    Petite original poutine
    Alex C.

Chez Claudette is famous for their poutines and they have a very large variety of poutines/toppings. I tried the original or classic poutine. I'm not sure if this is just Montreal style poutine, but the fries here are not crispy at all. As you can see from the pictures, the fries are very dark brown in color and they also have a fryer-oil taste to them. The gravy is a rich dark gravy which I found quite good and not overly salty and the cheese curds were nice and fresh. However, my personal preference is to have crispy fries fried in clean oil, and this is not it. The poutine comes in 3 sizes. I ordered the petite or middle size one, which was a good amount of food for two people. The interior has a very old school feel. There's seating for maybe about 15 - 25 people. When I went, there was only 1 server and 1 chef. Service was quick and friendly and the food came out quite fast.

This is one of the Quebec institutions for putine. Ambiance of a greasy college diner. Friendly staff. Multiple topping options. It's a heavy meal. No surprise. I am no expert but I would prefer crispy fries. Hard to accomplish with a gravy over them. I opted for the Elvis with some peppers as I wanted some vegetables. I wish it had strips of beef rather than ground. Stick with normal size as portions are huge. NO regrets. It's a dish I had to try as an introduction to Montreal but it will probably be my last.

Lovely server and the food is really good for the price point. Ordered the bacon cheeseburger with baby poutine and a glass of house white wine. Pros: - friendly service - food came out super quickly - delicious food - extremely affordable

Chez Claudette wins best cheese curds in our battle of Quebec poutines but outside of our squeaky buddies, the experience was just okay in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with service. We walked in at mid afternoon and ordered a classic poutine to-go since parking is nothing short of a nightmare in the area. The fries were stacked high and the gravy was poured in piping hot before being closed up. But on first bite after opening, what I didn't expect was notes of sweet? Tasted the gravy, nope. Definitely not the curds. The fries? Yep. Why were they a little sweet? Odd. I just couldn't really get behind it. I guess it's to balance the savory gravy, but unfortunately, it really stuck out to me and not in the best of ways. They also wilted quickly leading to somewhat mushy fries. But let's talk about the star: the curds. When people talk about squeak, these guys actually made noise! Nice! If I had another chance, maybe the move would be to order a poutine with even more savory ingredients laid on top.

Chez Claudette is a poutine staple in Montreal. We got lucky with prime seating and the food was made fresh and quickly. While it was a very filling meal, I found it to be a bit bland. Maybe I'm just not a poutine person.

I came on my first day in Montreal. It was also my first time trying poutine. I got the Celine. For me, it felt too overwhelming and turned me off. I thought it was too salty. I did enjoy the onion rings. Service was efficient. It was definitely a hole in the wall spot.

3.5 stars for the poutine but 5 stars for the service!! We sat at the bar on a bustling weekend afternoon and while overwhelmed with the poutine options we all settled on a giaaaaannnnttt platter each and left full. I think this was a special poutine experience if your visiting though I couldn't eat on the regular just due to the sheer volume and heaviness lolol. The vegetarian poutine was the best vegetarian version I've found! We also had absolute pleasure to meet Adel, the chef lighting up our plates and hearts!! He was kind enough to whip us up a crepe too, which was a nice sweet treat and different from crepes I've enjoyed before. It was a lovely experience at Chez Claudette!!

Maurice Pritchard protects some of the finest poutine north of the border. Super delicious, with massive flavor, excellent coverage of gravy, great potato layer, and the cheese curd squeak just cuts through like a humid day in Louisiana. There was very little not to like about the food here. It really is delicious, served quickly and with a friendly cashier to make it all better. The prices are pretty reasonable as well. A high recommend from me, as it checks all the boxes in terms of a well balanced poutine without ruining your insides.

Was told this place was one of the best. Friendly casual service. The steamies stole the show (vapeur). Get them with everything (coleslaw, mustard, etc). They were the best cheap eat of my trip hitting a dozen famous places in the city. The poutine selection is vast, the portions for a "petite" could feed two. Honestly I think I liked the gravy on the original at La Banquise, the poutine Quebecois was good -- the additional ingredients were quality and didn't feel cheaply added. Interior is a little cramped with fake brick wallpaper but bright. If you come here, get Steamies. I was lucky to just be able to walk in and get a table on a Saturday at noon.

