Went mid-afternoon, no crowds, sat right down. Service was fast and efficient. Food was delicious!
Had to check off smoked meat from my food bucket list of Montreal and was told this is one of two places that are worth going. I got the super combo. It was good but my taste buds are loyal to Texas brisket. The service was nice and quick. It was a little loud but not so bad that we couldn't have a conversation. Bottom line is, I would come again and suggest it to try some smoked meat
This is a very efficient operation. The staff understand the system and get you through it. I appreciate that. I wanted to get good poutine somewhere, and all I'd had was bad, and Dunns delivered. I'll admit, it's not my favorite food, but they did it very well. Fries were crunchy until the gravy ruined it. I got the smoked meat, I.e. pastrami, one called Dunns Famous and it was about as good as poutine can probably be. The cheese curds were actual pieces of cheese. Not to much gravy. It's also downtown which is very convenient, right off the Peel St metro line. All in all, a good experience.
Went à second day just to try the classique sandwich. Tried the poutine yesterday and thought it was good but not the best. came back today and can say the sandwich combo was very good. Highly recommend it. also tried the fraise cake and it was very rich and good. Plenty of meat in the sandwich. I also loved the fries. Got a cherise noir which was very good. Wish they sold it in stores. I would definitely give the Montreal smoked meat sandwich à 5 out of 5. Service was friendly. They did forget our utensils but not a biggie as we appreciated the friendliness.
Super casual setting and open late night! I see couples, families, singles after work stopping here to fill their tummies late at night. Poutine is oh so delicious! Tasty gravy, mound of chopped smoked meat, big chunks of cheese curds over fries. You can't ask for any better poutine than this! Ruben sandwich came with thick cut juicy smoked meat. Just delish.
Killing some time in the city and was hungry do someone in our party found this place close by. I like this place a lot. From the unique table designs to the imagery on the walls, reminded me of Friendly's back home. I ordered a french onion soup which was probably not the best move as we were trying to have a quick lunch, oops. I shared it and we used the excess broth for dunking our sandwich's in. Very tasty soup. Came out hot but cooled quick. Club sandwich was enjoyable. Would have been better probably on the bagel as the sandwich bread didn't quite hold well together with all the fixings in it. Overall a place I would recommend. Bathroom is not accessible as kt is down a large flight of stairs so be cautious with that.
Smoked meat is another word for pastrami - but with a twist. That difference in flavor differentiates it from it's more famous cousin. But this place is amazing. The flavor of the meat was terrific. Honestly, we couldn't get enough. Even though our time in Montreal was limited we came back to this place twice. So good. FOOD: Like I said, delicious. You have to get the smoked meat even though they have plenty of other things. Of course you can get the classic poutine also - a Canadian classic. But you're here for the smoked meat. For sure. SERVICE: Good! Can't complain. People were very nice with us tourists and the portion sizes are huge. We had enough to take back with us each time. COST: Very good for the quality AND quantity. Totally worthwhile.
Came for dinner. No reservations but was seated right away. The seating is narrow and kinda awkward with our coats at a non-booth table. Also the tables along the center of the restaurant are adjacent to another table, you can turn your head and see you neighbor maybe 6 in away from your face. Our server was good. We ordered and got our food quickly. We ordered a French onion soup, poutine and a montreal smoked meat club. The soup was pretty good, had a nice cheese top. The poutine was a nice portion to share. And the club had a good amount of meat in it. Apparently they say they're known for their cheesecake, we tried a slice. The cheesecake was rich and decadent and it was topped with the a strawberry sauce. This cheesecake didn't have a crust. Definitely good to share. Price point is good for this establishment. Seems like a family friendly sports bar.
