Duo's Taqueria stands out as one of the best Mexican restaurants in Pittsburgh. The food is incredibly authentic and delicious, truly a treat for the taste buds. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality justifies the premium. A tip for your visit: bring a sweater if you plan to sit near the wall mounted AC, as it can get quite cold. This place is a fun experience. We wanted to try to go see the Duolingo office and saw that there was a restaurant attached. The experience was so incredibly fun. The setting definitely gives classy bar vibes, but fun banter. The service was incredibly great and so informative! Just know that you may be dropping more than $50 based on the cost of the items. We arrived when Duo normally does their happy hour specials for the Duolingo employees on Wednesdays; we thought we wouldn't even be able to snag a table, but we were! We knew coming in that it would be expensive, but it truly was delicious. We ordered the pomelo and there was definitely a stronger hand that made the drink. I was incredibly buzzed by the end of finishing the glass! The salsa y totopos (salsa and chips) were AMAZING! The chips were from corn that was sourced from Mexico. I like breaking my chips to dip into sauces and these chips were the perfect ones to help me do it. They didn't crumble like a normal tortilla chip would and I was able to try many sauces many times with just one chip. The guacamole had a surprising spice quick that I was not expecting. The al pastor tacos were also delicious! It was loaded and so flavorful with each bite. I wish they had provided another lemon; nonetheless, it was still delicious. This is definitely a fun place to come and try out if you're a big fan of Duolingo. It's exciting to see the buzz of what they're all about and I'm impressed that they were able to make a restaurant out of a learning experience. This would be a 4 1/2 star review....I had lunch there today solo. The servers were nice but a little perplexed at me dining alone. Laying that aside, the food was quite good and the ambiance & decor were bougie-chic. The server explained that they have a bigger menu at night but lunch is more about tacos - keeping it simple and authentic Mexican. The portions are fairly generous, but the price point is on the high side. Guac is $15; 2 tacos are $15. You also had to order salsa - which came out in a set of 4, pineapple, arbol, salsa verde (very good), & guaca-salsa (avocado-laced salsa which had a nice spice). The guac was fresh and good, though there were too many jalapeños for my taste. The "chips" are huge 1/2 moon hunks of tacos -- something the server says is a specialty, taking something like 15 hours to create. They're thick, crunch, corny, and quite good (my husband later said they're too thick for him). You'll fill up *fast* on these! My tacos were flash-fried oyster mushrooms - perfectly cooked - paired with chipotle mayo (there was not nearly enough of this), cabbage, pico de gallo & salsa verde (there was too much of this). The tacos were quite good, but I really wished they allowed you to mix & match. I enjoyed the meal and will definitely return. read more

Great tacos, but Duo's Taqueria feels more like an attraction than a regular taco spot. The meat is well seasoned and the salsa is great, but the value isn't great. The food is on the high-end cost-wise (not surprising given the location) and the portions are on the smaller end than what you'll find elsewhere. They do have rotating coupons that you can get if you do a one-question (easy) Spanish quiz, but they range in usefulness. Wow.....just wow. Duo's Taqueria is Pittsburghs BEST Taco spot. Since having authentic tacos out west I haven't had great ones since...until now. Pittsburgh finally has its taco spot. Connected to Duolingo's HQ this spot sits right on the street and is hard to miss. Great offset colors that make it pop out of the building and a great aroma that pulls you in. Everything here is a learning experience, literally. The menu is in Spanish which I love because it promotes diversity and respect to other cultures. I love a great challenge and if you order 3 or more tacos you can get 10% OFF your order if you complete the Spanish word challenge....I got my 10%! It was fun and rewarding. I'd love to see more places do this. The food here is just hand down incredible. There is culture within every bite and the flavors are a burst in your mouth. I have a high standard for street tacos because I'm from Texas and these hit the spot! Sadly they didn't have al pastor when we went (which is what they're known for) so we got the Lengua and the Carnitas instead but they were luckily good. Not sure if there's inside seating (didn't look like it) but they have standing tables right outside. Did the Duolingo challenge and got $2 off. Price was decent considering the location. The newly expanded duos still has great tacos! Their menu has also expanded and they have main dishes and cocktails now! I love the al pastor tacos! They use corn tortillas and it's perfectly balanced. My partner really liked the chicken main dish which is like DIY tacos and it comes with beans and a molé sauce that was really good. It's very pretty too! They use really nice dinnerware here and the vibes inside are amazing. The renovations are beautiful and it's very spacious inside. There's an upstairs and downstairs. They take Resy reservations but we were able to get a table for a large group without a wait on a Friday night a week after they opened. They also have outdoor seating too. Service was really attentive and you can also flip your coaster to speak with the staff in Spanish, which is a really cool concept. They have a great guac and their salsas are pretty good. Chips are homemade. The only thing is it does get a bit pricey. Definitely worth checking out tho! read more

