Beautiful outdoor covered patio and extensive menu of BBQ options!! We stopped for a weekend Brunch around 10:30 and the place was still completely empty! The hostess stand is a bit of a farce - the employees seemed to hope that people would just seat themselves. Even when we were greeted - they said to just pick your own seat anyway! The decor is pretty cool. I'm partial to the stacked wood for the smoker as you enter, but the rustic feel of everything made the vibe come alive. With the smoker right next to the patio, the wonderful smell of the barbecue permeated the entire restaurant. The brunch menu was just as extensive as their lunch/dinner menu. We grabbed two coffees - which seems like a rarity - as they brought sugar and milk in little dipping sauce cups. The candied bacon was a MUST. 6 slices of thick cut bacon drizzled in brown sugar for only $6. Walter's Benedict with Pork Belly will stalk my dreams... the flavorful crust charred to the fork tender pork belly casually laying on the buttery, crispy chive biscuit smothered in the perfect hollandaise is the brunch you dream of but never really comprehend. Brisket Hash was unfortunately a nightmare though. The menu doesn't inform you that the brisket will be chip chopped into fine dust and coated in hot sauce. It was so spicy that it was almost inedible and the 1/4" of oil under the potatoes and eggs proved that even the hot sauce felt like crying. First time dining at Walter's. Decided to go with the fried chicken sandwich and a side of potato salad. Sandwich was good. Would have greatly benefited from more sauce. Probably wouldn't order again as I'd definitely prefer one of their bbq sandwiches over this. Potato salad was pretty standard. Also tried some brisket and pork belly. Both were tasty. Went for a late lunch around 3 PM on a Sunday, so it wasn't crowded and the service was very good. I was worried, though that either the food would take a long time because they didn't have some ready, or that it would be left over from earlier in the day and would be dry. On the contrary, the food seemingly arrived within five minutes of ordering, yet everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. I got the lunchbox special with ribs, mac & cheese, and coleslaw, and it came with a piece of cornbread. Five stars across the board. Even the brewed iced tea was perfectly sweetened. I had the bowl, that's displayed in the picture, and it wasn't very good. The rice to veggie ratio was not good and even the cilantro lime sauce didn't help with the flavor. I thankfully got a side of Mac and Cheese and that was the best part of the meal. The beer was pretty good though. The waiter was nice and super friendly though! The outside area is pretty nice even in the cold months as there are heaters to keep you warm. Not sure if I'd come back for the food, but maybe for a casual drink. read more

We found a seat outside. Food and drink ordering is still available via QR code, which makes it easy. They had a few food and drink specials for the movie night, so I ordered a soft pretzel (which came with their delicious queso) and a tequila cocktail. Our items came out quick. The movie night was okay. The volume was not up so it made it very hard to hear the movie. There were also people playing games right in front of us so it made it hard to see the movie. I was GOING to be mad. Because I opened the "lunch box" I got and there were only two ribs in there. Which I would have preferred smaller sides for at least three ribs. I'm so excited to have a good bbq spot on Butler plus they have outdoor seating which is chefs kiss. The potato salad was an interesting mustard color which made me hesitate because I'm not a mustard fan but it turned out to be my favorite side dish. I'm a sucker for whipped butter so theirs with the jalapeño corn bread is my guilty pleasure. I've gotten the lean brisket twice and the fatty brisket once and the fatty brisket had a bigger portion than the lean pieces. I'll have to go back and keep trying both to increase my sample size- for research purposes but also because I love this place. read more