We came here for a late night dinner around 10. Thank God they were open or we would be starving. Even though it was late it was still full and it kept filling up with late diners and young people. I ordered fried rice, it was good I ate half of it it was a big serving for me and hubby ordered the sandwich and he liked it. The egg rolls were amazing as well. Our waiter was very attentive and our food came in a reasonable time. It's a casual place, plenty of tables and bathrooms are located downstairs.
Stopped by Dunn's Ville-Marie during a day trip to Montreal for dinner before our bus ride home. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxing, and the service was friendly and welcoming. We tried the smoked meat poutine, French onion soup, a drink, and strawberry cheesecake. The poutine paired really well with the soup, although the cheesecake was a bit too sweet for my liking. Overall, a great spot to chill and unwind!
This historical establishment didn't disappoint. I got the French onion soup which was tasty n garlicky. Then I ordered a Cobb salad with smoked meat instead of chicken. Great way to taste the meat without the extras. I was pleased. Locals love this spot n tourists enjoy it too.
We walked to Dunn's from our hotel, looking for a late night dinner of Poutine, and heard they had good smoked meat poutine. Although we read that service wasn't great, we decided to give it a try. The place was busy, but not packed. We were seated right away by an unfriendly host, which tracked with reviews. Our waiter came by and quickly took our drink order, and then we chose to order the smoked meat poutine. Drinks were delivered to our table, and we enjoyed those waiting for our poutine. There were a few games on the TV's around the bar, and the place had a fun atmosphere. Our poutine was delivered and Wow. There is a ton of tiny shredded pieces of the smoked meat atop our poutine with gravy and cheese curds sitting over the fries. The food was really good, we enjoyed the poutine. Our server never came back to check on us, we had to ask for the check, and there was no interaction with the staff even over the check. It really is too bad as we found the poutine to be very flavorful, the meat was melt in your mouth tender and had a very nice smoky flavor to it. We knew the service was going to be a hit or miss, just wanted to try the food. If you can overlook the lack of friendly service, the food was good.
I've really tried to give this place chance after chance, but it just keeps disappointing. This time I ordered the Club Roll, and honestly, it was nothing like the photos they show online or on Uber Eats. Instead of a stacked smoked meat sandwich, what I got looked more like ham, salami, or even bologna definitely not smoked meat. The portion was small and felt misleading compared to their promo pictures. A couple of months ago, I also tried their Louisiana potato soup with bacon, and it came watery with almost raw bacon thrown not slow cooked, not even crispy, just undercooked. Totally unappetizing. Their smoked meat sandwiches aren't much better. When they do give smoked meat, the slices are cut so thick that they fall right out of the bread and make it impossible to enjoy. The only positives: they're generous with the fries (if you're lucky enough to get them fresh and crispy), and the pickle and coleslaw are usually solid. But for a place that's supposed to be known for smoked meat, it's really disappointing that they can't seem to get the basics right. It sucks, because this is an iconic name in Montreal. but based on repeated experiences, I just can't recommend it anymore. I will forsure keep trying and hoping
After a drama filled outbound flight to YUL and expecting to have dinner with friends who also faced weather delays, glad Dunn's was open late for a quick dinner. Within a quick 15 minute walk, popped in and placed an order for a smoke meat sandwich along with some poutine. Took the food to go as my friend's were arriving soon. The portions are fairly large and ended up sharing the sandwich and poutine with another friend. Smoked meat sandwich was good and am glad I asked for more mustard. The fries remained fairly crispy and did enjoy the pickle and coleslaw. Poutine was decent as it did travel fairly well. Loved how they did not skimp on the cheese curds. Didn't have an opportunity to try Schwartz's to compare but the sandwich and poutine did hit the spot after only eating bfast that day. read more