This restaurant was honestly very tasty. The atmosphere was pleasant. But, as a Duolingo user, and this restaurant being billed as an 'immersive experience' for language learning it was a huge disappointment. There is no such environment to practice Spanish. it is simply, quite an expensive, restaurant that serves good food. There was no opportunity to practice with any wait staff, let alone immersion of any kind. So, if you want to go for the food, you'll be pleased but with a lighter wallet. If you want to go practice Spanish, it will not happen. I wish they would've advertised clearly that the restaurant is no longer what they originally envisioned it to be. But, will give some stars for the good food. read more

Ok, so I'm driving around and I see this cute little window, serving tacos in East Liberty. I was intrigued so I parked and walked up to the window. It was sooo cute. They have tacos and drinks and it was really simple, but so unique! I ordered a vegetarian taco which is called Nogales and it's filled with cactus, Avocado and queso fresco (cheese), Guacamole and chips. What's really cute and unique is that there is a screen and you get challenged to guess the correct answer to a question about a Spanish word, and if you guess the correct answer you get a 10% discount!! It was fun, and I guessed correctly so I got that discount!!! The taco was pretty good, and the Guacomole was good, but pretty basic. Also it was five dollars and it was a small amount. It came in a small condiment size container. I was a little upset about this because it was definitely not worth five dollars, but it wasn't bad. One note .. the beverage menu only mentioned cocktails, beer and horchata, but we saw a waitress walk by with Jarritos to another table .. so if you have kids, know that other options are available. We started with guacamole and chicharricos. Fresh and really great. Our only minor complaint was that we ended up with some guac and no tostadas. (We probably should have asked for another tostada or some chips.) We tried tacos al pastor, suadero and hongos fritos. All excellent. Bright flavors, great green salsa. I'd put the spice at a nice medium. My daughter thought it was a bit on the spicy side and my son (who likes everything hot) thought it needed more. We ordered flan, and it was .. okay. The ambience was great - some fun Duolingo touches - and you can order in English or Spanish. (You flip the drink coaster to indicate your preference). The kids felt they were able to practice and if they looked confused by an explanation, our waiter switched to English to be sure they understood. Duo's making up for his bad rap with "accidentally" kidnapping people who lost their streaks (it's a joke) by making delicious tacos! Duo's serves up some of the best tacos in Pittsburgh. They are the only place that I know of that makes Al Pastor tacos the right way using trompo. Their other tacos are also great. Their sides (especially the frijoles charros) compliment the rest of the menu perfectly. To cool off, they have a lot of awesome drinks to pair up the tacos with. They always have a vegan selection for anyone that can't eat meat. I haven't tried their dessert yet so I'll have to come back for that. As a bonus, you can get a discount or free stuff while practicing your Spanish. They'll ask you a doable question and you can celebrate to the lights and music. It's a bit on the pricier side but they don't skimp on the meat. Right now, they also don't have seating and only three tables, but I've heard their planning on expanding that. This is such a fun new place!! I wasn't really planning on getting any food on my walk around east liberty, but this new taco stand had a ton of people waiting in line, and tacos are hard to pass up! There is a walk up window to order at. You can order in English or Spanish, but a lot of people were trying to test their Spanish speaking. They also offer 10% off if you take the Spanish language challenge (answer a vocabulary question on the big screen near the ordering window). I ordered al pastor tacos and aguacate y limon (avocado and lemon drink). There were a lot of interesting tacos to choose from like tongue, beef cheek, and a vegetarian cactus taco. The tacos are small but they were flavorful, and the hot sauces that come with the tacos really add to the taco. The al pastor came with pineapple and a radish slice. I also liked the corn tortilla it was served on. It wasn't the best taco ever, but overall, this was a fun ordering experience and I got a pretty tasty authentic taco.
