It's been a while since I came here. Since I needed some items, we were greeted upon entry by 2 friendly lads having a conversation. One of them pause the chat and asked if I needed help. I told him what I needed and I followed him to where the items were. Marcos who was the young lad who took and showed me the items I needed was super helpful. One hell of a hardware store, let me tell you! Speaking as a New Yorker living in Florida, I have never seen something like this outside of Brooklyn until now. So, selection wise, you aren't gonna be disappointed! Don't let the fact that this is a hole-in-the-wall joint fool you; there is halls upon halls of goods that you definitely find what you seek if you look hard enough. The older Asian male who has rung up my purchase at the registers ()1/28/26) is one unhappy soul. He is never friendly, social or polite. I have shopped at this store three times and he has helped at the register each time. The constant scowl on his face, is not customer friendly. I just needed one wall plug and I did not want to drive all the way to Home Depot. I 100% will drive to Home Depot in the future. I have never ever felt welcomed in this store and I will not be returning. Plus ,YOU BETTER READ THEIR RETURN POLICY BEFORE YOU PURCHASE ANY ITEM. They will only give you a store credit. I was sold a defective product and he would not refund me. I was willing to exchange for another product but there was a significant difference in price and he would only give me store credit. While I like to support local small businesses, I will never shop at Dutton Hardware ever again. I bought two furnace filters of the same size. I admit I was not paying attention to the charge to my credit card at the time of sale, but later realized that I had been charged 18.99 for one filter and 28.99 for the second. When I returned to complain that I had been overcharged the owner pointed out that the two filters were different types of the same size. I agree that he was right but could not understand why he would sell me two filters of the same size without pointing out they they were different prices. I understand that one filter was better than the other, but I was not advised that I had the choice of two inexpensive filters or two superior filters. I felt ripped off. I know I could have returned one of them but decided the poor service demanded that I suck it up and vote with my feet by never shopping there again. read more

I can't remember ever wanting to get out of a business faster than I wanted to leave this ACE. It is very messy, I could hardly walk through the aisles, and discarded products were haphazardly left on the floors. It is an accident waiting to happen, with numerous tripping hazards in very tight spaces. They do not seem to have a system for getting rid of old inventory or even tidying up new messes as they arise. Overall it gives the appearance of a business that has stopped caring about the quality of the experience or product they offer. I would recommend ACE in Castro Valley or OSH in San Leandro, it would be worth the extra drive. read more

DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you want some paint products that have been on the shelves for YEARS. I didn't say all, I said some. I went to buy some water based, satin, polyurethane. Derrick, the owner, took me to the polyurethane products he had. All of the cans looked old and the lids were sucked in. For a person with a degree in thermodynamics, this only means one thing. The product has been exposed to extreme temperatures and THAT is why the lids are sucked inward. He told me it was humidity but the only way humidity could be introduced is if outside air was introduced to the inside of the can. Meaning the lid was off or it had been opened already. Wanting to buy local and against my better judgement, I bought the can. When I opened it I realized that he had sold me OIL based polyurethane. I went back to the store for a refund. He gave me a can in worse condition then the first AND the old price sticker had been removed and replace with a freshly written price that matched the original can. They said it had been shaken and mixed but there was a half inch layer of thick material on the bottom of the can that simply could not be mixed. I went back for a second time to get a refund. Derrick told me he could give me a store credit but by this time I had already decided to NEVER EVER shop at this store again. I did not want a store credit, I wanted a credit back on my credit card. Mumbling and grumbling, he gave me the credit. He told me to remember that "next time", I don't issue return credit, only store credit. I ensured him that I was never ever coming back. I also told him that it had become clear after the many years of doing business with this guy that he simply doesn't care about you. I think he only cares about moving his old inventory to anyone. I am surprised that ACE would even let this store continue to do business. Most franchises have minimum standards and there is NO WAY this store would come close. There is another ACE hardware store worth every minute of the time it takes to get there from here. They're cleaner, bigger, and they have a friendly staff of people eager to help you find exactly what you're looking for without the B.S. I hereby give myself permission to forget about this store for the rest of my life. I now thank myself. I'm all about community and supporting all of our local businesses. But not this one. He cost me time, money, and a TON of frustration. read more

