Tacos de suadero
Ailun H.

Duolingo opened a taco spot? We definitely made an effort to check it out during out weekend trip to Pittsburg trip last week. I was expecting it to be more of a casual taco joint, but it was far from it. The interior is modern, with a lot of warm lighting and elegant decor. We got there on a Friday around 1:30 PM, 30 minutes before they closed in preparation for dinner. Fortunately, the service was quick, and we were in and out within 40 minutes. TACOS DE SUADERO (3) - 14 Each taco contained a fair amount of beef brisket in each one. However, the beef was pretty dry and not the most flavorful. Probably our least favorite out of the tacos we ordered. TACOS DE AL PASTOR (3) - 14 Definitely more of a modern twist to tacos than traditional. I felt like there was more pineapple flavor than al pastor in these al pastor tacos. These were okay at best. GUACAMOLE Y TOTOPOS - 15 I actually really enjoyed this appetizer. They gave us plenty of guac, which was creamy and lightly seasoned. The totopos were super thick and crispy (also not too salty), and we got an extra bowl of them without charge since we had so much guac leftover. We also got an order of TACOS DE ESTILLO BAJA, which is crispy shrimp tacos. I didn't try one since the salsa and pico de gallo all had plenty of cilantro mixed in, but my friend thought these were the best tacos out of the three we tried. Duolingo... How are your tacos just as pricy as your subscription? Each taco could easily be finished within 2-3 bites. Besides the guacamole y totopos, I personally didn't think the suadero or al pastor tacos were worth getting.

Duo's in East Liberty explores Mexico's incredible culinary heritage. Dishes and drinks like their aguachile and agua fresca brought me back to my trip to Oaxaca!   We sat outside in their spacious patio since it was so nice outside. The inside has large gorgeous bar and plenty of seating as well. Our server was nice and patient even though we had trouble yapping instead of looking at the menu and ordering. Everything we had was flavorful, fresh, and delightful. You can't skip out on dessert and while the tamal de cacao might look a little unusual, I promise it's delicious!

The inside was really cute and well designed. Definitely more modern. Service was attentive and quick. The food portions were a bit smaller than I thought but they did put a good about of protein on each taco. I enjoyed the fish one the most because it was flavorful and not dry. The chips and guacamole were pretty good. Overall decent place but nothing that stands.

Love everything about this place. The vibe, the food, the service...all 5 star! We have been for brunch and for dinner and both times were excellent. The drinks are amazing and while the menu isn't huge, what they do offer is elevated and delicious. The margaritas are not made from a pre made mix and the food didn't disappoint. Roasted chicken was my favorite and the guacamole is crave-worthy. Street parking can be a challenge.

I will say the portions are quite small but with everything being made in-house, it's worth trying out this authentic Mexican restaurant! The modern vibe from the menus to the plating to the interior design makes it a cozy spot for evening drinks or weekend brunch. We got to try the pozole verde, chilaquiles, an horchata, cafe de olla and an agua fresca. The star of the show was the corn pancakes and the chocolate concha.

Tostadas de atun (tuna)

Duo's restaurant is owned by the educational-technology company Duolingo. Its website says that it serves foods inspired by Mexico City and Mexico's 31 states. Examples of menu items are tacos, shrimp cocktail, flautas, NY strip prime, rotisserie chicken, goat birria, octopus, and flan. Options are available for meats, seafoods, and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free foods. This restaurant also has a bar that serves cocktails. My husband and I ate one lunch here. Our hostess/waitress provided timely and friendly service. Considering that my husband is of Mexican descent, and we have eaten authentic foods in several Mexican cities, here are my ratings for what we ate here: Tostadas de Atun - 4 stars - Big eye tuna crudo, avocado, salsa negra, and sesame seed were atop tostadas. The spiciness was moderate. My husband took a couple of bites, and I ate the rest. Quesadilla de Col Rizada - 4 stars - A large tortilla was filled with kale, queso oaxaca, chivo blanco beans, and salsa ranchera. I thought that this quesadilla tasted good. Tacos de Cachetada - 3 stars - These soft tacos contained prime ribeye steak, costra cheese, salsa crudo, asada onions, and cilantro. My husband called these tacos "bland," and he used my salsa to add flavor. In addition, the tacos were soggy. The total price for this one appetizer and two entrees was $50 plus tax and tip.

Pollo Rostizado (4/5)
Ryan S.

I got the pollo rostizado (4/5), which was a lot of food; it was one of the few times I've had leftovers. It had a good flavor, but I wish it had less sauce, more beans, and a bit crispier skin. The quantity definitely justified the price; a lot of the other options seemed expensive for the amount of food. The service was good (4/5), and the restaurant is quite well decorated with a fancier interior, making it a great date night spot (4/5).

Chocolate tamale. So interesting!

Another excellent visit here, though upon my second visit there are definitely a couple of things I think could stand improvement to make this five stars. Still love the vibe and love the tacos! I got the oyster mushroom tacos again which are an absolutely amazing vegetarian choice. My friend got the al pastor tacos and was very happy with them. On my last visit we got the queso fundido, which got very hard if you let it sit for a minute. This time we got the guac, which the server recommended with a special preparation that included some salsa with jalapeños and the queso. It had an underlying smoky flavor and was delicious, and hot when you hit a jalapeño. I liked it a lot and liked that the server proactively brought us more chips so none would be wasted. I ended up taking the leftover of this home and it was just as good there. I got an Agua Fresca as I did last time and these are nice choices as nonalcoholic drink options. A couple of small misses here. First, being a Duolingo concept, this place has no right to be such a fantastic restaurant, which it truly is. One of Pittsburgh's best. Still, you come here as a Duolingo learner wanting to feel connected to the concept in someway and the only connection is a neon sign of Duo at the entrance. I feel there should be some tie to the learning via a QR code or something special to make you feel engaged if you are a Duolingo learner when you are here. I currently have a streak of over 1000 days and feel very connected to the learning and the company. Also, the dessert menu is only three items none of which got us particularly excited. The dessert menu could use a little upgrade to make the end of the experience as great as the rest of it.

