Stopped by Mad Mex after shopping for a late night dinner. We had the chips and salsa and some really delicious cocktails to start. Tried their mandarin orange margarita with fresh squeezed tangerine lime and tequila and it was pretty bomb (not too sweet and fantastic tequila) and their sangria was totally awesome. For dinner, we both got the grilled chicken tacos that come stuffed full of deliciousness. They have fresh corn, cilantro, crema, and fresh radishes on top of the yummy chicken. The sides are black beans and mexican rice which were perfect. It's a great later dinner option and comes with some fun music and fab art to boot. Service is always good too. read more

It's been a minute since I paid a visit to Mad Mex - stopped in the other day to celebrate cinco de mayo. Went with the Tres Decadas Taco Trio with a side of rice and beans. This dish included a pork and pineapple taco, a beef birria taco, and their chicken tinga taco. Overall, the pork and pineapple taco was the highlight of the meal.... So good. I will order again. The chicken tinga taco was good, but tasted like your average chicken taco. Beef birria.... unfortunately the worst taco on the entire plate. Huge chunks of mushy beef fat. Bad flavor. I've had birria in the past and this is not it. Avoid at all costs. Side of rice and beans.... Not like your usual Mexican joint lol. Literally just a scoop of wet, whole, unsalted black beans straight out of the can. Not refried. Rice wasn't that great. Just go with the fries for an extra dollar. Margs were tasty. Frozen, on the rocks, salt or sugar.... don't matter. I don't judge. 10/10. A+ Chips were hot and tasty. Salsa is pretty average. Overall, great place. Good vibes. I used to come here 1-2 times per week but sad to say things have slowly started to go down hill at this location specifically. While I live 5 minutes away, I find myself staying after work and hitting the robinson location instead. More often than not the glasses are not fully clean and the bar isn't as vibrant since some of the bartenders that made it special have moved elsewhere. The wings are more inconsistently prepared here versus the robinson location as well. With burgatory a mile down with great happy hour apps and now the new primantis across the street, it's a tougher sell to make this a priority anymore read more

So annoyed. Visited today for my son's birthday at 6:20 because this is where he wanted to go. I get it, it was national taco day, but they had tons of open tables and we were turned away because they said the kitchen was too busy to seat people for an hour. Figure it out, plan accordingly, this is an epic sign of a horribly managed business. This place has been this way for awhile; this is NOT the first time we've walked into a half full restaurant to be put on a massive wait. I would not recommend this business to anyone. I've been here dozens of times, but it's the first time I'm writing a review. One of the things I love about this place is that it's so consistent, you know exactly what you're getting. You're not coming here to be healthy, or for the best Tex Mex food you'll ever have, but you come here because the food is pretty good, the margaritas are perfection, and they've perfected the chips and salsa game. I think it is absolutely a dining classic in Pittsburgh, especially as one of the few late night establishments. I decided to try out this location for a weekday dinner. The menu listed a variety of appetizers, entrees, sides, desserts, and beverages. Prices were good. My husband and I waited at the front entrance for a minute or two before an employee arrived. She did not greet us, but she walked us to a clean booth. The booth, though was also very narrow, so my husband had to push the table toward me so he could sit down. Our waitress was friendly. She immediately brought our waters. Then she was gone for a while. She returned after many minutes and smelled like cigarette smoke, so I think that she had been taking a break. Throughout the rest of the service, she was very timely and regularly checked in with us. Here are my reviews for the foods: Guacamole - 4.5 stars - This guacamole had been made earlier in the day, but it was very tasty and was the highlight of the entire meal. Salsa - 3.5 stars - This salsa was very thick and chunky, but it had a good flavor. Mad Mex quesadilla with chicken - 3.5 stars - This quesadilla contained cheese, peppers, onions, and my choice of protein, which was chicken. The ingredients were fresh. Unlike many other restaurant's quesadillas, this quesadilla did not drip juices and did not fall apart. Steak burrito - 3.5 stars - This burrito contained rice and beans with some steak, and my husband commented that it was a little plain. He did eat all of it. This flagship restaurant of the Big Burrito company has always impressed me with its unique style and interesting twists on classic Tex-Mex fare. Who doesn't love the Gobblerito?!? I find myself waiting for it like many wait for McDonalds to roll out the McRib. This location has a great bar and I love their happy hours! In the summer the garage doors are up and the warm breezes carry the smells of grilled meats out to lure you in from busy McKnight road. I suggest answering that call. read more

Decent service. Drinks are OK for being watered down. If you decide to purchase anything that contains meat, make sure you ask for double or triple the meat just so you can have an average decent protein filled meal. It's absolutely disgusting. If you order a burrito, you get maybe three tiny slices of meat 99% rice and beans and maybe .05 % flavor. Very disappointed and the fact that it's been getting worse since Covid, I will just never eat there ever again.. Aladdin is right down the road way better way cheaper. read more