I should have gone here first! I needed a space heater in a hurry. I went to the Home Depot website and it listed 40 units of the model I wanted in stock at my local store. When I got there, they did not have any space heaters at all, and they had been out for weeks. Then I did what I should have done first. I called Dutton Hardware. They immediately answered the phone (which would never happen at Home Depot) and let me know what they had on the shelf. When I went to pick it up, the price was a bit higher than Home Depot, but the convenience and service were more than worth it. I parked right outside the store and was immediately helped by a friendly, knowledgeable person who I suspect was a member of the family that owns the business. Don't give your money to a corporate giant with poor customer service. Shop local at places like Dutton hardware and enjoy better service while supporting your community. read more

As like one of the other reviewers mentioned, you're in and out. I think this place should get more recognition in my opinion. I think if it were laid out a little better they would get more business and maybe take a lesson from Cole Hardware to make it more of a browsing store. I try to shop at local businesses as much as possible, but I won't be returning to this one. The owner is flat out rude. If customers irritate him so much, perhaps he should stay behind the scenes and let his nice, helpful kids run the store instead. I had several sets of keys made there and after three tries, the keys to my mail box still did not work. The owner got extremely surly with me, like I was being unreasonable for insisting that he redo keys until they worked. Each time I brought the keys back, he was abrupt and unpleasant. We reached an impasse the third time I was in the store. I insisted that the keys did not work. He insisted that they should. He said there was something wrong with the mail box cylinder and I should bring it to him. That was ridiculous so I said never mind, I would just eat the cost of the keys. He offered a store credit and I declined because there's no way I'll ever go back to that store again. I brought the keys to 89th Ave Locks Keys Glass Etc (see their excellent Yelp reviews) where the owner looked at the keys carefully and could see why they didn't work. He cut and shaped them and sent me on my way. They worked perfectly. All three fit into the lock and turn easily. I'm not sure why the owner of Dutton Hardware had such a problem, but the owner of 89th Avenue Locks Keys Glass Etc fixed the keys in minutes and was extremely pleasant and professional while he did it. We are moving to San Leandro in two weeks, and thusly, have lots of tasks that involve. hardware with our new home. Ines Eiras, our realtor, told us about Dutton Hardware, and since then have patronized the small, well run store several times. Sharon and Derek, the owners, welcomed us to our new neighborhood and have helped and advised us, giving personal attention and being totally professional, wearing faces masks properly and keeping a social distance. I can see this little neighborhood establishment being our new "go to" when we have home related tasks. read more

I went in to buy one thing and couldn't get out fast enough. The person who asked to help me did but then proceeded to follow me to the register and start to tell him his political views. I don't say this lightly but it was very sexist and racist remarks about our current VP. I tried to get out of that conversation by letting him I didn't share his views but that just seemed to feed his fire - he continued his rant - mask down (even when I asked him to put it up around my kid who can't get vaccinated.) Ordered two relatively large custom made window screens, and was a little nervous when placing them into the window frame, but both fit perfectly, and they looked good too. It was simple, I brought in the old damaged screen and they took it from there. Think it was a two or three day turnaround. Called first asking if they had Valspar paint. Whomever I spoke to was very polite and said of course. Once I arrived I was directed to a bookcase assortment of spray paints with no prices posted and clearly no Valspar brand. He explained the paint ranged from $3-13 (with no clear indication of prices). My mom then told the worker again that we needed and wanted Valspar spray paint and he said it didn't exist and he would know he's a rep. However they had the canned paint... Well I'm a big D.I.Y.er and I watched several YouTube videos, read several blog posts and had clearly seen photos and videos of people using the Valspar spray paint. Not sure if he was being dishonest or simply misinformed but either way I won't be back. Headed to Lowes to get what I actually want and need for my project. Two stars for politeness on the phone. I came in on a Friday. It was one of the only WFH days I've had because of the poor air quality caused by the Butte County fires. I called 3 different hardware stores looking for an N95 mask, all 3 said they were sold out. I attempted once more when I felt that it was hopeless, and Dutton Hardware store said they still have plenty. I came in, there was a line of customers who were all trying to get multiple sets of N95 mask. It was mayhem, but two young folks (one male, one female) were handling the situation professionally. Kudos to both of them. One thing to note is that, this hardware store went ahead and order a ton of N95 mask for the neighborhood and even said they are constantly placing orders each day. This is a small mom's and pop's store, while the large commercialize stores are failing to supply us with these mask, this little small shop on Dutton is finding ways to supply our needs. Also, they were selling the N95 mask for $2! Other stores are selling it for $7. This place is truly a god-send, I wish this family and the store the best and I hope good karma repays them well read more