Drinks are a 5 food a 3. Went for lunch all had tortillas. The tortillas were very dry and the everything lack salt. Order them with cheese to at least add salt. The star was the chocolate tamale.

This was a long awaited visit to a place that we were so excited to check out. It did not disappoint. While I would've expected, there would be a casual multinational food court because that would be more along the lines of Duolingo's style, this authentic Mexican restaurant was amazing. The service was impeccable, and the food was really top-notch. These were not your regular American tacos or American chips and guac. We had flan for dessert, following flautas, well spiced tacos, and super fresh appetizers. Believe it or not the founder and CEO of Duolingo himself was casually hanging out at the bar enjoying his evening. I was honored to be able to have a few quick complimentary words with him. If you're in the area or if you're a fan of tacos, check it out.

I'll start w a summary - Overall, the food was okay. I wouldn't come back for it but the service is what puts this place down so much. The manager was the only person that seemed professional and attentive. Bar seating was so uncomfortable that I ended up standing for some of my meal. Entered around 7:45 and was told it was 45 minutes for a seat so we gladly took bar seating. Staff initially politely greeted us. We ordered our appetizers and a drink. My girlfriend's espresso martini was stiff and flavorless. The tostado de atún & flauta de tinga were both good. The problems started after our apps. We waited quite some time before the bartenders asked us what we wanted for an entree. For a period of time our waters were empty. Our dinners came out and the birria was okay but not great, kind of a watered down broth with an aftertaste of spice. The gringa al pastor tacos were good. The pollo rostizado was too messy to want to eat in a restaurant. The bar lighting was also so dim that my friend didn't realize the color difference to realize what was salsa vs black beans. We then waited at least fifteen minutes after our meals were finished if we wanted dessert. There were two bartenders that didn't seem to communicate at all so one asked us if we needed anything else after we were waiting 10+ minutes for our desserts already. The desserts - flan & tamal de cacao - were fine. The flan was thicker & creamier than most, which I preferred and had a strong caramel taste if that's your thing. The mousse was airy but the tamal was 99% corn and 1% chocolate flavoring.

Excellent Mexican food, including tacos and more meaty main dishes. Gigantic portions for a fair price. Nice date night vibe but also some larger tables for groups and families. Our server told us that the street food portion of the menu would have smaller and sharable plates. They were sharable but not small! The chips and guac are a formidable starter; very dense chips and a heaping mound of guac. The tuna tostadas are filling as well. Nice change of pace to have raw tuna on a menu with many other cooked meats. We also got the flautas, which are chicken stuffed hard-shell tacos doused in salsa verde. They were humongous and delicious. The order came with two and I could only eat one by myself. We also got a side of frijoles refried black beans to take home for our 9-month old (great baby food!). We would have been stuffed after those sharable plates. But we thought we must try a main dish and ordered the pollo rostizado. It included four large pieces of chicken (two breasts, a thigh, and a drumstick, from my count). I mean, that could have been our dinner in and of itself. The chicken was very tender and juicy. My only constructive feedback is that some of the dishes were too saucy. The flautas could have had half as much salsa verde and still been delicious. The chicken came on a bed of black beans, but those were washed away in an ocean of sauce.

When you drive by, you may not know what's inside. But what's inside is a lot, and it's very good, too. First off, the decor is very cool, and the music is authentic Mexican. The hosts were very warm and welcoming. The food was delicious and it came out fast. They have a nice collection of Mexican sodas. There are booths, tables, bar seating and lots of outdoor seating. I heard employees of Duolingo eat free on Wednesday nights, so everything was hopping. I'm a Duolingo customer, so this was a fun evening for me. I think anyone would enjoy it here

Are there benefits if you have a high Duolingo streak? Just curious 😅

When it opened in 2022, there was an "Español Challenge" in order to earn a 10 to 20 percent discount. I don't see that discount mentioned anymore on their website.

The restaurant is located at the bottom of the Maverick and the decor is absolute gorgeous. By the end, I was convinced that their wallpaper would look great in my living room. Our waiter was very lovely and attentive. There was one small issues with our appetizers which resulted in them being delayed. He took full responsibility and made it right. I really liked my pear centric cocktail, it had a very appealing purple shade. My salmon was very good with nice bright flavors. It was a little spicier than expected but not too hot either. The coconut rice was good to help with that. The Korean fried tofu was perfectly crunchy and slightly spicy (this time it was expected). Good flavors to it. The babaganoush was excellent with all the extra little toppings on top. The seeded crackers were excellent and I wished I had ask if they made them there. My friend had the crispy eggplant and bread service (no gluten for me sadly). She said everything was good as well. We shared the Japanese cheesecake. It was absolutely delightful. The texture is so light and creamy! The banana pieces with the creme brulee crust were so good. Excellent caramel sauce. Overall, trendy space with good food and drinks!
