to realize I have a cowlick in my hairline and her short pieces weren't laying properly. It's true, I have a cowlick. It's not a deformity, it's a cowlick. Most hairstylists ignore it or work around it, or apologize for the fact that I will never have Jennifer Aniston's hairline. This hairstylist decided to wage a war against the cowlick by to give me insanely short bangs - literally the shortest I've ever had, which is saying something because I went through a phase where I cut my own bangs. The problem is, I was pretty clear at the beginning of the appointment: I did not want bangs. And these tiny little banglets made me feel self-conscious and necessitated and immediate trip to Duane Reade to find as many different kinds of clips, hairspray, pins, etc as I could carry to try to deal with the bangs I did not want. That's a long-winded way of saying, maybe I've seen the wrong stylists both times I've been there (they were two different girls), but they both seemed inexperienced and lacking creativity or vision. The prices are good, the vibe is cool, and I've always been able to get an appointment quickly, but I wont be going back. read more

Almost three years later and I still love this place. Carrie gives a great men's cut and pays attention to my ideas. She's also a blast to chat with and always remembers little personal things about me. I always leave this place happy with my hair and the price of their services. Highlights are certainly not the cheapest hairstyle to keep up, but Agatha makes them worth it. I came in for my initial appointment really fed up with how my previous two stylists had left the color, and Agatha took the time to listen to what I didn't want (which is not the easiest quality to find in a stylist) and I left really thrilled. She even suggested a different timeline for my color frequency, which saved me a bunch of money. read more

Because of my schedule, i had to try a new stylist for color. I got Laura, who also did a great job. She listened to what I wanted, which was the tricky task of going from a very dark brown to a warm coppery red, while also covering gray roots. I said that I wanted to do it without extreme damage, so she suggested breaking it down into steps, and so today I had a baillage which gave nice red highlights. She also mixed a special formulation just for my roots so I don't have day-glo pink or orange there (been there, done that). I appreciate that she took the time to tell me that it couldn't be done in one visit with predictable results and an even color, and that it would be damaging to try. So even though I am not 100% to my goal color, I am definitely on the way, and in the meantime my hair stlll feels healthy and is a good color with my complexion. I would definitely recommend working with Laura if you want to talk about making a drastic change with someone who knows what she is doing. She also had a really pleasant, fun demeanor. read more

I have really kinky curly hair and I generally have my hair first flat ironed and then cut dry. First off, the shampoo was wonderful because they massage your scalp, secondly, I had Moohja and she straightened my hair so well that you couldn't see any dryness or split ends. She immediately noticed the terrible job that the previous person did to my hair and fixed it. Finally, The environment is very nice and relaxing and there is a cute dog that walks around with dyed hair. read more

Ozzie is a super nice, competent, consistent, and down to earth stylist who listens to what people want. I initially found him through yelp after i desperately needed someone to "fix" my bad do, which was the result of going elsewhere to cut off all of my long hair--over 15 inches. And now have an easy, hip, low maintenance, and age-appropriate short hair cut that I really like. I regularly have been going to him for cuts ever since--almost 2 years ago and continue to get fantastic cuts and all around great service at the salon. read more

I wrote a review last week about my experience at Dvir Salon. Their manager called me this week and asked me to come in and get a whole new set of highlights complimentary, along with a deep conditioner. First off: I was pleased about this gesture. I asked to see Carrie, who had done my hair last week. I'm so happy to report that she did a terrific job! Carrie spent a couple of hours on me and was very thorough, but also very pleasant. She took time off her schedule ( since we stayed after hours! ) to make sure I came out as a happy customer. And happy I am! My color looks terrific, and now I can appreciate the cut from last week even more. I'll be back at Dvir salon for sure. read more