As others have said 10/10. Loved everything about our visit. We both had the half sandwich. I had potato latkes and my friend had fries. Second visit I had the same but with fries. My friend had the hot dog. She loved it. read more
Very very solid smoked brisket that is flavorful yet melt-in-your-mouth tender. The smoked meat is the must-try item - in poutine, sandwich or platter form. We had the reuben which was delish - even the coleslaw was fantastic and I am not a coleslaw fan (it was light and refreshing). I recommend subbing in sweet potato fries for the standard version. Our cobb salad was also solid - the chicken was perfectly grilled with a nice charr and still very moist, juicy, and flavorful. Everything we had was great and our server was efficient, frinedly, and helpful. If you are downtown by Victoria Square, definitely stop by! read more

Came here one late night out on the town. Ordered the buffalo chicken poutine. Pretty good. They had Ranch (was shocked), and that made it even better. Very big and filling. Got the le petit smoked meat combo along with extra pickles. The pickles were the big winner for me. The smoked meat was decent portion for a petit size. The fries were a great portion as well. Wasn't a fan of the coleslaw but I hardly ever am so am not judging. Staff was very friendly and attentive. And this was all after midnight. Impressive. Would recommend read more
This review is solely for the Dunn's famous poutine with smoked meat. Absolutely, hands down, one of the best poutines in Montreal. Generous cheese curds, excellent peppercorn gravy, and the finely chopped smoked meat - you get a bit of everything in each bite. The staff are also friendly and very quick! read more
The service here is what you would expect for a sports bar... and the seating is a bit tight but you're here for the food! Huge menu with some vegetarian options in each section. You can get a couple of the apps like fries, veggie burger wrap, veggie burger, veggie pizza and Californian pasta. The veggie burger was tasty, came with delicious cole slaw and pickles. We also ordered the pasta which came well well roasted veggies and garlic bread. We also HAD to try to poutine which yeah I know the gravy isn't vegetarian but shhhhh My husband has never had smoked meat but tried it and said it reminded him of corn beef but a little drier. He ate it all pretty quickly so it must have been somewhat enjoyable? The place was packed with locals when we arrived so it must be a local fave spot? I'm glad we tried it. read more

We did takeout - planning to have brunch on site next time and order one of their bloody Mary's. The smoked meat was not my fave but the Cole slaw and pickle were excellent. (My spouse is not much of a meat eater but loved it - go figure). 4 stars for groovy ambience, super fast take out once I figured out who to order from, and the nicest waitstaff anywhere! read more

Dunn's Is a CLASSIC restaurant/diner that serves the most amazing "smoked meat" and cheesecake! It's a MUST visit for anyone visiting the Montreal area. There's currently road construction in the area, but don't let that keep you away. read more

When you walk in you get a very traditional diner feel. We got seated pretty quickly and got the food pretty quickly as well. We got the Dunn's Famous Poutine, potato skins, and the smoked meat sandwich with fries. The potato skins and smoked meat sandwich were my favorites. They were good but I wouldn't say they were extraordinary. We ordered a very potato heavy meal so select carefully when you choose your dishes. The best part were probably the fries that came with the smoked meat sandwich. I would say my experience here was pretty decent. read more
Needed to obviously indulge in Poutine while in Montreal and Dunn's was an easy option close to the hotel that was open for 24 hours. The service was a tad stiff, but being that the place is open 24/7, I don't blame if the guy was tired. Had the french onion soup and the Montreal smoked meat poutine. Loved the french onion - it was delicious with the melted cheese and bread and a tasty broth. The poutine was great too. Crispy fries, delicious gravy and tasty smoked meat. All in all - a solid option for poutine in Montreal. It's just fries with gravy, after all. read more

When in Montreal, you have to try their smoked meat. Dunn's is an old brand and the good thing about them is you can choose lean meat without extra charge. Takeout order took some time to be ready. The Smoked Meat Plate comes with 1/2 pound smoked meat, rye bread, fries, coleslaw and pickle. We upgraded the fries to Dunn's Poutine because why not! Personally I'm not a huge fan of smoked meat (too much salt), but this would be pretty good to share with others! read more

Summary: If you're a tourist and looking to try poutine and smoked meat of Montreal, Dunn's is a great place to start! Prices are a little high as it is pretty touristy but food is yummy! Would recommend to give it a try if you're visiting Montreal for the first time like me. My husband and I both ordered the Small smoked meat combo (6 oz smoked meat sandwich, side of fries, coleslaw, and a half pickle) for $16.50 CAD. We both replaced the fries for poutine for an extra $4 CAD. Their smoked meat is well seasoned, but not as good as its competitors. The side order of poutine was pretty big and it was pretty good, although this was my first time trying poutine so I don't have much to compare it to. Like I mentioned in my summary, I would recommend Dunn's to tourists coming through Montreal and wanting to try the infamous smoked meat sandwich and poutine for the first time, but there may be better places for both. The wait staff was great and attentive. We visited on a Friday night around 5pm, beating the dinner rush. read more
Thank you fellow YELPERS for introducing us to Dunn's Famous! We arrived in Montreal after quite a delayed flight and were ravenously hungry lol and the fact that DF was open 24/7 made our decision so much easier. We walked over from our Hotel and were seated immediately and being that late it wasn't too crowded. Our server was warm and welcoming and made us feel comfortable from the get go. I came for their famous Poutine but on seeing the Chicken and Gravy Platter with the fries I was made in the shade lol The Wifey had the Pastrami Sandwich which she devoured and Dust had the Montreal smoked meat sandwich and Kev had the Dunn's Poutine and they loved their meals! I just wish we had more time in Montreal to come back here but we most definitely will when we're visiting again! read more

