"Dunn's Famous Smoked Meat Sandwiches" are famous not just because of the sandwiches but because they were the first to defeat the French language sign laws that attempted to replace all English language signs with French. The harm it would have done to change the name to boeuf Marine which is a term no one including the Franco-phones used would have been absurd. I ordered the classic smoked meat sandwich. Omg the Montreal smoked meat is as good as it gets here. The meat was moist and not overly salty, and I got the medium fat and it was perfect. Imagine if the corned beef and the pastrami had the perfect baby. It was that good. Service was good, and our drinks were refilled without asking. From what I can see, Dunn's is a localized version of a TGIFriday's which is perfectly fine. They have several locations around Montreal and their claim to fame is smoked meats. Think New York style pastrami. Of course like a TGIFriday's, they have a ton of other menu items. This location also happens to be 24/7 - another plus. I don't especially enjoy breakfast foods, so a full menu restaurant at 8am is perfect for me. I was planning on getting Schwartz later for smoked meat (think Katz Deli) so I opted for an Uber driver recommendation of hot chicken. This isn't the Nashville version so don't confuse the two. It's essentially a shredded chicken sandwich drenched in Salisbury steak gravy and topped with peas. Be warned, not everyone will enjoy this sandwich. I personally did. Smoked meat poutine = the only way to kick off a trip to Montreal. Luckily our hotel was around the corner from Dunn's and we were able to make this happen as soon as we arrived. Dunn's is a casual spot - basically like a hybrid diner / deli. The menu had a variety of different types of sandwiches, poutine and grill food. Because Montreal is known for poutine and smoked meat we opted for a big bowl of poutine topped with smoked meat. This wasn't the best pastrami that I've ever had, but was still delicious and tasted great mixed with the poutine. I also ordered a crock of french onion soup which was topped with tons of cheese and had great flavor. Nothing better when the high is below zero degrees! We washed everything down with some cold Molson (okay, if you can't tell we were excited to be in Canada) and were in and out in under an hour. Poutine!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, so this wasn't the BEST I ever had but I still really enjoyed the poutine they served here. Let's put it this way, I liked it enough that I went two days in a row. That's also because I really liked their smoked meat sandwich platter ... which was just awesome. The meat was good and I actually enjoyed this more than Schwartz's. Yeah yeah call me crazy but I felt the meat here was more tender and juicy. As someone who's lived off Jewish delis pretty much most of my life in NYC, I guess there was just something about Dunn's smoked meat that seemed to fit my palate better. The service here was decent. It got kind of busy both nights I was here but the servers were all still attentive and checked on us to make sure things were okay. I was too pleased with my meal on both nights honestly to notice anything else ... so you get the idea. That's not to say you shouldn't visit Schwartz's. Ok, don't sleep on this place here me out. When you walk in, this place feels like a chain (I know there are 3 locations but I'm talking like a major chain) but some of the food here is pretty darn good, especially for being open 24 hours. For instance, get a bowl of smoked meat poutine and what you get is a red bowl that is the biggest frickin portion of poutine you ever saw. Their smoked meat Rueben? Pretty great. The full dressed hotdog? I'd get it again. The French Onion soup was even decent. Some of the appetizers are meh, but overall this place is somewhere you should check out of your visiting. Great late night spot to go to! Hubby & I came here at 10pm. Luckily it was walking distance from our hotel (Hotel Bonevature), took us less than 10 minutes to get here. There aren't very many poutine options near Old Montreal, except for maybe Montreal Pool Room. After drinks at Nhau bar, we were really craving late night eats, so we made our way to Dunn's for some smoked meat poutine. When you walk in, it's very diner-like and their menu looks like something out of Applebee's or TGIF. We really wanted La Banquiste or Poutineville, but it was way too far from our airbnb and Dunn's is famous for their smoked meat, so why not kill two birds? We got the smoked meat poutine and it came out SO FAST. The fries were fresh and crispy.. for about 1 minute. It's served in a big bowl topped with gravy and smoked meat. I think the fries would preserve more crispiness if it was served in a plate, more spread out. But who knows, I'm no poutine expert. Maybe it's supposed to be served like this. By the 5 minute mark, it was all just very soggy and not that enjoyable. But it was a huge amount of food! and the meat was not bad. Stopped by on a recent trip to Montreal when I was craving a meal of smoked Montreal meat with a black cherry Coke. I ordered a small combo and upgraded my fries for poutine which cost an additional $4. The small combo is a sandwich with white bread and smoked meat, with side of coleslaw, pickle. Both the smoked meat and poutine were served steaming hot. I could only finish maybe a third of the poutine but managed to finish everything else! I was given 2 choices for the black cherry Coke, either can of Cott or on tap. The food is standard as Dunn's has now become a chain at multiple locations including Toronto. Great place for delicious food! I visited for 1 night from Toronto and chose the hotel down the street in order to visit this place.