I rock with Walter's they're open pretty late to be on Butler Street. I love that they show sports on the TV and have nice music and yard games making this place great for gathering. It does however get really crowded making it hard to find somewhere to eat your food. I always go straight for the chicken sandwich with no bacon and their Mac and cheese. I was a bit confused when I bit into the cornbread once and it had jalepenos in it. It was a bit of a no Bueno for me. The service is okay but sometimes you can see the frustration of the employees on the busier days. Now you have to wait to be told where you're allowed to sit. It completely ruins the experience of one of the only outdoor bars in Pittsburgh. I stopped into Walter's Southern Kitchen for Lunch on a Tuesday. There were a couple of other folks there, but it was otherwise pretty quiet. I get the impression that this is more of a dinner/night-spot kind of place. I sat at the bar, and the barmaid was very friendly and attentive. The bar, however, was a little sticky and the place had a less than clean smell to it. I ordered a brisket sandwich with fries, and was told that I could have it one of two ways: sliced without sauce, or chopped and tossed with hot sauce. I went with the latter. The brisket was decent, but there was not a lot of it and the sauce was not spicy or hot. The fries were also a disappointment. They were frozen processed fries, and I expected something better from a place that obviously knows who to prepare stuff from scratch. They also had an odd kind of "artificial" taste that I couldn't nail down. Overall, the place wasn't awful, and they have a great location and friendly staff, but based on my admittedly small sample, the food needs some improvement in my opinion. read more

I was in town for a bodybuilding show, and I always do my due diligence for food when traveling. I don't want mediocre food; I want incredible food. I've had a lot of ribs and pork belly in my 55 years, but I decided to make myself miserable on 3 things that I just didn't want to stop eating at Walter's because it was so damn good: 1. The ribs. They fell apart, and I stopped only when I couldn't eat anymore. They were divine. 2. The pork belly was the most moist and fatty pork belly I've ever had. It just couldn't have been any better. I doubt I will find pork belly this good without going back to Pittsburgh. 3. The cornbread with whipped honey butter. I was disappointed when I asked if they had a dessert menu and was told they had no desserts... until I had the cornbread. Absolutely insanely good. I called it quits after 1 pound of ribs, half pound of pork belly, 2 sides of candied bacon, 4.5 pieces of cornbread, side of collard greens, side of coleslaw, and a side of potato salad. Had I had pockets, I would have ordered more and taken it with me. If there is better BBQ in Pittsburgh, I would be shocked. We split two lunchbox specials and had ribs, brisket, brussels, mashed potato, mac and cheese, and fries. Everything was tasty and met expectations. This place has great food! They do a pretty good brunch in town and we loved their fried chicken and waffles and biscuits and waffles. You can tell they brine their chicken and the breading is very well seasoned. I do like things peppery though. The chicken and biscuits can get a bit messy and the plate wasn't big enough for all of it. When my friend cut into their egg, it almost went onto the table. I really like their brisket here too. This time the brisket sandwich was only ok, but I think the slices of brisket might be better than chopped brisket. There is not a whole lot of service here since you order on your phone after scanning a QR code. There's really only someone bringing your food to you and that's really it. However, the process to order and check out was really seamless. I actually liked that a lot. It was a rainy cold day when we went and there was limited seating inside. We didn't love the bar top seating especially since we reserved standard seating on Open Table and our party had a dog with us. Love that this place is dog friendly! It was just hard to have the dog there while sitting at the bar top. They have a lot of outdoor seating so it would be great for a nice day. They also have mimosas and bloody Mary's on their menu too. It's a little confusing when entering because there's no hostess to really tell you what's going on. I tried Walter's Easter weekend as I was visiting my Mom I purchased the fatty brisket, Mac and cheese and potato salad. Upon entering restaurant is clean, music playing bar in the middle and seating throughout the rest of the restaurant. Music playing and to go orders had to be placed at the bar. Bartender was professional, courteous and answered all our questions and if she wasn't sure she went to the kitchen and asked. After placing our order the food came out in 6 minutes. The brisket was full of flavor, tender (melt in your mouth) the macaroni and cheese was made well however needed some seasoning upon adding seasoning ...delicious. The potato salad I am not a fan of due the amount of mustard, and flavoring was not to my liking. Lastly, I would recommend Walter's and I definitely will try more food choices when I go home to Pittsburgh again. read more