I chose Dvir Salon for my bridal hair and make-up, originally because of it's convenient proximity to our wedding venue and positive reviews online. I ended up only using Dvir for hair. Initially I set up a trial with my stylist Ozzy during which he was nice enough to try three different hairstyles for me. Due to my indecisiveness alone, I decided to do a second trial for a whole new look and loved it! Ozzy excellently executed the look I was going for based on a couple of pictures alone, and was able to recreate that exact same style on the big day. I also made appointments for 6 women in my bridal party for the day of the wedding. I can honestly say every single girl was thrilled with her stylist and 'do. The whole Dvir team is friendly, talented and fast! We were able to get all 7 of us done within 2 hours. I would highly recommend Dvir to a friend whether it's for an important event or a routine appointment. read more

As someone who's never had a hair cut in New York, I was nervous about finding the right place and right person to cut my curly/wavy hair. After looking on yelp, I settled on Dvir Salon, made an appointment a week in advance for Friday afternoon, and arrived on time to a clean, bright, and friendly salon. After having my rain coat hung up for me and being offered some refreshments, I sat down with Jamie to discuss what I wanted done. I hadn't cut my hair much in the last year, so my layers had grown out and my hair was looking worse for the wear. I showed Jamie a short curly hair cut photo I'd found online, and after studying it for a bit he told me exactly how he would cut my hair to match it. I was impressed with his ability to dissect the image and match it to what he saw in my own hair. After a nice shampoo and conditioning, he swiveled me to the mirror and started chopping away. I'm a fairly quiet person, and usually I'm reluctant to go to hair styling places because I find it tiring to carry on an hour-long conversation with the stranger who's cutting my hair. But to my surprise, I found the conversation with Jamie flowed pretty naturally. There were some comfortable silences where I enjoyed watching him style and cut my hair, and then stretches of engaging chatter ranging from living in the Midwest vs. Brooklyn to family expectations to Indian weddings. The hour flew by. And when he finished styling my hair and I got a good look at it, I was ecstatic. It felt amazing - my curls were light and bouncy, and framed my face and head beautifully. The other stylists had been passing by during the cut and giving approving looks, and at the end one of them congratulated him on what a great cut it was. It was a pretty drastic change for me, but there were no misgivings once I saw the end product. I always wait for the next day after a hair cut to really assess it, and when I woke up the next day I was even more pleased with how it looked. He matched the photo I had shown him perfectly, and it was exactly the look I wanted. Seriously, I forgot how much confidence a new hair cut can give you, and I felt like a brand new person after this cut. Dvir Salon is the place to go! QUICK NOTE: I paid the standard $60 for a women's cut, with my credit card, but when I tried adding tip they told me they only took cash tips. I had to run out to an ATM around the corner to get some cash. read more

Went here after trying several salons in Brooklyn and Manhattan trying to find my new place...loved this place!! Cassandra did my highlights and I love them-she did exactly what I wanted and even tweaked things halfway through to more closely match my requests. My first decent cut since moving to NYC two years ago. As a first time client, the receptionist set me up with Carina. I was a little worried based on the cuts I'd gotten in the area that left much to be desired, but I was also excited to possibly find a salon that I could trust. Carina listened to what type of style I wanted and tried to decipher what I meant even though I really had no idea of the terminology required to explain what my hair dresser in LA used to do. Basically I wanted to keep my hair long and wanted it to have all of the style right in the cut because I'm a "wash and go" type of girl and I don't have time (or the skill) to style it on my own. I also wanted to make sure that the front layers still reached my pony tail for when I worked out. She gave me a great cut and I got a bunch of complements when I went out afterwards. Only problem was that when I woke up the next morning the dead ends in the back were still there and totally frizzed out. Apparently I needed to take some more off the length to make my locks healthy again, after all it had been 4 months since I had it cut on a visit back to LA. I called the salon and they were super accommodating and fit me in right away. Carina did a great job with keeping the length on the first cut and making sure the front layers still fit a pony tail. She was conservative and I'm so glad that she didn't go overboard on the trim initially. I'd rather have to go back and have a bit more taken off. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to work with a new client to figure out just what they want. While my hair is a little shorter than I would have liked, it had to be done to clean it up and in a month or so it will grow to the length I wanted.
