I went to the Dutton Hardware store on Sept 24; 2019 to find a light fixture for over the bathroom sink. The owner thought and said go to the back of the store and look up to see the light fixture. I couldn't find it and after asking three times if he could show me he reluctantly walked back. The fixture was high up next to the ceiling and was too big. He sarcastically said "that's what I told you." I asked why he was nasty? He denied nasty and I left. His mother, Susan, was never nasty. I left after telling him that he didn't like his job and took it out on his customers. Been going there for years but won't return. read more

There's pros and cons, here. Yes, they have quite a variety of stuff. But, their return policy is kind of terrible: store credit only, within two weeks, and not on tools. So, forget about buying extra of anything "just in case you need it" -- it's not a place for projects, it's just one for small repairs. read more

I purchased a product last week and I should have known better due to the fact the box had been open. When I finally got around to installing the item one of the parts was missing. I decided to return it today the owner refused to give me a refund. He offered a store credit. I did not want to purchase anything else from him because he was extremely rude. The no refund sign was located extremely low,way below my waist line. This item cost me 160.00. and he offered me a store credit. Stay away. I've been living in San Leandro for a few years now and really wanted to like and enjoy having a neighborhood hardware store that I could walk to and support. But more often than not, I have been disappointed. The service is below par (often rude), the return policy allows for credit only, and the prices are considerably higher than other hardware stores. This ACE Hardware looks deceptively small from the outside, but once inside, you'll see just how much stuff they have! The store goes all the way back, and the shelves are stacked pretty high, so they've managed to stock this store with lots and lots of stuff! They carry cleaning supplies, tools, nails, painting supplies, and other household items. They even carry seasonal items like Christmas lights. I often come here to get cleaning supplies and mason jars for my canning needs. It's always good to ask the owners for the items you're looking for since they have so much stuff. Wow, what a gem of a store! I stumbled into this old-fashioned, stuffed to the brim, hardware store while visiting my accountant the other day. I was looking for replacement faucet handles - the ones that the jagoff contractor installed in my new store five months ago had failed and we were reduced to washing our hands using a pair of vise-grips to turn the water on and off. The owner is an extremely affable man, who led me back into the far reaching warrens of his (from the outside anyways) teeny shop to a huge display of faucet replacement parts - as large as I've seen in a Home Depot or Orchard to be sure. The price seemed right, just about what I would have paid at a big box store, but the difference here was that I was supporting a small, family owned, independent business, was being served by the owner of said business, and all seemed right with the world. When the owner found out that I owned Farmstead Cheeses and Wines, a gleam of recognition passed over his face. "I live in Montclair," he told me. And there it was, Yelpers - owner to owner of two tiny businesses transacting commerce the way it's been done in this country for hundreds and hundreds of years. Although, wait a minute. Tiny shops are disappearing every day, especially in this economy. Please avoid shopping at chains . Spend your hard earned $$ at your local indy outlets - even if you might be paying a dollar or two more. Every $ you spend at Walmart, Whole Foods, Amazon, or the Apple Store (instead of the local hardware, indie grocery, book shop or record store) is a $ that leaves YOUR community and goes into the coffers of some nameless corporation. Pretty full of character for a hardware store-- this is actually I believe a privately-held Ace Hardware, and it's pretty funny. It's very close to "my" donut shop, Lucky Donut (I also wrote a review for that place), and it's on the way to a couple places I go from the 580. The place is really cramped and all the "stuff" towers over your head. But don't bother looking for what you need in this mess! The wacky East Asian (Chinese-American? Japanese-American?) proprietress is always hovering about and is very eager to help; just flag her down and ask for what you want. It doesn't look promising. It's darkish, crowded, stuffed to the gills. Very old fashioned looking. And yet... Go in there, or call, when you are looking for something specific. Don't try to find it yourself, just tell the person in front (it's family run) what you want. Likely they've got it. If they don't have it, they'll get it, and they'll maybe get it for you in a few HOURS. I called there the day before Burning Man started, looking for water containers for a friend who was more focussed on his artwork than on practicalities. "Give me an hour?" the young man on the other end of the line said, "I am pretty sure I can get what you need." And sure enough, an hour later, he had three five-gallon canisters waiting for me, even though everywhere else in town was sold out. Do I know where he got them? I didn't ask. Just call. Every time I go in I get what I needed. Batteries, light bulbs, keys, tools. Great color selection of spray paints, and I love the vibe (densely packed with goods, no inch wasted, but familiar & welcoming). If you need to find something they know where it is, just ask. Really nice place to get new key copies! When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by an older gentleman. Getting key copies was very quick but he made me go next door to pick up the keys. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I would like to receive the keys in the same location I purchased them. For that reason, I dock off a star. read more

What a joy to come here. Easy, close, fast, friendly, with old-fashion hardware store charm. I come here all the time, calling first if I'm not sure if they will have it -- just did that, and they will transfer from their Piedmont store. This past summer a friend and I completed a large mural near Dutton. Dutton Hardware was the most helpful place and we got everything we needed from there. The owner was very efficient and kind, and helped us find everything we needed very quickly. I will always give Dutton Hardware my business because everyone working there was awesome and helped me and my friend get what we needed. They have also been very safe during Covid by wearing masks gloves, and having hand sanitizer available. read more