Detailed Review: Mango Margarita: 3/5 Good flavor but didn't seem to have much alcohol. Did really appreciate that they have Tajin for the rim. Chicken Taco Salad: 2/5 The taco salad was pretty straight forward. Not much flavor to anything in it. The shell tasted heavily of stale oil and the ranch was just generic bottles ranch. Steak and Street Corn Tacos: 2/5 Was not expecting the steak to be cubed. The slaw on top was good but the tortillas were disintegrating in my hand. Also disagree with serving black beans as the "rice and beans" side. Overall not super impressed. Fantastic Mexican spot! Visited here for dinner a few times and it is starting to become one of our favorite spots in the north hills. Although the salsa options and queso options are all great, we always go with the guac to start out. Most recently, I tried the BIG Burrito and it did not disappoint. I wish I would have taken a photo but was too tempted to dig right in that I didn't take time to capture the moment. First of all, the name is no exaggeration. This burrito is massive - take however big you are expecting and 3x it, and that's the size of this burrito. And not only is it huge, but also delicious. The blend of chicken, steak, corn, cheese, sauce, and waffle fries surprisingly hits the spot. Spicy, but just the perfect level of spicy. We always have great service and just love the ambiance. If I had one critique (as I demonstrate how my age is trending upwards), the music is a bit loud. Depending on where you sit, you might not be hearing too much conversation. But hey, that could be a good thing depending on who you are dining with! Anytime I have friends or family visit from out of town, I try to fit in a meal here to showcase the local food scene. We did have small order or wings as an appetizer and nothing special there. Overall food was standard. I have been coming to this Mad Mex since it opened in the 90's, and now that I live in Ohio I always make a point of going here when I'm in Pittsburgh. The one in Columbus is just not the same, so it's a treat when I'm in the Burgh. Although the location has had it's up's and downs over the years, my recent visit last weekend was great. The place was packed early on Friday evening, and the buzz was good. I took my Mom and Dad, and we all enjoyed the experience. We started with chips and the excellent salsa, and Dad and I had a couple of draft beers from the rotating menu. Dinner was a burrito for me, a chimmi for Mom, and fish-and-chips tacos for Dad. Eveything was good, and the service matched. The place was clean and well run, and just as I remembered it. A solid five! read more

Absolutely love this location. They have some seriously awesome employees, and we especially love the bar staff. It may seem weird, but they have the best wings, which are half off (drafts too!) during happy hour. San Francisco and Southwest are my favorite sauces, and I prefer them wild (you can get them mild or insane, but that's just a bit too spicy for me). Their blue cheese is magic. Absolutely the best. My husband won't eat it anywhere else, and he loves theirs. They have a great local beer selection, and they usually have quite a few IPAs. It can get pretty busy during happy hour, but the staff is always very attentive. It can get loud sometimes too, but on more than one occasion we have commented on how good their music/playlists are. I'm a big fan of the mahi mahi tacos, any of the salads (try the vegan chipotle ranch - it has a little kick and is absolutely amazing on anything.. seriously, I'll dip a plain tortilla in it), the southwest bowl, and the shrimp mushroom and spinach bare-ito! The fajitas and anything with the birria beef are really good too. My husband loves the big burrito, wing wrap, and the waffle fries. The picka dippa is great too, especially if you're sharing with a group. We always get the queso, guacamole, and black bean dip. Their corn salsa is our favorite, and you can get free chips and salsa if you sit at the bar. You really can't go wrong with anything here. read more

Mad Mex has long been a favorite of mine. Their incredible menu with just the right flair to set it apart from your favorite authentic Mexican restaurant is what makes this place a treat. The salsa is the best - while chunky and non traditional, you won't find a better and fresher flavor. The magnitude and diversity of both the drink and food menu delights me/borderline overwhelms in the best possible way. Watch for seasonal specials at the bar and on the menu. This time I tried the cranberry frozen margarita. The flavor was exceptional, even though I was served (and charged) for a size I did not order. Each time, I asked for a sugar rim and both times my drink showed up naked. Disappointing but I can live. Be sure to check out half-price happy hour during the week for deals on said margaritas and also the incredible wings, which showcase Max mex sauces, which are my all time favorite. While my experience at this particular location was sub par to say the least - wrong drink order, incorrect menu items were delivered, and part of our order went missing, leaving our delivered food to get cold while we waited - I still look forward to a treat from Max Mex. They have a great happy hour but beers are very heavy on IPA's , miss the good old days when they had a more diverse selection. I had the happy hour wings which could have been cooked a bit more...they were cooked but gummy. Also tried the Poutine. Not bad although any Poutine I have had before had gravy poured over the potatoes not placed under and no, it didn't seep through the the potatoes it was put on the plate before they were placed on it as they had no gravy on them. We really enjoy Mad Mex and during COVID-19, have enjoyed them via DoorDash. Our favorite time of year is any time of year they're offering the Gobblerito. If you haven't had one yet, you need one the next time they offer one. It's in essence Thanksgiving in a burrito. It's ginormous and unbelievably delicious. It has turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, black beans and stuffing in a burrito. They give you cranberry and gravy on the side. We try to be good and eat half one day and half the next day. It's very hard to resist it. The next day we're happy to have it a second time. Recently, we wanted something different than the standard Mexican Food. So glad that my husband thought to get delivery from them and try something new. We had three different kinds of wings and all three were delicious. The SAN FRANCISCO (Spicy-sweet and garlicky) were my favorite. I also liked the other two HONEY CHIpOTLE BBQ Barbecue (sauce smoked up with chipotle peppers and honey and SOUTHWESTERN (Fresh cilantro, olive oil, lime, Mexican oregano and garlic). The blue cheese that came with it was one of the best blue cheese that I've ever had. My mom and I were obsessed. We got the pick a dippa and chose three different dips that came with two full bags of chips which were very good. The Fire Roasted Tomato-Chipotle salsa was very hot. My mouth was on fire. I liked the cheese dip, but it also made my mouth on fire. We loved the guacamole, which was so creamy and exactly what you want in a guacamole.