The owner is rude and always seems annoyed. He gives curt answers to questions and the store is dusty and disorganized. A few months ago he sold me some putty for plastic. First of all, the stuff didn't work and it was expired by almost a year. Today, I went there looking for a halogen appliance bulb. I told him I was looking for a bulb that's 20 watts and 120 volts. Leaning on the shelf with his hands on his hip, annoyingly he says, "All bulbs are 120 volts" as though I said something stupid. Sorry bud, I'm not an electrician. Just telling you what the specs said. I've been there several times for this and that over the years as I live about a mile away, but no more. Each time the owner seems either irritated or disinterested or just in a bad mood. Well, I'll go to Home Depot despite the long lines due to COVID-19. Cheaper prices and less attitude. P.S. Needed a landscaping plumbing part. Teenage male walked me to rear of store and left. Alone, I found a smaller version of what I needed. A male in his 50's entered the area where I was. I held up the part in my hand to ask if he could please help me find the size that I needed. He literally and roughly snatched the part out of my hand and returned it to stock. He looked angry. I was appalled and felt frightened by his behavior. When I proceeded to state my need, he verbally cut me off and said the store did not have it. The man never allowed me to explain what I needed. To date I cannot understand why he treated me that way unless it was my skin color. I just don't get it but will never spend one cent with this business. We are both minorities AND I am part Asian! I agree with a reviewer below who said that you need to come in here using some common sense; this is a local, very small Ace Hardware, not a Home Depot, not a Lowe's, so if you come in here looking for everything they carry and then some you're looking in the wrong place, and frankly not using your head very well. Despite the size of this particular Ace, however, there is a cornucopia of goods jam packed in here and if you're in need of something and don't know where to start (it can be overwhelming, admittedly), just ask the woman who owns the place. She's super nice and always jumps to help, and despite it seeming like the place has little to no order, she apparently has a method to navigating the madness. I really am impressed with the amount of stuff this store manages to provide, and the prices are reasonable considering the owners could be charging an arm and a leg for everything. When my parents were renovating our house years ago, this Ace was a lifesaver so many times over; having it just down the street not only saved us money, but it saved us time. We still come here when we need something small and quick, and I love how many decades this store has been around. My only real complaint is how unorganized and cramped everything is kept here, and that the curb appeal of this Ace could be majorly improved. However, service is excellent and the variety of goods offered is large, so I'll keep bringing my business here. read more

This hardware store is a bit smaller then the average Home Depot but it had just about everything you need. And of course they had the screw I was looking for. I went to the Dutton Hardware store on Sept 24; 2019 to find a light fixture for over the bathroom sink. The owner thought and said go to the back of the store and look up to see the light fixture. I couldn't find it and after asking three times if he could show me he reluctantly walked back. The fixture was high up next to the ceiling and was too big. He sarcastically said "that's what I told you." I asked why he was nasty? He denied nasty and I left. His mother, Susan, was never nasty. I left after telling him that he didn't like his job and took it out on his customers. Been going there for years but won't return. read more