I had the worst customer service here! I went in to find a certain hook. There was a young man at the register with no customers. He just directed the unit customer that was there to get his part to the back of the store. He directs me to the left back to the store . I am looking for a while and go back and say that I can't find it. In a rude voice he said it's back there on the left . I ask if he can help me and he got upset and says I don't have time to come and help you I am at the register . I said it's your job to help me..., you don't even have any customers ! The other one customer was in the back still. As I am walking back to go to the left he walked past me all aggregated and goes to the right and gives me the hook. I figured going to this place would be ok since I only needed two identical keys made and they have done it successfully for me in the past and I wouldn't have to walk down the unsafe, cluttered aisles and risk falling. When I got home neither new key worked in the lock! I went back to dutton hardware where the owner said he "fixed" them. When I got home again the keys still didn't work!! So I returned to dutton hardware yet again with my receipt and told the owner "strike three your out I want a refund!! He said no refunds and disappeared with the keys yet again. He returned and gave me two additional new keys. When I got home again none of the new keys worked whatsoever yet my original key still worked fine. I then took it to Pete's Ace Hardware in Castro Valley and got two new keys that work like butter. Needless to say I don't recommend dutton hardware, an embarrassment to the "Ace" name. read more

We've been here a few times and are always surprised at how many items they have in what seems to be a tiny space! The whole family is extremely knowledgeable-- it's quite impressive. Worst experience ever. Would give them zero stars if I knew how. I don't consider myself hard to please but the customer service and quality of service I purchased here was sorely lacking. I came in to get a copy of a key (a pretty straightforward request) and the guy working the register gave me the incorrect change. He took my money and didn't even count it and just gave me a random amount of change back. I had to tell him how much I gave him in order for him to fix his error and give me the right amount back. He admitted he didn't count it when I questioned him about it. Then I get home and the key doesn't even work and won't open my front door. At this point I don't even feel that it's worth it to go back and try to return the key since they never gave me a receipt. I don't feel like getting into an argument over $2.18; not worth my time. But they are unprofessional and I will definitely not come here ever again. read more

I had one of the worst shopping experiences in this hardware store. After numerous tries at Home Depot looking for a very specific washing machine valve (all failures), I ended up at Dutton hoping they they would have exactly what I needed. I walked into the store and an elderly woman employee asked if I needed help. After I gave her the specifics, she took me to the plumbing area and, after shuffling through a few parts, we found a possible replacement. Being the DIYer that I am (I repair pipes, build shelves, do electrical, etc.) and always double-checking for multiple options, I looked through the different bins and 2 other similar items. This is when things got "interesting". When she saw me looking around, she said "I don't know what you're looking for, I already gave you the part you need." I showed her the ones I found and replied "I'm just making sure that there are no other options that I may have missed". She follows up with "Don't you people watch Sesame Street? It's just matching one part with another. I gave you one and they are all the same." Then I showed her the other two valves I found and she said "well they all do the same thing so you can buy any of them". When I mentioned my experience at Home Depot, she proceeds to say "Well, that's your fault. You're supposed to know exactly what you're looking for. Home Depot will just sell you anything." I was shocked with her attitude but proceeded to look around some more. After she walked away to tend to another customer (which she spoke to in a very similar fashion), I chose the one I wanted, said to her "Thank you for your help", went to the cashier and paid. You're probably wondered why I still bought the part from the store. Trust me, I would not have made the purchase if I wasn't crunched for time (working from home, phone call in 35-40 minutes, needing to install the part beforehand, etc.). Potential extreme fire hazard & "Death Trap" impression from recent trip there. Narrow aisleways stacked w/merchandise all the way to back of the store. (Seems like the store offerings in items Doubled-Up as when rear storage area was opened up to customer entryways) Clutter galore. Not organized & lacks basic organization. Items not in bins & NOT PROPERLY placed on shelves. Inadequate displayed merchandise, some cases are racks, items loosely tossed on floors. Owner not able to find his tools to cut length of material customer ordered. Placed cutter he just used on top of large empty box (water heater sized), which could easily drop on customers' feet, arms, hands or body. Other hazards... e.g. - 1/2 dozen Garden Hoes stacked vertically, in middle VERY narrow corridor/aisle W/blades face-up. Potential injury hazard. Was struck by loose rack on floor area in aisle way as it was accidentally kicked. Overhanging ext cords (small bulb lighting) in close proximity to customers/staff off & below LOW ceilings are a danger. I got briefly entangled (caught) in one wire as I was just walking by. It is not too permanent of a setup as a plug loosely disengaged, taking out a once lit bulb connection & could not be reconnected. So this resulted in a no light/low light safety hazard (no avail. windows/naturals light). Contacted city code enforcement, no callbacks, & FD... they don't have jurisdiction & nor chartered to inspect/investigate/cite. read more

I frequent Dutton Hardware when I need quick service. Oftentimes, since my home is older, they'll have the part and service is immediate. Yes their prices are a little higher, as any mom and pop. They're not a big box, like Home Depot or Walmart, and there's usually no line and I'm in and out in no time. The elder lady knows her stuff, can be snippy, but most of us older ladies in this kind of environment would probably get testy.