This place wasn't anything special. We ended up getting some poutine and it wasn't anything spectacular. If you're looking for a good poutine place, this isn't it. But if you want to grab a quick bite then sure. Service was alright.

Awesome diner vibe. I opted for the classic poutine and really loved it but the star of the meal was the steamies. That was my first time trying them and they were great! Definitely a good place to try for authentic Quebec food.

I've got to say, we absolutely loved the gravy and the cheese curds in this poutine. We ordered the Elvis and the Smoked meat poutine for a party of two and almost finished everything despite the relatively large portion sizes. We preferred the Elvis as we found the smoked meat to be a little salty. The Elvis also comes with veggies which add more flavor and help cut through the heavy meal. This place can get pretty busy with take out orders so if you're sitting in, you'll have to be patient about service. Nonetheless, the service is very friendly and happily chatted with us and regulars that came by. You pay for your meal at the counter when you're done with your meal.

Food Not to compare poutineries, butttt... Chez Claudette has La Banquise beat. My friend and I ordered a classic poutine and the curds were noticeably funkier (definitely a plus for my inner-cheese-lover) which was complemented by a sweeter potato. On the other hand, I didn't love that the fries were all soggy once they got to the table nor that the curds produced more of a pull than a satisfying squeak, but this is all _easily_ overlooked by the gravy. The star of the show, the denser, and all around mote flavorful gravy was the perfect blanket to swaddle each fry. I'd come back to this place in a heartbeat. Value We paid 8 CAD for a small poutine split between 2 people that I'd consider a heavy snack or lighter lunch. Experience We came in on an early Saturday afternoon and everything about our experience was fast: we were seated immediately, turnaround time from placing our order to receiving our food was unbelievably quick, but even the interactions with our waiter were rushed, almost edging on curt.

I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. All the staff was so welcoming, and surprisingly chipper this early in the morning. SHOUTOUT TO LA BANQUISE! THANK YOU FOR FUELING THE JOURNEY! IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

I took my niece from New York City here because La Banquise is supposed to be the "must try" poutine spot in Montreal. We had a great night overall: soccer game, drinks at Mellon Brasserie (none of us were drunk; my wife was 100% sober). Everything was fun and chill. But La Banquise completely ruined the end of that trip, and I'm not okay with letting this go. We paid for the food and service. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: at the end of the day, we were customers, and we deserved to be treated with respect. We waited for our Uber outside. It was cold, and I'm on crutches, so my injuries hurt badly in the cold. After waiting outside for a long time with the Uber not showing up, we went back inside to wait near the door, in the corner, not blocking anyone. The staff at the door immediately came in and started rudely and aggressively kicking us out. He refused to speak English with me after I clearly said, "I don't speak French, so talk to me in English." He kept talking French and was rude to my wife, my niece, and me. He told the waitress in French that we were "blocking the way," which was 100% false. (My wife speaks French) We were just standing near the entrance, waiting for a few minutes, trying to get out of the cold. When I went to the cashier and explained, "This guy is kicking me out. I just paid for my meal. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: you're still a customer, and you shouldn't be kicked out and treated like trash just because you're waiting for your Uber on crutches. I'm on crutches, it's cold, and my Uber isn't here yet," they called a waitress who also started telling us to leave instead of helping. She didn't try to find a solution; she just said, "No, no, leave, leave." This is not just bad service. This is disgusting, disrespectful treatment of a paying customer with a mobility issue. My niece, who had a blast all night, ended the trip saying, "What the f....? You bring me here and they treat us like this?" She now has a bad impression of Montreal because of this place. My niece is from New York City, and she's also posting her own review. That review will be seen by people in New York and by tourists looking for recommendations. If you treat tourists like this, you're not just ruining one night, you're ruining the image of the whole city. Montreal is supposed to be a welcoming city for tourists and people looking to have fun and be treated with respect. La Banquise failed that completely. The food was okay, but the experience was terrible because of how we were treated. This is unacceptable. You should be ashamed of how you handled this.