4.5. Second time coming on the way from/to nyc and overall just a very good experience. Can you compare the smoked meat to let's say Katz's in nyc? No, but the smoked meat sandwich is still very good. I like there are also a ton of options on the menu not just smoked meat. Service has always been great and you can tell everyone in there works really hard. Love that I always get a table without any wait. Our go to place for smoked meats when I want to relax at a table and not have to wait long or have to take away and eat in my car. read more

Dunn's initially wasn't in my plans. I have a list of restaurants that I want to try but most of the Montreal restaurants were outside of downtown, and I was needing something close to the Bell Centre. I was also craving poutine and after doing a quick search, Dunn's looked promising. It was really packed and I was fortunate to find a seat at the bar. I already knew what I came for but I quickly scanned the menu, just in case I saw something else that was appealing. I ordered their Dunn's Famous poutine. Being in Montreal, why wouldn't you get poutine with smoked meat? You'd be crazy not to honestly. Poutine is already good as it is. And Dunn's version is no exception. The fries were very tasty and perfectly cooked. Not too soggy or too crispy. Topped with a very delicious gravy and tasty cheese curds. But this version topped with smoked meat just went over the top. It was a huge portion you could probably get away with sharing it. But I was by myself so luckily for me I didn't have to share, but had the challenge of finishing it. If I'm ever back in town, I wouldn't hesitate returning. Their service was great. Checked this place while I was in the area and I love smoked meat but I much prefer Reubens. Came here in the afternoon, most of the restaurant was empty. Ordered the mini smoked meat sandwich with fries and requested no mustard on the sandwich. But guess what? Yes that's correct, the sandwich arrived with mustard. It wasn't even busy but somehow the chef still made an error. I couldn't even locate a server so I just ate it to correct the mistake and left disappointed. Oh and the smoked meat tasted more on the dry side as well so it wasn't that appealing. Left such a bad impression here. I wouldn't recommend especially with so many options for smoked meat in Montreal. Even if the restaurant is not busy, I think the servers still should be attentive to the customers that do decide to dine here. Sorry but I would not return. read more

Dunn's Famous is one of the few places in town that are open 24/7. I've never been! They're located next door to Dominion Square Tavern and have two other locations in town. We dropped in on a Monday (around 2:30am) and it was surprisingly busy. Our waitress was friendly and helpful for our massive group of 12. The menu is huge but I only had eyes on their smoked meat options. It's a given that you should try their speciality. - Le petit combo ($14.50) - small sandwich served on rye bread with fresh cut fries, coleslaw and dill. Small is an understatement; this is a filling meal. The sandwich was hefty with generous slices of smoked meat. Tender, fatty goodness; perfect after a late night out. The coleslaw was refreshing but the dill pickle was bad. The fries were okay but needed more time in the deep fryer. - Smoked meat fried rice ($14.00) - a fusion dish. There was smoked meat, bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli and onions topped with diced tomatoes and shallots. Turns smoked meat was diced too finely but the tomatoes were refreshing to the palate. Decent. Solid late night downtown spot to grab food. Stick with the smoked meat sandwiches. 3.5 stars. read more
So. Much. Food!! I can't go to Montreal and NOT have smoked meat and poutine! We were here for the Grand Prix last weekend and had to stop in to Dunn's once again for our fill of deliciousness. We were seated immediately and the service was quick and efficient. I ordered the large smoked meat sandwich and upgraded to poutine. My husband got the Ruben and also upgraded to the poutine. Everything was so delicious and we received way more than we expected. This restaurant was recommended to me last year by a friend and it was so good we came back. It will definitely be a Grand Prix weekend staple! Love it. read more
I'm glad there's a restaurant that a family with kids can eat at that closes late in the heart of downtown Montreal. Although a little pricey like all other restaurants in downtown, they compensate their price with huge servings which can be shared with 2 people. They are part of a chain, where you can find other dunns restaurants in other areas. Salad - 3 1/2 stars - basic, but a whole big bowl full to be eaten as a meal or shared as a side salad. Smoked meat poutine - 3 1/2 stars - super huge serving of poutine, but was a bit too salty. Margarita - 4 stars - they make it sweet in Canada with a strong coconut flavor. Service - 4 stars - although only one waitress, food came decent time. Easy to find because we could see their huge vertical red lit sign from a block away, but because it's in the heart of Montreal, only street or paid parking lot around the area. Since we were staying at a hotel a block away, I'm glad they were open since most of the eating places in the area that open late were only bars. read more
